gratitude and goal-setting Drawing inspiration from his family, junior Anson Agapay is focusing on a career of service in the medical field by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27

B

ehind every athlete’s triumph lies powerful weapons: gratitude and goal-setting. Anson Agapay shows how the implementation of these have transformed his entire life journey. Agapay is in his junior year as a member of the men’s soccer team at Linfield University. Yet he recognizes that his story would be untold without his friends and family. “I was born in Henderson, Nevada, but moved to Maui, Hawaii, when I was very young. Although I was born (on the mainland), I will forever call Maui my home,” Agapay says. “My life growing up can be described as a fantasy. I was blessed with amazing people to guide me to who I have become today. Without them, there would be no story. I was given one of the best childhoods you could ever ask for.” Agapay is full of gratitude. His fantasy of a life has only been possible by the people who raised him and guided him along the way. Back in Maui, Agapay is supported by his mother, Vilma, and his father, Robert. His family’s guidance has inspired him to become the best version of himself. “My family is known for their hard work, dedication, and family-first values,” he says. “It’s shaped the way I live my life and achieve the goals I set for myself.” Goals are a big part of Agapay’s life. In nearly every pursuit, he has a goal he is seeking out. His family means everything to him and thanks to inspiration from his family, he lives by a motto he carries along with him every day. “I was told never to give up,” he says, proudly. “If I were ever to give up, I would be one certified loser! If I at least try, I’m a winner in my book. Overall, my parents have been the greatest inspiration in my life because I see them working hard to provide for me.” Growing up watching his parents work hard on his behalf, Agapay is inspired to work hard for others. Now in his third year at Linfield, he is steps closer to accomplishing another goal of becoming a nurse. “A future career goal of mine is to take care of patients and see them be discharged, knowing I made a difference and having a part in that happening,” he says.

Yet, he won’t stop there. “Another goal of mine is to eventually become a nurse practitioner after getting some years as a registered nurse. Lastly, my biggest future career goal is to take my nursing career back home to Maui and take care of my community and ohana (extended family).” While Agapay is looking into his future career goals. Linfield University’s soccer season is well underway. In his fantasy of life, soccer has become another factor that has glorified his life and experiences. From starting his journey at age five, he is extremely grateful for the people he has met and the lessons that he has learned along the way. During his high school career, he was faced with a familiar obstacle. “COVID-19 stopped all sports events and school events and it was an obstacle that set me back in finding enjoyment in those,” Agapay says. “Sports events and school events were fun and when they were canceled, I never gave up on finding that fun again.” Though sports were halted, Agapay enjoys reminiscing on the exciting memories formed early in his soccer journey. “From traveling to different states to compete, receiving knowledge on all things in life, meeting lifelong friends and teammates, experiencing winning tournaments, meeting coaches and mentors, and overall, soccer gave me a passion to carry to my adulthood.” With the season is underway, he is motivated to help turn the Linfield men’s soccer program around. “I would like to help pull this program up from a program that was consistently losing to a program that is talked about, making headlines, and one which teams and spectators respect,” he says. “Moving forward into the rest of the season, my mindset is to be the best version of myself for my team and make sure that they are receiving 110% of my effort.” In the world of sports, where relentless training and competition often take center stage in success, Anson Agapay’s story serves as a reminder that there are hidden forces at play — gratitude and goalsetting. Agapay has embodied the power of these during his remarkable journey. Through his own experiences, he teaches us that acknowledging the unwavering support of friends and family is a beacon for future success. His story is a testament to the fact that behind every athlete’s triumph, gratitude and goal-setting are the unspoken heroes, propelling him to achieve greatness both on and off the field.

THE TOPCAT CLUB

The Linfield University TopCat Club serves as a support organization to the 21 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams and the more than 500 students who participate in athletics each year. Each year, support from the TopCat Club is essential to maintaining and expanding each of these programs. The mission of the TopCat Club is to provide students with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the overall Linfield athletics program. At Linfield, we continually strive to improve programs and facilities so that our teams may compete at the highest level. Roughly 75 percent of the athletic department’s annual operating budget comes from the university’s general fund. The remainder is generated through a wide variety of external sources, including annual gifts to the Linfield TopCat Club. To learn more about giving opportunities, please visit the TopCat Club website at www.linfieldtopcat.com.

milner, jones to handle soccer play-by-play The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield soccer matches in 2022. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts and play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or Smart TV. Live coverage begins 15 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown. Linfield senior Isaac Milner begins his third season as the play-by-play voice of Wildcats men’s and women’s soccer. Milner started his broadcasting experience with the LSN last season covering soccer, providing color commentary on basketball broadcasts, handling occasional play-by-play duties for volleyball, basketball and softball as well as providing crucial production support on football, softball, tennis and swimming webcasts.

Freshman Levi Jones joins the stable of Linfield sports broadcasters this fall. He’ll alternate with Milner behind the microphone on soccer broadcasts. LSN live broadcasts are under the direction of Joe Stuart, the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator. In his third year in the isaac milner position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs. All LSN broadcasts, both live and on demand, can be accessed at golinfieldwildcats.com/watch or in the Linfield Athletics app on mobile, tablet or smart TVs.
