HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH

LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure

W

ITH MORE THAN 25 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 130-26 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012 and ’13). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

no regrets Setting lofty goals for himself, Colton Ramos is making the most of his Linfield football experience

C

by riley omonaka ’24

olton Ramos is always the first guy to pick up his teammates. The fifth-year senior punter on the Linfield University football team desires to be the best version of himself and support his team any way he can. He never holds back and is seldom, if ever, satisfied with his play. Always looking to improve, Ramos hasn’t slowed down at all this year. His high goals are paralleled only by his unrelenting work ethic. He’s his own worst critic, believing his play has not been up to par, yet his teammates remain impressed by his effort. “Colton’s always looking for ways to better his punts or his holds on field goals,” says long-snapper Zack Jenkins. This fall, the McMinnville native is aiming to be ranked No. 1 statistically among Division III punters, a lofty position he held for five weeks during his sophomore season. Ramos says one of his longtime aspirations has been to be an All-American. Jenkins believes Ramos has the talent and work ethic to back up the high aims. “Whether it’s walking a lap on the track to work on his punt drops, or having one of us throw him field goal snaps to practice getting the ball down in the right spot, there’s always something he wants to do to improve,” says Jenkins. In 2019, his junior season, Ramos’ punts averaged 43.4 yards and his kickoffs averaged 56.4 yards. Ramos is often grinding untold hours of the day to reach his goals and improve his skills. His schedule is incredibly demanding and requires strong time management skills. “I work 6 a.m to 3 p.m every day, work out, then go to practice,” Ramos says, “I just have to be present and be focused on my current task and I will be fine. It’s a grind but I love it.” Ramos jumps at every opportunity to help his friends, and is known as one of the Wildcats’ most reliable and proactive teammates. He earns respect and admiration of everyone who meets him. “He’s a great teammate and friend. He’s always there for you. If I’m struggling with snaps and I ask him to catch a few after practice, he’ll always say ‘Yes,’” Jenkins says. “I’ve had car problems in the past and he was the first guy I texted and he didn’t even think twice before coming to help.” During his career, there have been many

naysayers telling him he wouldn’t make it collegiately. Ramos couldn’t have proved them more wrong. As he continues to roll through the competition, his tenacity fuels him. His love for the team only furthers his drive to be successful. “The team is a brotherhood,” says Ramos. “The guys come out every day and have a good time while still keeping the main goal in mind. We are serious when we need to be and we win games when we need to.” For all his hard work, Ramos certainly knows how to have a good time. Whether he’s under the stadium lights or hanging out with his friends, Ramos’ special talent is making other people smile. “Colton and I both try and keep things light and fun, which can be hard during some cold November practices,” Jenkins says. “He’ll always be joking around with our starting defense and the scout offense. He’ll even run routes as a scout wide receiver.” Besides football, Ramos is a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and is involved with Young Life on campus. In his free time, Ramos can be found hiking the local trails. An outdoors fanatic, it’s no surprise he can frequently be found hiking, camping or hunting. By all accounts, Ramos is a first-rate adventurer. It’s easy to see why Ramos is combining his love of the outdoors with academics as he pursues a degree in environmental policy. His favorite class at Linfield has been Forest Ecology. Ramos loves learning about environmental policy because unlike other science classes, environmental science takes him outdoors. Sitting in labs around benches isn’t really Ramos’ style, but hiking to test water quality in the Pacific Northwest is right up his alley. After graduation, Ramos plans to follow his heart and work in nature. “I’d love to work for the National Parks Service,” Ramos says. “I’d like to start out by maintaining trails and work my way up from there. I just want to be outside.” Ramos is a hard worker to his core. The strides he takes to be his best self both academically and athletically are awe inspiring. To his teammates, he is a reliable and compassionate friend. Despite juggling a hectic schedule, he always makes time for the important people in his life. While 2021 is his final season playing at the Catdome, he’ll always have the Wildcat spirit. His strength of spirit allows him to overcome any challenges life throws his way. And his passion for the outdoors is leading him toward a career path that guarantees Ramos satisfaction. Ramos really only has one thing to say about his time at Linfield: “I love Linfield football and I’ve got no regrets. Roll ’Cats!”

LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”

And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS University adding men’s and women’s wrestling to the stable of sports offerings, marking the first additions in 25 years Linfield University on Monday announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022. The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.” The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. “Linfield right now is growing from a college into a university, opening a second campus, building a new $37 million science center and adding graduate programs, among other things,” said Miles K. Davis, Linfield president. “The addition of men’s and women’s wrestling fits right in with that growth trajectory. I look forward to sitting matside in Ted Wilson Gymnasium and cheering for Wildcat wrestlers in the years ahead.” The group Restore College Wrestling Oregon has been meeting with Linfield’s athletic department for three years, discussing plans, offering help and exploring opportunities together. Larry Bielenberg, a four-time NCAA All-American and the 1975 heavyweight national

champion for Oregon State, has been a primary point of contact for RCWOR through that time. “We are thrilled that Linfield is restarting its men’s program and initiating a new women’s program,” said Bielenberg, whose daughter graduated from Linfield in 2006. “It’s been a pleasure for Restore College Wrestling Oregon to work with Garry Kilgore and we appreciate the decision from President Davis to make it happen. This will be the fifth program RCWOR has helped start in the state of Oregon, which in turn helps train and educate a new generation of teachers, coaches and professionals. We’re happy to be a part of it.”
