The chance to spot and observe whale species, wherever you may be headed, is one of the chief thrills of small ship expedition travel.

DEAR TRAVELER, It’s October 12th and I’m writing this from Tahiti. I’ve spent the last two months in French Polynesia working, exploring, and trying to fathom how the future will develop on so many fronts. It’s been a remarkably sad eight months with pockets of joy and exhilaration, particularly here where it is so beautiful and where the people are so uniformly delightful. It is my fervent hope that I can convince you to one day come here, if you have not yet. There is so much beauty and wonder, both naturally and culturally. But that’s not the point of this letter.

We are about to carefully, thoughtfully, and responsibly bring our ships back to life. We haven’t taken this lightly. A dedicated team has been joined at the hip for the past six months working on the details of a multi-faceted plan to re-engage, as I mentioned, carefully, thoughtfully, and responsibly.

We are heading back into the wild, with perhaps an added level of purpose. These past months have been tough on the environment and people in so many places: rangers who protect against poachers in parts of Africa no longer employed; illegal fishers moving more freely as patrol boats are shut down. Resources for the protection of the wild will inevitably be strapped as economies have been hard hit.

We want to actively find creative ways to pick up some of the slack, to be a lifeline of sorts to places that desperately need support. We as a company, tourism as an industry, and travelers can do so much to fulfill the notion of ‘rewilding’—a concept of protecting an environment and working to bring it back to its natural state. We can and, I believe, must come to the aid of our wild heritage, and the people who depend on its health, wherever it exists, by celebrating it, revering it, and finding our own paths to support its essential existence.

We need to get back out there and show these places some real love. Rangers and park wardens need to get back to work, NGOs need to get back to work, and so many people whose livelihoods are connected to travel need to get back to work.

And you, I believe, need to confidently get back to exploring. After all, it’s something you’ve done so admirably, and long to do again.

If there was anything good that came out of the pandemic, and it’s hard to say there was, it was the silence.

As COVID-19 stilled human sound and motion, the whole world heard it: a silence in which something was calling out to be heard:

TRAVELING WITH FRIENDS When my husband Keith and I learned our first-choice Antarctica expedition was sold out, our friend Christine recommended we go to South Georgia and the Falklands instead. We trusted her advice, even though I knew very little about these subantarctic islands. What a discovery! We walked among hundreds of thousands of penguins, we hiked in Shackleton’s footsteps, and watched black-browed albatross feed their chicks from a few feet away at the world’s largest colony!

So, when Christine said she was planning to go on their Marquesas expedition in 2018, we asked to go along and invited another friend, Mary, to make a foursome. We ended up traveling so well together that we signed on for Arctic Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland in 2019.

One of the many pleasures of traveling in Lindblad Expeditions’ style is the community that forms on board; it’s easy to make friends. But the deep pleasure of traveling with friends, sharing countless experiences with each other, within the communal experience has made it our favorite way to travel. Another aspect of traveling together was the book-ending, the extra adventures we were able to enjoy.

After our Marquesas expedition ended in Tahiti, we headed to nearby Moorea to go ATV-ing—an adventurous land counterpart to our sea experience. We had a quintessential French Polynesian waterside lunch at the Moorea Yacht Club, and later back at the InterContinental Hotel in Pape’ete had a luxurious swim and dinner.

When we went to the Arctic, we first rendezvoused in Oslo for a couple of days of sightseeing and dinner at the highly recommended Nodee Sky in the Barcode—reindeer sushi!

ALWAYS SOMEONE INTERESTING TO MEET Our connection to the world’s wild places through conservation and personal relationships in far-flung locations has deep roots. For many guests that’s a compelling reason to choose to explore the planet with us. But there’s more: things are often extra interesting aboard our ships.

For example, in Galápagos, we’ve recently signed an agreement with the National Park, formalizing Lindblad Expeditions ships as platforms of opportunity for science in Galápagos, facilitating research and advancing the training of young local scientists.

We’ve been doing this sort of thing worldwide for decades— helping researchers, like James Balog of the Extreme Ice Survey study glacier retreat, and scientists, like John Durban and Holly Fearnbach, conduct research on Antarctica’s rare Type D killer whales. And through citizen science observations, our naturalists, undersea specialists, and often guests, contribute to science’s knowledge of whales, mantas, and the polar underseas.

We’ve always given fascinating individuals ‘rides’ to field sites.

And through the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship, a professional development opportunity for pre-K–12 educators, we bring teachers out into the world and inspire them to bring the world back to their classrooms—with far-reaching effects (see page 75 for an example). Then, there are our Global Perspective Guest Speakers and others, who come aboard to share their knowledge and insights, as well as the adventure, with our guests.

PIONEERING FARM-TO-TABLE IN GALÁPAGOS Ana Esteves, Lindblad Expeditions’ Director of Hotel Operations, has cultivated a farm-to-table culture in Galápagos. We have purchased some 30 tons of fresh produce, invested money in the farms, and contributed to their well-being and production. And reducing the need to import produce from the mainland by sourcing locally means reducing our carbon footprint as well. Here’s what Clemente, a farmer who supplies us with carrots, cabbage, pineapples, lettuce, leeks, white onions, butternut squash and blossoms, has to say about the program: “What I love the most about farming in the Galápagos is being able to give back to this Island I grew up in. I could spend days on end in the field under the sunshine or rain, but as long as I am out there with my plantation I am happy and fulfilled.
