WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT only time will tell Psychology major Josie Duey’s personal story of blazing new trails remains an unfinished volume, with chapters waiting to be written by ellie holstine ‘23
J
osie Duey isn’t the first in her family to attend Linfield University, but the charismatic senior certainly does everything with her own personal swagger. A member of the Linfield women’s lacrosse team, Duey followed her older sister’s footsteps in coming to Linfield, but a proclivity to the school isn’t uncommon in the Duey family. Their father, Duane Duey, is Linfield’s head certified athletic trainer and older sister Kylee graduated from the school in 2020. Younger brother Royce also attends the university. “I started playing lacrosse in sixth grade when my town organized its first-ever youth team. Kylee was the one who was interested at first and I, of course, had to follow,” she says. Despite the legacy her family has left for her, Josie Duey continues to blaze a path that is entirely her own. Her wide-ranging interests and eclectic personality culminate into a lovable teammate and pillar of the community. “She’ll leave a legacy of being the first to cheer on teammates and someone who always has her teammates’ backs,” fellow senior Bethany Shade says. “She’s a rocket in the midfield and her skill and passion are irreplaceable.” Between the lines, Duey leads by example. She works hard to rally her teammates around their common goal: a conference championship. In private, Duey reflects on her own contributions to the team. She is both competitive and committed, which is the true foundation of a leader. “Our team goal is always to be first in conference,” Duey says. “My personal goal is to leave it all out there. This is my last season playing lacrosse and I’m doing it with some of my best friends. I want to leave the season feeling good about my performance.” Though this is Duey’s finally season on the field, she continues to live in the moment. Rather than mourning her career’s pending conclusion, she immerses herself in the present. “We went on a team retreat back in the fall where I don’t think I stopped laughing the entire time,” she says. When Duey does consider the future, she 2

doesn’t dwell on her transition from player to spectator, but instead ponders the exciting potential of her younger teammates. “We have a really strong freshman class that came in. It’s been a lot of fun learning to play with them. It’s still really early in the season and I’m excited for what’s to come,” Duey says. Despite the busy life led by all student-athletes, Duey’s commitments at Linfield don’t end there. Outside of school and lacrosse, Duey is a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. Being involved in so many extracurricular activities hasn’t always been easy. Duey admits her greatest adjustment while transitioning to Linfield has been learning to balance everything. “The biggest adversity I’ve overcome to be here is juggling school, lacrosse and an off-campus job,” she says. “It was definitely doable for me, but I sacrificed a lot of free time and I had to be really on top of my assignments,” she says. Despite her initial struggles, Duey figured things out. She went on to receive Northwest Conference Scholar-Athlete honors in 2020. Duey’s future beyond lacrosse is bright. This spring, she’ll finish up a bachelor’s degree in psychology and with a minor in law, rights, and justice. Her passion for her studies is clear. Duey demonstrates the qualities of a life-long learner. The idea of concepts not yet discovered is exciting for Duey rather than daunting. “My favorite class that I have taken is senior seminar for the psychology major. We read a lot of interesting books. The class was discussion-based, so I got to talk with other psych major about our thoughts on them. It was fun to be able to use all the of psych knowledge we’ve built up over that last three years,” she says proudly. Her boundless potential and humility are a beacon to those around her. She values diversity in opinion and community. She chalks up her love for her major to a handful of amazing mentors. “My favorite part of the major has been the teaching staff. Everyone in the psych department is super helpful. They teach their classes in a way that is fun and relatable,” Duey says. “I chose to major in psychology because it’s very diverse, and you have a lot of options in terms of career paths.” After she graduates, Duey is unsure what she’ll be doing. She interested in exploring two very different professional fields: Wilderness therapy and social work. In typical Duey fashion, she’d like to take both disciplines a step further and combine them. How will she accomplish this? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure, Duey’s story will continue to be written far beyond Linfield and it’s one worth paying attention to.
