Wildcats middle blocker Lexi Correa puts a new meaning to being one’s own fiercest advocate and ally by karlie vercauteren ’27
L
exi Correa’s attitude on Linfield University’s volleyball court is largely influenced by her Hawai’ian heritage. Born and raised in Kuliouou, Hawai’i, the 5-foot-11 middle blocker describes how her emphasis on team unity has evolved. “Aloha is a big thing in Hawai’i. That’s the base of what we’re raised off of. Being respectful of the coaches and each other helps us to be closer to each other and work better as a team and grow together.” Correa’s respect for her coaches is clear in how she orients herself at practice and especially at matches. Even in the midst of chaos, she listens in-tently to their feedback and immediately makes the corrections they suggest. Soon after the match ends, she is disseminating it with the coaches and planning how she can improve for the next time. Yet Correa’s evolution into the determined, intelligent player she is today has not come without hardship. Last year, Correa was one of just a few freshmen on a team largely comprised of seniors and she struggled with an atmosphere that did not feel inclusive or supportive. Throughout the season, she got so worn down that she quit the team in the spring for her “own mental health.” “Being so far away from home in a new environment with people I don’t know and not having that comfort blanket was really hard,” Correa says. Fortunately, she was able to find a greater sense of community within the Hui ō Lōkahi club. The club helped Correa better adjust to the culture shock of being so far from home and helped her rebuild her sense of self outside of volleyball. “I felt like I was at home when I was with (fellow club members),” she says. “Whatever I’m going through, they can help me.” With their support and her own mental fortitude, Correa eventually found herself “more ready to keep a positive mindset” and began to consider rejoining the volleyball program. “I was trying to figure out whether I was playing volleyball for me or for other reasons. I stepped back and got a chance to learn more

about myself,” she says. “I decided that the gym keeps me in check. It forces me to be on top of all my things. After being open with (head coach Haley Domeck) and just telling her what I’m going through, I feel a lot more comfortable being able to talk to her about things that I need so I am able to benefit the team.” Truly, Correa’s inspirational role on the team is essential as her impressive blocks and clever responses. At the beginning of each new set, she walks onto the court with a straight spine, radiating a quiet confidence that is nothing short of intimidating for the players on the other side of the net. Correa truly puts a new meaning to being one’s own fiercest advocate and ally. And she continues to show up for herself and have difficult conversations, especially with her parents. “It’s hard to talk to your parents about mental health,” she says, detailing how it is not as much of a priority at home as it is at Linfield. Many challenging discussions took place over the summer, during which Correa dedicated a great deal of time to caring for her sick mother. Due in large part to Correa’s persistence, she felt her parents opening up and becoming more receptive to her needs and feelings. Now she feels she has helped establish a greater sense of trust among her family despite how far apart they are for most of the year. “(My parents) are comforted knowing I’m taken care of and that I’m taking care of myself,” she says. Given how much she struggled in her first semester in college, Correa strives to help ease that transition for her younger teammates, especially the ones who come to Linfield from far way. “Being someone (the underclassmen) can come to,” is one of Correa’s most important roles within the team dynamic. She ensures the freshmen know that her proverbial door is always open. In this way, she is contributing to creating a more unified team where everyone feels at home. Correa’s personal development shows in how she appears on the court. Close friend and teammate from last season Ellie Mead says “Coming back to watch Lexi now just makes me so excited to watch her. She’s going to be so great over the next (three) years.” Indeed, the traits Mead characterizes as Correa’s “personality” and “energy” are sure to continue to shine brightly on Linfield’s court as she furthers a precedent of positivity and taking pride in her playing.

HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK
building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times
H
aley Domeck is in her fourth year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle
blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

HOME OF
BET THE FARM
INDIA PALE ALE & THE WILDCAT BURGER The Linfield University TopCat Club serves as a support organization to the 21 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams and the more than 500 students who participate in athletics each year. Each year, support from the TopCat Club is essential to maintaining and expanding each of these programs. The mission of the TopCat Club is to provide students with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the overall Linfield athletics program. At Linfield, we continually strive to improve programs and facilities so that our teams may compete at the highest level. Roughly 75 percent of the athletic department’s annual operating budget comes from the university’s general fund. The remainder is generated through a wide variety of external sources, including annual gifts to the Linfield TopCat Club.
