SEASON OUTLOOK
the climb continues With an experienced defense, a veteran goalkeeper and a variety of options up front, the Linfield Wildcats believe they’ll be among the contenders in the NWC title race by joe stuart ’24

After a strong 7-1 showing in the shortened season of spring 2021, the Linfield women’s soccer team looks to keep rising up the Northwest Conference table in their third season under head coach Steve Simmons, in his second tenure running the program. The Wildcats will be back to a full 20-game schedule for the fall 2021 season, giving a roster with a mix of knowledgeable veterans and talented newcomers their first look at the full slate of NWC opponents since 2019. SPRING SUCCESS The ‘Cats strong win-loss record in the spring was wellearned, outscoring their opponents 16 to four over the eight matches. Between consistent training regimens in the fall of 2020 and successful results in the spring, Linfield had many education-al opportunities. “We’ve had a lot of learning going on the last 18 months. It was huge for us in the spring, and it will be huge for us this fall,” said Simmons. “Last year’s freshmen had a chance to learn and that onboarding process was huge. We really got some confidence from last spring.” Continuing their team-oriented, possession-focused style of play the Wildcats had 10 different goal-scorers across the season, while recording 19 assists as a team. Six of the 11 players to record points for the ‘Cats in the spring return to the roster for the fall of ’21. Linfield’s ability to keep opponents in-check was largely due to limiting opportunities for opponent’s offenses to get comfortable with the ball. Defensive credit is also due to class of ’21 goalkeeper Madi Reimer, who now works with the goalies as an assistant under Simmons. Reimer finished her playing career as Linfield’s all-time leader in shutouts with 20, 5 coming last spring. OPTIONS ON OFFENSE With Linfield’s team-focused style and a bevy of skilled players, the Wildcats do not plan on leaning on one or two specific players on offense. “It’s a collective. Which makes it so hard for an opposing defense to key in on somebody,” said Simmons. Although many different players will have offensive chances this season, Simmons expects returning juniors Laney Green, Izzy Chauls and Callie Kawaguchi to play important roles at the top of Linfield’s formation. Green was Linfield’s leading goal-scorer in the spring, net-ting three to go with two assists; her eight total points were second on the team while boasting a .667 shot-on-goal percentage. 4

22 ashley guldager Chauls and Kawaguchi each scored one goal apiece in their sophomore campaigns, with Chauls recording two assists as well. A vital piece of Linfield’s offense over the last two seasons has come from facilitation out of the midfield, leading to the variety of offensive opportunities. “The midfield will be even more important than in 2019 and last spring,” said Simmons. “We’ve got a lot of good, talented young players who will get opportunities to learn that role.” Key playmaking responsibilities out of the midfield are ex-pected to fall to Chauls and fellow junior Emma Sammartino, as well as sophomores Jill Leroux and Riley Omonaka. Leroux was a key piece of Linfield’s attack as a freshman, recording two goals and two assists while playing in all eight games. Omanaka saw action in every match, starting three, while Sammartino played in seven while starting four. The Wildcats also return seniors Makenna Blix and Laura Hoover on offense. Blix started the first seven matches of the year before sustaining a season-ending injury, recording two goals and an assist. Hoover saw action in all seven matches, starting one. AN EXPERIENCED BACK LINE Much of Linfield’s veteran experience resides on the defensive end of the field, with a line of defensive backs featuring seniors Ashley Guldager, Maddie Serafini and Ariel Miyama. In addition to the seniors, Simmons also sees junior Megan Sweeney and sophomores Raylynn Bucher and Ellie Friedrichsen getting substantial minutes along the back line.
SEASON OUTLOOK “We’ve got a lot of people who got a lot of minutes last spring who can do the job back there,” said Simmons. “We expect them to hit the ground running.” ALL EYES ON BAKKENSEN Continuing the run of experienced players on defense, senior Alyssa Bakkensen will be the Wildcats’ starter in goal, under the tutelage of Reimer. “Alyssa’s in a really, really good place right now,” said Simmons. “That’s always what you want to have with a senior goalkeeper.” Bakkensen has recorded 637 minutes between the posts through her career, playing in 11 matches and starting five. She’s recorded 22 saves and two shutouts while accumulating a 3-3-1 career record. Bakkensen is backed up by junior Erin Isbister, who saw action in two matches back in 2019, starting one. Sophomore Emma Mulligan and freshmen Emilee Miller and Salyna Woods are in the development pipeline as reserves at keeper. CONTINUING PROGRESS With the mix of experienced and young talent the Wildcats expect to compete in the NWC this season, but roles are not set in stone and there may still be growing pains. “It’ll be different this year, we’re stilling integrating new players into how we play,” said Simmons. “Our starting lineup and depth are not crystal clear yet but if I had to pick one today I’d be pretty confident in our group.” “We’ll be super competitive, but we still have a lot of growing to do. We’ll have a great year, no doubt about it, but we’ll also learn a lot.”

HEAD COACH STEVE SIMMONS
encore performance After leading the Linfield men to the NCAA Final Four in 2000, Steve Simmons is eager to lead the women’s squad there, too
S
teve Simmons is in the second year of his second tenure as Linfield women’s soccer coach. He is also in the midst of his third year as Linfield Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Soccer. Simmons brings 15 years of Division I coaching experience at Oregon State and Northern Illinois, in addition to serving five years as head coach of the Linfield men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs from 1996 until 2000. Simmons, who owns a career record of 190-166-31 in 20 seasons as a collegiate head coach, oversees the men’s and women’s soccer clubs, and serves as an advisor to the women’s lacrosse coaching staff. Simmons will also have an influence in the areas of alumni and donor relations, with the goal of re-energizing the soccer and lacrosse alumni and ultimately modernizing and enhancing the Linfield soccer/lacrosse facility’s playing surface, team areas, pressbox and grandstand. During his first tenure at Linfield, he took over a men’s team that went 1-15-0 in 1995 and led the Wildcats to three seasons of double-digit wins, including a 21-1-1 mark in 2000. That team knocked off topranked Ohio Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals losing in the NCAA Division III semifinals to eventual national champion Messiah College. On the women’s side, the Wildcats rose from ninth place to fourth place in his final season as coach. Most recently, Simmons spent nine years as head coach of the Oregon State men’s soccer program. During his OSU tenure, the Beavers produced three MLS SuperDraft first round picks, including No. 1 pick Danny Mwanga in 2010, No. 13 pick Emery Welshman

in 2013 and No. 2 pick Khiry Shelton in 2015. Both Mwanga and Shelton earned Pac-10/Pac-12 Player of the Year honors. Simmons won 63 games with the Beavers in his first seven seasons, including a Pac-10 runner-up finish in 2009. He led OSU to its best season in school history in 2014 on the way to the program’s first NCAA Tournament win, a 1-0 defeat of the University of Denver. In 2015, OSU was nationally ranked, climbing as high as No. 3, a program best. Prior to Oregon State, Simmons compiled a 59-47-3 record in six seasons as head coach at Northern Illinois. The Huskies won 56 matches over his final five seasons, the most-ever in a five-year span in school history, won the Mid-American Conference Championship, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and had 24 players honored with all-MAC accolades. His 2006 campaign at NIU was the best in school history as the team won a school-record 15 games, including a 9-0-0 mark at home. The Huskies earned the school’s first-ever MAC Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Concordia University-Portland, in 1990 before heading to Gonzaga University in 1994 as an assistant coach. A head coaching position followed the next season at Division III Whitworth University. Simmons led Whitworth to a 9-8-2 record in his first season to earn Northwest Conference Coach of the Year honors before moving on to Linfield. As a collegian at Concordia, Simmons netted first-team All-America honors from the National Christian College Athletic Association and NAIA Academic All-America recognition as a senior. He was a two-time NAIA Northwest All-Region selection and was honored with Concordia’s Male Athlete of the Year Award in 1990 and was selected to the school’s Athletics Wall of Fame in 1993. Simmons earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Concordia in 1990. He received a master’s degree in physical education from Gonzaga in 1996. Simmons and his wife, Maria, reside in Corvallis with their three children, Keagan, Jordan and Katey.

Participants, including players, coaches, support staff and media on the sidelines, must wear masks throughout the duration of all athletic events, both indoor and outdoor, and during pregame and postgame activities.

Fans can watch live play-by-play action of all home games on their desktop computer, tablet or mobile device or smart TV. The LSN also provides audio-only coverage of away contests. The Farnham Electric Pregame Show starts 15 minutes prior to each game’s scheduled kickoff. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up, with analysis, final statistics and live interviews with players and coaches. McMinnville native Joe Stuart begins his first season as lead play-by-play announcer. A 2020 Linfield graduate, Stuart is the athletic department’s broadcast coordinator, managing all aspects of Linfield’s webcasting outreach, while assisting with sports communications and social
media needs. Stuart got his start in sports broadcasting with LSN, calling play-byplace for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball contests. He also served as football sideline reporter for two seasons. Retired Linfield Dean of Students and emeritus faculty member Dave Hansen celebrates his 45th season of involvement with Linfield football broadcasts, either as a play-by-play voice and color analyst. For the first time, all Linfield Sports Network broadcasts are available on the Roku app, making it possible for fans to watch live and archived games on their home televisions. LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”
And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Former Linfield football player Brent Barry is named the Oregon School Superintendent of the Year by nick morgan, medford mail tribune Owing to his school district’s outreach after the Almeda fire and a rapid deployment of online resources for affected students and staff after the fire, former Linfield University football quarterback Brent Barry was recently named Oregon School Superintendent of the Year. The Oregon Association of School Executives surprised Barry with the honor last week during a Zoom meeting with other school district leaders across the state. Barry is superintendent of the Phoenix-Talent School District in southern Oregon. The honor puts the 1996 Linfield graduate in the running for the national superintendent of the year award issued by the American Association of School Administrators, according to a news release issued by the OASE and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators. The two organizations picked Barry for the honor because of the “exceptional” way the district navigated numerous challenges for its 2,375 students following the fire that demolished large parts of Phoenix and Talent and took out roughly a third of student and staff homes, according to OASE President Tim Sweeney, who is the Coquille School District superintendent. Barry’s staff contacted every family in the school district within one week of the fire to get a bead on where the families were located and how they were faring after the massively destructive fire. Barry praised the overwhelming success of Southern Oregon

Barry is a South Medford High School, Southern Oregon University and Linfield University graduate who taught health and math classes before becoming Phoenix High School’s vice principal, Orchard Hill Elementary’s principal and assistant superintendent at Phoenix-Talent. He’s been Phoenix-Talent superintendent since 2017.
