TED WILSON GYMNASIUM

Ted Wilson Gym bears the name of the man who coached the Linfield basketball team longer and to more wins than any individual in school history. In 20 seasons, Wilson directed the Wildcats in over 500 games, compiling a 324-213 record. Riley Gym was nicknamed the “House of Hustle” out of respect for Wilson’s high-scoring teams, which averaged a school-record 96.5 points a game during the 1977-78 season. Ted Wilson Gym is decorated with 18 Northwest Conference championship banners, 16 of which were won by Wilson between 1961 and 1981. Wilson Gym, with 1,924 seats, is contained within Linfield’s 112,000-squarefoot Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex which opened in 1989.

GAME TIME

The new structure was dramatic a departure from cramped Riley Gym. The state-of-the-art facility contains locker rooms, offices and classrooms, a fully equipped athletic training room along with display areas that house the trophies and recognitions of past Linfield teams and athletes. In 1920, Riley Gym was built adjacent to historic Pioneer Hall at a cost of just over $25,000. Riley Gym served as the basketball home of the Wildcats for 67 seasons. A granddaddy of small college gyms, Riley played host to its first game in December, 1921, and its last game in February, 1989. Linfield’s first on-campus basketball court was located on the north end of campus in the building now known as Newby

Hall. The floor was miniature by today’s standards and there were no boundary lines. The surrounding walls prevented players from leaving the playing area. As a game was about to start, someone would check that all the doors were closed tight, the ball would be tipped off at center court, and it was every player for himself. Up until 1907, Newby Hall, nicknamed the “Chem Shack,” was illuminated by candles with tin reflectors. Many of the gyms the Wildcats played in were smaller and even more primitive than the one on the Linfield campus. Around 1900, Linfield played its home games in the old pavilion in the city park. Following practices and games, players heated their own shower water using a woodburning boiler.

WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

global perspective A law, rights, and justices major, Alexis Heald spends much of her classroom time thinking of ways in which she can impact the world by RILEY OMONAKA ’24

A

lexis Heald, better known as simply “Lex” by her friends, is a shoe connoisseur, Taekwondo master and a future lawyer. As if that list weren’t impressive enough, she’s also a leader on the Linfield women’s basketball team. Those who know Heald know she doesn’t let obstacles slow down her progress. When she runs into problems, Heald steadily chips away at them. Her skill on the court may be impressive, but Heald’s self-discipline truly positions her a bar above her opponents. “All around, Alexis has a lot of heart and gets a lot of hustle points in my book,” says teammate Janessa Yniguez. “You can just tell she wants to get better every day.” “Progress over perfection,” is Heald’s mentality this basketball season. She shows up every day for herself and the team. As a result, the strides made on the court are quite noticeable. Last season, she earned the Linfield women’s basketball award as Most Improved Player. A Portland local, Heald doesn’t rest on her reputation as a hard worker. Each day, she shows up equipped with a positive attitude and the best version of herself. “Admiring how far we have come is necessary in recognizing how much further we need to go,” Heald says. Though Heald’s humility would never let her admit how crucial she is to the team, she has a long list of teammates ready to sing her praises. She tries to focus on the next thing she can improve. “The biggest adjustment I have had to make since entering this program is the commitment to excellence,” Heald says. “This includes being on top of academics, putting in extra work after practice, time management and an overall graciousness to everyone. Representing the program well is an everyday necessity.” Heald’s commitment to getting better and her humble attitude allow her play to do the talking. “What makes Lex unique as a teammate and basketball player is her being a beast in the paint, offensively and defensively, in spite of her height,” Yniguez says. Measuring 5-foot-9, Heald makes for a worthy opponent. Yet, Heald’s quality leadership doesn’t end at the example she sets on the court. It can also be seen in her goofy personality. She loves the team’s tight-knit community and always tries to be a good friend for her teammates. She has quickly become someone squad members can rely on for advice and kindness. 4

GAME TIME

JANUARY 11, 2022

“As a friend, Lex is authentic and dependable. I know I can always go to her when I need something, and she’ll help in any way she can,” says Yniguez. “She is easy to talk to and always has an open door policy.” Empathetic by nature, she always wants to see her friends succeed. However, feeling helpless is the most difficult thing for Heald to overcome. During last season, she struggled with events that were far beyond her control. “I faced issues regarding the health of a family member, the mental health struggles of a close friend, and quarantine, on top of uncertainty surrounding the team’s ability to play,” Heald says. In typical Heald fashion, she chose to appreciate what she gained from her adversity. “However, working through these obstacles and using the team as a support system resulted in an immense level of gratitude for my health and the ability to play basketball for a program I love,” she says. In her junior season, Heald is looking forward to contributing to the program and continuing to grow. She is grateful for her team and the opportunities set before her. “Every player exhibits perseverance, loyalty, and a supportive nature. Additionally, everyone has a great sense of humor, making the time, effort and emotional commitment worth every second,” says Heald. There is more to Heald than meets the eye. Off the court she is a member of the black student union and a bookworm. Says Yniguez: “My first impression of Lex was anything but a basketball player. She is truly a fashionista, but I knew she was a baller when I watched her sporting some (jumpers).” Don’t be fooled, Heald has intellectual brawn, too. On the court, she has a high basketball IQ. And off the court, she’s analyzing complex institutional issues within society and rooting out solutions for discrimination. As a law, rights, and justices major, Heald spends much of her time in the classroom thinking of ways in which to save the world. “The best part of my major is witnessing real world applications of the information I’m learning about, as well as recognizing the impacts of politics and legislation on my life,” Heald says. “Also, this major deepens my awareness as an ally to groups disadvantaged by American institutions.” She refuses to be complacent within a society structured for her and takes an active role learning about others experiences. As a member of the black student union, she allows her opinions to take a back seat and learn about others experiences. One day, Heald hopes to become a lawyer so that she can make the world a little better every day. She’s ready to put in the work for others and hopes to travel. Surely her experiences abroad will only make her understanding of the world all the more well-rounded.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Linfield wrestling program adds national and international star Alyssa Lampe to coaching staff Alyssa Lampe has been hired as assistant wrestling coach at Linfield University. “I’m very excited to have Alyssa joining our program and coaching staff,” said Linfield head coach Chad Hanke. “She has been one of the best wrestlers in the world for a long time and will have an immediate impact on our program.” An accomplished amateur wrestler, Lampe comes to Linfield with an impressive list of credentials. She is a four-time U.S. Open individual champion in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2019, and twice was a bronze medalist in international competition in 2012 and 2013. A member of the U.S. national team for a total of six years, Lampe remains in contention for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team as it prepares for the 2024 Summer Games. In 2013, she was chosen as USAW’s “Women’s Wrestler of the Year” by her peers and coaches and was selected as the U.S. Open’s “Outstanding Wrestler” in 2013 and 2019. Lampe’s coaching experience includes providing technical coaching for the Wisconsin and Wayland Baptist team camps.

“We intend for Linfield to become an NCAA powerhouse on both the men’s and women’s sides,” said Hanke. “Alyssa and I will work hard to make that happen in the years ahead.” With recruiting now in full swing, Linfield expects to compete in its first varsity matches in the fall of 2022. A handful of wrestlers are currently competing as a club in preparation for the coming season.
