TED WILSON GYMNASIUM

Ted Wilson Gym bears the name of the man who coached the Linfield basketball team longer and to more wins than any individual in school history. In 20 seasons, Wilson directed the Wildcats in over 500 games, compiling a 324-213 record. Riley Gym was nicknamed the “House of Hustle” out of respect for Wilson’s high-scoring teams, which averaged a school-record 96.5 points a game during the 1977-78 season. Ted Wilson Gym is decorated with 18 Northwest Conference championship banners, 16 of which were won by Wilson between 1961 and 1981. Wilson Gym, with 1,924 seats, is contained within Linfield’s 112,000-squarefoot Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex which opened in 1989.

The new structure was dramatic a departure from cramped Riley Gym. The state-of-the-art facility contains locker rooms, offices and classrooms, a fully equipped athletic training room along with display areas that house the trophies and recognitions of past Linfield teams and athletes. In 1920, Riley Gym was built adjacent to historic Pioneer Hall at a cost of just over $25,000. Riley Gym served as the basketball home of the Wildcats for 67 seasons. A granddaddy of small college gyms, Riley played host to its first game in December, 1921, and its last game in February, 1989. Linfield’s first on-campus basketball court was located on the north end of campus in the building now known as Newby

Hall. The floor was miniature by today’s standards and there were no boundary lines. The surrounding walls prevented players from leaving the playing area. As a game was about to start, someone would check that all the doors were closed tight, the ball would be tipped off at center court, and it was every player for himself. Up until 1907, Newby Hall, nicknamed the “Chem Shack,” was illuminated by candles with tin reflectors. Many of the gyms the Wildcats played in were smaller and even more primitive than the one on the Linfield campus. Around 1900, Linfield played its home games in the old pavilion in the city park. Following practices and games, players heated their own shower water using a woodburning boiler.

Fans can watch live play-by-play action of all home games on their desktop computer, tablet or mobile device or smart TV. The LSN also provides audio-only coverage of away contests. The Farnham Electric Pregame Show starts joe stuart 15 minutes prior to each basketball game’s scheduled kickoff. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up, with analysis, final statistics and live interviews with players and coaches. McMinnville native Joe Stuart begins his third season as the lead basketball play-by-play announcer. A 2020 Linfield graduate, Stuart is the athletic department’s broadcast coordinator, isaac milner managing all aspects of Linfield’s webcasting outreach, while assisting with sports communications and social media needs. Stuart got his start in sports broadcasting with LSN, calling play-by-place for men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, baseball and softball contests. He also served as football sideline reporter for two seasons. Current Linfield men’s tennis player Isaac Milner embarks on his first season of involvement with Linfield basketball broadcasts, and will serve as color analyst and occasional play-by-play voice.

23 peyton bergevin THE RECORDS Linfield enters the week with a 0-7 overall record while Lewis & Clark enters at 3-4 as Northwest Conference play opens. The Wildcats were picked eighth in the NWC Preseason Coaches Poll while the Pioneers rounded out the poll in ninth. LINFIELD AT A GLANCE The Wildcats own a 39.9 field goal percentage and are averaging 62.1 points per game. The team’s top three leading scorers are all freshmen, led by forward Gillyan Landis, who is averaging 13.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Forward Elyse Waldal posts marks of 10.3 points and five rebounds per game while guard Emma Schmerbach is putting up eight points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Schmerbach leads the team with 16 assists, 11 steals and seven blocks. Alexis Heald is second on the team with a 53.8 field goal percentage. LEWIS & CLARK AT A GLANCE The Pioneers are averaging 64 points per game and are shooting 37.2 percent from the field. Four players are averaging double digits. Senior Delsie Johnson leads the way, averaging a doubledouble of 14.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She has connected on 51.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. Sophomore Eva Richards is averaging 10.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Fellow sophomore Charlotte Carroll is averaging 10.1 points while senior Peyton Romo is also averaging 10 points per game. THE SERIES Linfield and Lewis & Clark have met 75 times. The Wildcats lead the series with a 41-34 record. The ‘Cats are 38-34 against the Pios in NWC play and 19-17 at home. The two teams split their season series in 2019-20 with the ‘Cats winning 82-73 in McMinnville and the Pios winning 79-71 in Portland.

THE RECORDS Linfield opens Northwest Conference play with a 2-2 overall record after winning one of three games on its California road trip. Lewis & Clark enters the week at 3-2 overall. The Wildcats are picked to win the NWC title while the Pioneers are tabbed fifth. LINFIELD AT A GLANCE The Wildcats are averaging 86.5 points per game and have three players averag-ing double figures. Senior guard Dempsey Roggenbuck, a preseason All-American, is off to a hot start, scoring 20.5 points per game and shooting 46.4 percent from the field. Fellow senior guard Max Lommen is averaging 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game to go with 11 assists and 10 steals. Senior forward Aaron Baune is scoring 11.5 points per game while freshman Trey Bryant is settling in at point guard, averaging 8.5 points and a team-leading 5.8 rebounds per game. Bryant also leads the ‘Cats with 18 assists. LEWIS & CLARK AT A GLANCE The Pioneers are shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from three-point range, averaging 88 points per game. Junior Brenden Patrick leads the team offensively with 18.2 points per game on 62.3 percent shooting from the field, 42.9 percent from outside and 81.8 percent from the free throw line. Senior Jalen Lowery is averaging 11 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while jun-ior Jack Henderson is contributing 10 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. THE SERIES Linfield and Lewis & Clark have met 109 times. The Pioneers lead the series with a 60-49 record. The Wildcats are 45-55 against the Pioneers in NWC play and 26-26 at home. The ’Cats won seven of the last eight meetings. They swept the season series in 2019-20, winning 70-57 in McMinnville and 95-66 in Portland.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Quarterback Wyatt Smith is among 15 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy, honoring the top football player in Division III Wyatt Smith, Linfield University’s do-everything quarterback, has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy, honoring the top football player in NCAA Division III. Presented annually since 1993, the Gagliardi recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service. The award is named after John Gagliardi, Saint John’s legendary Hall of Fame wyatt smith head football coach who passed away at the age of 91 in 2018. John retired in 2012 with 489 career victories, the most in college football history. This fall, Smith has enjoyed a record-breaking season while leading the Wildcats to an unbeaten 11-0 mark that includes the Northwest Con-ference championship and a spot in Saturday’s quarterfinal round of the Division III playoffs. This fall, Smith has amassed seven 300-yard passing games and threw for four or more touchdown six times. He was honored as the NWC Offensive Player of the Week four times this fall.

In four years as Linfield’s starting quarterback, Smith has a 29-4 overall record. This year, Smith established new Linfield career records for pass completions, total offense and passing yards. Away from the field, Smith is an exemplary student-athlete. Sporting a 3.64 grade point average, Smith was named to the Academic All-America Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2019. He was also a CoSIDA Academic allDistrict 8 section in baseball. In service to his community, Smith volunteers weekly at Memorial Elemen-tary School, reading with students and working with the youngsters on projects. It is the same elementary school he attended. On the Linfield campus, Smith was elected scholastic chairman by his peers in the Theta Chi Fraternity where he monitors each member’s academic standing and offers support by implementing study hall requirements, tutoring and other intervention programs. The Gagliardi Trophy finalists will be announced during a live show on Thursday, Dec. 9, on www.D3football.com.
