How Much Food Do You Waste?

Reminder to keep an eye out for

Noxious Weeds on public property and report to the Town so we can safely treat these areas with our Eco-friendly Weed Control Program.

In Canada, 63% of the food we throw away could have been eaten. Canada is among the most wasteful countries in the world and most of the waste could be avoided, recycled or composted. Canada has goals to decrease waste by 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2040, to end plastic waste by 2040, and to reduce landfill methane emissions by 50% by 2030. Reaching these goals will require ambitious and immediate actions to reduce waste.

Please submit any sightings to : https://form.foreaction.cloud/submit/arnprior

Furthermore, the key to eliminating methane gases from landfill is to remove organics from the waste stream. Edible food waste makes up a large portion of landfilled organics and could be prevented in the first place. Canada has committed to Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. Remaining organics could be diverted through source separation to compost in an oxygen-rich environment so that no methane is generated during decomposition or anaerobic digestion in-vessel so no methane escapes. This is doable and should be a primary objective of any climate-friendly solution for waste management.

Fire Safety

Open Air Burning

Open Air Burning is regulated in the Town of Arnprior and a permit is required before any burning takes place. In order to receive a “Permit To Burn”, a resident would be required to review Municipal By-Law No. 697419. Provided the resident is able to meet all of the provisions of By-Law No. 6974-19, they can apply for an Open Air Burning Permit.

The Open Air Burning Permit process has moved to a new online portal in 2024.

Apply online at www.arnprior.ca/burnpermit

Note: Tenants must provide written consent from their current property owners through the BurnPermit system. A valid email address for the property owner is required. Those property owners without email addresses can reach out to the Arnprior Fire Department by telephone at 613-623-4231 ext. 2 to be issued their open air burning permit.

Residents are asked to notify the fire department of their plan to enjoy their recreational fire by calling the toll-free on-line portal at 1-877-716-4404.

Please remember to be considerate of your neighbours and the community around you. Be diligent and protect other properties from by-products of combustion such as nuisance smoke and sparks.

Should a complaint be received regarding open air burning, a Fire Official or By-law Enforcement Officer will respond to inspect the burning conditions. If you are found to be violating the terms of By-law 6974-19, the fire will be extinguished and you may be subject to fines.

The Arnprior Fire Department | 67 Meehan Street Emergency 9 – 1 – 1 Back-up fire emergency number 613-623-4141 Non - Emergency Number: 613-623-4231 extension 2 The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

To minimize the risk of fire and burn injury, the Office of the Fire Marshal recommends attending public fireworks displays hosted by your municipality or other responsible organization. If you still choose to have a family fireworks or an informal neighbourhood display, check with the municipality about local By-laws regarding the use of fireworks and follow the important safety information below

Here are some important safety tips to be followed:

• Appoint a responsible person to be in charge. Only adults who are aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks.

• Light only one firework at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For dud fireworks, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water. Dispose of them in a metal container.

• Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass.

• Keep onlookers a safe distance away, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged.

• Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging.

• Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks.

• Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard.

• Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, cause blindness and result in severe burns. As the sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout, it should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury.

• If someone gets burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and seek medical attention, if necessary. For more info please contact:
