HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK

building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times

H

aley Domeck is in her fourth year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle

blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS Linfield embarks on an international partnership with Sias University in Zhengzhou, China A delegation of Linfield University leaders traveled to Sias University in Zhengzhou, China, in late September — and returned with a new partner in international education. President Miles K. Davis, Provost Beth Concepción, and deans Gennie VanBeek and Jennifer Madden attended Sias’ 2023 opening ceremonies and held in-depth discussion on future collaboration between the two institutions. Sias was founded by Linfield alumnus Shawn Chen ’87 with the goal of incorporating Western liberal arts traditions in a Chinese higher education setting. It has more than 30,000 undergraduate students, and offers both Chinese and American bachelor degrees. Chen, who is now chairman of the Sias board, facilitated conversations between the two universities. A memorandum of understanding between Linfield and Sias, signed “in the belief that the research and educational process at both institutions will be enhanced,” calls for the development of a joint-supervision dual degree program with a prospective launch of a small pilot in the fall of 2025. It also calls for explorations of mutual exchanges, including students, faculty, curriculum and more starting as soon as the fall of 2024. “This MOU is just the first step,” Davis said. “Linfield has a long-standing tradition of international dialogue, learning and exchange and this is a natural evolution. I’m very excited to see the opportunities this will bring to our entire educational community.”
