HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH

LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure

W

ITH MORE THAN 30 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 143-27 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012, ’13 and ’21). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

A WINNING ATTITUDE A humble leader with a relentless work ethic, Blake Rybar exemplifies the best qualities of a Linfield student-athlete by marissa dolson ’24

B

eing a part of a winning football program has provided Blake Rybar all the motivation he needs to be successful. The Linfield University junior has stepped into a significant role on the Wildcats football team, yet no position or title gets in the way of his dedication to being a team player. Rybar is grateful to be involved in sports in college, contributing in various ways toward two of Linfield’s most successful athletic programs. The Monroe, Washington, native is the football team’s leading tackler through five games and he served as a team manager with Linfield’s dominant softball squad the past two springs. “Something that’s made Linfield memorable is being a part of winning programs,” he says. “Being a part of the football team and manager of the softball team has granted me the opportunity to travel and play against the best teams in the country with a great group of people. Being a part of a championship program allows us to travel to new places and experience new and exciting things.” Despite being the team leader in tackles, Rybar isn’t focused on individual statistics. He works every day to achieve a common goal. He shares his team’s goal of being gritty while executing their plans of winning a national championship. “Going into games, I just have to focus on doing my job and trust my teammates to do theirs. That’s what makes this team special,” Rybar says. “I would not be able to do what I do without my teammates on the field. There is no extra pressure because as a team, I know we will compete and execute to the best of our ability.” Although his role on the team is wide-ranging, he also advocates for his entire team as the football representative on the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee. Through this extracurricular activity, Rybar is able to speak for the football team and advocate their wants and needs as programs. Rybar leads by example, demonstrating to his peers that anything can be accomplished through hard work and dedication. Teammate Justin Pfau says he and Rybar have created a special bond between them. “Blake is an amazing guy with an unparalleled work ethic. Not only is he a beast on the field but he is a great guy off

6

the field. He’s always been respectful and always puts others above himself. Rybar is the type of guy that you can always rely on and I’m very fortunate and blessed to be able to call him a brother.” Rybar is grateful for the endless support from his teammates, friends, coaches, professors, and most importantly, his family. He is supported by his mother, Katie, father, Scott, sister, Megan, and his grandparents. He credits his development as a person to his family members. “I would not be the man I am today without my family. My mom has been my biggest supporter and No. 1 fan. She raised me to be the person I am today and taught me the value of being honest and respectful,” he says. His support doesn’t stop there. Blake’s father has been one of his greatest role models growing up. Scott has inspired Blake to pursue his academic and career goals, while also initiating his son’s love for football. “My father has always been a role model and pushed me to be the best I could be. Growing up he coached me in football and to this day has not missed a single one of my games. My dad has been a firefighter/ paramedic for 23 years. Watching him help people for so many years is a big part of the reason why I am pursuing my career path.” Rybar has always admired his father’s desire to help people, which has now become a priority for Blake as he explores the next chapter in his life. He is one step closer to earning his degree in business management with a minor in communications. Working in sales has always been his passion and he has a good idea of which sales field he plans to enter. “After I heard about biotechnology sales, I immediately knew that I wanted to go into that field. I knew this was the right field for me because I would be selling equipment that will help better people’s lives.” Rybar says. He credits some of his newfound passions to courses he has taken during his time at Linfield. Initially, Rybar wasn’t planning to pursue a minor in communications, but after working with some amazing professors, and developing new interests, he decided a communications minor was right for him and his intended career path. Over the summer months, he strengthened his resume by working as a car salesman at a dealership near his hometown. The experience and skills he developed should serve him well in his future career in biotechnology sales. Blake Rybar continues to show excellence in his studies and on the football field. And as an advocate for his peers, he exemplifies what being a student-athlete at Linfield means.

WYATT SMITH RETURNS TO LINFIELD Former Wildcats All-America quarterback joins the coaching staff after a successful stint in Germany A familiar name on the Linfield campus, in the McMinnville community and in the NCAA Division III football realm, former star Linfield quarterback Wyatt Smith returns to the Wildcats football program as an offensive assistant. The Smith trio is back together, with Wyatt joining his father, head coach Joseph Smith, and younger brother, senior wide receiver Colton Smith, at Maxwell Field for a run at another Northwest Conference title and deep NCAA playoff push. Wyatt returns to Linfield after completing his first season of professional football for the Munich Cowboys of the German Football League (GFL). He was joined on the Cowboys by fellow McMinnville High School and Linfield graduate Tyler Sitton, a standout cornerback for the Wildcats. Smith threw for 2,067 yards and 19 touchdowns in 11 games as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys. He averaged 187.9 yards per game, ranking ninth in the GFL. The Cowboys went 8-1-1 during the 2022 regular season. They finished second in the GFL South to the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns, who went on to win German Bowl XLIII. The Cowboys lost 34-31 to the Cologne Crocodiles in the first round of the GFL playoffs. A two-time NWC Offensive Player of the Year, Smith was named a second team All-American by both Associated Press (AP) and D3football.com as a senior in 2021. He was the runner-up for the

Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the top player in Division III football. During his senior campaign with the Wildcats, Smith completed 71.3 percent of his passes, completing 315 throws for 3,717 yards and 43 touchdowns. He also rushed for 138 yards and six TDs.

NEW TO LINFIELD East Coast transplant Sarah Dalsey joins the staff as head of the Linfield women’s lacrosse program Sarah Dalsey was recently hired to lead the Linfield women’s lacrosse program, becoming the ninth coach in its 26-year history. “I’m super excited to be joining the Linfield Athletics Department,” said Dalsey. “I’m very grateful and thankful to the entire search committee. The committee and I shared a common vision for seeing Linfield ‘get over the hump’ on the way to winning a championship. A big goal at this time is to qualify for the (new fourteam) conference playoffs and hopefully move on from there (to the NCAA tournament).” Most recently, Dalsey worked for one year at NCSA Sports, connecting prospective students and families with collegiate athletic programs that fit their interests and needs. In 2020, she worked at Pro-Fit in West Berlin, New Jersey, managing administrative and financial workflows. Dalsey’s administrative experience also includes internships at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, where she assisted the director of athletics with a variety of essential tasks, and at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, where she served one year in the athletics communications office.

Her resume features three years as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at McDaniel and two years assisting at Adrian College. In addition, Dalsey was head coach of the Nike Girls Lacrosse Camp at McDaniel College and Pace University, and led club travel teams in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. “Coming from the East Coast, I’m looking forward to strengthening the team fundamentally, improving its overall lacrosse IQ, and tightening up the style of play both on the attack and defensive end, which will help create more cohesive play.” Dalsey completed a bachelor’s degree in Sports Studies and Communications/Media Studies at Manhattanville College. She went on to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology from McDaniel while serving as a graduate assistant coach. Dalsey inherits a team that finished with a 12-5 overall record while placing third in the final NWC standings. As many as 13 players are expected to return for the 2023 season, which starts in March.

1992 FOOTBALL REUNION Thirty years ago, a special group of Wildcats led by a first-year coach came close to winning a national championship Members of the 1992 Linfield football team are on campus today for a special 30-year reunion and recognition. Thirty years ago, the Wildcats rolled to a 12-1 record under first-year coach Ed Langsdorf. The only blemish on an otherwise remarkable season came in the NAIA Division II championship game played at Portland’s then-Civic Stadium (now Providence Park). The 1992 football team estab-lished a long list of new team and individual records and came very close to bringing home a fourth national title for Linfield. Past players and coaches from the 1992 football team are invited to enjoy complimentary food and beverage in the VIP area prior to the game. During halftime, the team will be welcomed to the field and acknowledged for their accomplishments. Among those expected to attend are Langsdorf, assistant coach Jay Locey, as well as current Wildcats coach Joseph Smith and broadcast analyst Gary McGarvie, both All-Americans on the ’92 squad. Hall of Fame coach Ad Rutschman, who recruited nearly all of the players from the 1992 team, is also among those invited to participate. Following the game, the team is planning to gather for an informal barbeque and social time at Ty and Robin Angevine’s home in McMinnville. In order that we may get an accurate count for food service, we ask that all attendees please RSVP at https://bit.ly/3y00JrN.

OREGON SPORTS HALL OF FAME Former Linfield football player Terry Durham, who officiated for 24 years in the NBA, earns enshrinement Linfield University graduate Terry Durham, who began officiating basketball while in middle school but is better known for his 24-year career working games in the National Basketball Association, headlined the 2022 class of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame that was inducted Sunday, Oct. 9, at Portland’s Providence Park. A 1968 Linfield graduate, Durham joined coaches Dennis Erickson and Dave Gasser, basketball players Fred Jones and Felicia Ragland, master’s athlete Becky Sisley and hockey standout Connie Madigan in this year’s Oregon Sports Hall of Fame class. While he was a student at McMinnville High School, Durham stood next to his father, head coach Paul Durham, on the Linfield football sidelines and took notes during games. When he entered Linfield and was a member of the Wildcats football team, he again stood on the sidelines, not playing quarterback much as a freshman and sophomore. “Dad always said I had to perform better than the other players that played my position, or he could not play me,” Terry says. “So that was one challenge to deal with. Another was getting respect from the other players, as they really did not trust me being around them. They made me earn it. “Playing for my dad was special. It got to the point in games that we would think alike, both calling the same play.” Durham went on to become a two-time all-Northwest Conference quarterback. He was one of the leaders of the 1965

Linfield team, which won conference and went on to the NAIA national semifinals where the Wildcats knocked off Sul Ross State, 30-27, in Alpine, Texas. He played basketball as a freshman, then participated only in college intramurals until Coach Ted Wilson called. When Wilson kicked players off the 1966-67 Linfield basketball team, Terry became a starting guard. Linfield tied for the conference title, beat Western Oregon in the NAIA district playoffs and went to Kansas City, losing by a point in the opening round to the eventual national champion. After Linfield, he played the 1967 season for the Victoria, British Columbia, team of the Continental Football League and had 1967 and 1968 tryouts with the NFL Chicago Bears. His first coaching experience was in football at Linfield in 1969 under Coach Ad Rutschman, while he earned a master’s of education degree. Later, he coached football at Sunset and Klamath Union high schools, and was a football graduate assistant at Stanford University. He officiated junior high school, Linfield intramurals, high school, small and major college basketball games, then working eight NBA summer camps before being hired fulltime by the association. Durham previously was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and the McMinnville High School Hall of Fame in 2011.

WILDCATS IN THE PROS Recent Linfield graduates Wyatt Smith and Tyler Sitton spent the summer in Munich, Germany, where they led a GFL professional team to its best record in 20 years Taking their talents oversees during the summer months, two former Linfield Wildcats football stars led the Munich Cowboys to their best season in 20 years. Wyatt Smith and Tyler Sitton helped lead Munich to an 8-1-1 record and an appearance in the German Football League playoffs. Despite a furious comeback effort, the Cowboys were eliminated from contention for the German Bowl title, losing by three points. With Smith leading the offense throughout the season, the Cowboys averaged 30.3 points and 322.9 yards per outing. Continuing his torrid statistical efficiency from his Linfield days, Smith completed 73.2 percent of his passes while appearing in all 10 games. He passed for 1,819 yards and 17 touchdowns while surrendering just four interceptions in 235 pass attempts. Sitton, a defensive back, appeared in all 10 games and finished as the Cowboys’ fourth-leading tackler with 44 stops. He also registered an interception and a tackle for loss. Linfield football coach Joseph Smith, Wyatt’s father, took to Twitter to tweet his congratulations to the two Wildcats: “We are sure proud of you two. You went to a foreign country and brought professionalism, work ethic, selflessness, and heart to a program trying to learn how to win. You showed the Cowboys how to win. We could not be more proud. We look forward to your return!” The two McMinnville High School graduates each earned their bachelor’s degrees from Linfield before departing for Europe.
