WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT NO DETAIL TOO SMALL Since coming to Linfield, Jackson Horner has learned to focus on the little things, a habit that should serve him well as he enters the field of data analytics by RILEY OMONAKA ’24

S

eemingly born to play baseball, Linfield University’s Jackson Horner has spent nearly his entire life perfecting his game. From watching his dad play and coach baseball from a young age, to devoting much of his time to the sport, Horner has all the proverbial bases covered when it comes to excelling on the diamond. Growing up in a baseball-oriented family, Horner had a ball in his hand even before he could walk. He learned how to play the game at an early age and found love and connection through the sport. “I have been around the game since I was a baby,” says the Wildcats’ starting third baseman, whose father, Jim, played and coached for 11 years within the Seattle Mariners organization. “My dad was still in the middle of his playing career when I was born and began coaching shortly after. I guess I started playing when I could move around on two feet.” Since entering the Linfield baseball program as a freshman, Horner has learned to appreciate how paying attention to small details can have a profound effect on his game. Says Horner: “My greatest takeaway from athletics at Linfield is there is no small task. Everything is equally important in order to get the team to where we want to be.” Horner plays primarily third base, but is capable of playing any infield position. Since coming to Linfield he’s bounced around the lineup a bunch, but nonetheless enjoys the variety of filling numerous on-field roles. Growing up in Idaho, Horner chose to venture out of state to attend college in order to be able to participate in a unique sport and school experience. Balancing school and sports can often be difficult, but Linfield prides itself on making balancing the demands of each as easy and effortless as possible. This made Horner’s college decision simpler. He says having access to the resources Linfield offers its student-athletes to excel in facets of an athlete’s life is unbeatable. “Linfield gave me the unique opportunity to play a sport and get all the life skills from that,” 2

MARCH 5-6, 2022

says Jackson, adding “I want to explore the area I want to get my degree in and pursue that with all of the resources necessary.” Not knowing exactly what he wanted to major in as a freshman, Horner took advantage of Linfield’s wide-ranging liberal arts curriculum. He seized the opportunity to enroll in multiple classes outside of his original path of study in hopes of discovering new and interesting pathways. Eventually, he settled on majoring in economics. Knowing that baseball is a game of statistical analysis, it made sense for a baseball enthusiast who was considering going into the field of analysis. “I took many different classes and quite frankly, I really enjoyed the material and its applications moving forward,” Horner says. He found he could apply what he was learning within his economics major and apply those principles to his sport, becoming a better player in the process. Though he’s unsure of what his next steps might be after Linfield, Horner is hopeful baseball will remain a large part of his life. “I would love to stay in the game in some aspects after graduation,” he says. “That might not be possible, and if not, we’ll go from there.” With games every weekend, lengthy practices during the week, and lots of time spent in the weight room, being a member of the Linfield baseball team is no short-term commitment. It leaves Horner with little time to do things outside of school and baseball. When he does find some free time, Horner can be found hanging out with his teammates or watching movies. He loves classic movies and can offer opinions on a wide array of genres. Horner is definitely the first person to call when trying to select a movie to watch. “My favorite movie is ‘The Shawshank Redemption,’” he says with a smile. “That movie is an all-time classic and has one of the best underlying storylines ever.” Whether it’s playing third base, second base or first base, analyzing a graph, or picking out a movie, Horner is ready to make quick decisions while ensuring every detail is accounted for. He entered the season with a positive attitude and is excited to be a part of the new plateaus the Linfield baseball team is going to reach this spring.

WOMEN’S SPORTS HISTORY SOUGHT Did you participate in women’s sports while at Linfield? Dr. Laura Kenow, professor in Health, Human Performance, and Athletics, is heading efforts to create a more complete historical record of women’s sports at Linfield. Help is needed from those who participated prior to 1990, but all stories are welcome. Please complete this short survey to share your Linfield women’s sport experiences and help build our historical knowledge. Throughout the spring and fall of ’22 there will be a variety of events celebrating Linfield Women’s Athletics as part of the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. If you have questions about the survey, sharing your story, or the upcoming events, please contact alumni@linfield.edu.

OUTDOOR SPECTATOR PROTOCOLS COVID cases are declining in Oregon, however, we still need to continue to ensure that all members of our community remain as healthy as possible during the COVID pandemic. Therefore, Linfield Athletics is adjusting our current outdoor athletic contest spectator policy to the following.

All individuals (age 5 and over)

entering any athletics venue must provide proof of COVID-19 full vaccination (a photo is acceptable) along with photo identification. No exemptions are allowed. Proof of a booster is not required yet. Due to the COVID-19 vaccine policy for Linfield faculty, staff and students, Linfield individuals must simply show their current Linfield ID for admittance into athletics venues. According to Linfield University policy, masks must be worn by spectators (age 5 and over) if physical distancing cannot be maintained while outdoors, unless actively eating or drinking. Concessions will be available. More information about Linfield University’s COVID-19

response can be found at linfield.edu/covid.
