WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT MAGNET PROGRAM Wine Studies drew Sofia Zielinski to Linfield where she landed a roster spot on the Wildcats volleyball team by avi mehta

T

he Oregon wine industry is well-known throughout the world. Linfield offers one of the best wine studies programs in the region and that key feature is what sold volleyball player Sofia Zielinski on attending Linfield University. “I chose Linfield entirely for the wine program,” Zielinski says. “It was also appealing to play volleyball here, but it was primarily for the wine program.” Zielinski grew up on a farm near Salem, Oregon. She is eager to enter the wine industry, whether that’s continuing the family tradition of farming or showcasing her artistic skills. “I want to either go into the wine-making aspect or the viticulture, because I come from farmers on both sides of my family. I want to stick more towards the wine-making side, but I also want to pursue art and have a winery with an art gallery in it,” says Zielinski. Her family farm grows apples, pears, peaches and hazelnuts and she loved playing around the fields and eating locally grown foods thanks to a farmer’s market in the area. A graduate of McNary High School, Zielinski wanted to attend college outside of Salem, but not so far away that she couldn’t go back home whenever she wanted and access her sizable clothes collection at home. “I looked at some wine programs in California. I wanted to get away from home but still close enough to where I’m still within driving distance,” she says. “I don’t know how I would get all my clothes to California. I have too many clothes.” While competing in volleyball at McNary High School, Zielinski played alongside teammate Kara Thomas. Both sophomores decided to come to Linfield to play together once again. “We were best friends in high school. During our senior season, we did not know where we were going to college or even if we would play volleyball in college. We ended up picking Linfield and were roommates as freshmen,” says Zielinski regarding her friendship with Thomas. “Sofia is more than a teammate to me. Playing volleyball with her in high school and now 4

college has been so much fun. The memories we’ve made together will last a lifetime,” she says. Coming into college, Zielinski was part of a freshman class of 11, compared to just four non-freshmen. A defensive specialist and setter for the Wildcats, she appeared in 25 of the 28 matches in 2019. Zielinski and the rest of the team enter this year under new coach, Haley Doerfler. “Haley has been nice overall so far and I really like her. It’s going to be a good adjustment,” says Zielinski. The 2020 season has been marred by the coronavirus pandemic but the Wildcats are lucky enough to be practicing and Doerfler has seen some impressive things from Zielinski so far. “Sofia’s ability to defend and run an offense allow her to be a valuable asset to the program,” says Doerfler. “She gives us depth at the setting position. Sofia has been working hard to develop a strong hitter-setter connection with all of her attackers. “She understands that each attacker has unique strengths. “She’s been diligent in her setting to make sure she is allowing her attackers to utilize their strengths.” The date for the first match of the season is yet to be determined, but it will not be for another couple of months, if that. With volleyball being an indoor sport, full team practices are still not possible, but Zielinski has enjoyed the smaller practices and getting to know the new members on the team. “We do not really know if there will actually be a season in the spring, but it is still fun that we’re practicing,” says Zielinski. “It’s a different dynamic with split groups. We’ll have our first and only two practices as a whole team at the end of October. Right now, we are doing positional groups so I get to see everybody I haven’t seen yet.” Expressing herself artistically has been an important outlet for Zielinski. Whenever she has free time, she loves to use her creativity as another source of income. “I do art projects during my free time when I am not busy with school or volleyball. But I still try to incorporate it as much as I can since I sell my artwork, which is a good source of income,” says Zielinski. She was also in the choir in high school, mostly being a vocalist and playing the piano, drums and ukulele. She’s not done much music making lately, though does enjoy listening to her father’s old records whenever she is back home. Zielinski has a big clothing collection. Shopping for clothes is one of the activities she enjoys most outside of pursuing art and music. “I like to go thrifting. It is just a sustainable way to shop.”
