LHS FRESHMAN SIGN LINDALE TJC PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP
By: LISD Communications A large group of Lindale High School ninthgraders have signed up for the TJC Promise, a new, Tyler Junior College scholarship initiative that will benefit high school students within the college’s tax district. This past Tuesday, 193 out of 314 Lindale High School freshmen – along with their parents – signed pledges to meet the standards of the program during their high school years. (More students could still sign the pledge however before the December deadline.) In return, the Lindale TJC Promise will fund up to two years of their college education. Beginning with the class of 2020, eligible high school graduates from Lindale ISD, and surrounding districts in the partnership, can earn up to two years of tuition and fees at TJC. “The TJC Promise is an earned scholarship,” TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. “A student promises to work hard, make good grades, give back to the community and come directly to TJC following graduation from high school. In return, we promise to provide the opportunity for them to continue their education.” The TJC Promise was inspired by the Rusk TJC Citizens Promise, the first promise program of its kind in the state of Texas, which is privately funded by gifts from Citizens 1st Bank, The James I. Perkins Family Foundation and others. The new program was also developed in partnership with leaders from surrounding school districts. With more than 120 degree and certificate programs available at the college, plus extensive technical and training programs, students will benefit from the TJC Promise whether they plan to transfer to a fouryear institution or go directly into the workforce. For each high school, the TJC Promise carries a communitybranded name. For example, in Lindale the scholarship will be the Lindale TJC Promise. The TJC Promise will offer a path to higher education by making college accessible and affordable. Scholarship standards are based on student performance in high school, which will instill behaviors early on to ensure students will be successful in high school, college and beyond. “The Lindale TJC promise is such a wonderful opportunity for any Lindale graduate starting with the Class of 2020,” Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt said. “I personally attended TJC for two years and it was a wonderful experience. I am excited that our students can now earn a two year college scholarship by making good grades, having wonderful attendance and behavior and by giving back to our community through community service. This Lindale TJC promise will help our students, parents, school staff and community focus on attaining a college education after high school much earlier than in the past.”
THE PRIDE OF LINDALE HIGH SCHOOL BAND EARNS UIL’S HIGHEST AWARD AT THE REGION MARCHING BAND CONTEST
By: LISD Communications The Pride of Lindale High School Band earned a first division rating from all three judges at the Region Marching Band Contest this past Saturday. This makes 42 years in a row that the band has earned UIL's highest award at the Region Marching Band Contest. "I am so very proud of these young ladies and gentlemen. They have worked extremely hard and with such a positive attitude this year,” said Lindale ISD Band Director Steven Moore. “I also want to thank the band parents, LISD Administrators, LISD Staff and the Lindale Band Staff; we have such a great team. It really does take everyone to make The Pride of Lindale Marching Band successful." Over the next several weeks the LHS Band will be competing in additional contests including the UIL Twirling Contest in Chapel Hill this Wednesday, October 26th. On Saturday, November 5th the LHS Band will be competing at the NAMMB Contest (National Association of Military Marching Bands) in Hallsville. “Lindale ISD is known for its great schools and wonderful student programs, and our band program is one of our best,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt. “Over 700 students participate in our band program and their hard work and dedication, along with the great guidance from our band directors, make our band program one of the very best in East Texas. Despite the pressure and stress of a past 41 years of first division ratings, the Lindale High School Band performed flawlessly. I am proud of the excellence of our band students.”
LHS DEBATE PROGRAM SWEEPS UIL CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE MEET
By: LISD Communications The Lindale High School Speech and Debate Team competed this past week at a state UIL Meet in Austin. With only three entries given to each school for competition within their region, Lindale High School took all three available state qualifying spots. Listed below are the following LHS student qualifiers: • 1st Evan Bewersdorf • 2nd Anthony Wyatt • 3rd Jonas ThrasherEvers “It's always a great feeling to get back to a state meet in Austin ,” said Speech and Debate Coach Rory McKenzie. “It's an incredible feeling to sweep the top three spots in our region. This is a special group of kids who have all of the potential in the world to do even more amazing things. Mr. Fugler and I had a game plan going into the competition and they came through. It's a testament to their work and effort that they did as well as they did. We look forward to competing for a state championship in January!” This is the first year Congressional Debate is considered a fullfledged UIL event after being piloted the past three years. In its fourth year, Evan (Bewersdorf), Anthony (Wyatt), and Ronak (Desai), are the 8th, 9th, and 10th qualifiers in school history. Bewersdorf and Desai competed last year at state as well. Bewersdorf is also a twotime regional champion. Because it is a fullfledged event now, the state medalists will receive UIL State points towards a UIL Academic title. "As Principal I stand in awe at the continuous hard work and dedication that both of these teachers, and all of their students exhibit in order to bring such acclaim to our school and District,” said Lindale High School Principal Valerie Payne. “We are truly blessed to have such talent representing all of us in Lindale!”

The Lindale ISD Education Foundation awarded a total of $32,638.35 this past Spring to Lindale ISD classrooms. The foundation began awarding grants in November 2009. Since the first grant cycle, the foundation has awarded $242,977.89 to LISD classrooms for over 70 projects. Congratulations to the following students on earning a place in the Region 21 HS Choir! Matthew Brooks, Patrick McClain, Daisy Duran (Honor Choir), Jaydn Holt, Emma Harden, Nathan Steele Our Pride of Lindale Eagle Band won 1st place in the 5A division at the National Association of Military Marching Bands Contest! Our newest LHS Speech and Debate Coach, JP Fugler, received the Texas Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award from Humanities Texas! The JH Lady Eagles Volleyball Team finished the season with a win over Whitehouse, which made all four teams the undefeated District Champions! The University Interscholastic League announced that senior Kelsey Crews, juniors Tyra Rodden and Adrienne Parks, and 2016 graduate Lucas Bonds were named to the 20152016 AllState Journalism Staff for their achievements in journalism last year.
