HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH

LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure

W

ITH MORE THAN 25 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 127-26 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012 and ’13). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

FOR THE LOVE OF FOOTBALL Growing up in a football family, Connor McNabb’s passion for the sport should come as no surprise

T

by ELLIE HOLSTINE ’24

here is no question what matters most to Connor McNabb. It’s the sport of football. “My dad was the head football coach at my high school, so football has been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember,” says the junior running back. From a young age, a love of football was instilled into McNabb, from watching high school games as a kid to playing the annual Thanksgiving family football game with his family. Constantly being surrounded by people who were passionate about football, it came as no surprise that McNabb wanted to pursue the sport in college. McNabb is from the small town of Scappoose, Oregon, population 6,592. The high school football games there are a important part of the community’s social atmosphere. Being the coach’s son, McNabb felt constant pressure on him to work hard and perform well. Since coming to Linfield, “the pressure was off,” says McNabb. “I got to enjoy playing football again.” Currently, McNabb is pursuing a degree in management and possibly education. “To be honest, I never thought much of what I would do once football was over. My mom is a teacher and I can imagine myself following her steps and teaching,” he says. Outside of football, McNabb is involved in the Theta Chi fraternity on campus and participates in track and field as a sprinter in the spring. As a sophomore, McNabb debuted at his first collegiate track meet. Linfield track coach Travis Olson was ecstatic after he successfully convinced McNabb to become a dual-sport athlete. With a surprisingly quick 100-meter time, McNabb was able to qualify to compete at the conference championships. Whatever the season is, and no matter where he’s at, McNabb is always eager to play. Whether that’s on the sidelines of a football game, a player out on the field, or cheering on his teammates on a track team, you can always count on McNabb to be there

and have the most energy, and be beyond excited to watch his teammates succeed. “Connor is a selfless, upstanding teammate, who puts the team above himself in all situations, no matter what,” said roommate and teammate Mason Kincheloe. Looking into the season, McNabb’s goals are to see the team succeed and to see all the running backs improve. He wants everybody on the team to stay excited about football and wants all players to feel the same kind of joy that football brings him. “Being on the team means I get to participate in my favorite sport with my friends and work together to be the best we can be,” he says. “I want to see everyone do well. Coming to Linfield as a freshman, McNabb was known for two things: His legendary grilled cheese sandwiches and for being a talented football player. McNabb had the opportunity to log lots of minutes on the field during the initial season with the ‘Cats. Although COVID-19 changed much within Linfield’s athletic department, the football team was still able to practice during the spring. As a sophomore, teammates had the opportunity to observe the goofy side of McNabb, who grew out his hair, just for the fun of it. “I liked how my long hair looked in my helmet,” he says. Though the Wildcats did not compete in football games during the 202021 school year, McNabb nonetheless became more confident in his football skills as and was drawn closer to his teammates. Even though there were only intrasquad scrimmages during his sophomore year, it was exciting to see McNabb’s positive attitude on and off the field and his influence on the team’s dynamic. “Connor supports anyone and everyone on the team, no matter how skilled they are or what their role is on the team. He will be there cheering you on, no matter what,” Kincheloe says. McNabb is the kind of person you always want in your corner. Though it’s been a long 22-month wait, Linfield Football is back and Connor McNabb is ready show the rest of the Northwest Conference just how far he’s come.

1971 BASEBALL TEAM TRIBUTE 50 years ago, Linfield’s never-say-never Wildcats fought off elimination multiple times to claim the NAIA crown

•The 1971 baseball team won 14 of 18

games in Northwest Conference play. •To reach the national tournament, Linfield first defeated Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon) in District play, then beat Central Washington to win the West Coast Area tournament. •The 1971 team competed in Phoenix, Arizona, for the national title as the tournament’s eighth and lowest seed. At the time, one tournament official called it “the wildest tournament we have ever had.” •This was mainly due to Linfield’s repeated comeback performances. In its first three tournament wins, the Wildcats came back from at least a five-run deficit. •After the four straight win, Linfield suffered its first lost to David Lipscomb College of Tennessee by one run to force a final game. Linfield won that game and the national championship by one run in extra innings. •Four players were appointed to the

all-tournament team: Vince Doherty (Pitcher), Spencer Wales (Pitcher), Ron Webb (Catcher) and Mike Springer (1B). •Ron Webb was the tournament MVP and an NAIA All-American selection. •Mike Springer was the “Bronze Glove” winner as the tournament’s outstanding defensive player. •Linfield set or tied several tournament records. These included total base hits, team batting average and most double plays in a single game. In addition, two players (Webb and Springer) had 13 hits which tied a personal performance tournament record. •One fact that made the 1971 team unique as a national champion was that each member of the team played baseball at – and graduated from – an Oregon high school. •The 1971 baseball team was coached by the legendary Ad Rutschman. It was the Hall of Fame coach’s first collegiate level national championship team. •The 1971 team was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Former Linfield football player Brent Barry is named the Oregon School Superintendent of the Year by nick morgan, medford mail tribune Owing to his school district’s outreach after the Almeda fire and a rapid deployment of online resources for affected students and staff after the fire, former Linfield University football quarterback Brent Barry was recently named Oregon School Superintendent of the Year. The Oregon Association of School Executives surprised Barry with the honor last week during a Zoom meeting with other school district leaders across the state. Barry is superintendent of the Phoenix-Talent School District in southern Oregon. The honor puts the 1996 Linfield graduate in the running for the national superintendent of the year award issued by the American Association of School Administrators, according to a news release issued by the OASE and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators. The two organizations picked Barry for the honor because of the “exceptional” way the district navigated numerous challenges for its 2,375 students following the fire that demolished large parts of Phoenix and Talent and took out roughly a third of student and staff homes, according to OASE President Tim Sweeney, who is the Coquille School District superintendent. Barry’s staff contacted every family in the school district within one week of the fire to get a bead on where the families were located and how they were faring after the massively destructive fire. Barry praised the overwhelming success of Southern Oregon

business’ fundraising campaigns for getting the ball rolling. “Resources from Rogue Credit Union and Dutch Bros. really just set us up for success right off the bat to help support our families,” Barry said.
