WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT no teammate left behind Whether she’s turning away an opponent’s shot or lifting up friends after a rough day of practice, Linfield goalkeeper Epi Roldan-Rayo is a player and person to count on by riley omanaka ’24

T

ransitioning to college can be difficult for anyone. Linfield University women’s lacrosse goalkeeper Epi RoldanRayo has been forging her own path from the start. As the first member of her family to attend college, RoldanRayo has always had to be self-reliant. Navigating financial aid, class registration – not to mention her participation in collegiate sports – has all been done on her own. Since her freshman year at Linfield, Roldan-Rayo has leaned heavily on school resources to help her navigate the uncertainty of college life. “I had to figure a lot of things by myself at first,” RoldanRayo says. “I really relied on the resources Linfield made available to me.” For Roldan-Rayo, attending Linfield was the perfect choice. It allowed her to continue to live at home in Newberg, just 11 miles away, and be fully integrated into campus life and lacrosse. Roldan-Rayo is on course to graduate in April with a bachelor’s degree in public health and a minor in history. “It is hard to say where I’m going right now,” she says, but Roldan-Rayo has been working closely with the Linfield Career Development office to map out her post-graduation plan. Close friend and former teammate Jasmine Lee sees a bright future for Roldan-Rayo in the public health field. “I can see Epi working with children or as a translator. She’s bilingual and I know she would make a really good bridge for non-English speakers,” Lee says. While Roldan-Rayo always aspired to work in the medical field, public health wasn’t always such an obvious major for her to pursue. “I started as a nursing major when I came to Linfield, but I discovered public health was a better degree choice for me,” Roldan-Rayo says. Working closely with her academic faculty advisor, she discovered her passion for public health. Similarly, Roldan-Rayo did not intend to continue her lacrosse career in college. “I originally didn’t want to play (at Linfield),” Roldan-Rayo recalls. “But after my friend convinced me to try out, I fell in love with the sport all over again.” With her coach and teammate helping rekindle her love for lacrosse, Roldan-Rayo’s competitive spirit burns brightly now. She talks about reaching new heights of team success. 4

MARCH 5, 2021

Despite the team’s limited roster, Roldan-Rayo believes this year’s club could seriously challenge reigning champion George Fox for the Northwest Conference championship. “Our team is pretty small, but I feel like it makes us closer. We’re definitely still very competitive,” Roldan-Rayo says. The family atmosphere brought forth by coach Lindsay Kibler is one of Roldan-Rayo’s favorite aspects of being part of the team. “I really enjoy playing lacrosse at Linfield. I love my teammates and I think they’ll be my lifelong friends.” Roldan-Rayo serves as a leader and friend to each her teammates. She’s always looking out for each team member and is equally qualified to lend a listening ear as she is ready to defend the goal. “My first impression of Epi was that she was super welcoming, selfless and a great listener. I still believe that today,” Lee says. Roldan-Rayo is known for her catchphrase: “I’ve got you no matter what.” She lives up to those words each day. She feels especially connected to her defense and fellow goalkeeper Lizzy Harms. “I work so close with them in practice and games, I feel like we have a special trust in our relationship,” Roldan-Rayo says. Though she’ll graduate this spring, Roldan-Rayo has high hopes for the team in future seasons. “I love the freshmen. They make a great addition,” RoldanRayo says, “They are so athletic and talented. We are really lucky to have them.” On the field Roldan-Rayo is a pillar. Off the field, she’s a self-reliant student. She strives to support her friends and team. With the 2021 season now undeway, Roldan-Rayo is expected to be a key component to the Wildcats’ success. In the shortened COVID-19 season last spring, Roldan-Rayo played in all three matches and made 13 saves. Whether she’s picking up a teammate or making twisting saves, RoldanRayo indispensable to her team. She looks out for her Linfield family and supports them in any way she can. “If ever you have a bad day at practice, Epi is there to listen and help get the mood back on track,” Lee says. Roldan-Rayo’s steady, self-assured personality makes her a great teammate. Those qualities will also make her a capable public health worker and member of the community. She’s always looking to bring people in and elevate everyone. Her ‘no teammate left behind’ attitude shines through during her daily routine and will carry her far in life.

23 epi roldan-rayo The Linfield women’s lacrosse team looks for its first win against the George Fox Bruins in program history. Saturday’s matchup is the season opener for both clubs. THE WILDCATS Led by second-year coach Lindsay Kibler, the Wildcats have won 12 conference games over the last two seasons, second-most in the conference during that span. Linfield’s goal-scoring unit is led by 2019 first team all-NWC midfielders Bethany Shade and Maia Rezoski, as well as 2020 points leaders Josie Duey and Jenna Hessel. Senior Epi Roldan-Rayo is the starter in goal for the Wildcats. She boasts a career 0.406 save percentage over her career. The defensive unit in front of Roldan-Rayo is comprised of veterans Madison Hicks, Gemmajean Patterson and Maranda Tucker. Linfield allowed 10 goals per match in the two conference matches, thirdfewest in the NWC. THE BRUINS George Fox has been the team to beat in the NWC since the conference began sponsoring a championship in the sport in 2015. The Bruins have never lost a conference match. Under the leadership of Katie Brand, who became the Bruins coach in 2017, George Fox looks to replace its leading scorers from last season, Jennifer Burke and Madison Strickland. Returner Andrea Garcia-Milla was third on the team with 13 points during the shortened 2020 season.
