WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT better than she found it Helping establish ways for student-athletes to seek support for mental health concerns, Maia Rezoski’s legacy will be more than just what’s she’s accomplished on the field by riley omonaka ’24

M

aia Rezoski does her best to put love into everything she does. The senior midfielder on the women’s lacrosse team may come off as reserved, but she is loyal and compassionate beyond measure.

While Rezoski is already well into her final season of organized lacrosse, she shows no signs of slowing down.

She stands ready to pour all her effort into helping her team succeed. Though her offensive prowess is quite impressive, her greatest asset to the team is the way in which she has helped elevate the players who surround her.

Hailing from Duvall, Washington, about 45 minutes northeast of Seattle, Rezoski is no stranger to adversity. Her lacrosse resume is filled with awards and notable statistics, yet Rezoski has struggled in places no one can see: inside her own head.

“I’ve dealt with several setbacks, especially at the beginning of college, due to mental health and not knowing or having the correct resources to get help,” she says.

She doesn’t shy away from those hard conversations even though it would be easier to pretend they didn’t happen. Rezoski does her best to make sure no one has to struggle as much as she did. She wants to continue to talk about mental health so that every student, athlete and individual can have access to the resources they might need.

“This is one of the reasons why I strive to be so open about my own mental health, and why I try to break the stigma around student-athlete mental wellbeing,” she says.

Rezoski does her best to leave the team and Linfield community at large better than she found it. Those around her recognize this. Her teammates and friends rally around her.

“Maia is the type of teammate that wants to see everyone succeed on and off the field,” fellow senior and teammate Gemmajean Patterson says. “She wants to help them get there, whether it’s passing out advice at practice or advocating for her teammates’ mental health.”

Rezoski is known for being reliable and compassionate – a true leader on and off the field. Playing her final season, Rezoski and her teammates to do what no Linfield women’s lacrosse team has done before: Win a conference championship. Going into the remainder of the season, Rezoski is feeling positive. Though there is work to be done, there is no one else she’d rather be on the field with.

“The season going alright so far. We have some things to improve on for sure, but we have also been doing good in a lot of aspects, too,” she says.

Rezoski’s love for her teammates exceeds the bitterness of defeat and even the sweetness of glory. She will graduate with many fond memories and lifelong friends.

Says Rezoski: “I would say my top two favorite memories from this year so far would be Coach Kibs (Lindsay Kibler) finally telling the team she is pregnant, and the creativity that went into the announcement, and scoring an interception goal versus George Fox with 15 seconds left in the game.”

She plans to continue giving back to her favorite sport even after her graduation this spring. Rezoski has been volunteering with an elite youth club lacrosse team in Portland and intends to continue in that role. Rezoski is currently working on her minor in coaching which she plans to put to good use.

It’s no surprise really, given that her passion for lacrosse runs in the family.

Her lacrosse journey began long before her time at Linfield when she got the chance to try the sport with her sister, Emme. After that, they both were hooked.

“My dad played lacrosse on the East Coast in college and when an opportunity opened for girls lacrosse on the West Coast near my hometown, he asked Emme and I if we wanted to try it,” Rezoski says. “We both agreed to try out for the teams, obviously loved it, and the rest is history! We are now both playing collegiate lacrosse. My sister is a freshman this year at Colorado Mesa University.”

When Rezoski gradiates in May, she will begin a new era. She will be “Coach Rezoski” with a degree in psychology. She’ll blaze a trail for athletes and students to follow. One in which all are valued as an individual above all else.

Perhaps one day she’ll attend graduate school and continue to learn about how the brain functions. Maybe she’ll dedicate her professional years to growing girls and women’s lacrosse.

Whatever she does, Rezoski will definitely pour her love and energy into every moment of it.

THE VISITORS pacific at a glance The Boxers are coming off back-to-back NWC losses to Whitman and Whitworth. Hyland CullenMusengo leads the Pacific attack with 13 goals and a pair of assists. She has put 18 of her 23 shots on goal. Vivian Mai has scored eight goals on 10 shots while Katrina Boyd has scored twice and leads the Boxers with three assists. Amelia Haindl has played every minute in goal, making 34 saves.

THE SERIES Linfield and Pacific have met 30 times with the Boxers winning 19 of those matches. The tides have turned in the all-time series with the ‘Cats taking the last six meetings dating back to the 2018 season. The ‘Cats dominated the Boxers in 2021, winning 17-4 and 13-8 with both victories coming in Forest Grove.

THE RECORDS Linfield enters the week at 0-2 with both losses coming in Northwest Conference play. Pacific is 1-2 overall and also owns a 0-2 NWC mark.

fans can now follow the ’Cats on the roku app The Linfield Sports Network brings fans live action of Linfield lacrosse each week. Fans can watch live play-by-play action of all home matches on their desktop computer, tablet or mobile device or smart TV. The Farnham Electric Pregame Show starts 10 minutes prior to each lacrosse match’s joe stuart scheduled start time. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up, with analysis and final statistics.

McMinnville native Joe Stuart begins his sixth season as the lead play-by-play announcer.

A 2020 Linfield graduate, Stuart is the athletic department’s broadcast coordinator, managing all aspects of Linfield’s webcasting outreach, logan clizer while assisting with sports communications and social media needs.

Stuart got his start in sports broadcasting with LSN, calling play-by-place for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball contests. He also served as football sideline reporter for two seasons.

Current Linfield men’s soccer player Logan Clizer embarks on his first season of involvement with Linfield sports broadcasts, and will serve as play-by-play voice, alternating with Stuart.

For the first time, all Linfield Sports Network broadcasts are available on the Roku app, making it possible for fans to watch live and archived games on their home televisions.

The junior righthander strikes out 37 batters on her way to alltournament honors at the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic Linfield ace Tayah Kelley was named the Northwest Conference Softball Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time in as many weeks on Monday after throwing three complete games and striking out a combined 37 batters at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia.

With Kelley setting the tone in the circle, the Wildcats went 5-1 in the tournament and moved to 11-2 overall (3-0 NWC). She improved to 7-0 on the season with a NWC-leading 0.93 ERA and 62 strikeouts. She also leads the conference with two shutouts.

The junior from Myrtle Creek, Oregon, opened the tournament by striking out a career-high 15 batters in Linfield’s 11-1 win over West Region foe Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, allowing one run on two hits. Her 15 K’s surpassed her previous best mark of 12 and is tied for fourth in program history for strikeouts in a single game.

Kelley claimed another 14 batters via strikeout while again allowing just one run in the Wildcats’ 7-1 win on Saturday over Coe, which was among others receiving votes in the NFCA Preseason Poll. She came back on Sunday and fanned another eight batters in a 9-4 win over No. 8 Salisbury. Kelley was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.

WOMEN’S SPORTS HISTORY SOUGHT Did you participate in women’s sports while at Linfield? Dr. Laura Kenow, professor in Health, Human Performance, and Athletics, is heading efforts to create a more complete historical record of women’s sports at Linfield. Help is needed from those who participated prior to 1990, but all stories are welcome.
