Stan Surratt The Lindale Independent School District has the reputation of being one of the finest school systems in Texas. The success of our students in 2018 has certainly strengthened this reputation. Winning the 2017 and 2018, back-to-back UIL Academic State Championships was a highlight for the year. Lindale ISD earning an “A Rating” by the Texas Education Agency was another big success. Lindale ISD was the only district in Smith County to earn this high rating, and one of the few across East Texas.
The overwhelming support shown by the Lindale community in the November bond election was also a proud moment for LISD and the entire Lindale community. The bond will bring many wonderful expansions and new facilities to our school system. The Lindale community is known for its support of its schools which are rich in local heritage, tradition and embody a strong value system. The parents and citizens of Lindale wholeheartedly support the school system because they believe Lindale is a great place to live, work and raise a family. I often tell people that the Lindale community has the perfect combination to foster strong student success; super supportive parents and community members, dedicated and highly skilled teachers, administrators and staff members and bright and talented students. It's certainly a combination that lead to wonderful student success. This annual report is designed to highlight some of the wonderful achievements of Lindale ISD students, teachers and staff members.

In the last several years, LISD trustees have established or revised more than 200 policies. These policies are not intended to allow the board to micromanage district affairs; rather, they hold the entire district, including teachers and administrators, to higher standards. Policies adopted or revised in the last several years include Safety Programs/Risk Management, Employee Welfare, Funds Management and numerous others. Other recent accomplishments include the passing of the Lindale ISD bond, lowering the property tax rate for district homeowners, increasing the teacher pay scale to remain competitive among other districts and implementing “the Lindale TJC Promise,� a program that allows high school students to earn scholarships based on student performance that can ultimately pay for two years of tuition and fees at Tyler Junior College.

UIL ACADEMIC STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Lindale High School won its 5th UIL Academic State Championship (2004, 2005, 2006, 2017 & 2018). The LHS journalism team won its 9th State Championship in 2018 and the LHS speech and debate team won its 8th State Championship in 2018.

Our school cafeteria offers breakfast and lunch daily. Lindale ISD also has more than 50 students participating in the Backpack Program. As part of that program, Lindale ISD sends food home with students for the weekend.

Back-to-Back 5A UIL Academic State Champions The Lindale High School UIL Academic team has won the overall 5A State Championship for the second consecutive year. LHS beat out 5A powerhouses, such as Highland Park and Prosper. Lindale High School scored 157 points with runner-up Highland Park scoring 118 points. This is the 5th overall UIL Academic State Championship for Lindale High School since 2004. "I am so proud of our students! To win back-to-back State Championships in UIL Academics is truly an awesome achievement," said Stan Surratt, Lindale ISD Superintendent. "The Tradition of Excellence of Lindale ISD is certainly alive and growing. Our students and UIL coaches deserve great praise and recognition for their extraordinary successes. Lindale High School is one of the smallest schools in the 5A division, but with our students’ superior academic abilities and great work ethics, along with wonderful support from their UIL coaches, they always represent Lindale at the highest level. It is a great day to be a Lindale Eagle!" The UIL Academic State Meet consists of 22 events including Math, Science, OneAct Play, Spelling, Current Events, Computer Applications, Accounting, several State UIL CX Debate Champions: Journalism events and several speaking events. The Academic State Championship Alec is Ramsey Jonas Thrasher-Evers a 4-part&competition. Debate competed at the Congress Meet in January and also competed in the CX meet in March with Anthony Wyatt and Ronak Desai winning the State Championship in those competitions. Evan Bewersdorf placed 5th in Congress. One-Act play competed in April and placed 6th. It was their first trip to state in 10 years, and they went through 4 rounds of competition to get to state. Evan Howell won All-Star Cast and Sydney Smith was named the Overall 5A Best Tech. Journalism, Computer Science and Computer Applications competed in May. The journalism team of Adrienne Parks and Tyra Rodden won 4 medals and were the Overall State Journalism Champions for 5A. Tyler Meador placed 2nd in computer applications, with Zach Jones and Tyler Russell also competing. Preparation for UIL Academics begins over the summer, where teachers attend workshops and students attend summer institutes. Students compete at invitational tournaments throughout the fall and winter, before most competition begins in the spring. In total, there are 27 academic disciplines ranging from theatre and film, to literature and science. The Eagles are coached by Rory McKenzie and JP Fugler in speech and debate, Amanda English in computing events and Neda Morrow in journalism. Lindale also won the UIL Academic District Championship at every level possible, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade and High School. Our High School team went on to capture the Regional UIL Championship and now the State 5A Championship in UIL Academics. The 2017-2018 school year has been one of the most successful years in terms of student success at Lindale ISD.
Lindale ISD is one of 30 districts in Texas and the only in East Texas to be placed on the College Board’s 9th Annual AP District Honor Roll, for significant gains in student access and success! To be included on the 9th Annual Honor Roll, Lindale ISD had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher. Reaching these goals shows that this district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP. #TraditionofExcellence

Niche, a nationally recognized school research organization, released their list of the safest and best school districts by county. In Smith County, the Lindale Independent School District was recognized as being the best and safest school district.
Texas Education Agency Grades Districts, Lindale ISD on Top The Texas Education Agency has changed the way it measures school accountability in an attempt to make it easier for parents to understand, by assigning districts a letter grade ranging from A through F. Lindale fared best among Smith County school districts, receiving the only A rating. Lindale is one of only 153 of the 1,247 public and charter school districts in the state that earned an A rating, according to the TEA. "We are very proud of the success of our students, teachers and staff members but a single letter grade or word does not truly describe Lindale Schools, teachers or students. We are so much more than a single letter grade and we do so much more. We teach, mentor, motivate, coach, remediate, reteach, help, inspire and most of all love our students, therefore one single letter grade or word can never properly reflect or describe Lindale ISD."

CBS 19: Lindale Marching Band Wins Third Straight Title
Colton Jones Samuel Payne earns a composite score of 36 on ACT. On average, only around one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2017, only 2,760 out of more than 2 million graduates who took the ACT earned a composite score of 36.
At Lindale High School, being a state champ isn't so rare. The Pride of Lindale competed at the state military band competition and brought home a first place trophy. It’s the third year in a row the Eagle Band has brought a state championship trophy back to Lindale High School.

Tyler Paper: Five Lindale Athletes Sign with Colleges
Grayson, Grant and Garrett Sims bring unique experience to the Lindale Eagles football field. The triplets have been sharing the same playing field since birth. They started by playing flag football together in the 3rd grade.
Cody Collinsworth is headed to the University of Portland for basketball. Baseball players Kameron Wheeler and Cody Pike signed with the University of Texas at Tyler and North Central Texas College, respectively. Softball players Jodi DeHart and Deanna Saunders will both play in Region XIV — DeHart for Tyler and Saunders for Navarro.

CBS 19: Special Morning Greetings at Lindale Early Childhood Center
22 schools from across the state come together to build a trailer from scratch and see who had the best grill master. Students were given six hours to replicate an example trailer, while classmates cooked for their team and spectators before being judged on their outdoor culinary skills by the Lindale Fire Department.
High fives, hugs, fist bumps and more! Pre-K and Kindergarten students at the Lindale Early Childhood Center get their day started with a special greeting and a greater lesson hidden behind every gesture.
CBS 19: Lindale 'Life Skills' General Store open for business!
KETK: Lindale High School Baseball Honors Lindale Student, Lucy Heller
Each Week, students in the Life Skills program at Lindale High School spend a few days working in the community. Students earn money for each day they work in the community, which they can then use at the in-class general store. The general store was funded by the LISD Education Foundation.
The Lindale baseball team honored 8 year old, Lucy Heller, who battled several diseases. Lucy and her dad, Ed Heller, threw a ceremonial first pitch to her big brother, Connor.

LINDALE ONE-ACT PLAY STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 10 YEARS Lindale OAP earned top play honors at Regionals, advancing them to State, with the theatre department’s production of ‘Anna Karenina.’ Evan Howell received Best Actor Award and Kyleigh Melvin received Best Actress Award. “We are thrilled to have gone through this journey with our students,” said Taylor Jarman, Lindale High School theatre director. “They have all worked so hard and it is incredibly difficult to achieve this.”

LHS Class of 2022 Sign Lindale TJC Promise Scholarship A large group of Lindale High School ninth-graders have signed up for the TJC Promise, a Tyler Junior College scholarship initiative that will benefit high school students within the college’s tax district. This year, 228 out of 308 Lindale High School freshmen, along with their parents, signed pledges to meet the standards of the program during their high school years.
Beginning with the class of 2020, eligible high school graduates from Lindale ISD and surrounding districts in the partnership, can earn up to two years of tuition and fees at TJC.
“The TJC Promise is an earned scholarship,” TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. “A student promises to work hard, make good grades, give back to the community and come directly to TJC following graduation from high school. In return, we promise to provide the opportunity for them to continue their education.”
With more than 120 degree and certificate programs available at the college, plus extensive technical and training programs, students will benefit from the TJC Promise whether they plan to transfer to a four-year institution or go directly into the workforce.
The TJC Promise will offer a path to higher education by making college accessible and affordable. Scholarship standards are based on student performance in high school, which will instill behaviors early on to ensure students will be successful in high school, college and beyond.
“The Lindale TJC Promise is such a wonderful opportunity for any Lindale graduate starting with the Class of 2020,” Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt said. “I personally attended TJC for two years and it was a wonderful experience. I am excited that our students can now earn a two year college scholarship by making good grades, having wonderful attendance and behavior, and by giving back to our community through community service. The Lindale TJC Promise will help our students, parents, school staff and community focus on attaining a college education after high school much earlier than in the past.”

In 2018, TEA implemented a letter grading system for school districts. The Lindale Independent School District, as we expected, earned an A rating. One of the criteria that schools are evaluated on, is the percent of students meeting standard at each grade level. Over the years, Lindale has continuously outperformed both Region 7 and the State in this area. Our continued academic success is a result of the culture of excellence that permeates the district. Whether looking at STAAR scores, UIL activities, Academic Rodeo, band contests, FFA events, or any of the other activities in which we participate, you will find Lindale on the winners list. Part of Lindale’s Mission Statement is “to empower students to be lifelong learners, leaders of tomorrow and responsible citizens.” Lindale is proud of our achievements and the success of our students.

2018-2019 General Fund Budget Michelle Tate, Director of Finance Once again, Lindale ISD had another outstanding year in terms of finances. The district had a clean audit and earned a superior rating on the Financial Integrity Systems of Texas report, for the 7th consecutive year. Due to Lindale ISD's strong financial standing, the district was able to pay cash for 3 buses ($308,000), 4 land parcels and 1 building ($315,000). The land and building will be used for high school campus expansion, stadium expansion and for a records storage facility for the district.

LINDALE ISD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HONORS 2018 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
The 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient was a 1961 graduate of Lindale High School, graduating as Class Salutatorian. Dr. Clayton Downing spent his career as a coach, a teacher and an administrator with the Lewisville Independent School District, where he was named Superintendent in 1983 and remained there until his retirement in 2001. The Alumni Association also bestows a Distinguished Service Award for those who served the Lindale Independent School District. The 2018 recipient, Mr. Jasper Huff, began his journey with the Lindale Independent School District in 1966 as band director. Between the years of 1966 and 1974, “The Pride of Lindale� was born, as he led the Lindale High School band to its first UIL Sweepstakes in the history of the school.
