embracing new challenges With the courage to try new things and make new friends, Henry Boudreaux is quick to adapt to any situation by riley omonaka ’24
A
Whether he’s between the posts or traveling the world, Henry Boudreaux of the Linfield University men’s soccer team is always looking to spread goodness to the world. Whether he’s making new friends or learning a new skill, Boudreaux is always doing his best to make himself and others happy. “Henry’s the kind of person who strives for excellence in his own endeavors but is usually thinking about other people,” says his mother, Hilary Gaines. “He’s generous with his thoughtfulness.” A friend to many, Boudreaux’s favorite benefit of Linfield campus life is the opportunity to make connections. Boudreaux has a steady and reliable personality making him both a good friend and capable goalkeeper. “Honestly, the people here at Linfield have made it memorable for me,” he says. “I have made friends from all walks of life and I like being able to know a large portion of the campus population.” It makes sense that Boudreaux would enjoy being surrounded by others. Even during his youth, he spent a lot of time with his family. They never pushed him to pursue any one sport or position but instead allowed him to explore who he wanted to be. Boudreaux credits much of his growth to his family’s influence. Boudreaux grew up in a family of athletes. From his mom and dad to his aunt, whom he idolizes, he had no shortage of advisors and supporters. From his hometown of Beaverton, Oregon, to McMinnville, Boudreaux has developed a solid community around him. “My dad was a goalkeeper in lacrosse when he was in high school and without him pushing me towards it, I gravitated to be a goalkeeper in soccer,” Boudreaux says, noting that long after he stepped between the posts, his younger sister followed suit. Through soccer, Boudreaux has visited many countries near and far. He has played in Canada, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. While soccer has been the conduit for his many travels, he owes his appreciation to his parents for supporting him. “My No.1 goal as a parent is to give him a loving foundation from which to grow,” says Gaines. “I will always be proud of him and enjoy watching him grow as a person.” In addition to his parents, Boudreaux is grateful for the strong example his aunt set for him. She was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare and is currently the CEO of Anthem. “My biggest role model growing up was my aunt, Gail Boudreaux,” Henry says. “In college, she was an amazing athlete and she’s honestly the hardest-working person I’ve ever met.”

Henry Boudreaux has come to mirror those whom he admires. He possesses a strong work ethic and a reliable nature. After transferring to Linfield from Midland University in Nebraska during the spring of 2021, he worked hard to earn playing time. After riding the bench for the remainder of his first year and all of his sophomore year, Boudreaux has emerged as the Wildcats’ most consistent goaltender. Only time will tell how Boudreaux will continue to grow his game in his remaining time at Linfield. Constantly working towards discovering and nurturing his passions, Boudreaux recently switched majors from finance to computer science to pursue his interest in cyber security. “I would like to get into cyber security specifically, and if possible, try to work as a special agent in the FBI. A family friend of mine knows an FBI agent who I talked to for hours and it seemed like something I could see myself doing,” Boudreaux says. Away from school and soccer, Boudreaux enjoys a myriad of activities ranging from reading to playing musical instruments. He is currently learning both guitar and piano. He also loves playing volleyball, hiking and going to the beach. “My favorite sport to play is volleyball,” he says. “I like jumping.” When he’s not enjoying the outdoors, Boudreaux can be found strumming the guitar. He remains a good friend who is loyal and genuine. Boudreaux mirrors the strong mentorship and loving support he has received over the years. Forming new friendships comes naturally to him, making him an asset to the Linfield men’s soccer team because of his leadership abilities. “Henry has tried so many new things and has had the courage to revise his vision,” says Gaines. “He is learning a lot about what will make him happy going forward. He loves a challenge.”
SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX
THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.
In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase
2 could begin as early as 2021. Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand. Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

Sid Kosaris scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to Willamette last week. He ranks second in the NWC with 18 shots on goal. Seamus Miller and Patrick Moes have two goals and one assist apiece. Angel Hernandez leads the ‘Cats with 1,015 minutes played. Henry Boudreaux is 3-4-1 with three shutouts and 36 saves in his nine starts in goal. WHITWORTH AT A GLANCE Whitworth is coming off a 2-0 loss to Whitman in Walla Walla. The Pirates lead the NWC with 17.5 shots per match. Beckett Arthur leads the NWC with 40 shots and 24 shots on goal. He has five goals and four assists on the season. Tyler Wisen is right behind Arthur with four goals while Jaime Rodriguez has three goals and a team-leading five assists, which are tied for second in the NWC. An-drew Wolotira is 4-4-0 in goal with 21 saves and a 1.71 goals against average. THE SERIES Linfield is 12-33-8 in the all-time series with Whitworth. Seven of those wins came in McMinnville. The ‘Cats swept the season series in 2018 and 2019, but the Pirates won both meetings in 2021. The Pirates took the first meeting of this sea-son, winning 3-0 on Oct. 2 in Spokane.

HEAD COACH ANDREW DUVALL
A
ndrew Duvall is in his third year as head coach of the Linfield men’s soccer program. Duvall came to Linfield after spending eight years as assistant men’s coach at Concordia University-Portland. While at Concordia, Duvall managed a multitude of responsibilities, including recruiting, team training, academic mentorship, team travel, program budgeting, camps, team equipment and team scheduling. The CU men’s program compiled a record of 90-60-14 during Duvall’s tenure, all while transitioning from an NAIA institution to a full-fledged member of NCAA Division II. As a player, Duvall lettered four seasons in soccer at Concordia from 1999 through 2002, playing in 73 career matches. He began as an assistant coach at Concordia in 2011.

Duvall holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a USSF National Youth License. He completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Concordia in 2003 and went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in sport administration and coaching from the University of New Mexico in 2011. Duvall has been a head coach, age group coordinator, assistant director of coaching and director of coaching for various youth soccer organizations in Washington, New Mexico and Oregon. At Concordia, Duvall served as the athletic department’s director of internal operations, facilities coordinator, and taught courses as an adjunct professor within the School of Management and Department of Exercise and Sport Science.

THE TOPCAT CLUB
The Linfield University TopCat Club serves as a support organization to the 21 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams and the more than 500 students who participate in athletics each year. Each year, support from the TopCat Club is essential to maintaining and expanding each of these programs. The mission of the TopCat Club is to provide students with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the overall Linfield athletics program. RECENT HONORS The NWC honors football standouts Joel Valadez and Blaze Holoni for their contributions in a 35-17 road win The trip to the Whitworth Pine Bowl is always a tough test for any NWC football team, but Linfield took care of business in a 35-17 win over the Pirates last Saturday to stay unbeaten. Following a hard-fought game against a program that has always been competitive in recent memory, the Wildcats cashed in two more weekly honors from the NWC, announced joel valadez Monday. Joel Valadez was named the NWC Football Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week while Blaze Holani earned Defensive StudentAthlete of the Week honors. Valadez went off to lead the receiving corps. The junior wide receiver from Grants Pass caught 11 passes for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the first for 37 yards and the second blaze holani for 41. The reigning NWC Freshman of the Year ranks second in the NWC with 104.8 receiving yards per game. The Wildcats earned the Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week honor after every game so far this season. Holani joins fellow linebacker Blake Rybar and defensive end Travis Swanson, who received the award twice. Holani picked up four tackles against the Pirates, including three sacks for a loss of 10 yards. Linfield enters the week at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in NWC play. The ‘Cats remain idle at No. 7 in the latest D3football.com Top 25. They hold on to the No. 5 spot in this week’s AFCA poll.

milner, stallard to handle soccer play-by-play The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield soccer matches in 2022. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts and play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or Smart TV. Live coverage begins 15 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown. Linfield junior Isaac Milner begins his second season as the play-by-play voice of Wildcats men’s and women’s soccer. Milner started his broadcasting experience with the LSN last season covering soccer, providing color commentary on basketball broadcasts, handling occasional play-by-play duties for volleyball, basketball and softball as well as providing crucial production support on football, softball, tennis and swimming webcasts.
Senior Jack Stallard, a current member of the Linfield men’s basketball team, will also mix-in as an occasional play-by-play commentary voice. Stallard started out in broadcasting for the LSN last spring, calling play-by-play for baseball and softball. LSN live broadcasts are under the isaac milner direction of the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator, Joe Stuart. In his second year in the position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs. LINFIELD IN THE NEWS Linfield rated as the top-rated liberal arts school in Oregon Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and Rankings. And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility. In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list. The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible. Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.” U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West. Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021. Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. OREGON SPORTS HALL OF FAME Linfield graduate Terry Durham, who officiated in the NBA for 24 seasons, earns the state’s highest sports honor Linfield University graduate Terry Durham, who started to officiate basketball while in middle school but is better known for his 24-year career working games in the National Basketball Association, headlined the 2022 class of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame that was inducted Sunday, Oct. 9, at Portland’s Providence Park. A 1968 Linfield graduate, Durham joined coaches Dennis Erickson and Dave Gasser, basketball players Fred Jones and Felicia Ragland, master’s athlete Becky Sisley and hockey standout Connie Madigan in this year’s Oregon Sports Hall of Fame class. While he was a student at McMinnville High School, Durham stood next to his father, head football coach, Paul Durham, on the Linfield sidelines and took notes during games. When he entered Linfield and was a member of the Wildcats football team, he again stood on the sidelines, not playing quarterback much as a freshman and sophomore. Durham went on to become a two-time all-Northwest Conference quarterback. He was one of the leaders of the 1965 Linfield team, which won conference and went on to the NAIA national semifinals where the Wildcats knocked off Sul Ross State,
30-27, in Alpine, Texas. He played basketball as a freshman, then participated only in college intramurals until Coach Ted Wilson called. When Wilson kicked players off the 1966-67 Linfield basketball team, Terry became a starting guard. Linfield tied for the conference title, beat Western Oregon in the NAIA district playoffs and went to Kansas City, losing by a point in the opening round to the eventual national champion. His first coaching experience was in football at Linfield in 1969 under Coach Ad Rutschman, while he earned a master’s of education degree. Later, he coached football at Sunset and Klamath Union high schools, and was a football graduate assistant at Stanford University. He officiated junior high school, Linfield intramurals, high school, small and major college basketball games, then working eight NBA summer camps before being hired fulltime by the association. Durham previously was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and the McMinnville High School Hall of Fame in 2011.
