2015 BEST OF THE BEST

BEST BEST of the

Welcome Great Leaders Retain Employees Through Teamwork and a Positive Work Environment We recently celebrated the “Best of the Best” in our industry by honoring 13 remarkable employees with the 2015 Founders Award during Boddie-Noell’s annual awards banquet. As leaders, we have the privilege of surrounding ourselves with great employees and making a difference in their lives daily.

O

ur Founders Award winners truly reflect our corporate values and strive daily to create an environment based on these Kathy Trusch values. After Vice President of attending the Human Resources Founders Award banquet and listening to our award recipients, it made me reflect on what we can do as leaders to improve the retention of our employees. Our labor market has become more challenging in the last several months. The economy has improved, and hiring quality employees is more challenging because the labor pool is smaller. We spend a great deal of time interviewing, selecting, and hiring good people. What do we do as leaders to create teamwork to focus on retaining our employees? Great leaders retain their people because of the work environment they create – through excellent teamwork. If you read all of the actions associated with our corporate value teamwork, you will find that great leaders lay out these expectations daily. They encourage an environment where people can ask for help when needed, support team goals over individual goals, help others, praise successes, celebrate team

accomplishments, and set and clearly communicate team vision and goals. Great leaders create loyalty. When striving to retain employees there are many questions we must ask ourselves. Are we assessing the experience of a new employee within their first 90 days of employment from their viewpoint? What about a long term employee recently promoted into a Shift Leader position, or a Manager Trainee position? Are we supporting them and encouraging them, or throwing them into a position to fill a void because we are shorthanded?

What do we do to motivate the employees who have worked for us for a long time? Are we asking them for feedback, or are we taking them for granted? Are we taking the steps necessary to make sure we have created an environment that reflects an atmosphere of family, friends, and people you enjoy spending time with?

“CREATE A CULTURE WHERE ALL NEW EMPLOYEES AND MANAGERS FEEL WELCOME.”

What do our coworkers do to make them feel welcome? What are you doing as the leader to make sure they are receiving the training, orientation, direction, and support and encouragement needed in a new job? Are we following up with new employees in all positions to ask them about their experience, after the first day of work, the first week, and several times during the first 90 days? Do we follow up after 6 months?

Do we tell our current management teams and employees what our expectations are of them to help a new employee feel welcome? Do we discuss how important it is to be a team player and assist our new employees and support new Manager Trainees?

- KATHY TRUSCH

I would challenge all of us leaders to take the temperature in our work environment. We as leaders have the great privilege of surrounding ourselves with great employees and making a difference in their lives daily. Our business is all about people. Thank you for the privilege to be associated with each and every one of you and to serve you daily.

FOUNDERS AWARD

F

ormerly known as the Carleton Noell Achievers Award, the Founders Award is the top operational award given annually by Boddie-Noell. The award is given to the company’s top Hardee’s restaurants, General Managers and top two District Managers. Founders Award winners must meet and surpass an established set of criteria for operational excellence in addition to representing and impacting Boddie-Noell in an extremely positive way. Winning the award is no easy feat. Restaurants are tracked throughout the year in the categories of sales, food costs, payrolls, miscellaneous expenses, and overall restaurant operations. Winners must also exemplify Boddie-Noell’s values.

The Founders Award is given in honor of the company’s three founders, Mayo Boddie Sr., the late Carleton Noell, and the late Nick Boddie Jr., who together opened the company’s first Hardee’s in 1962. Each founder played an integral role in setting the framework which would influence and shape the company for more than 50 years. Terry Lewis, President of Operations, played host for the evening and led the audience through the action-packed awards ceremony. After the final award was given and before dinner was served, members of the Boddie family took a moment to speak to the room about the company and the difference each person makes.

“Our whole company is based on people. People are what make us a great company. From the Founders Award winners who lead our stores to the top Biscuit Makers who have biscuits ready before the sun comes up, you’re the backbone of BoddieNoell,” said Mike Boddie, President of BNE. “You all are absolutely wonderful people and we’re proud to be on the same team as you,” said Bill Boddie, Vice-Chairman and CEO. Mayo Boddie Sr., Chairman and Founder, echoed their sentiments. “We’re not here to sell burgers and fries. We’re here to build people. Thank you for all that you do.” v

Regional Best Biscuit Maker Winners Honored, Champion Announced

F

or almost 40 years Hardee’s customers have started their day with the Made From ScratchTM biscuit that Boddie-Noell introduced to Hardee’s in 1977. Since then, Boddie-Noell Biscuit Makers have been perfecting the craft of baking outstanding golden-brown biscuits which remain a customer favorite.

This year, more than 700 Hardee’s Biscuit Makers representing restaurant’s across North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, and Kentucky competed for the title of the Best Biscuit Maker of 2015. The Best Biscuit Maker challenge is a beloved company tradition that was started by Boddie-Noell in 1983. The competition started in October, and each Biscuit Maker was evaluated based on the quality of his or her biscuits, knowledge of proper biscuit equipment, cleanliness and care of the biscuit equipment, knowledge and execution of company procedures, grooming, and appearance. The competition’s judges included General Managers, District Managers, Regional Directors, Vice Presidents, and other executives in the restaurant division of Boddie-Noell at the five levels of competition.

All four of our regional “Best Biscuit Maker” winners will be featured on the tray liner in all Boddie-Noell Hardee’s restaurants.

A winner from each of Boddie-Noell’s four Hardee’s regions was selected as a regional winner. The four regional winners then competed for the title of Best Biscuit Maker and were honored at the company’s annual banquet at Rose Hill in February. Rose Hill was filled with anticipation as all in attendance awaited the announcement of 2015’s Best Biscuit Maker winner.

“THE BISCUIT MAKER IS TRULY THE KEY TO OUR BREAKFAST OPERATION.”

“The Biscuit Maker is truly the key to our breakfast operation,” said Terry Lewis, President of Operations and host of the awards banquet. “They really set us apart from other restaurants.”

Operations Services Manager, Bill Boddie Jr., presents Champion Juanita Davis with the 2015 Best Biscuit Maker plaque.

or the past three years, she and the Hardee’s of Harlan team have helped make the Christmas holiday special for those in need by uniting the community, raising awareness, and collecting donations.

With many nearby coal mines having closed in recent years and unemployment rates high, the hard work of Jimmie and the Hardee’s team have made a significant impact on city of Harlan by bringing joy to many during tough times. “I love giving back to the community,” explained Jimmie, “I

understand there are a lot of people out of work, and we are trying to help.” Beginning in 2013 with a “Coal Miner’s Christmas,” each year Jimmie chooses a theme and pursues it passionately by creating themed hand-made decorations and ornaments. According to Jimmie, “Coal Miners Christmas” was chosen as the first theme as a tribute to the heritage of Harlan. In 2014, Jimmie and the Hardee’s team celebrated “Hardee’s Golden Angels” by placing names and clothing sizes of local nursing home residents without family on the restaurant’s Christmas tree and allowing guests to sponsor a “Golden Angel” by bringing unwrapped gifts to the restaurant for them. Jimmie then wrapped the gifts and delivered them, along with sausage biscuits. And while Danielle tried not to scream when Michael’s name was announced, she could not contain her excitement as she cheered for her husband. Michael said he was grateful to have Boddie-Noell Chairman and Founder Mayo Boddie Sr. and his wife, Jean, along with Vice-Chairman and CEO Bill Boddie, Sr., Walter, and the Rose Hill management team at the event to support him. “I am very pleased that Michael’s passion and experience were acknowledged through this People’s Choice Award,” said Walter. When both Mayo Boddie Sr. and Bill Boddie Sr. made a special trip to Rose Hill’s kitchen to congratulate Michael again the following day, Michael said it cemented in his mind that he was in the right place. “That kind of support is an experience I have never had,” explained Michael. “It made me think, this is the kind of company I always want to work for.” v ENTERPRISER Spring 2016 | 12

In Loving Memory of Richard Paul Jenkins

Ministry

in a Minute Shared thoughts from your ministry team

Richard Jenkins with his children, from left: Richie, Becca, Richard, and Paul.

The Boddie-Noell family is deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and former colleague, Richard Jenkins.

Psalm 103: 8-14 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love… he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Beginning his career with Boddie-Noell at 16 years old as a crew member at Hardee’s of Kannapolis, NC, Richard devoted more than 30 years of service to BNE before retiring in 1995 as the President of Hardee’s Division.

Matt Baldwin Corporate Chaplain

Richard was most happy when spending time with his family and friends, traveling to sporting events, and embracing entrepreneurship throughout his business career.

A congressman had a meeting with the President. He was going to give the President a piece of his mind. However, in the presence of the President and the Oval Office he was filled with such awe and reverence he could only sit there humbly.

Richard was a loving husband to his late wife, Martha, father to his sons, Richard H. Jenkins and Robert P. Jenkins, and daughter Rebecca J. Pomeroy, and a grandfather to his three grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and Boddie-Noell family.

The Psalmist is not saying be afraid. He is saying come to God with great reverence and awe and you will find a compassionate Father who knows we are human and prone to go our on way. When you meet God on His turf, you will find love, forgiveness, and compassion.

ollectively, Home Office personnel donated 15 large boxes of diapers and wipes, five additional cases of diapers, and monetary donations for the center. Your Choice Resource Center, located in Rocky Mount, NC, is a non-profit Christian ministry that assists teens and women with unplanned pregnancies at no cost to them. The center offers teens and women emotional support and counseling on all of their options while praying that they will chose life for their child. 17 | ENTERPRISER Spring 2016

Virginia Roberson, Executive Director of Your Choice Resource Center, said she and her team are extremely thankful for the donations. “They blessed us with Mount Everest!” laughed Virginia. “When I saw the donations I had to laugh. The pile was so massive. We did a happy dance! It was much more than we had hoped for.” According to Virginia, the number one need of women choosing to parent their babies is diapers. Parents enrolled in the center’s program can attend pregnancy and parenting related classes to earn vouchers they can use for a variety of child care

Asset Protection SAFETY:

Learning Opportunities Within Safety When the term “Safety Violation” comes to mind, we often think to the farthest end of the spectrum. Our mindset is programmed to believe that a violation is something terrible and unruly. If we change the perception of what a violation is, and look at an individual who is performing a violation as a learning opportunity, we can change the safety culture within our restaurant and ultimately help us grow as leaders.

Bunn Boddie Safety and Loss Prevention Manager

O

ne of the hardest things to ask an individual to do is have a crucial conversation with someone who is performing a task improperly. To have that one on one conversation, correct mistakes, and take action can be difficult to some, and come as second nature to others. This is how we improve our safety culture. We are in the people development business. Our purpose is to make our managers the best they can be and to grow each and every individual into the best person they can be. We want to create a safe work environment and cannot do this without correcting the mistakes we see. An individual will never grow and develop if they believe what they are doing is right and no one has taken the time to address their opportunities for

LOSS CONTROL:

growth. Every time we improve upon an opportunity, our comfort zone is increased. The more we approach conflict head on, the bigger our comfort zone gets, and ultimately we end up being able to confront conflict much easier. By correcting employees who are not performing tasks safely and properly, the individual will be able to realize their mistake and grow and develop. The manager who is addressing the violation also grows as a leader and earns respect, and ultimately the day to day operation runs better. Violations should always be addressed promptly and without hesitation with the goal of keeping your team safe and a focus on growing people. When we do this, we in turn grow as well. v

Customer Service Begins With Customer Safety We love our customers and want them to stay safe in our restaurants. As responsible business operators, we are required to provide a safe environment for our customers as well as our employees. Customer safety begins with maintaining the premises for safety. Use the Repair and Maintenance Request for to report maintenance issues. When a maintenance issue could cause a safety problem, call the Help Desk (x1437).

Ann Lupton Director of Loss Control

W

e have to make regular inspections and remedy dangerous conditions as soon as we know about them. We do this by Pathing on a regular basis throughout the day. We also have to warn of dangerous conditions that we know about or should know about which are not open and obvious. Be on the look out for any conditions that could cause a customer or employee to get hurt and restrict the area until it can be fixed. We have floor mats and wet floor signs to keep our customers safe. Please make sure that floor mats are kept clean and lie flat on the floor. Make sure that

wet floor signs are visible to the customers when the floors are wet and put away when the floors are dry. Also, following our floor cleaning procedures step by step will make sure our floors are properly cleaned and slip resistant. Remember, how a customer is treated in the unfortunate event of an accident goes a long way in determining how that customer feels about Hardee’s and Boddie-Noell. Show care and concern and offer assistance when needed. We want all of our customers to have an excellent experience each time they visit our restaurants and this begins by keeping them safe. v

The Enterpriser is published for employees and friends of BNE. Every effort has been made to include as many events and happenings throughout the BNE family as possible. Please send articles, photographs, comments or ideas to Ashley Lane at ashleylane@boddienoell.com.
