With speed to chase down balls and a strong arm, Baily Paul’s transition from middle infielder to a starting spot in right field has been seamless by avi mehta

aily Paul had never played in the outfield before this season. The junior from Gig Harbor, Washington, had been an infielder from the age of 6, when she started playing tee-ball. But Linfield University softball coach Jackson Vaughan felt Paul could make a greater impact on the team in outfield this year. “In the fall, I played shortstop, second base and a little bit of outfield, since we graduated our shortstop and lost both of our right fielders,” says Paul. “It was definitely a weird change going from playing infield my whole life to the outfield. I was meant to be there.” Paul is batting .308 on the season and has produced 26 RBIs, second-most on the team and ninth among NWC hitters. This spring, Paul has enjoyed being coached by one of Linfield’s all-time great outfielders, Cheyenne Fletcher. “I love chasing down balls,” she says. “I love being coached by Cheyenne. Outfield is where I was meant to be. It’s really fun.” Fletcher has been impressed with Paul’s ability to adjust to her new position quickly. “Baily made the transition to outfield look easy. It was like she was meant to be out there the whole time. She has great range, a great arm, and has been a joy to coach,” says Fletcher. “She pushes her teammates to be better every day with how hard she works and always has a great attitude.” The 2021 season has been unusual with no out-of-region trips nor fans in the stands. With the easing of restrictions by the Northwest Conference that included a long bus trip to Spokane, Washington, to face the Whitworth Pirates, Paul has begun to feel some normalcy. “This season has been very unpredictable,” she says. “It’s awesome to have fans back, just creating a little more energy and excitement. The coaching staff has done a great job making it feel as normal as possible.” Linfield has been ranked as high as No. 1 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll. Paul has been impressed with team’s results this far and how younger players have stepped up. “It has been a big growing year for us. I don’t think there’s a person on the team that has not been contributing to our success. It’s been awesome. I love where our team is right now and the chemistry we have built.” 4

Growing up in Gig Harbor, outside of Tacoma, Paul played soccer and softball at Peninsula High School. She considered playing both sports at Linfield, before receiving an offer to play softball at the Division I level at Seattle University. Paul attended Seattle U. during her freshman year, but made the decision to transfer after the season. “I always dreamt of playing Division I and gave it a try my freshman year. I didn’t like the big city vibes. It feels like more of a community here,” she says. She chose Linfield because of the community as well as the guidance she received from professors as well as Vaughan and the softball program. “Stepping on campus, you feel like home. I am from a small town, which is growing. Linfield was one of the schools that was far away from home, but not too far,” says Paul. After coming to Linfield, Paul changed her major three times before deciding to focus on sport management. She has a passion for working with youth sports and hopes to turn that into a career. “Dr. Natalie Welch, who is my advisor and professor, introduced me to a whole new world of career possibilities. I am super passionate about youth sports and getting kids moving again. Right now, they are just not moving as much as they used to, especially with COVID,” says Paul. Her ultimate goal is to work for Nike’s Social and Community Impact initiative, which focuses on youth sports and getting kids active again. She is hoping to work for a non-profit agency to start her career. Paul is currently one of the outdoor recreation leaders on campus, leading hiking and recreation trips. She also works for the HHPA department and is working for PenMet Parks in Gig Harbor this summer. “I am going to be organizing the adult softball league and running some youth camps for them,” says Paul. Her favorite activity outside of softball and school is hiking. “I love getting outside and exploring. The coast is not too far away so I’ve definitely been there a few times. My guilty pleasure is shopping, going to Woodburn and Portland.” Gaining an additional year of eligibility due to COVID, Paul is looking forward to playing softball for three more years. She has been going back and forth about the possibility of returning for a fifth year. “With Linfield adding a master’s program in business, I’m definitely giving it some consideration. I am just going to see how my body feels.”

DEL SMITH STADIUM

Del Smith Stadium has steadily evolved into a jewel among college softball facilities in the Pacific Northwest. Named in honor of trustee emeritus and longtime Linfield College athletics supporter Del Smith, the facility slowly took shape over a 15-year period. Many of the early improvements came through the work of players and volunteers using donated materials. In 1990, the softball field became a permanent, softball-only facility. Prior to the 1990 season, the softball field was also used as the Wildcats’ soccer field in the fall. At that time, the field underwent a facelift as the playing surface was moved back 25 feet from the street to allow for portable bleachers, a temporary outfield fence was installed and a single batting cage was erected. In 1995, a substantial upgrade was undertaken which added two covered team dugouts and a home-team dressing room. In addition, a six-foot cyclone fence was permanently installed around the field’s perimeter and the batting cages were outfitted with an Astroturf base.

The move toward permanent seating began in 1997 when an elevated platform was constructed. Stadium lighting was later added in 2001. Recent additions include a warning track and outfield foul poles. Red vinyl slats were inserted into the perimeter fence, adding a finished look as well as a feeling of intimacy to the venue. By 2008, an all-aluminum 400-seat grandstand replaced three sets of portable bleachers, doubling seating capacity. The majority of the funding was provided by a gift from Smith. An enclosed pressbox replaced a makeshift plywood shelter that provided protection from the weather for statisticians and game officials. Mounted on a steel pedestal 25 feet above the ground, the pressbox sits just behind the last row of seating. During the same period of time, an enhanced scoreboard with capability to display each score by inning, replaced the aging model in right field. The facility took another major step

official publication of the linfield wildcats • golinfieldwildcats.com

forward in 2010 with the completion of two covered and partially enclosed batting cages beyond the outfield wall. Most recently, the infield and outfield surfaces were completely revamped in 2011. The top layer of soil was removed, drainage tile was inspected and repaired, and a several layers of gravel and sand were applied to improve the field’s ability to drain during prolonged periods of rain. In addition, auxiliary seating sections were created in the right- and left-field corners to accommodate additional fans during multiteam tournaments. New bullpens were also added next to each team’s respective dugout. More improvements followed in the fall of 2020 and were nearly entirely cosmetic in nature. To enhance the stadium’s aesthetics, the perimeter of the field was completely encircled with mesh branding, graphically honoring Linfield’s graduated All-Americans as well as the Wildcats’ many conference, regional and national championships. New branded padding was added to the backstop and new netting system was installed.
