HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH
LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure
W
ITH MORE THAN 25 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 133-26 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012 and ’13). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

Linfield upset second-ranked Pacific Lutheran. He finished his career with 16 interceptions, third-most in program history, and 168 tackles. Smith was a senior on Linfield’s 1992 team that went 12-1 with its only blemish coming in a 26-13 loss to Findlay (Ohio) in the NAIA Division II national championship game. As a player, he helped the Wildcats capture consecutive Columbia Football Association-Mt. Hood League championships in 1991 and 1992. Smith graduated from Linfield with honors in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior, he earned distinction as Linfield’s 1992-93 male athlete of the year. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sports psychology from Oregon State in 1996. Smith and his wife, Darla, have three children. Daughter Josie is a recent graduate of Carroll College. Eldest son Wyatt is a senior at Linfield while younger son Colton is a junior at Linfield.

WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT
IN YOUR CORNER Using skills he refined during a summer internship, Matt Metcalf is gaining experience managing people
A
by ellie holstine ’23
lways giving 110% effort, Linfield University center Matt Metcalf leads by example and holds his teammates accountable. Metcalf has worked hard the past three years to be a consistent contributor and leader. “As a team captain, I want to make sure I lead with my actions and my voice. I want to serve as a role model to the younger guys on the team,” says the graduate of Eugene’s Sheldon High School. As a member of both the football and track & field teams, Metcalf’s leadership roles do not end when he leaves Maxwell Field. He is involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a group at Linfield which advocates for fellow student-athletes. His role is to serve as the marketing chairperson. His responsibilities include advertising and promoting the events SAAC is involved in. Metcalf also serves on the executive board of the Theta Chi fraternity where he is the scholastic chair. In that role, he makes sure everyone involved in Theta Chi maintains satisfactory grades in order to remain involved in the chapter. Metcalf is a big spreadsheets guy. He learned how to make complicated spreadsheets over the summer while interning at Pavilion Construction. Since then, he’s transferred those skills to his involvement on campus. From creating spreadsheets, to planning out a marketing strategy for SAAC, or using data to keep his fraternity brothers accountable for their grades, Metcalf is the man to find the answer to all your Excel questions. “My favorite part about my role as the scholastic chair is keeping people accountable,” he says. “I have a spreadsheet of all of the guys struggling in their classes. I meet with them on a regular basis to make sure they are staying on track and set them up with tutors.” Once he completes his undergraduate degree in management, Metcalf plans to participate in Linfield’s new accelerated graduate degree program, where he will pursue

a master’s degree in design and innovation. He hopes to work in sales within the construction or insurance industries. Spending last summer making spreadsheets and calling potential clients, Metcalf enjoyed working with a company staffed with numerous Linfield alumni. He had the opportunity to expand his knowledge in the construction industry. While working toward his master’s degree, Metcalf, like many others, will be using the extra year of athletic eligibility granted by the NCAA due to COVID. With one more season left of football and two more seasons remaining in track, Metcalf hopes to achieve new personal bests in javelin and plans to remain a mainstay on the offensive line in football. Unlike many seniors, Metcalf has a clear vision for himself for the next couple of years and knows what he wants to do with his career. It leaves him time to focus on sports and being the best leader he can be. “Matt is a great teammate and a great leader,” says football and track team member Zach Young. “He’s one of the most humble and hardest-working guys I know.” For this football season, Metcalf’s goals are to continue dominating opponents on the field and earn All-America recognition. “Being All-American means I have put my all into football and that I have earned my place on Linfield football,” Metcalf says. Thus far at Linfield, Metcalf has been successful in managing the dualsport balancing act. He savors the team environment that football has to offer, while also appreciating how participation in track as a javelin thrower is a very individual experience. “I like how diverse the teams are,” he says. “With football, I have my team to take care of and rely on. On the track team, I get to practice my mental toughness and see what I can personally do as an athlete.” Incredible leadership, two sports, and a full career ahead of him, Metcalf is the embodiment of the quintessential Linfield student-athlete. Through setting the tone for his teammates and fraternity brothers, Metcalf is sure to be missed in two years when he moves on to life beyond Linfield. “Matt leads by example and pushes everyone around him to be the best they can be,” says Young. “It’s always nice to have someone like that in your corner.”

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Tickets for the annual induction, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, remain on sale through October 30 Seven former athletes and one longtime staff member have been chosen for induction into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame on November 13. Tickets are on sale for the Hall of Fame event. Adults are priced at $30 and children 6 and under are $10. Tickets should be purchased prior to Saturday, October 30. To order tickets, go to linfieldsports.universitytickets.com. The Hall of Fame class of 2021 includes: •All-America football lineman Daryl Agpalsa ‘03, the centerpiece of an offensive line that produced one of the most prolific rushing attacks in program history. Agpalsa was an assistant coach on Linfield’s 2004 NCAA championship team and went on to win two more national titles as offensive line coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater. •Joni Claypool ‘06, a three-time NCAA national track and field meet competitor and current Linfield record holder in the women’s discus. Claypool won two NWC crowns in the shot put and was chosen as Linfield’s most outstanding field events competitor three times. •Rose Hollingsworth ‘09, a three-time NWC swimming champion and twotime NCAA All-American. Hollingsworth
set school records in three backstroke events and was the national runner-up in the 100 backstroke at the 2009 NCAA Championships. She also competed in track and field where she ranks 10th all time in the women’s javelin. •Track and field All-Americans Jeremy Lovell ‘10 and Josh Lovell ‘10. The Lovell twins were dominant during their four seasons in McMinnville. Josh Lovell won the 2009 men’s decathlon, narrowly edging Jeremy Lovell for the national title. Josh owns six marks that rank among Linfield’s top 10 while Jeremy recorded five top-10 results. •Middle-distance runner Mike Miller ‘96, who placed as high as third at the NAIA Indoor Championships in the 1,000-meter run and earned NAIA All-America recognition in the 1,500 as well. A transfer from Clark College, Miller set Linfield and NWC records in the 1,500 while sparking Linfield to the 1995 and 1996 NWC team titles. He also led the cross country program to its most recent men’s championship in 1994. •Three-sport dynamo Casey (Stepan) Hyland ‘08, who earned all-conference
accolades in women’s basketball, cross country and track & field. Hyland was a tireless point guard on the basketball floor, appearing in 99 career games. On the track, she starred in the middledistance events, ranking third all time in the steeplechase, fourth in the 1,500, and eighth in the 800. In cross country, Hyland finished 12th at the 2007 NWC Championships. A CoSIDA Academic All-American, she graduated with a perfect 4.00 grade point average. •Tara Lepp, who served on the athletic department staff as head athletic trainer while pioneering the Linfield athletic training education program. Lepp supervised as many as 200 student trainers during her stellar 36-year career, which includes induction into the Oregon Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame and a Most Distinguished Trainer Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association. By the time she retired from Linfield in 2019, Lepp had already transitioned to a new career as a missionary for Open Arms International in Kenya. Honorees were chosen by the Athletics Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS University adding men’s and women’s wrestling to the stable of sports offerings, marking the first additions in 25 years Linfield University on Oct. 4 announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022. The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step
we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.” The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. “Linfield right now is growing from a college into a university, opening a second campus, building a new $37 million science center
