WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT one piece of the puzzle Cole Hoskins is the glue that keeps the Wildcats baseball team focused on winning a conference championship and returning the program to previous heights by RILEY OMONAKA ’24
C
ole Hoskins chooses to see himself as one piece of the puzzle. Whether in baseball or life, the Hillsboro, Oregon, native is committed to seeing things through and supporting those around him. As an active member of the Linfield University McMinnville campus and a sports management major, he puts untold hours of work into all he does. “I’ve played every position in the infield in my college career: catcher, pitcher, third base, shortstop, second base and first base,” Hoskins says proudly. “This season, my goal is to win the conference and to see Linfield return to being the most dominant team in the conference.” The true definition of a utility player, Hoskins takes immense pride in the love he pours into baseball. There is no ego or hubris for the senior, just passion. Hoskins plays baseball because he enjoys pouring himself into something greater, something that will persist after he has crossed the stage at graduation. “The team’s camaraderie is at an all-time high in the last four years,” he says. “This team is full of different characters that all work to push toward a common goal of a conference championship. We have incredible leadership from our older players and a variety of young guys who are extremely talented and motivated.” Above all else, Hoskins expresses immense gratitude for the opportunities he has been given. “We have a very talented group and great coaching staff to give us the tools for success especially with Richie Sexson a former big league all-star,and Scott Brosius, a World Series MVP and champion,” he says. “We’re very blessed to have such great coaches at our use for this season.” As his teammates can vouch, Hoskins is willing to put in the effort to succeed. As a friend, he’s the first to show up and cheer for his peers. As a player, Hoskins is willing to adapt to any position or situation to help the team prosper. “Cole is one of those guys you would want to go to war with,” says fellow senior Ryan Kamp. “Not only is he a great teammate who knows how to fire up the team, but he is an incredibly hard worker, a great competitor, and you know he will always have your back. In addition to that, Cole is great for our team chemistry. He never fails to make people laugh and he knows how to keep everything loose and fun within the team.” Hoskins celebrates his time on the field. From T-ball to 2

collegiate athlete, Hoskins’ journey is a reminder to all to go forth with kindness and humility. Those who know him are familiar with his jovial nature and genuine passion for life. Fewer, however, understand the difficulties Hoskins has had to overcome to reach where he is today. “When I was 10 years old, I had medical issues which caused both my legs to be in cast for several months. I had to go through extensive rehabilitation to help me learn how to walk and run again. This is one of many experiences that taught me to never give up,” Hoskins says. Indeed, he did persist. The baseball team and Linfield community are fortunate to have such a genuine individual in their midst. Hoskins celebrates his victories and defeats because both are signs that he was here. That he worked and lived and loved with his teammates. “If I could give my past self some advice, I would tell me to enjoy all the highs and lows of baseball because they all come with positive learning lessons to help me beyond baseball and in my life journey,” Hoskins says. Beyond baseball, Hoskins is involved on campus as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Hoskins is dedicated to carrying on the work of his predecessor, Cason Cunningham, by creating a network of student-athletes on campus devoted to something greater than themselves “(FCA has) been one of the most important things I’ve been able to be apart while at Linfield for the last four years. My freshman year I went to FCA because one of the senior pitchers was a leader/president. Cason asked if I would take it over. “We averaged three to four people my freshman year and currently we have an average of 10-15 people, the most I’ve ever seen. It’s been something I’ve prayed for to happen at the right timing of God’s plan: Building faith for our campus and being lights throughout our sports teams.” Under Hoskins tenure as president, the FCA has more than tripled its membership. When he departs in May, Hoskins is sure to leave the FCA, the baseball team, and community at large better than he found it. After he completes his degree in sports management, Hoskins intends to work in professional baseball. He remains open to all opportunities that are presented to him. Each step Hoskins takes on his journey will guide him to where he is meant to be. “My plan is to work in the front office of a professional MiLB or MLB team as an account executive, ballpark operations head, or a data analytics engineer,” Hoskins says. “Along with these, it would be great to do coaching at some point at the high school to collegiate level depending on where God points me on my life plan.”

LINFIELD SPORTS NETWORK
fans can now follow the ’Cats on the roku app The Linfield Sports Network brings fans live action of Linfield baseball each week. Fans can watch live play-by-play action of all home games on their desktop computer, tablet or mobile device or smart TV. The LSN also provides audio-only coverage of away contests. The Farnham Electric Pregame Show starts joe stuart 15 minutes prior to each baseball game’s scheduled start time. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up, with analysis, final statistics and live interviews with players and coaches. McMinnville native Joe Stuart begins his sixth season as the lead baseball play-by-play announcer. A 2020 Linfield graduate, Stuart is the athletic department’s broadcast coordinator, isaac milner managing all aspects of Linfield’s webcasting outreach, while assisting with sports communications and social media needs. Stuart got his start in sports broadcasting with LSN, calling play-by-place for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball contests. He also served as football sideline reporter for two seasons. Current Linfield men’s tennis player Isaac Milner embarks on his first season of involvement with Linfield baseball broadcasts, and will serve as color analyst and occasional play-by-play voice.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS KELLEY continues to reap honors Wildcats pitching star Tayah Kelley rolls up three more wins last week in her her fourth straight NWC weekly recognition Very few Division III pitchers, if any, are having as good of a spring as Linfield ace Tayah Kelley. Kelley was named the Northwest Conference Softball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week for the fourth straight week on Monday after picking up three more wins in the circle last week. The junior from Myrtle Creek, Oregon, tossed three complete games in wins over Willamette and George Fox. She allowed the Bearcats one run on four hits while striking out 10 in a tight 2-1 win on Wednesday. She allowed one earned run on three hits with 11 strikeouts in each of her outings against the Bruins. Kelley has been a wrecking ball in the NWC. She is 13-0 on the season with five shutouts and a save in 87 innings of work. She leads the NWC with a 0.72 ERA and 126 strikeouts. Kelley has held opponents to a .151 batting average and just 13 extra-base hits. Winners of 10 of its last 11 games, Linfield (21-3, 11-1 NWC) sits atop the NWC standings. The Wildcats swept Lewis & Clark on Tuesday prior to today’s non-conference doubleheader against La Verne of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference.

WOMEN’S SPORTS HISTORY SOUGHT Did you participate in women’s sports while at Linfield? Dr. Laura Kenow, professor in Health, Human Performance, and Athletics, is heading efforts to create a more complete historical record of women’s sports at Linfield. Help is needed from those who participated prior to 1990, but all stories are welcome. Please complete this short survey to share your Linfield women’s sport experiences and help build our historical knowledge. Throughout the spring and fall of ’22 there will be a variety of events celebrating Linfield Women’s Athletics as part of the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. NCBWA TOP 25 POLL MARIETTA HOLDS TOP SPOT IN DIVISION III The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA polls with the NCBWA/D3baseball.com Division III Poll. Weekly polls continue through the NCAA Division III Championship. Marietta of the Ohio Athletic Conference is the consensus No. 1 pick in this week’s NCBWA poll. Birmingham-Southern, Eastern Connecticut, Lynchburg and Texas-Dallas round out the top five spots. The D3baseball.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly. Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport. Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates and official votes in the Dick Howser Trophy, Regional Players of the Year and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors the Division I Players of the Week, the Stopper of the Year, and publication and writing contests.
