EDITOR’S NOTES

Teeming with a variety of eclectic issues and narratives pertaining to site context, the 13 weeks explored the possibilities of creating a creative and humanised environment that is robust for the changing economy.Through the narrative and collage-making methodology adopted from CJ Lim, the studio must translate these stories into a coherent and tangible architectural form.

We had no idea what we were doing and where we were going.

It was meandering and explorative. As we dealt with urban design from the intimate human perspective – with phenomenological, sociological, philosophical, political and technological factors weaved into its complexity – the studio transgressed into the unknown with trials, explorations and discussions crystallised on paper. We waded through our uncertainties as the design unfolded itself through quick hand sketches, drawings and charrettes. They opened up endless possibilities and interpretations for us to organise our thoughts, test our ideas and clarify our intentions. After rolls and rolls of butter papers, serviette sketches, endless test printings and “ridiculously crazy” ideas at 3am, the entire basis of “It’s a Jungle Out There” emerged. This is essentially why we decided to dedicate an entire book just to document this architectural translation process.

This book’s core is therefore a complete archive of all the instrumental sketches made.

Embedded within these drawings is a combination of deliberations and accidents – a constant (re)search for the becoming of a new urban form; delineated by the various themes and issues which each of us pursued throughout the 13 weeks.

As the studio concludes itself, this archive allows us to think about our thinking during the process. Tracing into our sub-consciousness, it embodies our struggles behind the scenes and acknowledges what “was thought of” and what “could become” for this project.
