WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT diamond queen

ith a family history of running small businesses, Linfield University’s Shakayla Snyder hopes to one day own her own winery. The senior from Banks, Oregon, grew up with her family owning two Dairy Queen restaurants. The soon-to-be Linfield graduate hopes to begin following the footsteps of her father, Jerry, when she graduates from Linfield with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and wine studies. Snyder says that she chose Linfield “partly for the softball program and partly because of the business program.” At Linfield, she’s been part of the wine tasting club and has a job lined up to work as a marketing assistant at Premiere Cru Solutions, a wine marketing agency. “I’m going to be a marketing assistant to Matthew Thompson, who owns the company. We are going to be doing marketing for about 12 different wineries,” says Snyder, describing her plans after college. Being involved in the wine industry has piqued her interest in owning a winery. When she’s not in the classroom, Snyder is also a catcher on the softball team. Along with her education, she says “Linfield was the only place I was going to be able to continue playing softball,” which was something she wanted to do in college. Her family’s ownership of several Dairy Queens led to her first becoming involved in playing sports. Her parents and other family friends started a Dairy Queen tee-ball team when she was in kindergarten which led to her introduction of the sport. Growing up, Snyder also was involved in dance, volleyball and basketball. At Banks High School, she played softball for four years and played volleyball as well. She was named the captain of the volleyball team, despite having played the sport for just a couple of years. This season, Snyder is one of three graduating seniors on the team. Maddy Podnar and Amanda Reser are the two other two seniors who are also graduating this year. The senior class was bolstered by fifth-year players Kelsey 4

Wilkinson and Kamryn Apling, who each decided to come back for one more season after their senior years were cut short due to the pandemic. “It has been nice having Kelsey and Kamryn come back this year to help build our senior class,” she says. Over her four-year career, Snyder has played in 50 games and started 22 dating back in 2019. She owns a career fieldingpercentage of .984 behind the plate. She drove in career-high three RBIs in a game at Pomona Pitzer in 2019 and has two home runs to her name. “Shakayla has been a tremendous asset to the program over the last four years,” says coach Jackson Vaughan. “On top of being a very hard worker, solid hitter, and providing the team with quality depth as a catcher, she’s been a tremendous leader in the dugout, typically serving as the spark to our dugout energy. “Her energy and selflessness will be sorely missed.” This year has been unique due to the pandemic, but Snyder and the rest of the seniors have done their part and more to make the season enjoyable for the underclassmen. “I’ve enjoyed playing with the girls,” says Snyder. “We’ve made it as fun as possible being seniors, trying to do fun activities with them. We’ve enjoyed being a super goofy team, being crazy in the dugout and making it fun.” The Wildcats enter the final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 31-5 and a Northwest Conference record of 20-4. They are one game back of the conference lead and have been ranked as high as No. 1 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings. Pre-pandemic, Snyder and the rest of the wine studies majors got together to establish the wine tasting club, tasting wine once a month and discussing different wines. But those gatherings have been paused due to the pandemic. Aside from softball and wine studies, Snyder likes to spend a lot of time in her kitchen when she does have some free time. “I love cooking. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I love cooking super healthy meals. l like making my own pasta sauce.” Snyder also enjoys playing card games and board games with her family and friends.

northwest conference tournament on horizon The winner of the Northwest Conference regular-season championship will be decided over the course of four games between the George Fox Bruins and the Linfield Wildcats. Whichever team claims the regular-season championship will host the NWC Tournament, a three-day, four-team event that determines the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Linfield must win at least three of four games during the pivotal series to secure its third straight league title as well as the berth to the NCAA tournament. Berths will be announced May 17 on NCAA.com. George Fox has reached the NCAA playoffs twice in its history, most recently in 2018, when the Bruins and Wildcats shared the title. George Fox is the only NWC program other than Linfield or Whitworth to claim a NWC championship over the last 17 years.

THE WILDCATS Linfield won three of four games over Willamette last weekend. All three wins for the Wildcats came via the eight-run rule. Linfield slugged nine home runs in the series, including seven on Saturday. Katie Phillips and Kelsey Wilkinson are tied for the NWC lead with 51 hits each. Phillips is third in the NWC with a batting average of .425 and fifth with 33 RBIs. Wilkinson leads the NWC with 29 stolen bases. Proffitt is fourth with 34 RBIs. Freshman Tyler Warden made her first career start last week and threw a five-inning no-hitter. Tayah Kelley leads the NWC with 14 wins and 92 strikeouts. Maddy Podnar is second with an ERA of 2.78. Jordan Bennett has made 13 appearances in relief. She has an ERA of 2.50. THE BRUINS George Fox swept the four-game series against Whitworth last weekend. The Bruins have hit 67 home runs this season, which leads NCAA Division III, their team slugging percentage of .595 is tops in the NWC. George Fox’s pitching staff has posted an ERA of 2.92 this season, which is also first. Claire Fountain has hit 16 home runs and driven in 48 RBIs, both figures lead the conference. She has a batting average of .418, which is fifth. Katie Ladd and Savannah Vargas have hit 12 home runs and Kamryn Potter has hit 11, all three are in the top-five in the NWC. Ashley Davis is the conference’s ERA leader and wins leader. She has an ERA of 2.43 in her 14 wins and is second with 80 strike outs. Sarah Storton has an ERA of 3.36, which is fourth in the conference and she has eight wins, which is fourth.

DEL SMITH STADIUM

Del Smith Stadium has steadily evolved into a jewel among college softball facilities in the Pacific Northwest. Named in honor of trustee emeritus and longtime Linfield College athletics supporter Del Smith, the facility slowly took shape over a 15-year period. Many of the early improvements came through the work of players and volunteers using donated materials. In 1990, the softball field became a permanent, softball-only facility. Prior to the 1990 season, the softball field was also used as the Wildcats’ soccer field in the fall. At that time, the field underwent a facelift as the playing surface was moved back 25 feet from the street to allow for portable bleachers, a temporary outfield fence was installed and a single batting cage was erected. In 1995, a substantial upgrade was undertaken which added two covered team dugouts and a home-team dressing room. In addition, a six-foot cyclone fence was permanently installed around the field’s perimeter and the batting cages were outfitted with an Astroturf base.

The move toward permanent seating began in 1997 when an elevated platform was constructed. Stadium lighting was later added in 2001. Recent additions include a warning track and outfield foul poles. Red vinyl slats were inserted into the perimeter fence, adding a finished look as well as a feeling of intimacy to the venue. By 2008, an all-aluminum 400-seat grandstand replaced three sets of portable bleachers, doubling seating capacity. The majority of the funding was provided by a gift from Smith. An enclosed pressbox replaced a makeshift plywood shelter that provided protection from the weather for statisticians and game officials. Mounted on a steel pedestal 25 feet above the ground, the pressbox sits just behind the last row of seating. During the same period of time, an enhanced scoreboard with capability to display each score by inning, replaced the aging model in right field. The facility took another major step

official publication of the linfield wildcats • golinfieldwildcats.com

forward in 2010 with the completion of two covered and partially enclosed batting cages beyond the outfield wall. Most recently, the infield and outfield surfaces were completely revamped in 2011. The top layer of soil was removed, drainage tile was inspected and repaired, and a several layers of gravel and sand were applied to improve the field’s ability to drain during prolonged periods of rain. In addition, auxiliary seating sections were created in the right- and left-field corners to accommodate additional fans during multiteam tournaments. New bullpens were also added next to each team’s respective dugout. More improvements followed in the fall of 2020 and were nearly entirely cosmetic in nature. To enhance the stadium’s aesthetics, the perimeter of the field was completely encircled with mesh branding, graphically honoring Linfield’s graduated All-Americans as well as the Wildcats’ many conference, regional and national championships. New branded padding was added to the backstop and new netting system was installed.
