WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

balancing act Few student-athletes are as fully engaged in their major and campus life as Wildcats defender Kami Echiverri by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27

T

he mantra “Grit and Grace” defines how the Linfield University women’s soc-cer team behaves on the field. Wildcats junior Kami Echiverri takes that persona a step further by living it in every aspect of her life. In addition to her role as an outside back, Echiverri is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority on campus, as well as the co-chair of the Hui ō Lōkahi Club, which celebrates the traditions and cultures of the people of Hawai’i. With such a packed schedule, it would be easy for Echiverri to be quickly overwhelmed, but she talks about her commitments with a quiet confidence that indicates she knows she is well-equipped to handle them all. “When you’ve been balancing so much for so long, it kind of becomes a routine,” she says. Indeed, Echiverri’s entire life has prepared her well for the balancing and timemanagement skills required to function at a high level across many different areas. Born and raised on Maui, Hawai’i, Echiverri has been playing soccer for 15 years, ever since her mother spontaneously brought up the idea. Echiver-ri’s talent was clear from the start, beginning with recreational teams for two years before moving on to a club program. After developing her skills and sense-of-self as a more serious soccer player for a year and a half, Echiverri finally joined the Valley Isle Soccer Academy, where she remained until it was time to bring her talent to Linfield. “Our team was different from all the other teams on Maui,” Echiverri says, detailing how the technique and plays she learned at the academy contrasted with the idea that soccer was simply a sport about who could kick the ball hardest and run the fastest. The Valley Isle coaches encouraged Echiverri and her teammates to in-clude soccer in their aspirations for the future and helped them network so they could play in college. As with so many of current students, Echiverri was drawn to McMinnville by the “vibes” of Linfield’s unique community, as well as the campus architecture and weight room. Even with her love for Linfield, Echiverri maintains strong ties to her roots in Hawai’i and an immense gratitude for the people who helped shape into her the confident and capable person she is today. “I’m really

4

thankful for my parents and the sacrifices they have made for me,” she says, detailing how they have modeled high standards of hard work and perseverance. The pride that Echiverri exudes when discussing her parents surely goes both ways, especially considering everything she has done to help highlight Hawai’ian culture and traditions throughout Linfield’s campus. She takes joy in creating spaces where “not only the Hawai’ian community, but the Polyne-sian community can come together to show the school what their culture is about.” This is most prominent at Linfield’s annual lūʻau, where it is “so nice to see people showing up and showing out and loving it.” Last year’s lūʻau was Linfield’s 50th annual event. Echiverri and her team truly put on a show wor-thy of the occasion. “It went so well,” Echiverri says. “I couldn’t have been more proud.” While Hui ō Lōkahi hopes to continue to expand its impact by doing “more educational activities” for the Linfield community, all of its planning members are fall athletes, which places some limits on how active they can be at the moment. Of course, a sacrifice of this magnitude feels well worth it to Echiverri, who is stepping gracefully into her role as a leader on the soccer field. Before the season started, the older players came to a mutual agreement that they wanted the team culture to be defined by a “positive environment” and a “close-knit” community. Echiverri and her peers have brought this goal to fru-ition and she practically glows with pride when describing how in-sync every-one feels. “There’s so much love,” she says. This sentiment is supported by the high regard Echiverri’s peers hold her in. Teammate Kamahie Samudio says she “would trust Kami with my life because no one fights harder than her.” Though passionate about soccer, Echiverri is realistic when it comes to envisioning the role the sport will play in her future. “It’s really hard on the body,” she says, explaining how she believes these next two years at Linfield will be her last playing organized sports. Yet even so, she knows she wants to remain involved in sports, which is where her exercise science major comes in. Echiverri is just as dedicated to and motivated by her major as she is with all her activities, and working with Linfield’s strength and conditioning team has helped her find her calling. The quick thinking and “fluidity of the job” appeal to her. She knows it will allow her to grow her understanding of human anatomy, which has been her favorite class so far at Linfield. There’s no doubt that the passion and tenacity that define Echiverri will allow her to achieve all her future goals and more as she continues to move forward in life with a strong appreciation of where she started.

milner, jones to handle soccer play-by-play The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield soccer matches in 2022. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts and play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or Smart TV. Live coverage begins 15 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown. Linfield senior Isaac Milner begins his third season as the play-by-play voice of Wildcats men’s and women’s soccer. Milner started his broadcasting experience with the LSN last season covering soccer, providing color commentary on basketball broadcasts, handling occasional play-by-play duties for volleyball, basketball and softball as well as providing crucial production support on football, softball, tennis and swimming webcasts.

Freshman Levi Jones joins the stable of Linfield sports broadcasters this fall. He’ll alternate with Milner behind the microphone on soccer broadcasts. LSN live broadcasts are under the direction of Joe Stuart, the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator. In his third year in the isaac milner position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs. All LSN broadcasts, both live and on demand, can be accessed at golinfieldwildcats.com/watch or in the Linfield Athletics app on mobile, tablet or smart TVs.
