The Lindale Independent School District makes History: 5A UIL Academic State Champions For the first time since 2006, and for the first time as a 5A school, the Lindale High School UIL academic team brought an overall State Championship home from Austin. Over the course of the spring semester’s many UIL meets, the Eagles earned 142 points, beating out 5A powerhouses Highland Park (106), Prosper (98), The Colony in Lewisville (87) and A&M Consolidated (87). “I was a member of the ‘04 and ‘05 Lindale UIL Academics state championship teams, and there is no feeling like earning one as a coach and sponsor,” said Rory McKenzie, UIL coordinator and LHS speech and debate coach. “This is a marathon starting back in January and continuing all throughout May. Becoming a champion after so much hard work is the icing on a truly fantastic year.” During the final UIL state meet, four students secured the final points for a Lindale ISD victory. LHS junior, Evan Bewersdorf, won state championships in the Lincoln-Douglas debate and informative speaking earning the team 30 points. LHS sophomore, Samantha Rodden, placed sixth in poetry interpretation (earning four points) and LHS junior, Ronak Desai, placed fourth in persuasive speaking (earning eight points). LHS sophomore, Ashlyn Ellgass, also placed sixth in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (adding four additional points). When the final points were calculated, the LHS speech and debate team also secured a state championship. This marks the Eagles’ third consecutive year to win the honor at state. In total, the speech team alone earned 17 points. “I am so proud of our high school UIL Academic team,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent, Stan Surratt. “Lindale high

one ofDebate the smaller schools in the 5A division, and to win the overall UIL Academic State Championship is State school UIL isCX Champions: truly special. The 5A division schools include high schools such as Highland Park, Frisco, McKinney, Austin High, San Antonio Alamo Thrasher-Evers Heights, Denton, Richardson and many more well known schools. This state championship Alec Ramsey & Jonas further justifies that Lindale has the brightest students and the best educators.”

“At every turn, these students have surprised me,” said JP Fugler, LHS speech and debate coach. “Our year could not have gone better. This group didn’t just add to our legacy, but created one of their own. This hasn’t simply been a strong season for us, it’s an unforgettable journey.” That journey started in early January with the Congressional Debate state meet. Bewersdorf emerged with a state championship (earning 15 points) while LHS junior, Anthony Wyatt, was awarded a bronze medal (earning 10 points). Furthermore, over spring break with the Cross-Examination Debate state meet, Lindale closed out the final round earning 36 points. Senior Jonas Thrasher-Evers (a three-time state champion) and his team partner Desai, also a Congressional Debate finalist, took the gold medal while LHS juniors, Robert McWhorter and Anthony Wyatt, claimed the silver.

2016-2017

CHAMPIONS

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to win three gold medals at state,” Bewersdorf said. “The success comes from our coaches and a plethora of people who support us tirelessly. They work countless hours to ensure we strive not for perfection, but excellence.” After spring break, the remainder of the academic contests begin competing at the district and then regional level. In April, four students competed in Austin. LHS seniors, Skylore Evans and Kelsi Jones, took first and third respectively in computer applications (earning 25 points). Juniors, Tyler Russell (computer science) and Adrienne Parks, (headline writing) also competed. “Mr. Surratt set a goal at the beginning of the school year for our academic team to win a state championship,” said Amanda English, computer applications and science coach. “It is exciting to see that goal achieved. I am so proud of our students and the hard work they put in to win this championship.” Preparation for UIL academics begins over the summer, where teachers attend workshops and students attend summer institutes. Students compete at invitational tournaments throughout the fall and winter before most competition begins in the spring. In total there are 27 academic disciplines ranging from theatre and film, to literature and science. The Eagles are coached by Rory McKenzie and JP Fugler in speech and debate, Amanda English in computing events, and Neda Morrow in journalism. "I am so proud of the hard work and sacrifice that our students have given this year in their UIL events,” said Neda Morrow. “Lindale is a special district, and there is an academic focus all the way from grades K12. The teachers and students are supported by our administration and community, and that builds a culture of excellence in our schools. Winning the state championship in UIL academics is proof of the commitment our school has for the academic success of our students." “It truly takes a village to make a UIL team run,” McKenzie said. “We have an incredible group of sponsors who make working with their students a priority. None of this would be possible without them and the support of our administration."

Lindale ISD Places on the College Board’s 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Access and Success!

Preparing Lindale ISD Students for College and Career On average, 60% of Lindale ISD graduates pursue a college degree. Some of the colleges and universities they attend include:

LHS Class of 2021 Sign Lindale TJC Promise Scholarship A large group of Lindale High School ninth-graders have signed up for the TJC Promise, a Tyler Junior College scholarship initiative that will benefit high school students within the college’s tax district. This year, 235 out of 318 Lindale High School freshmen, along with their parents, signed pledges to meet the standards of the program during their high school years.

Beginning with the class of 2020, eligible high school graduates from Lindale ISD and surrounding districts in the partnership, can earn up to two years of tuition and fees at TJC.

“The TJC Promise is an earned scholarship,” TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. “A student promises to work hard, make good grades, give back to the community and come directly to TJC following graduation from high school. In return, we promise to provide the opportunity for them to continue their education.”

The TJC Promise was inspired by the Rusk TJC Citizens Promise, the first promise program of its kind in the state of Texas, which is privately funded by gifts from Citizens 1st Bank, The James I. Perkins Family Foundation and others. The program was also developed in partnership with leaders from surrounding school districts.

With more than 120 degree and certificate programs available at the college, plus extensive technical and training programs, students will benefit from the TJC Promise whether they plan to transfer to a four-year institution or go directly into the workforce.

The TJC Promise will offer a path to higher education by making college accessible and affordable. Scholarship standards are based on student performance in high school, which will instill behaviors early on to ensure students will be successful in high school, college and beyond.

“The Lindale TJC Promise is such a wonderful opportunity for any Lindale graduate starting with the Class of 2020,” Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt said. “I personally attended TJC for two years and it was a wonderful experience. I am excited that our students can now earn a two year college scholarship by making good grades, having wonderful attendance and behavior, and by giving back to our community through community service. This Lindale TJC Promise will help our students, parents, school staff and community focus on attaining a college education after high school much earlier than in the past.”

Lindale ISD Recognized as Academic Leader in Texas JANE SILVEY, DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM

"Lindale ISD has out-scored the state and Region 7 in all five content areas since STAAR was first administered in 2012. That's with more than 4,000 students."

Lindale ISD has long been recognized as an academic leader in the state of Texas. Our continued success is a reflection of LISD educator's focus on excellence. Each year, the Texas Education Agency requires schools to administer 20 STAAR tests to students in 3rd grade through high school, assessing reading, mathematics, science, social studies and writing. Since STAAR was first administered in 2012, Lindale ISD has out-scored the state and Region 7 in all five content areas, with more than 4,000 students. Lindale teachers, administrators and staff strive daily to meet the different educational needs of every student. The result of this dedication is evident based on the mathematics and reading STAAR tests. Lindale ISD scored an average of 12 percentage points higher than the state in all tested grades. Lindale is proud of its strong academic reputation. We not only celebrate our students' success on STAAR, but also through their many other successes such as earning the 2017 5A UIL Academic State Championship. Go Eagles!

2016-2017 General Fund Budget Michelle Tate, Director of Finance Lindale ISD had another outstanding year in terms of finances. The district, once again, had a clean audit and earned a superior rating on the Financial Integrity Systems of Texas report, for the 6th consecutive year. Due to Lindale ISD's strong financial standing, the district was able to pay $880, 000 cash for last year's land purchase of 109 acres. The land will be used for future school campus sites as the district grows.
