WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT taking it all into account Madison Hicks’ choice to attend Linfield had as much to do with the university’s intimate setting and lacrosse team chemistry as it did course descriptions and stately buildings by avi mehta

hen considering which college to attend, Madison Hicks did not want to be “just a number.” She wanted to be person. Arriving to Linfield as a volleyball player, Hicks fell in love with the camaraderie of the women’s lacrosse team during open tryouts. “When I was looking at colleges, I had someone ask me, ‘Do you want to be a number or a person?’ I wanted to be a person. At Linfield everyone knows you and the professors know you. It’s nice to be known by your name,” says Hicks, explaining the reason she chose Linfield. “At first, Linfield seems small, but once you’re here, it doesn’t feel that small.” After playing on the volleyball team her freshman season, she heard that the lacrosse team was holding open tryouts. Hicks’ older sister, Courtney, played lacrosse at Linfield so the sport was definitely something she wanted to try. “With volleyball, it’s just the 6-7 people (on the court), whereas in lacrosse, you interact with everyone. I love the girls on the team and they made me feel welcome, so I decided to stick with it,” says Hicks. “Having coach Lindsay Kibler come in as the new coach definitely made me want to play lacrosse.” “Madison has the eager mentality of an athlete to always want to get better. It’s been fun to watch her overcome obstacles, improve and grow as a player and person,” says coach Lindsay Kibler. “She sets a great example as a teammate because no matter how tired she is, she doesn’t stop. She also brings so much fun positive energy to the team We are going to miss her smile and lightheartedness.” Hicks played soccer and volleyball growing up. During high school, she played club volleyball during the spring, so did not have much time to explore other sports. 4

“Now, I kind of wish that I had played lacrosse. Courtney had a lot of fun playing it in high school,” says Hicks, who had friends in high school asking her to try lacrosse, but turned them down due to the time commitment of volleyball. Growing in Tigard, Oregon, a number of Hicks’ teachers were Linfield alums. So, too, is her uncle and aunt, Bob and Sabrina Prill. Both were student-athletes at Linfield. Sabrina was a track and field student-athlete; Bob was a swimmer. Having three family members enjoy quality experiences as Linfield student-athletes and an accounting program that was unmatched among her other colleges, Hicks knew Linfield was the right place for her. “There were a lot of people who had gone through Linfield and I heard good things from them, so Linfield is where I wanted to be,” says Hicks, on who influenced her to pick Linfield. Hicks is known to be superstitious on match days. She likes to wear the same socks and has shoes that are dedicated to be worn only on match day. She also eats the same breakfast, even if that means waking up early to prepare it. An accounting major, Hicks will soon be undertaking an internship with Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt, P.C. in Lake Oswego after graduation. She hopes the opportunity leads to a staff position with the firm. “Eventually, I want to be a partner in a firm, starting with the first step of my accounting career right after graduation,” says Hicks, who is eight credits shy of being eligible to take her CPA exam, which she hopes to prepare for after college. At Linfield, Hicks has worked with the accounts payable department for 2½ years and also was an intern in the Office of Finance and Administration this past summer. “I saw how an accounting department works in an office setting in the real world,” she says. “It was nice to see that I actually liked the environment and that I had the chance to experience it.” Being a student-athlete, Hicks does not have much free time during the season, but when she does, she likes to Facetime her parents so that she can see her dog. She enjoys going on solitary runs around McMinnville or long drives to the beach when she has the time. “During the offseason, most of my free time is just relaxing, watching movies and not really doing anything,” adds Hicks.

RECENT ACCOLADES NORTHWEST CONFERENCE honors BETHANY SHADE for SECOND TIME Linfield junior Bethany Shade, the Northwest Conference leader in caused turnovers and draw controls, was named the NWC Defensive StudentAthlete of the Week for the second straight week. “Bethany continues to raise the bar for herself and her teammates,” said Linfield coach Lindsay Kibler. “I’m asking her and the team to do the impossible this year by playing all 60 minutes and she continues to show us that it is possible.” Shade made an impact at both ends of the field during Linfield’s sweep of Pacific. Defensively, she caused six turnovers and picked up six ground balls while producing seven goals on the offensive side. She is tied for fourth in the conference with 18 goals and seven assists. She is the conference leader in caused turnovers (19) and draw controls (63). For the second straight week and for the third time in her career, Shade was singled out for recognition by the conference. Maia Rezoski was also named to the conference’s weekly honor roll last week.
