WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

taking the world by storm A soccer fanatic at heart, Linfield senior Dayton Farrow refuses to let injury or the pandemic stand in the way of becoming the best player and person he can be by riley omanaka ’24

D

ayton Farrow, above all else, is a true soccer fan. Farrow eats, sleeps, and breathes soccer. The Linfield University men’s soccer senior follows the scores and stats of his favorite teams and players. His walls are plastered with posters from a variety of teams. Farrow claims Manchester United as his favorite team and Kevin De Bruyne as his favorite player. However, for Farrow, professional soccer is more than a free-time hobby. “The first month of quarantine was really difficult for me, being away from Linfield in terms of sports, education, and my social life,” he says. “But when soccer started up again around the world, it was really motivating.” Hailing from Sparks, Nevada, Farrow has dedicated his time to the game. Teammate Cameron Perron describes him not only as a talented player, but as a fan of “many, many teams.” If you run into him on the Linfield campus, there’s a good chance he’s wearing the jersey of a team in the Premier League. His love for the game is also apparent in the way he plays. Says Perron: “Dayton stays after practice to take extra shots and comes early to get in some extra work.” Farrow’s extraordinary work ethic makes him an excellent leader, too. His natural drive and pure love for soccer is a major motivator for the team. “He doesn’t necessarily tell people what to do, but he takes care of himself and people just naturally follow him,” Perron says. Last fall, Farrow broke his hand and had to wear a plaster cast, but he refused to let the injury get in the way of a phenomenal season. Despite teasing from his teammates, Farrow 4

practiced and played with a padded and wrapped cast, earning him the nickname “Thanos” and the respect of his teammates. He simply would not allow the injury to prevent him from playing 18 matches and making a major impact on the field. Even the obstacles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic could not get in Farrow’s way. His determination to return to the pitch is apparent. “During quarantine, I couldn’t get access to any fields in my area,” he says. “But I did my best to control my fitness.” Despite having to shake off some rust this fall, Farrow has excelled at a new position and tactical system under first-year coach Andrew Duvall. “He can shoot, pass and dribble, but he’s still growing,” Perron says. Farrow’s drive and determination is not just limited to the pitch. He’s committed to his education and community. He is currently pursuing bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and sport management. He’s also a member of Greek life on campus. He continues to strive for personal improvement in all areas of his life. “Dayton knows what he wants. He’s been striving for excellence since we’ve been here,” Perron says. After Linfield, Farrow intends to remain involved in sports. He is considering trying out for Tier II professional teams after graduation. Perron is very supportive of his teammate’s dream of playing professionally, saying Farrow “can definitely (earn a spot on a pro team), he just needs to stay confident.” Yet Farrow is not set on any future plan. “I’m going with the flow right now. I think I want to stay in sports, but I don’t know exactly what that means for me,” he says. Whatever Farrow accomplishes, he is sure to excel at. He is incredibly intelligent on and off the pitch. Devoted to his teammates and community, those who know him won’t be surprised if he takes the world by storm. For now, Farrow is focusing on the spring soccer season. He’s excited to be back on the pitch with his teammates and best friends and is choosing to “avoid the negative as much as possible and focus on the things I love.”

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded plans for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in late December. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. “This project is absolutely critical, not only for the success of our student-athletes in men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse, but it’s equally as important for students who participate in intramurals as well as members of the community,” said Killgore. “Having a second turf field really opens up so much flexibility in scheduling for all our athletic teams.” The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases. In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass

field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field will be draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase 2 could begin as early as 2021. Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, permanent restrooms and a concession stand. Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass

field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player. The upgraded soccer/lacrosse facility serves a variety of uses. In addition to hosting Linfield soccer and lacrosse practices and matches, the new facility provides recreational space for all Linfield students and will serve as a centerpiece for the summertime Olympic Development Program as well as community events. “The whole soccer/lacrosse fundraising campaign really exemplifies what we mean by ‘All In,’” said Killgore. “People who are not necessarily affiliated with soccer or lacrosse stepped up as important contributors to this project. Each of them understood how important this project is and how much it will benefit all Linfield students.” Contributions continue to be sought to complete funding of Phase 1. Once that goal is met, donations for the project’s second phase will begin to be accepted.
