Emergency Preparedness Week May 3-9, 2026

How much water does your family need for 72 hours?

Experience has shown it can take 72 hours or more to mobilize a significant relief effort during an emergency. Canadians are encouraged to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours – that’s 3 days – of an emergency This lets emergency workers focus on people in urgent need

Water is a vital resource that you need to have for all family members and pets In an emergency, you may have no water coming from taps, or the water may not be safe to consume Access to a store isn’t always possible, and water stock at stores may be depleted quickly. It is estimated that a person will need roughly 2 litres for drinking and 2 litres for food preparation/hygiene daily For a 3-day (72-hour) period, this equals 12 litres (3 gallons) per person The standard 24 bottle case you can buy at any store is 12 liters of water

Keep water in a cool, dry place and replace it annually.

Use smaller bottles for easier handling.

Include water purification tablets or unscented household chlorine bleach in the kit. Ensure extra water is allotted for pets.

This is what you should have on hand for your 72 hour kit

This emergency preparedness week the Town is challenging you to prep enough water for your household incase of an emergency.

New Carbon Monoxide Alarm Rules

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odourless, and deadly gas Keeping your family safe means ensuring you have working CO alarms properly installed in your home New requirements came into effect on January 1, 2026, that expand where CO alarms must be placed in existing homes

Does your home, cottage or rental have:

A fuel-burning appliance (like a furnace, water heater, or stove that uses natural gas, propane, oil, or wood)

A fireplace

An attached garage

Air for heating that comes from a fuel-burning appliance not contained within the home (e.g., an appliance in a utility shed).

If you checked any of the above you must install a CO alarm in these two locations:

1 Adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms)

2 On every storey (floor) of your home, including storeys that do not have a sleeping area

The Best BBQs are Fire Safe

1 2 3

Clean rust and debris from burner ports

Check for damaged hoses

Apply a water/soapmix to all connections.

Bubbles means there’s a leak

Safety Tips:

Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area

Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grill and in trays below the grill

Never leave your grill unattended

Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it

Charcoal Grills

There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel

If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire

Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.

When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Propane Grills

Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and look for bubbles

If your grill has a gas leak, by smell or the soapy bubble test, and there is no flame, turn off the gas tank and grill If the leak stops, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again If the leak does not stop, call the fire department

If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department Do not move the grill
