Suzanne Interiors

If you're looking for ways to update your home, without taking on huge amounts of renovation work, then panelling ideas are a great place to start.

Since starting out my interior design company Jennifer Suzanne Interiors, I have explored many panelling solutions for client’s homes.

One of my first design projects was a period style property renovation and one of the rooms that was previously used as an unloved dining room; I re-designed the space into a relaxing cool home bar and entertaining space.

The main feature of the bar was panelled walls. I designed a replica mould of the existing alcove panelling. I did this by creating a template moulding of the original panelling in the alcove and had the moulding cut to fit that shape and applied the bead moulding onto the straight edge of the mdf panels to create a beautiful shadow gap that added in depth and character to the panelling design.

I love that panelling can create a distinctive style in your home, if you're after a rustic country house look, or want to give your space a modern feel, wall panelling, cladding

and moulding, are all great ways to lift a space and fantastic way to add character, style, and texture to the walls.

Adding wall panelling is also a practical choice, as it can add protection to walls, it’s practical purpose of concealing unattractive and uneven surfaces. Helps avoid general wear and tear, from family life (or cover up signs of previous accidents).

Plus it can add a level of insulation too. Also adds extra durability to walls in high-traffic areas such as staircases and hallways.

Panelling works in pretty much any room. From bedrooms to bathrooms, living rooms to kitchens. There are various styles of wall panels and I find choosing the perfect choice to rejuvenate your well-worn interior walls or to add in character to a new build, here is my top wall panelling styles, tried and tested at Jennifer Suzanne Interiors.

Woo DEN S l AT PANE l S

A wood slat wall are made of slim, vertical strips of wood placed on an acoustic felt backing, usually in black or grey felt.

They run from floor to ceiling. They're attached to the wall with nails. The slats range from ½-inch wide to 2-inches wide, depending on the look you're going for. Also available in white wash, natural oak, walnut, grey, black and blue oxide. They are easy to install yourself, instantly enhancing your bedroom, living room, or office into a refined, modern space.

S HA k ER ST yl E PANE l S

Shaker style is a popular style of panelling; plain straight lines just a simple frame, especially in keeping with the Arts & Crafts style of homes. Shaker wall panels will be made from MDF rails and can be configured in any design, height and width. Simple lines

suitable for any room.

D ECo RATI v E WA ll mo U l DING PANE l S

Using wall mouldings is an excellent way to create stunning designs that can add character to any interior. Whether it's a Victorian mansion, Edwardian property or a modern build, decorative moulding panelling can enhance the ambiance of any interior.

There are plenty of options to suit every property type. From the design of a replica of an existing panel, or finely intricate and sculpted designs. For more ideas of moulding panels, please contact Jennifer at Jennifer Suzanne Interiors.

vERTICA l PANE l S

Vertical panelling is one of the easiest ways to heighten your walls and create openness in a smaller space. It's a detail that will also create dimension and visual interest to your walls. Designed as flat moulding that fit together to create vertical Wainscoting. Great look for hallways; bedrooms and bathrooms as can look almost nautical in style. Can be painted in any colour or wooden vertical panels for a rustic look.

lINEAR F lUTED PANE l S

Fluted wood can be natural, composite, or synthetic, but its key feature is its “fluting,” or the concave carving of the wood. This beautiful wall panel design works seamlessly into both traditional settings and more contemporary interior styles. The repetitive scalloped wall panel detailing is reminiscent

12 Our Home

of traditional style v groove wainscoting but has a modern look proportions and design.

This versatile wall panel is the ideal choice for half height wall panelling and for panelling a wall from floor to ceiling. This design looks great used in bathrooms, bedrooms and hallway panelling.

C EI l ING PANE l S

Ceiling panels can add an architectural, traditional element to a space, as well as making a room feel more cosy and intimate through the layering of materials. Choose ceiling panels materials that are suitable for the ceiling due to the weight and size. Using option such as MDF, foam and vinyl that are lightweight materials to add to your ceiling space.

Coffered ceiling panel is a sunken ceiling

panel and one that can add depth and drama to a space. Wooden panels on your ceiling add texture and depth and using natural materials to add warmth and rustic charm to your ceilings. Coordinate your wall panels with your ceiling panels, to create a bold and cohesive look.

Hope I have inspired you with my tips on wall paneling. I would love to hear your feedback please feel free to message me any of your enquiries to Jennifer@jennifersuzanne.co.uk

It’s that time of year again when we start thinking about home improvements and making the most of our space inside and out. The sun comes out and our work really begins. We’ve been creating bespoke garden rooms since 2001 for gyms, music rooms, art studios, homeworking and increasingly leisure time. One of our largest garden rooms to date included a sauna, bar and pool room!

Each garden room is bespoke and built in-situ, to fit your space without any prefabrication, enabling you to see for yourself the high quality of workmanship which goes into every project.

Award-winning sleep from the World’s No. 1 Bed Brand

If you are looking to enhance your sleep experience, look no further than the award-winning Elevate Ultra Turing Plush from the World’s No 1 Bed Brand, Sealy.

Backed by scientific research, Sealy Posturepedic technology works to provide correct support by aligning the body position during rest. Developed with our three Posturepedic principles in mind – genuine support, true comfort and dependable durability, the Sealy Posturepedic range features a whole-host of technology, unique to Sealy and not available anywhere else!

At the core of Sealy’s Posturepedic range is the AlignSupport® coil, which is manufactured right in our factory in Cumbria, developed by our team of Sealy experts. AlignSupport® is a two-stage coil design, sensing and responding to each individuals’ shape as they sleep. As the body relaxes into the mattress, the springs sense the sleeper’s shape, maintaining their natural posture and spinal alignment. AlignSupport® then springs into action and applies the correct level of support, creating a feel that is completely personalised to each sleeper. Plus, the springs are twice tempered making them altogether even more resilient and durable too.

The Turing Plush is also surrounded by the revolutionary UniCased® XT Edge Support system. The proprietary keys lock into place for the ultimate stability, bringing structure to every point around the mattress, meaning that you benefit from a larger usable sleep surface. It also removes the “rolling off” feeling when you are asleep or getting ready for the day ahead. Sturdy and supportive, UniCased® XT acts as the perfect seating edge for putting your socks or shoes on. The coil-inspired air channels also offer greater breathability and a feel like no other. BasePlank pulls everything together, it’s a stable foundation that you can trust. Multiple air

channels run across the bottom of the mattress too, allowing air to run through the body of the sleep system with ease.

Packed with premium comfort layer after layer, the Turing Plush has it all. Starting with a MemorySense™ ComfortCore™ placed in the centre third of the mattress to target your hips and lower back for the ultimate pressure relief. Followed by our very own InfiniLux™ - a luxe, premium foam that offers resilience and sumptuous comfort. And that’s not all, a double layer of gel-infused foam completes the comfort stack, providing breathability to keep you comfortable as you drift off into a deep sleep, complete with SmarTex™ and ProShield® for a clean and comfortable night’s rest. SmarTex™ is designed to wick away moisture to regulate your sleep climate, whilst ProShield® keeps allergens at bay. Last and by no means least, exclusive to the Elevate Ultra collection, the Turing Plush incorporates a breathable air mesh border, allowing air to circulate through the mattress freely.

Our rigorous approach to testing means we manufacture durable and high quality mattresses that last too. And, all with a 7 year guarantee as standard too.

dudley Council is launching a new age friendly dudley initiative for businesses in the borough.

The pilot project is taking place in Brierley Hill and Halesowen and will then hopefully be rolled out across the borough.

Businesses are being urged to work towards becoming an Age Friendly business to help make Dudley a great place to grow older. They are being asked to work through a checklist, undertake training and stay connected with their customers and community, ensuring they are welcoming and inclusive which will help to reduce loneliness and social isolation.

Businesses that have pledged to be Age Friendly so far include from Brierley Hill, Moor Tattoos, Round Oak Interiors, Dreamland and Smart Simple Repairs and from Halesowen, Holland & Barratt.

Businesses can do lots of things to make their business easier and friendlier for their customers. They can create opportunities for anyone feeling isolated or lonely to stay connected in their community, whether through creating community noticeboards, having a friendly welcome, taking their time with customers who might struggle, offering free space for communities to use, offering facilities such as a chair or toilet, better signage and equally importantly ensure all staff treat everyone with dignity and respect.

Businesses who become Age Friendly, pledge to:

- Be welcoming and friendly to all

- Have safe and accessible space / facilities

- Support our local community

- Support our staff of all ages

Age Friendly businesses receive a pledge and window sticker to display and will be listed on the public health website https://lets-get. com/businesses-that-are-age-friendly-indudley/

as well as additional ongoing promotion of the scheme.

Councillor Ian Bevan, cabinet member for public health said:

“This scheme aims to help older people feel welcome and recognised in businesses across our borough.

“Some older people do feel lonely and isolated and we want to work with local businesses to offer that warm welcome which helps make them feel connected and part of their community. I want to give special thanks to Halesowen BID and the Brierley Hill Businesses for the support they have given on the project.

Allan Cooper, Director, Round Oak Interiors, said:

“I thought the scheme was a good idea, especially how well we were supported by Karen the age friendly team in becoming a member. It also shows that we care about all ages of our customers.”

healthy earS , healthy brain!

You may have read about the link between dementia and hearing loss. Let’s try and help you understand a little more so that you can be comfortable with the facts.

Studies have explored the relationship between these two conditions, and researchers have identified some potential connections. Here are some key points to consider:

1. Cognitive load: Hearing loss requires additional cognitive effort or concentration to process auditory information, especially in challenging listening environments. This increased cognitive load may lead to cognitive fatigue, which could contribute to cognitive decline over time.

2. Social Isolation: Hearing loss can often lead to social isolation and reduced engagement in social activities. Social isolation has been associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.

3. Brain Structure: Studies using brain imaging techniques have shown that untreated hearing loss is associated with accelerated brain atrophy, particularly in areas responsible for processing auditory information and those linked to memory and cognition.

4. Shared Risk Factors: Hearing loss and cognitive decline share some common risk factors, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and smoking. These factors may contribute to both conditions independently or interactively.

5. Neurotransmitter and vascular Factors: Some researchers propose that hearing loss may affect neurotransmitter pathways and blood flow in the brain, potentially influencing cognitive function negatively.

It's important to note that although there is a link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, it does not necessarily mean that hearing loss directly causes cognitive decline so try not to worry. More research is needed understand the relationship between these two conditions.

How can you help yourself? The key is to maintain a healthy lifestyle;

• Regular exercise – Golfing, a regular exercise class or playing with your grandchildren is great, but even a short walk in the garden or around your home can help!

• Eat a healthy balanced diet – don’t give up the things you love but balance it out with that healthy food!

• Keep mentally active – crosswords, puzzles and quizzes are a great way to keep that brain active!

• Socialise – family, friends or a local group even if its just for coffee is great stimulation for the brain!

• Check your hearing! We can help you with this one! our friendly expert audiology teams are on hand to give great advice and support

Early intervention with hearing aids or other hearing assistive devices can improve communication and potentially reduce some of the cognitive load associated with hearing loss.

how hypnotherapy Could help you

Having suffered with anxiety in the past, working in high pressure sales roles, whilst managing the demands of two young children. I understand how stress can impact every aspect of our lives, leading to weight gain, panic attacks, insomnia and negative self-talk.

As a solution focused hypnotherapist, I help people to make significant, positive changes in their lives in a short period of time. I help my clients focus on what they want to achieve rather than on their problems. Sometimes clients feel a certain way, but they don’t know the reason why, or they don’t want to talk about why they feel the way they do.

I work with clients with anxiety, depression, weight management, phobias, sleep problems, confidence issues, imposter syndrome and many other areas. I help my clients to identify and work with their inner skills and resources, to help them to realise their potential and ability to make positive changes.

I offer a free initial consultation if you would like to find out more about how hypnotherapy could help you, please get in touch. Appointments are available at my clinic in Bromsgrove and I also offer online appointments, if preferred.

relaxed Wedding affair

it’s all about t he hen do!

The great thing about weddings today is that anything goes! Gone are the days when you were tied to tradition and had to have the seated wedding breakfast followed by speeches, toasts and cake cutting. Of course you can still do all this and done correctly this produces a beautiful and classical structure for your wedding day. However, what with the ever swelling guest lists and attendees from a varied mix of race and culture now all too common at weddings, Brides and Grooms across the country are opting for a more relaxed affair rather than struggling against the confinements of tradition.

Over the last few years communal feasting is now considered a perfectly acceptable, and let’s face it, novel way of feeding your guests, with big shared platters of food served on tables for friends and family to tuck into together. There has also been an increase in the “grazing style” of receptions such a cocktail & canapes, picnics or even gourmet BBQs all delivering non-fussy yet scrumptious food while your guests can mingle to their hearts delight!

So in reality, what with the acceptance of such a relaxed style of food service there now

seems to be no rulebook about what or how you feed your guests. The only thing that you must assure is that there is enough food to go around and that it is easily accessible.

If you are considering a non-traditional style of wedding food then here are a few tips and considerations which hopefully will help you find the right style for you and your budget!

anyone for Cocktails?

This style of affair can be very glamorous and classy however not necessarily a cheaper option, so don’t forgo the three course meal thinking you’ll save money. One of the main factors here is the venue you have chosen. A cocktail wedding requires a certain style of furniture which the venue you have booked many not have. Poseur tables, bar stools and indeed more bars may need to be hired to style the space and create the right atmosphere which will heavily impact on your budget.

Make sure there is enough staff to make and supply the cocktails as it will take some time for them to get around to everyone. Make it easy for people to help themselves with trays of cocktails or simple flutes of fizz positioned at various points in the room so that people don’t have to queue.

40 Our Weddings

Keep in mind your guest list size. With a sitdown meal you will be restricted to numbers simply due to the number of tables and chairs the venue can hold. Stand up receptions such as cocktail-style weddings will allow for a larger numbers in the venue but you’ll consequently need to feed more people, so it might just cost the same as a seated meal in the end.

Canapes & finger food

Pricing will vary depending on your caterer of course. You have to consider the time of day your reception is being held as this will determine the quantity of food you will need to supply to your guests. Think about portions, if you were to put all the canapés allocated per guest on a plate, would it be enough to make a meal?

It may be an idea to have food points scattered around the venue for the guest’s arrival to avoid people pouncing on the first tray of canapes that appear. Create food stations for guests such as a charcuterie, or cheese plate here and there to enhance the supply of nibbles being circulated.

occasional Seating

Cocktail style weddings are great for mingling but remember to supply occasional seating for the elderly and ladies in heels. Standing up in high heels for 8 hours will result in people kicking off their shoes (never good for wedding photography) or even going home early as they are in too much pain.

If you have elderly guests attending, they will be looking for comfortable seating options to mingle quietly rather than standing up all evening. A selection of comfortable chairs and even sofas would be perfect especially when the disco is in full swing as people will need a breather!

Prepare your guests

Some guests may not have attended a cocktail

style wedding before and therefore might be confused about what food will be served. It is always a good idea to make sure there is a note of this on your invites so your guests aren’t left wondering if they should be fasting or loading up their bellies before the event.

best of both Worlds

If you like the idea of a more relaxed format but think that canapes and cocktails wouldn’t quite deliver enough pomp & ceremony on the day then you could always merge the two styles. Have drinks and canapés served after your ceremony, giving your guests the opportunity to mingle, while you’re getting photos taken with your bridal party.

Then invite guests to a sit-down meal which can allow you to schedule in certain speeches, cutting of the cake etc. Why not try sharing platters if you want to keep it less formal. Then have a roaming dessert with different buffet stations situated throughout the venue or even go back to served canapes for sweet nibbles. You can always have your cake served at one of these stations with tea and coffee available.

41 Our Weddings

What a mixed bag of weather we have had, not sure what to wear from one day to the next, I think we have been looking & buying a few transitional pieces earlier than normal. Autumn is definitely approaching & the new trends are dropping every day. The Co-ord is moving into the Winter, which is fantastic, look out for a few punk embellished pieces to celebrate Vivienne Westwood, wear with an oversized blazer or leather jacket, Metallics are key for day & evening, oversized tailoring is still there with loafers plus winter crotchet.

1

When I was checking out the Vogue forecast, there was a lot of tailoring, wear the tailored trousers with stripe shirts or slouchy knitwear & blazers with rock n roll t shirts, dark florals are a winter trend, so embrace the co-ord, add statement jewellery & fabulous accessories, the shirt dress is key & easy to dress up or down.

niCk & roySton'S diary

Nick and Royston's summer is brimming with exciting escapades. With the luxury of unrestricted travel, the joy of reuniting with friends, and the thrill of forging new connections, their season is bound to be unforgettable.

Jodie`s Wedding Benidorm

Having spent countless years as an inseparable team in the salon, bonds transformed from mere colleagues into a cherished family. Jodie, a fixture at the salon since the tender age of 16, embodies the heart and soul of the Royston Blythe Family. Beyond her remarkable skill as a Colour Technician, she's loved by clients, colleagues, and especially Nick and Royston themselves. Thus, when Jodie revealed her impending nuptials, Nick and Royston eagerly embraced the opportunity to contribute to her special day. Drawing upon their expertise in creating the perfect bridal image, they bestowed upon Jodie a 5-star treatment and she was the real fairy tale bride. Sharing her wedding day was a true privilege, and their heartfelt well wishes accompany her and Lee as they embark on a shared journey of love and happiness.

Benidorm was a destination that proved to be a highlight for Nick and Royston. The creator of the beloved TV series, Derren Litten, extended a warm invitation for them to experience the charms of his acclaimed bar, 'Mateos.' This establishment, named in homage to Derren's partner, brought to life the show's iconic locale and set the stage for an exhilarating week in the sun. Benidorm's genuine and light-hearted atmosphere captured their hearts. Settling into the historic district, meeting many new friends, even mingling with characters from 'Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun' at the Villamar Campsite. Eager for an encore, they've already locked in plans for a return trip. One can't help but wish for a reimagined TV series by Derren, starring none other than Nick and Royston.

London Dinner party

The elegant confines of the French restaurant Oslo Court London set the scene for a memorable evening. Hosting the dinner party was Lisa Voice and among the esteemed guests were Christopher Biggins and Stephanie Beacham, luminaries of the entertainment world. Nick and Royston`s connection with Christopher spans years, a testament to their close friendship.

The evening was a dazzling affair with such a variety of characters, hilarious stories from the stage and the world of entertainment, that fun and laughter was the essence of the evening.

Sandbanks Polo 2023

Sandbanks Polo has evolved into an annual tradition, etching its place in Nick and Royston's yearly calendar after the resounding success of last year's event. Against the backdrop of Sandbanks Beach in Poole, SandPolo emerges as a two-day extravaganza, a spectacle of world-class polo underscored by the clinking of champagne glasses within glamorous company. Following the excitement of the polo matches, a beachside revelry ensues, complete with live performances and the beats of renowned DJs. As the weekend culminated, Nick and Royston joined friends and retreated to the newly revamped Nici Hotel in Bournemouth. Nestled between breathtaking vistas and a Miami-inspired pool, this luxurious haven graces the coastline, providing an idyllic conclusion to an exhilarating weekend.

Wolverhampton Grammar School’s outstanding educational partnerships have been shortlisted for an Independent Schools of the Year Award 2023.

The award nomination celebrates the work of the School’s Jenyns Library and in particular, Head Librarian, Zoe Rowley. Enabling children to meet that one inspirational speaker or to read a life-shaping book can really set them on the path to a lifetime of academic and social achievement. Over the last nine years, Mrs Rowley has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for school children across Wolverhampton and the West Midlands.

Working with Authors Aloud UK, Wolverhampton Grammar School is now the ‘go-to’ school for publishers, providing unrivalled access to the best-loved children’s authors. This year author visits have included Thomas Taylor who illustrated the cover art for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, AF Steadman, Chris Smith and Jamie Johnson series author Dan Freedman. On World Book Day 2023, Wolverhampton Grammar School brought together 750 school children from 20 schools for a fantastic event at Grand Station with the prized How to Train Your Dragon author Cressida Cowell. Thanks to the

generous support of the Merchant Taylors’ Foundation, every child was also gifted a signed hardback copy of Cressida’s latest book.

Emily Birch, a teacher at St. Bartholomew’s Primary School commented, “Many thanks Zoe and the WGS team for your continued commitment to inspiring a community of young readers across Wolverhampton.”

The Jenyns Library is at the heart of the School and every child joining Wolverhampton Grammar School is gifted a book. Students take part in Book Clubs, book-related school trips and become regular visitors to the library. One of the popular extra-curricular clubs is the BBC Young Reporter Club. For the second year running a WGS pupil has been named the West Midlands Regional Winner. Congratulations to Luke in Year 11, who as a keen football player and referee, chose to explore the issue of concussion in football. StoUrbridge PantherS Women'S rUgby

So it’s the start of a new rugby season which is exciting with new players, new kit and new teams joining the league. Rugby truly is a sport for everyone due to the wide is varied positions within a squad of players. Natural physical attributes assist in being suitable for certain roles, tall people are naturally suited to back row positions such as second row, flankers or the number eight. Shorter players are suited to the hooker position, & heavier players and naturally suited for prop forwards. Those with lightning feet can be found on either of the wings. These are just examples and not cast in stone, but many positions on a rugby pitch require different skills and attributes that would suit you.

Stourbridge Panthers are about to engage in the third season of league rugby and we’re always looking to encourage more ladies aged 18 upwards to come and try Rugby and see what it’s all about. We have players from 18 years old through to their late 40s who play competitive contact Rugby week in week out. Stourbridge Panthers train on Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm and Sunday afternoons the weekends when there are no matches.

We have a dedicated support team of six which is made up of both male & female coaches. We have been very fortunate to find sponsorship from four local companies which has assisted massively in supplying kit for the playing squad and coaching team. This seasons sponsors are the Gigmill pub in Stourbridge Heatflow, plumbers and heating engineers based in Brierley Hill, Irwin Mitchell, who are a law firm with a local office in Birmingham and The Cornish Pasty Box located in Wollaston Stourbridge.

If you’d like to find out more information about joining the Stourbridge PANTHERS, then please get in contact with the team manager, Darren Bassett, via email to darren bassett@icloud.com

All aboard the Venice Simplon Orient Express.

Following in the footsteps of royalty, aristocrats and high profile personalities I embarked on the Venice Simplon Orient Express bound for London from Budapest. From the moment passengers arrived on the platform and the elegant train pulled slowly into the station, all eyes were focused on the beauty of the Wagon-Lit carriages.

Smart uniformed porters whisked away my luggage and my charming cabin steward escorted me to a sumptuously furnished private cabin.

The authentic vintage carriages reflect the elegance of rail travel in the 1920’s and 1930’s and feature a rich decor of exquisite mahogany panelling. Each cabin offers comfortable seating with plump headrests and an original working wash basin. I relaxed and gazed upon the passing scenery whilst sipping on a chilled glass of champagne; this thrilling experience is simply delightful and made to be shared.

I then set off to explore my surroundings and came upon the on-board bar where I was easily persuaded to enjoy a cocktail with my fellow passengers and as we chatted we were serenaded by the gentle strains of the baby grand piano, played by the resident pianist.

Conversations turned to our thoughts of the passengers of the past, the intrigue which still prevails today. We imagined perceived situations of long ago with spies plotting schemes in every corner and we were transported to another era.

Back to the present day and I made my way to the elegant dining car. Crisp white linens, twinkling crystal glassware and fine china crockery add to the opulence. After a perfectly presented three-course lunch menu I took a leisurely stroll along the corridor and visited Agatha Christie’s cabin, which still features a holder for a gentleman’s fob watch on the wall.

Agatha Christie became a regular passenger on the train, and was often accompanied by her typewriter. It is said that she was inspired to write Murder on the Orient Express as a result of an incident in 1931 when her journey aboard was delayed for two days due to a thunder storm and the tracks were flooded.

I returned to my cabin and succumbed to a comfortable snooze and it was soon time to dress for the most lavish four course dinner.

On returning to my cabin I discovered that it had been transformed into a bedroom and following my deep slumber I awoke with

the larks and the most delicious breakfast presented by my attentive cabin steward.

All too soon I was disembarking but the adventure continued as the second part of my journey included the most lavish afternoon tea experience on board the British Pullman from Folkestone to London Victoria. The cream and umber coloured Pullman carriages are elegantly furnished and rich in history. Ibis, the oldest carriage, was built in 1925 and features exquisite marquetry medallions and Liberty print upholstery and it was once part of the Cunard boat train transporting passengers to Southampton.

As my journey came to an end, I reflected on the words of Agatha Christie… ‘All my life I had wanted to go on the Orient Express. When I had travelled to France or Spain or Italy, the Orient Express had often been standing at Calais and I had longed to climb up into it’

mazda Cx-60

The all-new Mazda CX60 certainly makes a statement wherever it is parked, it is a very large SUV, stylish in appearance, boxy almost, writes

The wheel arches and the huge 20” wheels really do give it a stance and presence.

The interior has been enhanced, there is plenty of wood and leather. I also like the feeling of spaciousness, due in no doubt to the sheer size of the vehicle. Some drivers may be intimidated by its sheer bulk, but when you have spent a few hours behind the wheel with the excellent power steering, brakes, automatic transmission, reversing cameras, even front facing camera, the plethora of external audio devices to tell you when you are in danger of nudging or hitting something, it makes for a vehicle you will soon

get comfortable within.

If you have a large family this could be the vehicle for you. It will swallow 4 adults comfortably and 5 would not complain, add in to the equation a massive boot and you can appreciate that this is a vehicle that is going to win friends.

Unusually in this current period and certainly with the clock ticking on ICE engines Mazda have equipped the CX-60 with a 3.3 litres diesel engine. This is a break in tradition where most manufacturers are reducing engine size and reducing cylinders and turbo charging them. The engine was a responsive willing companion at all times. The automatic gearbox was an absolute delight with 200ps available.

60

The performance figures of a 0-60 in marginally just over 8 seconds and a top speed where legal at 132mph, the vehicle despite its size and weight is no slouch, Mazda suggests a combined fuel figure could be mid-50’s, and during a week with extensively varied terrain I achieved, according to the computer 52 mpg, which for a vehicle of this sheer size and capacity is exceptional.

The standard fittings on the Exclusive-Line test car were extensive. It would take more words that I am allowed to incorporate all the fitments, electrically heated and adjustable mirrors, front rain sensing wipers, LED headlights with an auto level, a reversing camera, front and rear sensors, electric parking brake with hold. The list goes on and on and on.

Safety has not been overlooked in any shape or form and there are a multitude of air bags, together with alarms for front cross traffic

alert, lane departure, cruise control is also a standard feature.

The infotainment is controlled and operated from a 12.3” colour centre display and it has a little twisty knob on the central pillar near the gear lever to control it all Apple Play and Android Auto are also available, a heated leather steering wheel and on my particular derivative the facility not just to heat the seats front and passenger, but also to cool them down, by a wonderful cooling system in built in to the seats.

There can be little doubt Mazda have for years and years been overlooked by people going to purchase a car and I have often suggested they should look at the Mazda range, most people only think of the Mazda-MX5. However, if you are looking for a large family friendly SUV vehicle, go and check out the CX-60.

The on the road price starts at £42,990.

Unfortunately, as humans, we are poorly wired to be good investors. The reptilian depths of our brains, which promote survival instincts - such as fight and flight, fear and greed and an aversion to losses – help us to survive but can lead us into bad investing ways.

For many investors a propensity to place too much weight on recent events in terms of what the future may look like is quite common. This is known as ‘recency bias’. Around 50% to 60% of all investors appear to suffer from recency bias, and the number is even higher for younger investors, possibly due to the influence of social media.

But investors that think the recent past somehow presages future outcomes and picking what has just done well and avoiding what has just done badly, is a winning strategy, are likely to be disappointed.

Abandoning or adding to a portfolio simply by extrapolating what has recently done well or badly is not a great strategy and is likely to lead to constant portfolio change, less-well diversified portfolios and poorer outcomes.

Instead, perhaps reflect a while on these wise words written by Charles D. Ellis in his excellent book Winning the Loser’s Game1 (Ellis, 2002):

‘The hardest work in investing is not intellectual, it’s emotional. Being rational in an emotional environment is not easy. The hardest work is not figuring out the optimal investment policy; it’s sustaining a long-term focus at market highs or market lows and staying committed to a sound investment policy. Holding on to sound investment policy at market highs and market lows is notoriously hard and important work, particularly when Mr. Market always tries to trick you into making changes.’

At Cre8 our systematic approach to investing means our portfolios are low cost, well diversified and we help you limit portfolio change.
