STAYING SAFE DURING COVID Wearing of masks is required by all visitors, vendors and participants during all home athletic events Linfield Director of Athletics Dr. Garry Killgore announced on August 20 new safety protocols that have been implemented to protect participants and spectators from further spread of the COVID-19 virus. These protocols will remain in effect until further notice. •All individuals (age 12 and over) entering any athletics venue must provide proof of vaccination along with photo identification. •Since all Linfield faculty, staff, and students have completed this task in order to be on campus this fall, the Linfield individual must simply show their current Linfield ID. •Masks must be worn by all spectators at all times. Participants, including players, coaches, support staff and media on the sidelines, must wear masks throughout the duration of all athletic events, both indoor and outdoor, and during pregame and postgame activities.

HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH
LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure
W
ITH MORE THAN 25 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 135-26 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012 and ’13). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

Linfield upset second-ranked Pacific Lutheran. He finished his career with 16 interceptions, third-most in program history, and 168 tackles. Smith was a senior on Linfield’s 1992 team that went 12-1 with its only blemish coming in a 26-13 loss to Findlay (Ohio) in the NAIA Division II national championship game. As a player, he helped the Wildcats capture consecutive Columbia Football Association-Mt. Hood League championships in 1991 and 1992. Smith graduated from Linfield with honors in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior, he earned distinction as Linfield’s 1992-93 male athlete of the year. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sports psychology from Oregon State in 1996. Smith and his wife, Darla, have three children. Daughter Josie is a recent graduate of Carroll College. Eldest son Wyatt is a senior at Linfield while younger son Colton is a junior at Linfield.

expecting to win From changing the position he plays on the field to the mindset he brings to the locker room, the Linfield football program has been transformational for long snapper Zach Jenkins

e sets the standard for what it means to be a team player in the Linfield University football program. In all that Zach Jenkins does, he looks to support his teammates. The fifth-year long snapper’s time at Linfield may be winding down, but his love for the game has never been greater. “The team is a family,” says Jenkins, a native of Maple Valley, Washington. “It sounds cliché, but I think it’s because a lot of the guys who I came in with as freshmen are still here (playing football).” Despite playing an extremely isolated position on special teams, Jenkins has worked hard to build lasting relationships off the field. “At other schools, specialists usually don’t get along with or hang out with the team outside of football, but Zach and I have tried to change that,” kicker Colton Ramos says. “His energy every day is always outgoing, fun and energetic.” Jenkins’ love for football began at a young age. His family has been going to games for as long as Jenkins can remember. He grew up in the stands of the Washington Huskies football stadium. It seemed inevitable that he would end up at the Catdome. Both of Jenkins’ parents are graduates of Linfield and his dad, Mike, also played football at Linfield. The family has been attending Linfield home games since Zach was a toddler. He was destined to be a Wildcat. Says Jenkins: “I’ve been obsessed with football for as long as I can remember. My first word was ‘ball.’” While purple and cardinal are Jenkins’ favorite team colors, he never expected to be a long snapper. His journey to playing college football was filled with honest reflection and disappointment. Jenkins always dreamed of playing quarterback, but when it came time to work on college recruitment, Jenkins decided to invest himself in long snapping. “The biggest adversity I’ve had to overcome was realizing that I wasn’t gifted enough to play college football as a quarterback,” he says “In high school, it ended up not working out as a QB. I kind of had to look in the mirror and decide how badly I really wanted to play football.”

Jenkins has found success and fulfillment in his new role. He has seen himself grow as a player and a leader. Learning to make contributions where he was best able required him to give up on his childhood dream. Jenkins dove head first into his longsnapping education and was lucky to have an amazing mentor to guide his growth process. “I realized I was good at (long snapping) and I ended up going to Rubio Long Snapping Camps and progressively got better and better. I would not be where I am today on or off the field without Chris Rubio,” Jenkins says. “While it was heartbreaking at the time to realize that I couldn’t carry out that childhood dream, I wouldn’t trade it for where I am today.” He’s come such a long way, evolving from the kid at Tahoma High School who just loved the game into a man who is loved by his teammates. Jenkins’ mental growth reveals itself most clearly during long practices and tough games. He’s a positive role model who always tries to pick his teammates up. “Zach is a good guy, teammate and friend,” says Ramos. “He’s helped me keep my head up throughout the years and has helped make practices enjoyable.” While it is easy to admire Jenkins for his dedication and passion for football, his personal growth is by far the most awe-inspiring thing about him. During his adjustment from high school to college football, Jenkins felt himself bend under the weight of higher expectations. Yet he refused to let his new environment break him. He was instead reborn: stronger, faster, and smarter. “I had to buy into the team, the culture, the family, the work. All of it. My high school football team wasn’t always the best, so coming to Linfield was a big shock. Expecting to win every game instead of kind of just hoping. It was really a complete shift in my mentality towards football,” Jenkins says. Nothing is getting in his way of the team’s success this season. Jenkins is hungry to be the best and to succeed alongside his teammates. His goals are nothing short of a national title. To future generations of Linfield Wildcats, Jenkins offers one piece of advice: “Don’t focus on any of the outside noise and distractions. Just focus on doing your job, doing it to the best of your ability and finding something every day to get a little better at.” After he graduates, Jenkins will be sorely missed. His fingerprints can be found on every part of the program. Once his playing career is over, Jenkins will walk away from Linfield with a degree in marketing and memories to last a lifetime. Perhaps in a decade or so the cycle will repeat itself and the next generation of Jenkins will play Linfield football. Either way, Jenkins’ commitment to the team cannot be forgotten or replaced.
LEWIS & CLARK GAME NOTES THE SERIES BETWEEN LINFIELD AND LEWIS & CLARK dates back to 1901, with Linfield now holding a 65-19-1 advantage after 2019’s 54-7 win in McMinnville. This will be the 86th game in the Wildcats’ second-most-played series. The only team Linfield has played more is Willamette (93 meetings through 2021 in a series dating back to 1902) … The Wildcats have won the last 42 games in the series, a skein that began in 1974. Lewis & Clark’s last win in the series was in 1973 by a 7-4 score in Portland. L&C’s longest win streak in the series was 4 games from 1948-51, and its longest unbeaten streak in the series was five games from 1947-51 … Linfield’s widest margin of victory in the series was 77 points, an 84-7 win in 2013 in McMinnville that is the highest score ever recorded by the ‘Cats; Linfield’s 73-0 win in 2015 was the widest margin ever for the Wildcats in Portland. Of Linfield’s 10 widest margins of victory ever, three have come against Lewis & Clark. Lewis & Clark’s widest margin of victory was 44 points, a 44-0 win in 1956 in McMinnville; the Pioneers’ widest margin of victory in Portland was 40 points, a 47-7 win in 1955 … Linfield is 37-6 against Lewis & Clark in games played in McMinnville. The 1927 game was part of a one-of-a-kind event in Linfield football history: a doubleheader. The Wildcats beat the Oregon City Independents in a morning game in McMinnville, then hopped the train to Albany and lost 13-6 to Albany College in an afternoon game. LINFIELD HAS CLINCHED AT LEAST A SHARE of the 2021 Northwest Conference championship, the Wildcats’ second straight NWC title. Linfield has now won 37 NWC crowns, including 29 outright, with a chance to make that 30 with a win over L&C today … Linfield returned to the top of the NWC standings in 2019, the most recent season of NWC football. Prior to finishing second in 2018, the Wildcats had won or shared the NWC title nine straight years from

Linfield 54, lewis & clark 7 Wyatt Smith passed for 399 yards and six touchdowns and No. 24 Linfield rolled up 566 yards of offense at Maxwell Field. Linfield scored TDs on its first three possessions to take control of the game less than nine minutes in and led 34-0 by halftime. Lewis & Clark outscored the Wildcats 7-0 in the third quarter before Linfield tacked on three more touchdowns in the final period. The Wildcats finished with 417 yards passing, with Keegan Weiss grabbing six passes for 103 yards and two TDs and Keaton Wood catching five for 62 yards and a score. Linfield limited Lewis & Clark to 184 yards total offense as roverback Kyell Davis led the Wildcats with 10 tackles. For the Pioneers, Caden Voges completed 13 of 26 passes for 99 yards. Xavier Tharpe had seven catches for 40 yards while Zo Faraj-Washington rushed 11 times for 35 yards. 2009-17; that’s the longest such streak in NWC history … Linfield also won six division titles, including five outright, while the NWC schools were folded into the Columbia Football Association from 1985-95. LINFIELD HAS CLINCHED THE NWC’S AUTOMATIC BERTH in the NCAA Division III playoffs; this will be the Wildcats’ 31st national playoff appearance; that includes a school-record string of 9 straight from 2009-2017 … Linfield has won four national titles: 1982, 1984, 1986 (all NAIA Division II) and 2004 (NCAA Division III). Holding the collegiate record for consecutive winning seasons for all levels of NCAA and NAIA, the Wildcats stand alone as the most consistently successful college football program in the nation. All
but one member of the Linfield coaching staff, including head coach Joseph Smith, weren’t yet born in 1956 when “The Streak” began. That year, Linfield went unbeaten over its final six games, ending the run of back-to-back losing seasons of 1954 and ’55.

recap | last week’s games LINFIELD 77, WILLAMETTE 7 Wyatt Smith passed for 310 yards and seven touchdowns, tying for secondmost in a game ever for the Wildcats. Colton Smith had 124 receiving yards and three touchdowns on eight catches for the Wildcats, while Joel Valadez had 114 yards and three scores on seven grabs. Connor Morton rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on four car-ries for Linfield, which finished with 625 yards of total offense. GEORGE FOX 40, LEWIS & CLARK 9 Ethan Kassebaum rushed for 100 yards on just 11 carries and added 74 more yards on six receptions. Backfield mate Josiah Schmidt added two more rushing touchdowns and the kick return score, accounting for 140 total yards. One week after being harried for seven sacks by Linfield, QB Haiden Schaan threw for for 235 yards with no interceptions.
PACIFIC 14, WHITWORTH 7 Pacific’s defense recorded 10 tacklesfor-loss, a season high, while pressuring the quarterback all afternoon with four sacks in the contest. Michael Timmerman led the way with 10 total tackles and two tackles-for-loss. Sancho Eskridge and Chase Hofmann racked up seven tackles apiece. Joshua Harris was the bright spot for a struggling offense, rushing for 101 yards and two TDs. PACIFIC LUTHERAN 33, PUGET SOUND 0 PLU’s defense had seven sacks and one interception, while posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 1991 NAIA playoffs. Kalen Davis-White registered a team-high eight tackles, including 2.5 sacks and one breakup. The Lutes racked up eight TFLs for negative 54 yards and held UPS to just 148 total yards, including an eyepopping -57 yards on the ground.

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Tonight Linfield inducts eight remarkable Wildcats whose legacies will live on in the Athletics Hall of Fame

Tonight, seven former athletes and one longtime staff member will be inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame class of 2021 includes: •All-America football lineman Daryl Agpalsa ’03, the centerpiece of an offensive line that produced one of the most prolific rushing attacks in program history. Agpalsa was an assistant coach on Linfield’s 2004 NCAA championship team and went on to win two more national titles as offensive line coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. •Joni Claypool ’06, a three-time NCAA national track and field meet competitor and current Linfield record holder in the women’s discus. Claypool won two NWC crowns in the shot put and was chosen as Linfield’s most outstanding field events competitor three times. •Rose Hollingsworth ’09, a three-time NWC swimming champion and two-time NCAA All-American. Hollingsworth set school

records in three backstroke events and was the national runner-up in the 100 backstroke at the 2009 NCAA Championships. She also competed in track and field where she ranks 10th all time in the women’s javelin. •Track and field All-Americans Jeremy Lovell ’10 and Josh Lovell ’10. The Lovell twins were dominant during their four seasons in McMinnville. Josh Lovell won the 2009 men’s decathlon, narrowly edging Jeremy Lovell for the national title. Josh owns six marks that rank among Linfield’s top 10 while Jeremy recorded five top-10 results. •Middle-distance runner Mike Miller ’96, who placed as high as third at the NAIA Indoor Championships in the 1,000-meter run and earned NAIA All-America recognition in the 1,500 as well. A transfer from Clark College, Miller set Linfield and NWC records in the 1,500 while sparking Linfield to the 1995 and 1996 NWC team titles. He also led the cross country program to its most recent men’s

championship in 1994. •Three-sport dynamo Casey (Stepan) Hyland ’08, who earned all-conference accolades in women’s basketball, cross country and track & field. Hyland was a tireless point guard on the basketball floor, appearing in 99 career games. On the track, she starred in the middle-distance events, ranking third all time in the steeplechase, fourth in the 1,500, and eighth in the 800. In cross country, Hyland finished 12th at the 2007 NWC Championships. •Tara Lepp, who served on the athletic department staff as head athletic trainer while pioneering the Linfield athletic training education program. Lepp supervised as many as 200 student trainers during her stellar 36-year career, which includes induction into the Oregon Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame and a Most Distinguished Trainer Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS New men’s and women’s coach Chad Hanke is embracing his new role of leading the rebirth of wrestling at Linfield Chad Hanke has been hired to lead the relaunch of collegiate wrestling at Linfield University. Director of Athletics Dr. Garry Killgore announced the hiring of Hanke as new men’s and women’s wrestling coach on November 3. Linfield recently unveiled plans on to revive its dormant men’s wrestling program while also adding a new women’s wrestling program. Hanke brings seven years of coaching experience as well as an accomplished amateur wrestling career at Oregon State University and nearby Dayton High School.
The men’s wrestling program is expected to compete against regional colleges and universities such as Pacific (Ore.), Corban, Southern Oregon, Eastern Oregon, Warner Pacific, Simon Fraser and Simpson (Calif.). In addition to the above-mentioned schools, the women’s program will likely see action at the Oregon Classic at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds each January. A handful of current student-athletes are competing in wrestling currently as a university club. Linfield will begin competing on the intercollegiate level beginning in the fall of 2022.
