WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT
fully immersed
It took a nearly a year before Gillyan Landis would completely commit herself to being part of her team’s culture. Now the Wildcats are a much better team for it. by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27
S
tanding an imposing 6 feet, 2 inches, Linfield University junior Gillyan Landis has a commanding presence on and off the basketball court. Landis’s talent and drive for the game of basketball make her a standout player whose contributions to the team are critical to the Wildcats’ success, says head coach Casey Bunn-Wilson. “Gillyan has been an awesome force inside and out for us. She brings a lot of diversity because of her height and ability to shoot from the outside. It’s been really fun to see her grow on and off the court over the last three years. She’s strong-willed and learning to believe in herself more and more.” Landis attributes much of her growth to her head coach, whom she deeply admires. “I remember meeting Casey and she was awesome. She was really nice,” says Landis. “Since I’ve been here, she’s been super caring and always wanting to help me and make me better.” It was Bunn-Wilson who showed Landis how much potential the Linfield community offers and got the player to become a Wildcat. Despite how taken Landis was with the Linfield players, her freshman season was immensely challenging. Between playing under COVID restrictions, a huge team of around 20 girls, and a difficult dynamic, Landis was struggling. “We had a lot of players my freshman year and so there was a lot of different, conflicting people. Everyone was fighting for positions, and we were a really young team. We had to grow up quickly,” she says. And so, they did. The players become more focused than ever on healthy relationships and an appreciation of achieving a common goal. For Landis, this took some introspection and changes in how she approached the team. “I went home a lot when I was a freshman. I didn’t immerse myself into the whole college experience,” says the Yakima, Washington, native. “Then my sophomore year, I changed that, and I made myself more present with the team.”

This effort has paid off handsomely. Landis has developed a new mindset that allows her to be a better, more fulfilled teammate and player. “I’m more team-first. I put my teammates above everything. I feel like that’s what really helped us this past year and coming into this past season. We’re just really close. We know each other so well, we know how we play, we know things we can and can’t do on the court. We know how to lift each other up and we know how to do all the things that teammates need.” Part of the Wildcats’ unique ability to maintain such close ties comes from placing emphasis on team bonding from the beginning. Landis and fellow veterans do not want incoming players to experience the same challenges they did, and for this reason they make a conscious effort to welcome new players with open arms. “We really made it our goal to become close with the freshmen,” she says. “I think that’s really helped us.” Given how passionate Landis is about basketball, it is no surprise she is pursuing a degree in exercise science in order to stay connected to sports and activity. She approaches her major with the same level of commitment as she does her sport and spends much of her time in the treatment center, where she has a strong relationship with Linfield athletic trainer Greg Hill. After spending so much time with Landis and watching her hone her passion, Hill offers nothing but praise for his protégé. “Gillyan is an amazing person. She has a great sense of humor. She cares deeply about her teammates, and it shows. She’s a quick learner and never makes the same mistake twice,” says Hill. “The thing that stands out most to me, and I’m not sure how you explain it, but it’s her stubborn, tenacious and determined perseverance. She identifies a task or a goal and she just makes up her mind she’s going to get it done – and she does. And then she finds the next one and she goes again. Even if there’s an obstacle or a roadblock, she doesn’t ever show any signs of quitting.” Landis’s level of single-minded determination is sure to serve her team well as the Wildcats progress through this basketball season, already one of Linfield’s most successful starts in years. Landis says that she’s “feeling very good about” the team’s chances in conference play and describes how fulfilling reaching the playoffs and performing well would be: “Coming from my freshman year, when we only won one game, it would be a very big turn of events. It would be huge, not just for me, but for the whole team.”

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.
Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

LINFIELD NEWS The University announced Dec. 26 the naming of Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as interim president, succeeding Miles K. Davis Linfield University has named Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as its interim president. Johnson served as Oregon State University’s interim president during the 2021-22 academic year. Before that, she spent 12 years as an OSU vice president and the top administrator at the university’s Cascades Campus in Bend. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wisconsin, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Michigan State. “I’m very excited to be joining the students, faculty and staff of Linfield University,” said Johnson, who previously served as an OSU faculty member, department chair and associate dean for academic affairs. “Together, along with our alumni and community members, we can continue to enhance Linfield’s long history of providing world-class educational experiences for our students.” Johnson, who met with the Linfield leadership team before agreeing to accept the position, will begin serving as the 21st president in the institution’s history as of January 1. She owns a home in the Bend area, but will relocate during her time as interim president into the president’s house on the McMinnville campus along with her wife, Lori Elkins. Linfield trustees Kirby Dyess and Marvin Henberg co-chaired
the selection committee that was given the job of identifying an interim president following the Nov. 2 resignation of President Miles K. Davis. Davis remained as president until an interim could be named, and pledged to work with the new president during any necessary transition period. “The selection committee wanted someone for the interim position who was not simply a caretaker but an active, collaborative president who can both lead and set the stage for recruiting a new full-time president,” said Henberg, who was Linfield’s interim president during the 2005-06 academic year before moving on to serve as College of Idaho president for six years. “I have no doubt that Becky can do all this and more.” Lucinda Day Fournier, chair of the Linfield board of trustees, thanked the interim president selection committee for its hard work, and said she is thrilled at the selection of Dr. Johnson. She said information regarding the search for the university’s next fulltime president will be released following the next board meeting in February. The national search will involve students, faculty and staff members, and regular updates will be posted to linfield.edu/ presidentialsearch. Johnson said she understands the responsibility of the interim president role, and looks forward to getting to know the Linfield community in the weeks and months ahead. “My experiences leading a large public university as interim president, and a small branch campus in Bend, give me a lot of experience to draw upon at Linfield,” Johnson said. “I really look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff, and getting to know the campuses and communities.”
