The Golden Rule

Found in the Gospel of Matthew 7:12, Jesus states, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” Parnell is known by all friends and business associates as a person of faith, who lives and leads by his Christian beliefs and practices The Golden Rule in his professional and personal life.

From the President’s Desk

was recognized at 2019 spring commencement ceremony with an honorary doctorate for her unwavering commitment to the mission and advancement of Lindsey Wilson College. Dr. Allan Parnell received an honorary doctorate in 2012.

Mr. P Leads LWC With Faith and Wisdom

It has been said that an organization rises to the level of its leadership.

A big reason Lindsey Wilson College has never been stronger in its 121-year history is because of the person who has led the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees for the last 13 years – Dr. Allan Parnell, who announced last fall that he was stepping down as chairman and remaining a trustee of the board he joined in 2003.

Affectionately known as Mr. P, Allan is not only the longestserving chairman of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees, he has been one of the most effective and consequential. Thanks to Allan’s bold leadership and visionary risk-taking, Lindsey Wilson now enrolls more than 4,000 students, the most in college history; expanded our operating budget to nearly $80 million, a 75% increase; and grew our endowment by more than $39 million to $51 million.

Allan also initiated the wildly successful All In for LWC, 48-Hour Chair’s Challenge. Since it started in 2014, Lindsey Wilson alumni and friends have given more than $7 million to support scholarships for our students.

In short, Allan has been a force of nature who has helped propel Lindsey Wilson to the forefront of Kentucky higher education.

Our campus has several physical reminders of Allan’s impact on this college, the most prominent one being Parnell Family Stadium. It was dedicated in 2021 to honor the generosity and deep commitment of Allan, and his wife, Dr. Bunny Parnell, and their family to Allan’s native Columbia-Adair County community and to the Lindsey Wilson mission.

But more importantly, Allan’s advice and guidance have been invaluable to the College’s leadership. As the founder of the truckload contract carrier company Mister “P” Express, Allan knows the essential ingredients of building an organization that not only succeeds but thrives. Allan brought his astute business acumen and keen business sense to Lindsey Wilson trustee meetings, which helped the college navigate through challenging times and enjoy unprecedented successes.

In most situations, it would be a tall order to find someone to succeed Allan as chairman of the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees. But just as Mickey Mantle followed Joe DiMaggio in center field for the New York Yankees, Allan will be followed by an all-star trustee in Denny Howell. The Louisville, Kentucky, business leader has been a member of the LWC Board of Trustees since 2008, and he will help Lindsey Wilson continue its winning ways when he presides over his first board meeting in spring 2025.

Steps Down as LWC Board Chair, Will Remain a Member of the Board of Trustees

Dr. Allan M. Parnell, who served for 13 years as the longest-serving chairman of the Lindsey Wilson College Board of Trustees, announced he is stepping down as board chair at the Oct. 25 fall board meeting. The Adair County native will remain a college trustee.

“It’s been a great honor for me to have served in this capacity,” said Parnell. “I love Lindsey Wilson, I love what it stands for. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to Columbia and Adair County.”

Parnell joined the Lindsey Wilson College Board of Trustees in 2003 and has used his business expertise to assist the board’s efforts to support and expand the college. He was named board chair in 2011. Parnell is the longest-serving chairman of the Board of Trustees in Lindsey Wilson's history.

“The college has performed remarkably well under Mr. P’s guidance, and he leaves at a time when the college has never been stronger,” said LWC President William T. Luckey Jr. “Mr. P made it clear he has never been more committed to the college and its mission. In fact, he will continue to serve as a key member of our board of trustees but thought someone else should experience the joy of leading this enterprise.”

Denny Howell of Louisville, Kentucky, a member of the LWC Board of Trustees since 2008, has been named the new chairman of the LWC Board of Trustees. He will preside over his first board meeting in spring 2025.

Thanks to Parnell’s bold leadership and visionary risk-taking during his 13 years as board chair, Lindsey Wilson has: experienced record-breaking enrollment, topping 4,000 students

• for the first time in school history; increased the Lindsey Wilson Endowment from $39 million to more than $51 million;

• increased its operating budget by 75%, from $46 million to nearly $80 million;

• increased net assets by more than $83 million;

• and initiated the All In for LWC, 48-Hour Chair’s Challenge; since it was

• started in 2014, the alumni and friends fundraising campaign has raised more than $7 million for scholarship support.

From Adair County to Mister ‘P’

One of seven children, Parnell grew up 10 miles south of the LWC campus in a home without electricity or running water. He spent eight years in a one-room schoolhouse before attending Adair County High School, where he was a member of its first graduating class in 1954.

“I’m from Adair County and proudly so. I tell people wherever I go that I am from Columbia, Kentucky, the home of Lindsey Wilson College,” said Parnell. “I also have a deep love for this community. Sometimes I think we overlook Lindsey Wilson’s economic impact on Adair County.

We should all be glad that this college is located here.”

Parnell moved to Louisville, Ky., in the 1960s where he spent more than 17 years working at General Electric Co.’s Appliance Park. He attended GE’s legendary three-year management training program.

In 1987, he founded the truckload contract carrier company Mister “P” Express. What began with three leased trucks grew to include more than 200 trucks and more than 300 employees. The Parnells’ daughter Cindy Collier, an LWC graduate, currently serves as the company’s president and chief executive officer.

“I do believe in the power of prayer, sometimes we take the rough way in life and there’s an easier way to do it,” said Parnell, who at 89 years old continues to go into the office every day. “We should all strive to live a good life. I give the Lord the credit for everything I have accomplished. We honor the Golden Rule at my company every day.”

Parnell is one of Kentucky’s most respected business leaders, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. Mister “P” Express has been repeatedly named one of Greater Louisville's fastest-growing privately held businesses by Business First of Louisville magazine.

In honor of the generosity and deep commitment of Parnell, his wife, Dr. Bunny Parnell, and their family to their community and to the Lindsey Wilson mission, the college’s Blue Raider Football Stadium was renamed Parnell Family Stadium in 2021. Parnell was honored with a life-size, bronze sculpture outside of the stadium entrance to commemorate his service as chairman of the LWC Board of Trustees and as college benefactor.

‘I Love Lindsey Wilson’

“It has been a great pleasure for me over these years to be a part of this institution,” said Parnell, who received an honorary doctorate from Lindsey Wilson in 2012. “As the Bible says, it is more blessed to give than to receive. And I’ve found out in life if I give generously, I receive.

“I can tell you that my wife, Bunny, and I love Lindsey Wilson College and we are going to continue to be a part of and support this college. Not only does Lindsey Wilson teach good ethics and embrace Christian principles, they teach the students how to look to tomorrow and be prepared for the future.”

Bunny received an honorary doctorate from LWC in 2019. The Parnells have been married for 50 years. The couple has three living daughters: Cindy (David) Collier, Merle (Jamie) Gipe, and Kim (Ken) Davis. They also have seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. They are actively involved in their church, Southeast Christian Church in Louisville.

Sara Motyl: ChampionshipWinning Student-Athlete and

Published Scientific

Co-Author

Lindsey Wilson College student-athlete Sara Motyl has made waves both in the pool and in the lab, earning recognition as a co-author in the international MDPI Applied Sciences Journal.

Motyl, a junior from Lodz, Poland, and a member of the Lindsey Wilson swimming program, was invited to participate in the journal during the spring semester of her sophomore year. A double major in biology and psychophysiology with a minor in chemistry, Motyl balanced her time between off-season workouts, an 18 credit-hour course load and working remotely with her colleagues in Poland to complete her contribution to the research.

“I played a role in translating the article from Polish to English so that the innovative research could be published online,” said Motyl. “Initially, I was doing scientific volunteering over the 2023 summer break in Poland and I was doing work on bio-ferments with the Kamchatka Berry under the supervision of Polish scientists Weronika Majchrzak and Ilona Motyl.”

The research article, titled “Kamchatka Berry (Lonicera caerulea L.) Pomace Bioferment as an Innovative Cosmetic Raw Material,” explored Kamchatka berries because of their potential use in industries such as food, cosmetics and medicine. Motyl said the research team was interested in the Kamchatka berry because of its unique health properties and potential as a raw material for functional foods.

“These berries are packed with beneficial nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamin C and compounds that reduce inflammation and support detoxification,” said Motyl. “Additionally, the berries offer a sustainable way to repurpose food production leftovers, such as pomace, helping to reduce waste and cut production costs.”

In addition to health benefits, the team discovered the stability of the Kamchatka berry was beneficial to the cosmetic industry.

“Studies have shown that fermentation of Kamchatka berry pomace leads to a significant increase in vitamin C content (by 141%) and the presence of caffeic acid, which increases the bioactive value in cosmetic productions,” Motyl said. “It also adds to the improvement of organoleptic properties, such as taste and smell and the physicochemical stability of the product, which makes it resistant to changing storage and transport conditions.”

Although the article was published in April 2024, Motyl’s journey with the research team began much earlier – during the summer between her freshman and sophomore years at Lindsey Wilson.

“It was before my sophomore year that I was participating in scientific volunteering with the team in Poland at the Lodz University of Technology,” Motyl said. “When I was helping with writing and translating the English version of the article, I was already back in the USA taking classes and swimming. It was challenging to

make it work mainly because of the seven-hour time difference between Poland and Columbia, Kentucky.”

And Motyl says, all this happened during a semester that was more academically challenging than usual.

“My sophomore year at Lindsey was really challenging,” Motyl said. “I took a lot of hard classes that required a lot of studying. I had to manage my time well to make sure I was on top of school and swimming, but also to meet the deadlines associated with that publication. I had to sacrifice some of my free time because of that – but at the end of the day, I’m glad I did because it was worth it.

A standout on the women’s swimming team, Motyl has garnered numerous accolades for her exceptional performance in the pool. Among her most notable achievements are multiple Mid-South Conference championships and top-five finishes in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, as well as championship and top-three finishes in the 200- and 400-yard medley relay.

She also holds the Mid-South Conference Championship record in the 200-yard medley relay. Twice named MidSouth Conference Swimmer of the Week, Motyl capped off her success by earning NAIA All-American honors in 2024

As she looks ahead, Motyl has one clear goal: attending medical school to pursue her passion for helping others.

“My dream is to get accepted into medical school in the United States and finish my education here,” said Motyl. “Later I want to pursue a career as a physician. I’m not sure what specialization or where in the world specifically. I want to help people as much as I can, and if it’s going to be here or in Poland or somewhere else in the world – life will show me where to go.”

Alumni Spotlight

LWC’s English Program Prepares Alumnus Landon Simmons ’23 for Studies at One of Nation’s Top English Doctoral Programs

For Landon Simmons, Lindsey Wilson College was a launching pad that helped propel him to one of the top graduate programs in the country. A 2023 Lindsey Wilson alumnus, Simmons was accepted into the City University of New York’s and Columbia University’s prestigious doctoral programs in English. In addition to being accepted into two of the top 20 English graduate programs in the United States, Simmons was accepted without first earning a master’s degree – a testament to Lindsey Wilson’s outstanding English major. Simmons chose to study at CUNY because the faculty and its program fit with his research interests. He spent his fall 2024 semester studying under some of the titans in the discipline, including the well-known scholars Nico Israel and Amber Musser.

Historic Spring Commencement

Class of 2024:

Largest

Class in School History

For the third consecutive year, Lindsey Wilson College celebrated its largest class in school history during the spring commencement ceremony in April. Due to the significant number of family and friends in attendance, three ceremonies were held over two days.

A total of 588 degrees were conferred for the 2024 spring class, including 226 undergraduate degrees and 362 graduate degrees. Combined with the 642 degrees awarded at LWC's 2023 winter commencement ceremony, the Lindsey Wilson Class of 2024 boasts a record-breaking 1,230 graduates—the most in the College's history.

The spring events also featured three student speakers. Representing the International Graduate Hybrid Program was Muralikrishna Uppara from Siruguppa, India, who earned a master of science in technology management. Speaking for the graduate programs was Haven Lachelle Stone from Madisonville, Kentucky, who earned a master’s degree in counseling and human development. Representing the undergraduate programs was Maaike Broersma from Bodegraven, The Netherlands, who earned a bachelor of arts in psychology and was a member of the swimming program.

Young alumni and friends making a difference.

The future of Lindsey Wilson College is promising, as evidenced by the growing number of young alumni and friends making significant contributions to support its mission.

“We donate to LWC because we are passionate about furthering education for our community’s youth. When I read Greg Mortenson’s book Three Cups of Tea, I was moved by how much poverty and a lack of education, especially female education, can affect the entire culture of a village. With Russell County having a poverty rate of over 21%, I knew that we could start a small ripple by supporting our local graduates and their college goals. I wanted to give back to others in the same way that so many supported me and LWC gave us the opportunity to make that dream into a reality.”

Chad Gosser and Lindsey Wilson Gosser '10, owners and principal insurance agents at State Farm in Russell Springs, generously donate annually to a scholarship benefiting students from Russell County. The couple resides in Russell Springs with their son, Gabe.

"I support Lindsey Wilson College financially and included the college in my estate plan, because I see the potential and determination of our students every day. It’s my duty to invest in them — not just in the classroom but also through access to opportunities that transform their lives. They, whether they realize it or not, enrich my life in ways that feel like an investment returned a hundredfold. Supporting them isn’t just a responsibility; it’s a great privilege."

“I give back to LWC because they’re forever family and a huge part of where I am today. I also believe in the saying ‘When you get to where you’re going, turn around and help the next in line.’”

Andrea Owens ’09, owner and dentist at Owens Family Dentistry in Columbia, has established an endowed scholarship to provide financial assistance to students. She and her husband, Josh, reside in Russell Springs, Kentucky, where they are raising sons, Henry and James.

LWC Instructor of Business J.C. Phelps has developed such a deep connection to the college that he has chosen to include LWC in his estate plans, ensuring financial support for future generations of students. Phelps is a native of Russell County and has homes in Louisville and Russell Springs, Kentucky.

Chad and Lindsey Wilson ’10 Gosser, Josh and Andrea Owens ’09 and LWC Business Instructor J.C. Phelps have embraced philanthropy early in their careers. Through their generosity, they are not only creating meaningful connections with LWC but also making a lasting impact on the lives of students.

LWC Expands National Science Foundation Grant to Reach More STEM Students

STEM students interested in attending Lindsey Wilson College will have more opportunities for tuition and financial assistance thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

NSF STEM Grant, known as the Unlimited Pathways Scholarship, has been expanded so that LWC can branch out even further to needbased, academically gifted students who are looking for a way to pay for a college education in the sciences.

“The original framework of the grant has changed,” said Associate Professor of Biology and NSF principal investigator Laura Nissley “The UP Scholarship is available to any needbased STEM student, up to the first semester of their junior year. The grant is also available to transfer students and part-time students.”

Students may qualify to receive up to $10,000 annually for four years, amounting to a potential total of $40,000 in educational funding per student. Furthermore, if a student’s circumstances meet specific criteria, the NSF may extend the grant for a fifth year.

“It’s not just a scholarship and that’s what makes this grant so unique,” Nissley says. “LWC’s NSF UP Scholarship can be used for any financial need. If the student needs new eyeglasses, a laptop or food – this grant has been restructured to help with all of those unmet needs.

“We introduce students to a broad range of career options and give them networking contacts for after graduation. One myth we want to dispel is that if you major in something like biology, you must go into the medical field. We will inform students of all the career pathways available,” Nissley said.

“LWC is in a prime location to attract students from anywhere in Appalachia, not just Kentucky, and help them earn a degree in STEM,” Nissley said. “And truly our goal is to increase our STEM numbers in our area. The numbers are dwindling so this is an effort to get those numbers back up for Kentucky and the surrounding Appalachian region.”

Outstanding Financial Year

Lindsey Wilson College performed extremely well in fiscal year 2024 by setting a new enrollment record that drove net tuition, fees, room, and board to an all-time high at $48.8 million, an increase of $11.4 million over last year. Investment performance added $6.9 million which helped create an increase in net assets from operations to a record $15.2 million. Cash and total assets reached all-time highs at $23.1 million and $129.3 million, respectively.

The endowment increased $14.8 million or 53% in the last five years.

Debt has steadily declined $5.1 million or 23.8% in the past five years.

Over the past five years net assets increased $41 million or 66%. In FY24, net assets exceeded $100 million for the first time in the history of the College.

• You are unsure whether you made a gift during the 2023-24 fiscal year. If you believe you made a gift to Lindsey Wilson during the 2023-23 fiscal year, check your financial records or call our Development Office.

• We made a mistake. Although we take great care in compiling our President’s Annual Report, there is always the possibility of error. If you have any questions, or would like your name to appear differently in the 2024-2025 President’s Annual Report, contact the Development Office, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, Kentucky 42728; 1-800-264-0138; 270-384-8516; or info@lindsey.edu.
