a servant leader
With unique insight into the reality of physical ailments, Sydney Downing is making a career of helping people by karlie vercauteren ’27
S
ydney Downing’s journey on the volleyball court starts with reckoning with the impact of not being able to be on it. “I feel like (my journey) starts with a lot of injuries,” says the Linfield University junior. And unlike most of the serious injuries commonly associated with sports, Downing’s is invisible. At 16, she sustained a serious concussion and continues to deal with the effects of Post-Concussion Syndrome, a condition that can flare up unexpectedly and causes extreme sensitivity to a variety of stimuli. While Downing herself is not the type to dwell on her struggles, it’s easy to see how experiencing such a lifealtering injury – one that’s nearly impossible for others to understand – can be extremely isolating and discouraging. It’s a testament to the depth of her own grit and dedication that she remains committed to her team and her sport, growing into a mentor and a role model for her teammates. Sidelined by an ocular injury early this season, Downing is “champing at the bit to get back,” but the Wildcats’ co-captain won’t use her tribulations as an excuse to be any less involved with the team. As the players move through drills to prepare for an upcoming match, she yells encouragement from the sidelines, shags balls and helps correct form and technique in a deeply caring and uplifting manner. “Sydney communicates very well with us underclassmen and makes us feel welcome,” says freshman Margaritah Bañuelos. “She talks to us like humans and makes this program a lot better.” Downing’s positive influence within the team dynamic is clear even to an outsider. She attributes her ability to play this role to what she has learned from her family, specifically her grandfather. “My papa, he is my world . . . he’s the rock of our family,” Downing says, her voice full of affection and admiration. A Norwegian fisherman, Downing’s grandfather models a spirit of kindness and humility that she strives to embody, relating her commitment to being “the first one at lifts, the first one at practice” to a mindset of “servant leadership” and “just putting your head down and doing the work.” 4

Her strong connection with her grandfather was reinforced when he suffered a stroke in her seventh-grade year and was hospitalized in an in-patient neurology wing for nine months. Facing this type of situation, it would have been easy for someone as young as Downing to feel helpless, but she took action instead. She attended all his physical therapy sessions and “was the one going home and doing those exercises with him whether he liked it or not.” Being able to see the direct results of those exercises and the care her papa’s team provided “was truly life changing” and helped her realize she wanted to have that same impact and be a physical therapist herself. Downing has remained committed to this goal and set herself up for success in this demanding field and is currently a pre-physical therapy major at Linfield. She worked at Puyallup’s Good Samaritan Hospital in her home state of Washington this past summer, which is where her grandfather received his treatment. While there, she made an enormous impression on the staff with her abilities and passion. This semester, she’s enrolled in Anatomy, Chemistry, plus Foundations of Leadership; that is, two lab courses on top of her already extremely demanding volleyball schedule. This level of rigor and involvement is undeniably “a lot.” But as with everything in her life, Downing takes it in stride, recognizing that her commitment to not simply go “through the motions with classes” will serve her well for the rest of her life. Downing began playing club ball in sixth grade and after a rough first two years, she discovered the Puget Sound Volleyball Academy and realized that this sport is her home. Her coaches and teammates “embraced every identity” and “truly cared about [her] as a person and a player.” These were the people who saw her through some of the most difficult moments following her grandfather’s stroke and helped her find a safe space on the court where she could leave everything else behind and find joy in the game. She wants to continue that legacy by going back to the club to coach after she graduates. Sydney Downing has helped develop a sense of belonging for her Linfield teammates and undoubtedly will continue to help the Wildcats grow not only as players and teammates, but as unique, worthy individuals. She blends what she learns in her classes with hands-on experiences, helping people recover from injuries with a unique insight into the full reality of devastating physical ailments. And she will expand upon her own skillset as a servant leader, developing into the type of role model for others that her papa has been for her.

SEASON OUTLOOK Returning impact players With the graduation of Aylea Dixon, a big void in the setter position now looks to be filled by Claire Johnson. Johnson appeared in 14 matches as a transfer and split time as the setter behind Dixon. In her time on the floor, Johnson totaled 43 assists and chipped in 10 serving aces. Now Johnson has the opportunity to be the facilitator of the Linfield offense. As defensive specialists and liberos are seemingly everywhere at once, Paige Richards lived that definition last season. The returning junior filled the stat sheet with 47 assists, 17 serving aces and 256 total digs on defense ranking among the top 10 of the Northwest Conference. Another standout defensively from last season was sophomore Sydney Downing. In 20 matches, Downing served 14 aces, totaled 80 digs and tallied 1.29 digs per set. The returning duo provides a steady defensive presence for a youthful ‘Cats side.
Influx of youth A familiar face who saw limited game action last season but is looking to take a step up this season is Lexi Correa. Appearing in nine matches last season, she accounted for three kills and 11 blocks and should push for a starting front-row position. Ainsley Medina jumped in five matches a season ago and Anela Madarang-Brandes saw most of her game action as a junior varsity player. Domeck brought in eight new freshmen with most of them bringing in a healthy amount of competition for the returners and champing at the bit to get playing time. “We have a lot of new faces in the gym,” Domeck said. “It has been really fun to get to know each other on and off the court and how we want to compete.” Paige Pa’aluhi from Miliani, Hawaii, is only listed at 5-5 on the roster, but her jumping ability and athleticism make her a contender for a starting middle blocker spot. Margarita Banuelos from Auburn Wash., is in line to chip in as a setter for the ‘Cats this year.

building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times
H
aley Domeck is in her fourth year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle
blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

The Wildcats (4-5, 0-2) fell to Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran in back-to-back Northwest Conference matches, both in straight sets. Now the focus shifts to in-state foes Lewis & Clark (5-5, 0-2 NWC) and Willamette (5-4, 0-2 NWC) with the Wildcats hunting for their first conference win. LINFIELD AT A GLANCE Offensively, the Wildcats rank near the top of the conference in hitting percentage (.188) with Araeya Watanabe leading the team in points, kills and serving aces. Senior Claire Johnson is third in the NWC in assists per set averaging 8.78. Defensively, the duo of Nora Myre and Paige Richards have helped Linfield rank second-best in the NWC in opponent-hitting percentage posting only .143. Richards ranks inside the conference top10 of digs per set with 3.55. LEWIS & CLARK AT A GLANCE The Pioneers have struggled offensively posting a conferencelow hitting percentage of .139 and kills per set with 10.03. Izzy Willis leads the attack with 3.81 kills per set and 118 kills on the season. Katie Shimaura, Ruby Kuerschner and Willis all rank among the top of the conference in serving aces per set. nelson, kice to call volleyball play-by-play The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield volleyball matches in 2023. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts with play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or smart TV. Live coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown. Linfield senior Connor Nelson and sophomore Brian Kice will alternate handling play-by-play responsibilities on Linfield volleyball broadcasts. The production team also plays a large role in the success of every LSN broadcast. For volleyball contests, sophomore Eric Albios serves as director, switching cameras, managing
commercial breaks and maintaining the onscreen scoreboard. Camera operators Jackson Koons, Nick Adler and Tyler Marr will take turns behind the camera lens. LSN live broadcasts are under the direction of the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator, Joe Stuart. In his third year in the position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs. LINFIELD IN THE NEWS The University continues to climb in Forbes Magazine’s list of America’s Top Colleges Forbes Magazine listed Linfield University among “America’s Top Colleges” and one of the top 100 liberal arts universities in the nation. The annual Forbes list spotlights the top 500 colleges and universities in the United States based on graduation rates, graduate salaries and outcomes for low-income students, among other factors. In the publication’s 2023 list, Linfield was ranked No. 333 overall, moving up from No. 389 in 2022. In addition to the overall ranking, Linfield shone in the publication’s other categories as well. Forbes listed Linfield as a Top 100 college in the U.S. in two categories: “Liberal Arts Universities” (89) and “In the West” (86). Linfield also rose to No. 176 this year in the national private college ranking, up from No. 206 in 2022. The full rankings and methodology is available on the Forbes at forbes.com/topcolleges. The latest recognition from Forbes comes shortly after Linfield was recognized by other third-party college ranking systems. Recently, Washington Monthly ranked Linfield No. 9 nationally for earning performance and the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon. In addition, College Raptor included Linfield on its 2024 Hidden Gem rankings, recognizing Linfield’s commitment to retention, graduation and studentto-faculty ratio. Four remarkable athletes, one successful coach and a national championship-winning team comprise the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023 On Saturday, November 11, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame will enshrine former women’s tennis coach Amy Dames Smith, All-America softball player Emilee (Lepp) Gisler, football star Paul Dombroski, basketball/football standout O.J. Gulley, national champion pole vaulter Catherine (Street) Bridge, and Linfield’s 2011 national championship softball team. The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet starts at 6 p.m. inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium following that afternoon’s football game versus Whitworth. Tickets for adults are priced at $30. LINFIELD4MAUI Linfield men’s and women’s soccer teams join forces Sept. 24 in support of students affected by wildfires in Hawaii The Linfield men’s and women’s soccer teams are hosting a “Linfield4Maui” (Pink) game on Sunday, September 24, in support of the Linfield students who were affected by the fires as well as our Maui communities. Together with the soccer student-athletes, supporters and Linfield students are encouraged to wear pink to the matches. Each year, support from the TopCat Club is essential to maintaining and expanding each of these programs. The mission of the TopCat Club is to provide students with an outstanding athletic and academic experience and to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the overall Linfield athletics program. At Linfield, we continually strive to improve programs and facilities so that our teams may compete at the highest level. Roughly 75 percent of the athletic department’s annual operating budget comes from the university’s general fund. The remainder is generated through a wide variety of external sources, including annual gifts to the Linfield TopCat Club.
