Dear Lindon City Residents and Guests

The theme of our city celebration this year is “Celebrate Family.” The schedule of events this year again provides us many opportunities to do just that. In addition to our immediate family members, we can join with other residents or members of our Lindon City community family.

I encourage everyone to take some time to meet or to become re-acquainted with others in our community in the spirit of fellowship and friendship. Over the course of the past year we have had members of our community who have been away from us and their loved ones. We have been blessed in that they have been able to fulfill their duty to our country and return home safely. We welcome them home and invite all to come out and meet them.

Please review the schedule of events and plan to attend beginning on Saturday, August 7th and continuing through Saturday, August 14th. Please participate in as many events as time and circumstances permit. Make Lindon Days the start or continuance of a cherished family tradition for this and many years to come. I appreciate and thank the Lindon Day’s committee for their efforts in our behalf.

I look forward to meeting and participating with you as we celebrate families in our Lindon Days celebration this year.

Thank You.

Lindon Days Grand Marshals

Members of our community who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom

James Anthony Montoya was born in Washington D.C. to Joseph and Loree Montoya. He was born while his father was away serving in the Vietnam Conflict. His father’s military career in the Marines took their family to Hawaii and they ended up staying until James was 14 years old. He then resided in Mapleton, Utah until he graduated from Springville High School.

James served an LDS mission in Portugal and then went to BYU for his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Family Science. He went on to the University of Minnesota to further his education in Marriage and Family Therapy and was then led to join the Chaplaincy. James joined the military in January of 1989 as a Portuguese Linguist. After 10 years as an enlisted soldier in the Utah national Guard and the Minnesota National Guard, he was commissioned as a chaplain with the 1457th Engineer Combat Battalion out of American Fork. He has served as their chaplain for the past 6 years.

In February of 2002 their unit was called up for duty to serve in “Operation Iraqi Freedom” and were then deployed for 15 months, serving in Baghdad, Iraq. James happily returned to his family and loved ones, his wife Felila Tukuafu Montoya and six children: Jonathan (14), Rachael (12), Tori (10), Shaleena (8), Matthew (5), and Esther (1). He also returned to his new residence in Lindon as his family moved while he was away. He and his family are extremely grateful for the love and support and great show of appreciation from their neighbors and ward members.

Captain Brent Thacker was deplored in January of 2003 as part of the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion of the Utah Army National Guard. The 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion was subsequently stationed at camp slayer in Bagdad, Iraq as part of the Iraq Survey Group. Captain Thacker was the Battalions Communications Officer responsible for all computer and telephone communications for the battalion. As such, he was honored and awarded by his battalion for his faithful service in making sure all the soldiers could communicate with their battalions and with loved ones at home. He returned home to his family in April of 2004.

SSG Mary E. Griffith HHC , 1457 Engineer Battalion (combat) was the section sergeant for the battalion mess (cooking) section. The section cooked out of the field kitchen for three months then spend the rest of the eight months working with the civilian contractor in a consolidated mess hall. She was able to learn quite a bit about East Indian culture because that is where most of the civilian contractors came from.

SSG Douglas V. Olsen was born and raised in Pleasant Grove. He married Dorothy Kunz of Montpelier, Idaho. They moved to Lindon in 1978. They have 3 children: Shaun (Rachel Konold) Olsen of Pleasant Grove, Alease (Wes) Bott of Kansas City, MO, and Chad Olsen of Lindon.

Doug has been in the military for 27 years. Three years in the Army Reserve, four years in Special Forces, and 20 years with the 1457 Engineer Battalion.

Doug is currently the Recovery Team Motor Sergeant for the 1457 Engineer Headquarters. Doug served 4 months in Desert Storm stationed in Germany and 15 months in Operation Iraqi Freedom stationed at BIAP in Baghdad, Iraq.

Lindon Days Grand Marshals

Master Sergeant Richard J. Ovard (Rick) joined the Utah Army National Guard in October 1970 after graduating from Pleasant Grove High School in May. MSG Ovard has served in the guard for almost 34 years. In 1984 he joined the full time force of the Guard and has worked there for over 20 years. He has seen service in several different states and countries, such as Maryland, Arkansas, Alaska, Colorado and Korea, Germany, Panama, Kuwait, and Iraq. He recently returned with the 1457 th Engineer Combat Battalion, from a 15 month deployment to Kuwait and Iraq. He and his unit were stationed in BIAP (Bagdad International Airport) just west of Bagdad. They completed assignments that included cleaning up and rebuilding the infrastructure after the war and securing government facilities in Bagdad. They also provided security for convoys of supplies and materials needed for the rebuilding in Iraq and securing routes used by other US convoys. MSG Ovard is very happy to be back home in Utah. “It’s nice to see the mountains again.”

MSG Ovard is married to Alana Marchbanks Ovard and they have six children and five grandchildren. The 5th grandchild was born after MSG Ovard had deployed, so he didn’t get to meet her until he retuned home. He regrets having missed the first 14 years of her young life, but has gotten to know her well since. The Ovards have lived in Lindon for most of their married life and have built 2 homes here. Alana is a lifetime resident of Lindon. The Ovard’s hope that this will be the last deployment Rick will have to respond to before he retires.

Jackpot Team Roping

Team roping is the only rodeo event where two cowboys compete as partners, sharing victory or defeat.

The “header” ropes the steer’s horns and rides to the left. Then the “heeler” goes to work, roping both of the steer’s hind legs in one of the most difficult maneuvers in rodeo.

The ropers must “dally” (wrap their ropes around the saddle horn) after their head and heel catches. Then time stops. A 10-second penalty is assessed for breaking the barrier (the head start for the steer) as well as a 5-second penalty if the heeler catches only one of the steer’s hind legs.
