LINDALE ISD EDUCATOR SELECTED AS REGION 7 SECONDARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR By: LISD Communications

Lindale ISD is excited to announce that Neda Morrow, an educator at Lindale High School, has been selected by the Region 7 Education Service Center to serve as the regional 2016-2017 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Morrow has 19 years of teaching experience with the last three years being in Lindale ISD. Morrow is currently employed at Lindale High School teaching Journalism, Graphic Design and Illustration, Newspaper and Yearbook. Morrow also serves as the Lindale ISD UIL Journalism Team coach. Prior to joining Lindale ISD, Morrow taught at Big Sandy, Pine Tree and Westwood ISDs. “I am so proud to represent Region 7 and Lindale High School,” Morrow said. “Teaching is a privilege, and I am humbled to be able to serve the students of East Texas. ​ I believe in servant leadership. We are all servants to a greater purpose, and I have found mine in teaching teenagers. I love getting to know them and being a part of their lives.”

Morrow earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University in 1994 and then went on to earn her Master of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University in 1997. Morrow has been selected as Westwood ISD Teacher of the Year, Pine Tree ISD Teacher of the Year, Big Sandy ISD Teacher of the Year, as well as Lindale Secondary Outstanding Educator by the Smith County Rotary Club. In 2014 Morrow coached the state champion journalism team.

Morrow’s volunteer work has mostly been within the school system. She has served as a fundraiser project manager, campus mentor and has given her time as a graphic designer, video editor and photographer for multiple projects. Morrow, along with her husband, also serves her community by working with the youth group at her local church.

"Every few years you come across a person that just has a special effect on the people around them. Mrs. Morrow is one of these special persons,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent of Schools, Stan Surratt. “She brings such a positive and high energy joy to everything she does, whether in the classroom with students or with the many extra things she volunteers to do within the district and Lindale community. Mrs. Morrow has a great impact on our students, her fellow teachers and even our administrators. She is certainly deserving of this honor, to be named Region 7 Secondary Teacher of the Year."

The Lindale ISD Education Foundation awarded a total of $32,638.35 this past Spring to Lindale ISD classrooms.

The foundation began awarding grants in November 2009.

Since the first grant cycle, the foundation has awarded $242,977.89 to LISD classrooms for over 70 projects.

LISD POLICE DEPARTMENT

eptember 1st marked the first anniversary of the Lindale ISD Police Department. With the support of our parents, students, administration and school board we had a very successful inaugural year. LISD Police Officer’s wear many, many hats during the course of the day. These duties include, but are not limited to student counseling and intervention, residency verification, parent conferences, welfare checks, criminal investigations, citations and arrests. In addition to these duties, I’m sure you are accustom to seeing us working the many extracurricular events within the district. We take great pride in knowing we are responsible for the safety and security of 4000+ students and 500+ staff members covering 7 school campuses.

As we start this new year, we are all reminded of the joys of back to school traffic. Here at the beginning of week 3, I owe all of our parents a huge THANK YOU for your patience during this extremely busy time of year. As you are dropping your student off or picking them up, please keep in mind the driveways of our campuses are technically included within their respective school zone and cell phone use is prohibited. Our #1 priority is the safety and security of your children and we truly appreciate your attention.

On behalf of the LISD Police Department, I thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your family. These students are our future and we take their safety and well-being very seriously. Our job is purely one of love for children and seeing them grow from their first day of Kindergarten to the day they walk across the stage for their High School graduation.

WHAT'S IMPROVED

16 Early Childhood Center Expansion New Gym! Expanded Cafeteria! New Activity Room!

For the ECC Expansion Project we added almost 8,500 sq ft. total. Included are a new gymnasium with seating for 150, a new activity room, and we doubled the size of the cafeteria! LISD paid cash for the project so no bond was needed and no tax increases.

Alumni Corner

This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient was the Valedictorian graduate of Lindale High School, Class of 1947. He received his bachelors, his Masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He has spent his career as a teacher, administrator, Director of Planning and Accreditation for the Texas Education Agency, assistant superintendent at both Round Rock ISD and Brazosport ISD, served as Superintendent at Lake Travis ISD and a Professor of Educational administration at the University of Texas at Brownsville. He has served active duty in the United States Navy and is a retired commander from the US Naval Reserve.

He has served in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations all over Texas in the various communities in which he has lived. This person has spent his life dedicated to the educational progress of students and the goal of making education better for all. Even in retirement he continues to support the educational endeavors of students.

His direction as President of the Ralph and Billie Howard Foundation has led to over 40 scholarships given to students and teachers at Lindale ISD. Throughout his educational career he has been a positive role model for other educators and is an exemplary example for other Lindale Alumni to follow. Lindale can be proud of this outstanding educator.

The Alumni Association also bestows a Distinguished Service Award for those who served the Lindale Independent School District. This year’s recipient played an important role in the overall development and expansion of Lindale ISD. He is a WWII veteran and a retired attorney. He and his wife moved to Lindale with their three children in Sept. of 1956 and were very involved with the PTA in Lindale. He served on the Lindale ISD Board of Education for many years; also serving as President of the Board from 1970 to 1978.

As the attorney for the school district he was involved in various bond issues and land negotiations in the building program of the school system at a time when many East Texas communities were having their bond issues defeated. He also volunteered as Scoutmaster and Cubmaster serving students from the Lindale schools. This man’s service, dedication and contribution to the Lindale Independent School District is outstanding.

We are proud to present the Distinguished service award to: Mr. Jack Jackson Derek currently works as a Physician/ Orthopedic Surgeon at Abilene Bone and Joint.

LHS SPEECH & DEBATE OFF TO A POWERFUL START!

Congratulations to the LHS Speech and Debate team who traveled to Foster High School in Richmond (just outside of Houston) for the first two tournaments of the year! Individual results are as follows: 1st Cross-Examination Debate - Robert McWhorter ('18) and Anthony Wyatt ('18) 1st Program of Oral Interpretation - Elizabeth Tagg ('18) 1st Program of Oral Interpretation - Elizabeth Tagg ('18) (She won both tournaments!)

1st Poetry Interpretation - Elizabeth Tagg ('18) 2nd Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking - Ronak Desai ('18) 2nd Poetry Interpretation - Samantha Rodden ('19) 3rd Prose Interpretation - Elizabeth Tagg ('18) 4th Prose Interpretation - Elizabeth Tagg ('18) (She placed at both tournaments!)

5th Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking - Evan Bewersdorf ('18) 5th Program of Oral Interpretation - Samantha Rodden ('19) The tournament featured over 40 schools mostly from the Houston area, with some events having over 60 individual competitors!
