Stan Surratt The wonderful reputation of Lindale ISD is well known throughout East Texas and across the state.

The Lindale community is known for its strong support of their schools which are rich in local heritage, tradition, and embody a strong value system. The citizens of Lindale wholeheartedly support the school system because they believe Lindale is a great place to live, to work, and to raise a family. The community makes every effort to keep all of the district’s six campuses up-to-date in technology, curriculum, facilities, and educational services.

The Lindale Independent School District encompasses 184 square miles in the northern part of Smith County where it serves Lindale as well as the communities of Carroll, Mt. Sylvan, Swan, and Hide-A-Way Lake.

This 2017 annual report is designed to highlight district information, facts, and the success of Lindale ISD which has served students and families for over 100 years.

Lindale ISD students and staff have more than 3,500 iPads across the district. This school year every student in grades (6-12) was issued an iPad. Over 2,000 iPads have been placed in grade level classrooms.

Neda Morrow Morrow has 19 years of teaching experience with the last three years being in Lindale ISD. Morrow is currently employed at Lindale High School teaching Journalism, Graphic Design and Illustration, Newspaper and Yearbook.

“I am so proud to represent Region 7 and Lindale High School,” Morrow said. “Teaching is a privilege, and I am humbled to be able to serve the students of East Texas."

Morrow earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University in 1994 and then went on to earn her Master of Arts in English from Sam Houston State University in 1997. Morrow has been selected as Westwood ISD Teacher of the Year, Pine Tree ISD Teacher of the Year, Big Sandy ISD Teacher of the Year, as well as Lindale Secondary Outstanding Educator by the Smith County Rotary Club. In 2014 Morrow coached the state champion journalism team.

"Every few years you come across a person that just has a special effect on the people around them. Mrs. Morrow is one of these special persons,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent of Schools, Stan Surratt. “She brings such a positive and high energy joy to everything she does, whether in the classroom with students or with the many extra things she volunteers to do within the district and Lindale community. Mrs. Morrow has a great impact on our students, her fellow teachers and even our administrators.

Ike Anders Inducted Into Texas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame

Coach Ike Anders is a lifelong East Texan who has dedicated his life to the sport of tennis.

Graduating from Lufkin High School in 1975, Anders went on to play tennis at the collegiate level for several schools. He played for Tyler Junior College from 1976-77 under Fred Kniffen, for Hardin Simmons in 1978, and made the All Lone Star Conference team while playing for Stephen F. Austin in 1979. Anders is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He also holds a Masters Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin.

His past professional experience before coming to Lindale ISD includes time as a Head Tennis Pro at the Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Tx and as the Head Tennis Coach for Grand Saline High School. Anders came to Lindale High School in 1993 as the Head Tennis Coach and has since set breaking records under his leadership. Teams at Lindale reached the 3A Team Tennis Championship Finals 6 times, winning the State Championship in 1999, while finishing second in 1996, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2011. Lindale also won the Regional Team Tennis Title 11 of 12 years when they were in the 3A competitive division. Since Lindale has been in 4A, they finished in the top 25, five times.

Along with his induction into the Texas Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame, Anders has also received the following awards from the Texas Tennis Coaches Association: • 2A Coach of the Year 1992 Grand Saline • 3A Coach of the Year 1995 Lindale “This is an individual award, but it took a team to earn it,” said Anders. “So many players, parents, and coaches all deserve a piece of the award. I am thankful for everyone that helped this become a reality.”

LINDALE ISD STUDENTS SWEPT THE DISTRICT 16-5A UIL ACADEMIC CHAMPIONSHIPS ACROSS ALL GRADE LEVELS.

BOTH THE 6TH GRADE STUDENTS AT E.J. MOSS INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL AND 7TH-8TH GRADE STUDENTS AT THE LINDALE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PLACED FIRST ACROSS NEARLY ALL UIL INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM EVENTS, WINNING THE OVERALL HIGHEST RANKING. THE LHS ACADEMIC TEAM PLACED FIRST ACROSS SEVERAL INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM EVENTS AS WELL, WINNING THE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP BY 60 POINTS.

LHS STUDENTS TAKE HOME UIL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS For the second consecutive year the Lindale High School Speech and Debate Team won the 5A State Championship.

The LHS UIL Academic Team won the silver medal at the UIL State Meet, including three LHS students who won individual state chamionships.

Adrienne Parks took home the 5A State Championship in Editorial Writing, while Elizabeth Tagg took home the 5A State Championship in Poetry. Anthony Wyatt also placed 5th in the state for Persuasive Speaking.

LINDALE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR MAKES ALL STATE CHOIR A senior at Lindale High School, Matthew Brooks was selected as one of the few students to advance to the Texas All-State Mixed Choir. Brooks auditioned for the Texas AllState Choir at the Area All-State Choir competition in Waco. This was Matthew's second year to perform with the All-State Choir as a tenor.

"Matthew has worked diligently all year long to achieve this amazing accomplishment,” said LHS Choir Director Casey Halbgewachs. “I am so proud of his work and that this is also his second year to make the all-state choir. The community of Lindale is certainly well represented by Matthew Brooks.”

The LHS Choir also won Five Division 1 ratings at the State Contest!

THE PRIDE OF LINDALE HIGH SCHOOL BAND EARNS UIL’S HIGHEST AWARD AT THE REGION MARCHING BAND CONTEST

THE PRIDE OF LINDALE HIGH SCHOOL BAND EARNED A FIRST DIVISION RATING FROM ALL THREE JUDGES AT THE REGION MARCHING BAND CONTEST. THIS MAKES 42 YEARS IN A ROW THAT THE BAND HAS EARNED UIL'S HIGHEST AWARD AT THE REGION MARCHING BAND CONTEST.

LHS SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM BRINGS HOME 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN UIL CONGRESSIONAL DEBATE In its first year as a sanctioned UIL event, the LHS Speech and Debate Team brought home the 5A State Championship in Congressional Debate. All three LHS speech and debate students that competed at the UIL meet made the State Finals. Yet an individual high school can only enter a maximum of three entries at the district level. For all three LHS students to qualify for the State Finals is a great honor for Lindale ISD. LHS students Evan Bewersdorf, Anthony Wyatt, and Ronak Desai placed 1st, 3rd, and 9th in the final round. Their accomplishments at the UIL meet earned Lindale ISD 25 points toward the State Speech Team Championship.

EAGLE EYE NEWS STAFF WINS PRESTIGIOUS SILVER STAR AWARD The school newspaper received the Silver Star Award from the Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC). This award is the equivalent of a silver medal in UIL at the state level.

“I’m so proud of the newspaper class and how hard they have worked this year,” newspaper adviser Neda Morrow said.

“It takes a lot of time and energy to create an online magazine in addition to a print magazine.

LHS SENIOR CHASSITY SIMS WINS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN POWERLIFTING!

LHS FFA EARNS LARGE SCHOLARSHIPS. LHS Junior Autumn Burris and freshman Zoe Wilder both came home with scholarship money.

Burris’ steer was sold for $17,120. Zoe received a $40,000 scholarship from the show.

LHS JUNIOR WINS TEXAS SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION SPEECH CONTEST

CORBAN SORRELIS FIRST WON AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL, ADVANCED TO STATE, AND PROCEEDED TO WIN THE STATE COMPETITION. CORBAN IS CURRENTLY A SENIOR THIS YEAR WHO IS INTERESTED IN POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT.

LINDALE ISD RECOGNIZED AS AN AP HONOR ROLL DISTRICT Lindale ISD is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that a district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for the opportunity of AP. To be included on the 6th Annual Honor Roll, Lindale ISD had to, since 2013, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the number of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.

“Our students, teachers and administrators should be proud of this recognition,” said Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt. “This recognition comes from an increased number of students taking more strenuous courses while maintaining or improving their high scores on AP exams. This therefore showcases that our students and teachers are doing an exceptional job. For Lindale ISD, this recognition is a true honor.”

LHS Class of 2020 Sign Lindale TJC Promise Scholarship A large group of Lindale High School ninth-graders have signed up for the TJC Promise, a new, Tyler Junior College scholarship initiative that will benefit high school students within the college’s tax district. This year 193 out of 314 Lindale High School freshmen – along with their parents – signed pledges to meet the standards of the program during their high school years. (Students were given the opportunity to sign before the December deadline.)

In return, the Lindale TJC Promise will fund up to two years of their college education. Beginning with the class of 2020, eligible high school graduates from Lindale ISD, and surrounding districts in the partnership, can earn up to two years of tuition and fees at TJC. “The TJC Promise is an earned scholarship,” TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. “A student promises to work hard, make good grades, give back to the community and come directly to TJC following graduation from high school. In return, we promise to provide the opportunity for them to continue their education.”

The TJC Promise was inspired by the Rusk TJC Citizens Promise, the first promise program of its kind in the state of Texas, which is privately funded by gifts from Citizens 1st Bank, The James I. Perkins Family Foundation and others. The new program was also developed in partnership with leaders from surrounding school districts.

With more than 120 degree and certificate programs available at the college, plus extensive technical and training programs, students will benefit from the TJC Promise whether they plan to transfer to a four-year institution or go directly into the workforce. For each high school, the TJC Promise carries a community-branded name. For example, in Lindale the scholarship will be the Lindale TJC Promise.

The TJC Promise will offer a path to higher education by making college accessible and affordable. Scholarship standards are based on student performance in high school, which will instill behaviors early on to ensure students will be successful in high school, college and beyond.

“The Lindale TJC promise is such a wonderful opportunity for any Lindale graduate starting with the Class of 2020,” Lindale ISD Superintendent Stan Surratt said. “I personally attended TJC for two years and it was a wonderful experience. I am excited that our students can now earn a two year college scholarship by making good grades, having wonderful attendance and behavior, and by giving back to our community through community service. This Lindale TJC promise will help our students, parents, school staff and community focus on attaining a college education after high school much earlier than in the past.”

LINDALE SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED FOR HIGH ACHIEVEMENT

Both the Lindale Junior High and High School have been selected by Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Institute for Educational Productivity (IPE) as two of 713 public schools in Texas to receive the title of 2015 Honor Roll School.

“We are thrilled to be named an inaugural Texas Honor Roll School by the Educational Results Partnership and Institute for Productivity in Education!” said Jeremy Chilek, Lindale Junior High Principal. “We are blessed to live in a community with tremendous support for education! We are also very thankful for a dedicated and competitive staff who work tirelessly to ensure our students achieve the highest level of success.”

The Honor Roll is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and highlight successful practices that improve outcomes for students.

Schools receiving this distinction have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time and reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.

For districts with high schools, the Honor Roll recognition also includes measures of college readiness.

Lindale Students Continue to Soar “Every year since the implementation of STAAR in 2012, LISD has outperformed the state in reading, writing, math, science and social studies.”

JANE SILVEY, DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM Spring marks the beginning of state testing for students. Every year students 3rd grade through high school take two or more tests covering core content in mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies, that measure their learning of our TEKS. (Texas Essential Knowlede of State Standards) Lindale’s STAAR scores have exemplified the academic excellence of the district since the 2012 implementation of the STAAR testing program. This year is no different. Lindale continued its path of excellence by once again scoring above the state and Region 7 in every academic area assessed.

There are 20 different STAAR tests given each spring. In 2016 on each of these 20 STAAR tests, 80% or more of Lindale students met the passing standard and on almost half of the tests Lindale’s passing percentage rose to 90% or higher.

Lindale is proud of its strong, well deserved academic reputation. It stands as an example of what teaching every child, every day can accomplish.

“I have a great feeling about the Lindale District of Innovation,” Surratt said. “I made the recommendation for the board to approve the resolution, as I believe it gives us more flexibility as well as more local control . . . because we know what is best for our district.”

2016-2017 General Fund Budget Michelle Tate, Director of Finance Lindale ISD had another banner year in terms of finances. The district had a clean audit and earned a superior rating on the FIRST report (Financial Integrity Systems of Texas).

Due to our strong standing, the district was able to pay cash for last year’s campus expansion at ECC, a project total of $2.5 million.

This year we purchased109 acres at $872,000 for future campus sites.

The drum rolls, the horns sound, and more than 30 teachers open their doors to a large check. After months of anticipation, the teachers are told, with much fanfare, their project will be funded!

"Grant Patrol day is the day we, as Lindale ISD Education Foundation board members, administrators, teachers, and students look so forward to each spring,” said Lindale ISD Education Foundation Board President Vickie Frazier. “To work and invest in such a great cause is very rewarding, but to see the students' and teachers' faces when the band members, balloons, flowers, and BIG checks reach their doorway is amazing! We are also very thankful to our donors who make this possible every year."

The Lindale ISD Education Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) organization that provides funds for classroom projects and programs not funded or under-funded by the district’s operating budget. The foundation is supported through the donations from individuals, businesses and corporations.

The Lindale ISD Education Foundation awarded a total of $32,638.35 Tuesday, March 15, 2016 to Lindale ISD classrooms.

The foundation began awarding grants in November 2009. Since the first grant cycle, the foundation has awarded $242,977.89 to LISD classrooms for over 70 projects.Grant applications are submitted to the foundation by LISD teachers and aides for projects or programs that go above the day-to-day curriculum and offer students an enriched and unique learning experience. Projects selected for funding are rated on a number of criteria including the innovation of the project.
