no cost for caring Understanding that it’s not uncommon for athletes to experience depression, Jacob Barnes makes himself available to support others

by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27

J

acob Barnes’s love for wrestling is rooted in how it helped him find a new way to see himself and showed him just how much he is capable of. The Linfield sophomore heavyweight remembers being bullied for his size in his younger years and how he struggled to find a sport he could thrive in. With the encouragement and support of teachers, he discovered a wealth of talent that has since earned him a great deal of recognition. “A lot of my progress and growth as a wrestler has come from being able to trust myself in middle school and be confident in myself,” he says looking back. “I had a lot of teachers in middle school and high school that helped me get to this level. I just feel like I wouldn’t be where I am without a lot of my teachers and coaches.” The appreciation is clearly mutual. Former coach Art Kallai describes Barnes as “someone I could always count on to be a leader and help others.” Barnes is so inspired by those who helped shape him that he plans on becoming a history teacher and wrestling coach at his alma mater, McMinnville High School. “I want to be able to give back in the same way,” he ex-plains. As for his interest in history, it is just as multi-faceted as Barnes himself. “On the one hand, I really want to be a history teacher just because I find history super interesting, but on the other hand, I always kind of think of how my dad would have been a history teacher and how much (my parents) have sacrificed for me and my brothers and sisters,” he says. “I kind of feel like I owe it to them to carry that torch onward.” Barnes’s parents began college at Linfield but had to leave when his older brother was born. Barnes’s gratitude for everything they have done to help him achieve his dreams is clear. Sports, and wrestling in particular, are important to the Barnes family, but so is a prioritization of well-being and mental health. “My mom’s a nurse, so she always kind of drilled it into our heads that if we were ever dealing with (mental health challenges) that it’s better to just talk about it,” Barnes says. Indeed, he remains open about his own struggles with depression and

how he is helping the wrestling team ensure that each member knows they never have to suffer alone. He emphasizes how important it is that all his teammates regard him as someone they can be vulnerable with. “I never really found that there was a cost to caring. It’s just helping shoulder the burden,” he says. “That’s a big part of being an athlete at Linfield. There’s a mutual feeling through all sports that if you’re ever dealing with stuff, you can talk to someone and (they) can help shoulder that.” Barnes brings the same level of commitment to his wrestling. As the full scope of his abilities began to emerge in high school, he created the goal of winning four state titles. With each passing year, however, a series of compli-cations and “choking” at the last minute had left him without this accolade heading into his senior season. By that point, Barnes’s drive had kicked into high-gear and even the time off it took to recover from a chipped tibia could not deter him from securing a championship victory. Although the Oregon State wrestling program had already told Barnes they would welcome him even if he did not wrestle his final season in order to prioritize healing, he had to prove to himself that he was capable. “I had to win a state title, not only for my family, but just for myself to know I could have done that. So just being able to work myself up to that level after all the stuff that had happened was really satisfying for me.” With state title clinched, Barnes enrolled at OSU, but soon realized the school was not the right fit. When he learned that Linfield was starting a wrestling program, he decided to take a leap and transfer. Moving from Division I to a Division III program certainly felt like a risky decision. Barnes remembers the moment he knew it was well worth it: “At our first dual meet last year, Wilson Gym was packed and it was loud and it was fun. Just in that one dual meet, I just realized the worries I had of making a mistake transferring leaving a D-I college and transferring to Linfield were gone. It showed me it was the right decision to come here.” Barnes’s love of Linfield has only grown with time, especially as he sees how much the school values its athletes. “I really like how much sports gets recognition here,” he says, describing how the Linfield community acknowl-edges that while athletes may need to miss class more frequently, it is all for “a commitment to the school, to try and put Linfield on a higher level.” Truly, Barnes’s physical prowess and genuine care for everyone around him are excellent reflections onto the greater Linfield community.
