THE LINFIELD WOMEN begin their regular season this weekend against Northwest Conference rival George Fox at the newly revamped Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex. THE WILDCATS Linfield is led a group of four seniors: Natalie Amara, Kristen Burke, Madi Reimer and Michayla Sponsel. Amara, Burke and Sponsel have previously been named first team all-NWC at some point during their careers and, Reimer, a goalkeeper has logged over 3,800 minutes in net for the Wildcats over her three seasons. In the second year of Steve Simmons’ second stint as head coach, the Wildcats brought in 17 newcomers, including four transfers and 13 freshmen. Linfield posted an overall record of 9-9-2 in the fall of 2019, going 8-6-2 in NWC play to share fourth place in the NWC standings. Today’s match is the first regular-season match for both teams since they ended the 2019 season 16 months ago. THE BRUINS George Fox comes into the season under first-year coach Laura Schott. Like Simmons, Schott been a head coach at the Division I level. She was a two-time Big Sky Coach of the Year at Portland State. The Bruins return all three of their scoring leaders from a year ago: Madison Burch (8 goals), Maggee Hodgdon (6) and Claire Wright (6). They have only one goalkeeper listed on the roster in Annalisa Klein. She started seven matches in 2019, making 33 saves with a save percentage of .750. Going 4-10-5 overall last season and 2-10-4 in conference play, the Bruins finished eighth in the NWC. The two Yamhill County squads played two tough matches in 2019 with both going to overtime. Neither team was able to score a goal in 220 minutes of action. THE SERIES Today’s match will break a deadlock in the all-time series. Since 1994, each team has won 22 matches and tied seven. However, Linfield has not lost to George Fox since 2009, winning 14 matches and tying seven over that span. The two teams will meet again March 14 in Newberg at noon.

ANDREW DUVALL, LINFIELD’S FIRST-YEAR COACH, guides the Wildcats into their season opener today against the George Fox Bruins at the newly renovated Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex. The Wildcats played three exhibition matches this winter, beating the Multnomah Lions 3-0 and the Bushnell Beacons 2-1. They fell to the Warner Pacific Knights 1-0. THE WILDCATS Under a new coach, the Wildcats look to bounce back from a 5-12-2 overall record in 2019. They went 3-9-2 in conference play, finishing sixth. Last season’s points and goals leader, Cesar Cruz-Espindola, returns for his junior season. Linfield’s defensive unit is led by center backs Luke Marks and Makai Shriner. The midfield is powered by Romario Mendoza, Chase Whittaker and Logan Clizer. Among the forwards are Cruz-Espindola and Connor Heintz. The goalkeeping corps is made up of four netminders who saw equal playing during non-conference play. Senior Cam Perron led the team with 43 saves while sophomore Julian Inches made two starts last season. The two veterans are joined by two freshmen, Henry Boudreaux and Peyton Frazier. THE BRUINS George Fox, under third-year coach Biniam Afenegus, returns its top-two goal scorers, Solek Ashikinos and Jackson Keller. George Fox finished last in the NWC with a conference record of 2-10-2 and an overall record 5-12-2. Freshman Luke Hamocon scored three of the four goals scored by the Bruins during a non-conference play. Cole Benton saved 36 shots last season. He returns along with Patrick Ehlringer and Richie Seaman in the goalkeepers room. THE SERIES Linfield leads the all-time series 30-17-3 since record began being kept in 1991. The two teams split the season series in 2019, with the road team winning each time. In Linfield’s 2-1 win in Newberg, Malachi Stalberg delivered the game winner with 57 seconds remaining in second overtime. The Yamhill County rivals meet again in Newberg on March 14 following the women’s match earlier that day.

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded plans for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in late December. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. “This project is absolutely critical, not only for the success of our student-athletes in men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse, but it’s equally as important for students who participate in intramurals as well as members of the community,” said Killgore. “Having a second turf field really opens up so much flexibility in scheduling for all our athletic teams.” The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases. In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass

field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field will be draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player. The upgraded soccer/lacrosse facility serves a variety of uses. In addition to hosting Linfield soccer and lacrosse practices and matches, the new facility provides recreational space for all Linfield students and will serve as a centerpiece for the summertime Olympic Development Program as well as community events. “The whole soccer/lacrosse fundraising campaign really exemplifies what we mean by ‘All In,’” said Killgore. “People who are not necessarily affiliated with soccer or lacrosse stepped up as important contributors to this project. Once that goal is met, donations for the project’s second phase will begin to be accepted.
