TED WILSON GYMNASIUM

Ted Wilson Gym bears the name of the man who coached the Linfield basketball team longer and to more wins than any individual in school history. In 20 seasons, Wilson directed the Wildcats in over 500 games, compiling a 324-213 record. Riley Gym was nicknamed the “House of Hustle” out of respect for Wilson’s high-scoring teams, which averaged a school-record 96.5 points a game during the 1977-78 season.

Ted Wilson Gym is decorated with 18 Northwest Conference championship banners, 16 of which were won by Wilson between 1961 and 1981.

Wilson Gym, with 1,924 seats, is contained within Linfield’s 112,000-squarefoot Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex which opened in 1989.

GAME TIME

The new structure was dramatic a departure from cramped Riley Gym. The state-of-the-art facility contains locker rooms, offices and classrooms, a fully equipped athletic training room along with display areas that house the trophies and recognitions of past Linfield teams and athletes.

In 1920, Riley Gym was built adjacent to historic Pioneer Hall at a cost of just over $25,000. Riley Gym served as the basketball home of the Wildcats for 67 seasons. A granddaddy of small college gyms, Riley played host to its first game in December, 1921, and its last game in February, 1989.

Linfield’s first on-campus basketball court was located on the north end of campus in the building now known as Newby

Hall. The floor was miniature by today’s standards and there were no boundary lines.

The surrounding walls prevented players from leaving the playing area. As a game was about to start, someone would check that all the doors were closed tight, the ball would be tipped off at center court, and it was every player for himself.

Up until 1907, Newby Hall, nicknamed the “Chem Shack,” was illuminated by candles with tin reflectors. Many of the gyms the Wildcats played in were smaller and even more primitive than the one on the Linfield campus.

Around 1900, Linfield played its home games in the old pavilion in the city park.

Following practices and games, players heated their own shower water using a woodburning boiler.

The Farnham Electric Pregame Show starts joe stuart 15 minutes prior to each basketball game’s scheduled kickoff. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up, with analysis, final statistics and live interviews with players and coaches.

McMinnville native Joe Stuart begins his sixth season as the lead basketball play-by-play announcer. A 2020 Linfield graduate, Stuart is the athletic department’s broadcast coordinator, isaac milner managing all aspects of Linfield’s webcasting outreach, while assisting with sports communications and social media needs.

Stuart got his start in sports broadcasting with LSN, calling play-by-place for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball contests. He also served as football sideline reporter for two seasons.

Current Linfield men’s tennis player Isaac Milner embarks on his first season of involvement with Linfield basketball broadcasts, and will serve as color analyst and occasional play-by-play voice.

For the first time, all Linfield Sports Network broadcasts are available on the Roku app, making it possible for fans to watch live and archived games on their home televisions.

LINFIELD AT A GLANCE The Wildcats are looking to bounce back from three road losses last week. They rank third in the NWC with a 40.7 team field goal percentage. Freshman forward Gillyan Landis leads the team and ranks ninth in the NWC with 12.3 points per game while also ranking sixth with a 51.5 field goal percentage. Freshman guard Emma Schmerbach is averaging nine points and a team-leading five rebounds per game. She averaged 12 points per game last week, led by a 14-point performance at Whitworth on Tuesday.

Fellow freshman guard Rowan Cusack also played well in Spokane with a season-high 16 points against the Pirates.

PUGET SOUND AT A GLANCE The Loggers are coming off back-to-back wins over Pacific Lutheran and Pacific last week. The NWC’s top scoring team with 73 points per game, the Loggers also rank third in scoring defense, allowing 59.9 points per game. The Loggers are led offensively by sophomore Sophie Nilsson, who ranks third in the NWC with 16.8 points per game. Nilsson also ranks eighth with six rebounds per game and ninth with a 48.1 field goal percentage. Junior Samantha Swartout is averaging 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while sophomore Kennedy Brown isn’t far behind with 10.3 points per game.

THE SERIES Linfield and Puget Sound have met 49 times. The Loggers command the series with a 38-11 record. The ‘Cats are 7-15 against the Loggers at home and average 60.1 points per game in the series. The Loggers took the first meeting of the season, 74-49, on Dec. 3 in Tacoma.

THE RECORDS Linfield enters the week at 9-3 overall and is the only remaining unbeaten team in Northwest Conference play at 4-0. Tied for second in the standings, Pacific Lutheran enters at 9-5 overall with a 4-1 NWC mark.

LINFIELD AT A GLANCE The Wildcats rank second in the NWC with a 7.9 scoring margin, averaging 80.8 points per game while allowing 72.8 points per game. Fifth-year senior guard Dempsey Roggenbuck is the NWC’s leading scorer with 21.1 points per game. He is shooting 49.2 percent from the field, 36.6 percent from three-point range and a conference-leading 84.2 percent from the free throw line. Fellow fifth-year senior guard Max Lommen and senior forward Aaron Baune are both averaging 14.2 points per game while freshman guard Trey Bryant is scoring 10.3 points per game. Baune leads the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

PACIFIC LUTHERAN AT A GLANCE The Lutes have been solid on defense, leading the NWC with 67.8 points allowed per game while limiting opponents to 39 percent shooting. Senior Seth Hall sits right behind Roggenbuck in scoring, ranking second in the NWC with 21 points per game.

He is also fifth in the NWC with a 50 field goal percentage. Junior Sean McCurdy is averaging 11.9 points and a team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game, which is tied for third in the NWC. Senior Tyler Ashmore is just shy of double figures with 9.3 points per game.

THE SERIES Linfield and Pacific Lutheran have met 105 times. The ‘Cats hold a slight lead in the series with a 53-52 record. The ‘Cats are 36-15 against the Lutes at home and have won seven straight matchups.

The ‘Cats took both meetings in 2019-20, winning 68-54 in Tacoma and 88-75 in McMinnville.

Linfield Cheer and Stunt team places among top 10 squads at national competition The Linfield University Cheer and Stunt squad on Friday placed ninth in the finals of the 2022 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship at Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, Fla. The UCA National Championships spotlight dozens of college and university cheer squads from both large and small colleges and universities.

The event marks Linfield’s first foray into a large-scale

cheerleading and stunt competition. In the Small Co-Ed Division, Linfield earned ninth placed among 19 teams during Friday’s competition. Among the Wildcats’ seven NCAA Division I competitors were the University of Delaware, Hofstra University, Northern Kentucky University and Northern Arizona University.

The Wildcats performed the “On With Linfield” fight song, followed by a cheer, then ended with a “timeout” style routine.

WOMEN’S SPORTS HISTORY SOUGHT Did you participate in women’s sports while at Linfield? Dr. Laura Kenow, professor in Health, Human Performance, and Athletics, is heading efforts to create a more complete historical record of women’s sports at Linfield. Help is needed from those who participated prior to 1990, but all stories are welcome. Please complete this short survey to share your Linfield women’s sport experiences and help build our historical knowledge.

Throughout the spring and fall of ’22 there will be a variety of events celebrating Linfield Women’s Athletics as part of the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS To ensure that the Linfield Community, i.e.

Students, Staff, and Faculty, remain as healthy as possible during the latest surge of COVID cases due primarily to the Omicron Variant in Oregon, Linfield Athletics is adjusting our current athletic contest spectator policy to the following: For tonight’s basketball games, home and visiting student-athletes are allotted 4 family member spectator tickets; those 4 people will be on a list and must provide proof of vaccination at the door. They will also be expected to sit together at the event. No additional spectators will be allowed entry at this time.

These policies also are applicable to the home swim meet on January 30 except ONLY SENIORS on the Linfield swim team will be allowed to have guests.

All participants, coaches, spectators and operations personnel must comply with mask use

while inside our facilities (except players or officials during active competition and practice). This means wearing the mask over your mouth & nose at all times.

No exceptions AND non-compliant individuals will be told to leave the venue!

Spectators are asked to space themselves throughout the bleachers, as per physical distancing guidelines.

Concessions will not be sold until further notice.

Food is not allowed in our venues, but non-alcoholic drinks may be consumed during events as long as proper masking is taking place between actively taking a drink.

These adjustments are temporary and we will reevaluate all protocols regularly.
