Lindsay hadn’t put brush to canvas for the 2019 holiday collection when her world turned upside down. Her daughter, Eva, suffered a traumatic brain injury. For a few days everything stood still; but in the days and weeks to come, a small group of women surrounding Lindsay’s business circled up and planned a holiday collection without new art. The plan would have worked fine. But none of us were surprised when Lindsay texted from the hospital one day, asking for her paints. Lindsay created this entire collection at the children’s hospital in Madison. She completed “A Thrill of Hope” while waiting on test results. She painted “Fresh Snow” while Eva was getting an MRI. Lindsay’s art and life have always been intertwined and fluid—one spilling over into the other. But that’s never been as apparent, or as vulnerable, as it is now. The plan had been to shoot this year’s collection at Lindsay’s home, and Lindsay insisted that the plan stood. Melissa and Joy came as extra hands while Laura and Lindsay styled and shot these lovely images you see here. At the end of the shoot, Lindsay’s home—which had been in various states of artistic chaos for several days—was refreshed, clean, peaceful. It was a week full of hard tensions, but it ended where our hearts were the entire time: at Lindsay’s side in Eva’s hospital room. Christmas, we believe, is wide enough to hold big tensions. Christmas is festivities, food, cozy togetherness, and anticipation for what’s to come. Christmas is also a candlelit service at the end of a weary and broken year. Christmas is a thrill of hope for a world that’s being made right—and Christmas is a reminder that it’s not yet. Our hope is that these special pieces will find their way into your homes and bring comfort and joy from within your own lives, stories, and tensions. Lindsay built her business around the belief that you are worthy of meaningful art. It’s a privilege to bring you what we think is her most beautiful and meaningful collection yet. hope In 2013, Lindsay wrote a blog post about hope. In it, she shared a memory of her friend, Steph, who was in a high-risk pregnancy when she told Lindsay: “I’ve realized that I’ll never regret having hope.” Lindsay wrote: “I don’t know why awful things happen to amazing people… why incredible women get cancer, or struggle with infertility, or depression, or have miscarriages. The only hope I have is in Christ. And when the reality of the world settles in, and I start to not have faith and not pray, and not believe for the best, I think about Steph. I think: I will never regret having hope. And in that hope, I do believe we have power in the face of adversity.” This piece and “Living in the Miracle” were both inspired by encouraging words from friends, and they were two of the last pieces that Lindsay created for this collection. Much of Lindsay’s art is, quite literally, abstract. But these feel like the clear articulation of the collection as a whole—both the theme that emerged in the end, and what motivated Lindsay to create it in the first place. Hope.
