WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT
mental health advocate Psychology major Jasmine Williams believes athlete mental health is not talked about nearly enough and wants to help address the void
by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27
W
hen Jasmine Williams is passionate about something, she commits to it with her entire being. The senior from Auburn, Washington, brings that same resolve to Linfield University’s soccer fields. Though Williams has been playing soccer since the second grade, she did not truly fall in love with the sport until her first year of high school. In a fortuitous turn of events, she watched a Seattle Sounders match, which brought to light just how “fun” and “awesome” soccer truly is. Afterwards, she was approached by coach Robyn Saarenas, who was looking for players for her club team. While Williams would not realize it until much later, Saarenas “quite literally changed my life that day.” Part of Williams’s previous aversion to joining a club team had stemmed from hearing “mixed things” about them, what with overcompetitive players and parents being too heavily involved. Luckily, Williams “really didn’t feel that on this team,” which she attributes to Saarenas’s calm and patient coaching style. Saarenas “really cared about us as people,” and was able to masterfully navigate a balance between pushing the team physically while providing a safe space mentally. Williams notes what a “fragile” time the early teen years are for so many and exudes gratitude to her coach for never failing to put her players’ well-being above everything else. For her part, Saarenas has nothing but praise for Williams, detailing how she is “an incredibly hard worker” who “never takes shortcuts” and “always put in the work.” The love and gratitude in her voice when she speaks about her coach are reflected in Saarenas’s words, who believes that Williams’s “laser focus and pride in her ability…define her character even more than her talent.” This incredible bond inspired Williams to aspire to coach soccer herself. At Linfield, she is minoring in coaching and gaining a greater appreciation for “how impactful coaches can be.” Williams’s leadership abilities at Linfield and her commitment to always helping her teammates are indicative of what a great coach she will make. In her typical selfless manner, she describes how she tries to compensate for people when they are at a low point, saying there are times when “you (might) need

to carry 90% of their effort and they can only give 10%.” The mindset is admirable to say the least and is clearly implemented based on how highly her teammates speak of her. During their four seasons together at Linfield, teammate and close friend Abbie Bach has “seen Jasmine grow into an amazing player and person and overall an amazing leader.” Bach also notes that Williams is “never content on good enough” and is constantly raising the bar of expectations for herself.” Williams’s commitment to personal growth is best showcased in her re-action to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during her senior year of high school. She practiced soccer in her driveway all spring and summer 2020 and was well-prepared to join Linfield’s team, despite the course of the season being so uncertain. Admittedly, that first season was “super weird,” considering the added complications of the new soccer field being built and sometimes having to play indoors because of wildfire smoke. Still, Williams’s optimistic nature prevailed and even through rainy practices in muddy grass where the team was being “waterboarded” through their masks, she “knew that it would be fine.” With yet another example of her uniquely hopeful outlook comes the question of how Williams has built such a positive mindset. The answer? At least in part, it’s been the classes she takes as part of her psychology major. Those courses “have been awesome” and have taught Williams a lot about working with people. The discipline required in psychology is quite different from what she has encountered in sports and coaching classes, noting that it was “a little bit of a struggle trying to connect my interests.” Now, however, she seems settled on eventually attending graduate school for sports psychology. Williams believes there remains a lack of proper mental health resources available to college athletes not playing at the Division I level. She wants to be part of addressing that issue. She knows athlete mental health is not talked about nearly enough and personal struggles such as confidence issues and mental blocks must be addressed. While her professional career may still be a ways away, Williams lives her values through her role on the field by “being there for my teammates,” in hopes that they never have to struggle alone. This type of care is certain to leave a lasting impact on Linfield’s women’s soccer program. It seems fitting after all, considering how Williams’s life continues to be shaped by soccer. No matter the number of games and practices she attends as a player or a coach, she will always come back to soccer as a “fun sport” that allows her to “push myself physically” and “connect with” those around her.

double-digit wins, including a 21-1-1 mark in 2000. Simmons spent nine years as head coach of the Oregon State men’s soccer program where he won 63 games in his first seven seasons, including a Pac-10 runner-up finish in 2009. Prior to Oregon State, Simmons compiled a 59-47-3 record in six seasons as head coach at Northern Illinois. He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Concordia University-Portland, in 1990 before heading to Gonzaga University in 1994 as an assistant coach. milner, jones to handle soccer play-by-play The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield soccer matches in 2022. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts and play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or Smart TV. Live coverage begins 15 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown. Linfield senior Isaac Milner begins his third season as the play-by-play voice of Wildcats men’s and women’s soccer. Milner started his broadcasting experience with the LSN last season covering soccer, providing color commentary on basketball broadcasts, handling occasional play-by-play duties for volleyball, basketball and softball as well as providing crucial production support on football, softball, tennis and swimming webcasts.
Freshman Levi Jones joins the stable of Linfield sports broadcasters this fall. He’ll alternate with Milner behind the microphone on soccer broadcasts. LSN live broadcasts are under the direction of Joe Stuart, the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator. In his third year in the isaac milner position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs. All LSN broadcasts, both live and on demand, can be accessed at golinfieldwildcats.com/watch or in the Linfield Athletics app on mobile, tablet or smart TVs.
