jute placemats paired with a garland brings the outdoors-in for a calm and atmospheric dinner setting with loved ones. Harvest season is in its prime at this time, so fruits and vegetables such as pumpkins or squashes make for a great table decor addition and with the benefit of adding a pop of colour too!

Displaying dried flowers such as pampas grass and dried ruscus add a subtle, rustic styling element to your room as summer transitions into autumn. And the best part about these?

They’re so low maintenance! For a glamorous Halloween centrepiece idea, paint your pumpkin white and use it as a vase to home a stunning dried flower arrangement for the wow factor.

Set the tone of autumn in your house with your senses! Autumnal scents add ambience to your space and create a cosy vibe. I love browsing the candle shelves in September/ October because the scents are just the best at this time of year. Home Sense carries a range of affordable Sand & Fog candles, a couple of my favourites are ‘White Pumpkin’ and ‘Honeycrisp Harvest’. They also stock them in pumpkin shaped glass jars so they’re a styling piece as-well as making the room smell amazing. A top tip is to combine scented candles with reed diffusers so the scent is double-layered and lingers even after the candle is blown out.

Scatter autumnal cushions and throws Scattering textured and warmer coloured cushions and throws instantly creates a cosy feel in any space. I am obsessed with chunky, knitted throws at this time of year in richer beiges, browns and burnt oranges such as this one from Dunelm to drape over the arm of a sofa or on the back of an armchair.

Switch up your tableware Inspire yourself by the season. Think earthy, natural, rustic textures and colours. Adding 9

Our Home favourite mugs to cosy up on the sofa with. If you haven’t got the surface space you can also create your station using a drinks cart. Towards Halloween, add some autumn foliage, fairy lights, a jar of your favourite chocolates and dot some mini pumpkins around your station to get into the spooky spirit.

Introduce some lanterns In Autumn when the weather starts getting gloomy I feel like the more candles the better. Adding lanterns is an elegant way of introducing ambience and style to any setting.

My top tips would be to look for traditional yet contemporary themed lanterns such as the ‘Browning’ lantern from Neptune. Place them next to the fireplace or on a side table in your living room where you often dim the lights.

The sleek, black colour ties in well with the Halloween season too!

Rustic Ceramics Autumn is all about natural materials and shapes. Organic shape clay ceramics create a sense of comfort and relaxation. Especially when placed directly next to other natural materials such as wool, linen or hessian. These can be incorporated into the dining room in the forms of plates, jugs and bowls but also in the living area or bedrooms for vases or lamps.

Decorate your Coffee Station Nothing says Autumn more than a pumpkin spice latte! A relatively different way to decorate for this cosy season is to create an autumn-inspired coffee station. Think exposed syrup bottles, a jar of coffee beans, a coffee machine, a decorative tray and your 11

Our Home some space. Pay attention to what surrounds the log storage, styling it near a rustic vase with dried blooms or a candle of a similar colour palette makes for a visually pleasing, cohesive scheme.

Hang a seasonal wreath Wreaths and Garlands aren’t just for Christmas!

Create the warmest welcome as you pull onto your drive by placing an autumnal wreath on your front door. I love the wild- twiggy style wreaths combined with the warm, rich oranges and browns from dried flowers. This laid back style sets the tone for your decor throughout the rest of the house. You can also incorporate some purples, teal and olive green for more of a transitional, bohemian style wreath as the summer fades into autumn.

Style some logs Adding log storage by the fire is a subtle way or decorating for the cosy autumn months and is becoming increasingly popular. Similar to the lantern style, I love how sleek and simple this iron log holder is from Cox & Cox. My top tips would be to use logs of different shapes and sizes for a rustic and organic effect. You can also store logs in any alcoves you may have or on shelves for some extra decor and to fill 12

West Midlands households must reduce energy bills before it’s too late Keeping the heat in this winter will be a priority and the good news for homeowners is that upgrading their windows, doors, or conservatory roof are the most instantly rewarding ways of energy-proofing a home.

Windows and exterior doors are vulnerable points for heat to escape or the cold to enter and for most houses, windows typically account for 10% of total heat lost. Modern energy efficient windows and exterior doors lock the heat inside a home while blocking the cold out, containing and conserving heat within the home in the winter.

With experts forecasting the October energy price cap could rise by up to 78%, taking the average annual bills to a whopping £3,500, the scale and extent of the challenges facing households is set to get even tougher.

All an existing conservatory with a polycarbonate roof will need to retain heat in the winter will be a cutting-edge replacement warm roof.

“The easiest way to insulate a house and make it more energy efficient is to replace single glazed or old existing double glazed windows with modern, A+ rated double, triple, or secondary glazing, frames and panels which allow more energy into a property than they lose, potentially saving as much as 30% on heating bills during the winter,” added Neal.

It means that homeowners need to think seriously about reducing their energy bills to cope with the price hike, according to Neal Harper, Managing Director of leading Midland’s home improvement company Wolverhampton Glass.

“The one-off government support payments only scratch the surface of soaring household energy bills, and with experts forecasting another 4% rise in energy prices in the first quarter of 2023, now is the perfect time for households to reduce their energy spending,” said Neal.

“Upgrading exterior doors and replacing a conservatory roof will also make sure homeowners don’t feel the pinch and have more money in their pocket for their family.”

Fashion ConScious Jade green is very sophisticated & tailoring is a massive part of the new season trends, blazers are going to be a staple for Autumn 22, whether its part of a suit or not, make sure you buy one you love & it will mix n match in your wardrobe, sling it on with jeans or a new season denim skirt. Trainers are still a massive part of our daily fix, from retro to chic leather that we wear with a dress.

The corset is a brand new key trend for the Autumn, I love this one from Zara. Shirts are oversized & mini bags are still a big trend.

This page is all about new shapes, I love the idea of the crop knit from stories.com, it's like a modern bolero, the oversized blazer has been around a while, but wearing over a cocktail dress is very stylish, the soft button front polo is very me, relaxed lux & an easy go to. The Aviator jacket is back & I love the shape of this one from stories.com, it's not obvious, so it wont date. It's a (chronic) skin condition that can cause a burning, itchy feeling and, in severe cases, a blistering rash. The palms of the hands, the sides of fingers, and the soles of the feet tend to be affected. The condition is most common in people between the ages of 20-30 yrs. But it can affect anyone!

Dry Skin People should take dry skin seriously; it can lead to other skin issues if it becomes unmanageable. All areas of the body can be affected by this common condition that affects people of all ages. It is often temporary or seasonal and will clear on its own. However, some people will need long-term support if it isn't clearing naturally. Suppose you cannot get the symptoms under control in a few weeks. In that case, it's better to seek professional advice as soon as possible.

In 2019 I was working long hours in the City of London. With a daily commute, busy lifestyle and regularly visiting my sick mum, I was tired. But, like many women, I ignored this and continued on. Then one night, I felt a painful lump in my tummy. It was a tumour. I was later diagnosed with stage IIIa ovarian cancer.

For me, ovarian cancer affected my whole body. My right leg bloated due to deep vein thrombosis and a clot on my lung was discovered. I had intense surgery to drain my kidneys and remove the tumour, as well as a total hysterectomy and many other procedures. I then underwent six rounds of chemotherapy.

Ovarian cancer changed my life, and with no screening in place it is essential that we are all armed with awareness of symptoms. This means the cancer can be found earlier, and outcomes are significantly improved. No one should die because of a late diagnosis.

Four out of five women cannot name the key symptom of ovarian cancer, bloating. This needs to change.

I’m writing to ask your readers to take just two minutes of their time to learn the symptoms and spread the word to their families and friends: persistent bloating, feeling full or having difficulty eating, tummy pain, and needing to wee more often or more urgently.

5 essential tips to get your plan off to a great start.

The season for proposals is fast upon us.

Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and not long after Valentine’s Day, is the three most popular dates in the year for engagements. Every a newly engaged couple will be filled with excitement as they start to arrange their special day. A wedding is one of the most important days in any young couple’s lives so there is plenty to do to get the day they want and the price they can afford. Everything from choosing suppliers such as photography, floral arrangements and wedding cars to making checklists and finding a venue will give the Bride and Groom ‘to be’ plenty of things that need to be researched and planned right up to the moment when they say “I Do“.

1) Set a Budget & Stick To It We all know that weddings can be very expensive and it is difficult when you find yourself wanting to add additional things, and therefore additional expense, as you near the big day.

Knowing from the start what you have to spend on the day is very important. Sit down with your partner and decide on a budget, but most importantly, stick to it!

Every professional Event Planner works from a budget so it is important to have the right mindset from the start. Most professional budgets do allow some funds for “extras” or unforeseen expenses that may crop up so it is a good idea to include some money within the budget for ‘must-haves’ so you have what you desire, without stretching the budget.

Find suppliers that fit with your style and make sure you are comfortable with their contracts and payment requirements.

3) Choose the Important Details Once the budget is in place and you are happy with the timeline it’s important to decide who will be attending. PANCETTA GNOCCHI Serves 6

Push through the potato ricer including the skins into a bowl and then add in the salt, flour and egg and work into a dough. Empty out onto a floured surface and knead like a bread dough for about minute. Don’t over do it. Keep a towel over the dough to keep it from drying out. Take a lump of dough and roll out into a long sausage shape about 1 inch diameter. Cut into 1 inch pieces and place on a tray until all cut.

Ingredients: 800g of baking potatoes 200g flour 1 tsp of Maldon sea salt 1 large egg 250g of pancetta cut into small slices 250g of mixed mushrooms such as shiitake, penny bun, oyster etc…

Handful of baby leaf spinach 1 red chilli 4 garlic cloves Flat leaf parsley leaves 100g butter 50ml EV olive oil Cracked black pepper or mill Nutmeg Good quality parmesan

Place the pancetta pieces on a baking tray and cook in the oven until crispy.

When the pancetta is almost ready melt the butter in your pan and add in the mushrooms roughly chopped with the garlic roughly chopped and finely sliced chilli. Once the mushrooms are browning add the gnocchi and keep moving to coat the gnocchi with the butter, browning on all sides taking about 10 minutes. Now add in the spinach and flat leaf parsley.

When ready add the pancetta and more spinach. Add a dash of water or veg stock to help steam the gnocchi and fast forward the process a little.

When you’re ready to serve share the gnocchi equally between 6 bowls, drizzle with olive oil and peel slices of parmesan over the top. Finish with cracked black pepper and a few gratings of nutmeg.

New opponents will be Newport ( Salop), three Bristol clubs ( Dings Crusaders, Clifton and Old Redcliffians), Weston-SuperMare Hornets, Barnstaple, Exeter University and Redruth whom we last met in National One. So, all change. We had two pre-season fixtures at home in August against Dorking and Swansea. Our opening fixture is away at Redruth on September 3rd and our first home game is against Loughborough Students on September 10th.

Keeping Your Pets Safe This Autumn

As the leaves begin to fall, the clocks go back and the dark nights start to draw in. Our attention turns to Halloween and then Bonfire night just a few days later, with it comes chocolate and sweets, elaborate costumes, parties, bonfires and fireworks. For many people this is a time of fun and excitement, especially if you have young children, but for a lot of pets and wildlife this is a particularly dangerous and distressing time.

Fireworks can be very scary for some pets, loud bangs, flashing lights and other unfamiliar sounds, fireworks actually create a vibration, humans aren’t as aware of this but animals can feel them and it can be terrifying for some of the more sensitive souls. Keep your pets indoors, make them a little den, a safe and comfortable place to hide. You can also turn the TV up slightly and close blinds and curtains to help take their mind off what’s going on outside. It’s a good idea to feed your pet before it gets dark and if you have a dog that needs to go out in the garden make sure you stay with them, not only to reassure them but to keep them safe. Make sure you check that gates are closed as dogs may bolt if scared and if you are opening doors ensure that your pet is securely inside and can’t dart out.

There are several things that you can do to keep your pets safe and make this time less stressful for them. Chocolate and other Halloween treats are very yummy and it's tempting to share them with our lovely pets especially if they are looking up at you with those adorable eyes, but this is not a good idea, chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals. Many sweets, cakes and nut butters contain a sweetener called Xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs and cats and can cause liver failure and ultimately death. What’s most concerning is that Xylitol is being used more and more in peanut butter and other nut butters, a lot of pet parents like to use peanut butter in toys for their pets so it is imperative to always check the ingredients. There are many recipes for pet friendly treats on the internet, they can be really easy to make and use lovely healthy, natural tasty ingredients. Why not bake some special Halloween/ Bonfire treats for your gorgeous pets, you can have lots of fun making them, cutting them in to spooky shapes and coming up with some fun names for them.

If you are building a bonfire, remember to keep the wildlife in mind, don’t built on top of leaves as there may be hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding underneath them. Ideally build the bonfire just before it’s lit to ensure that there are no animals hiding inside it. It’s not just wildlife to consider as cats and other pets can sneak in there too, if the bonfire is left unsupervised at all check it again before lighting. Keep everyone safe and enjoy the seasonal celebrations.

Homer, author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, described Bodrum as ‘the land of eternal blue’ and prior to the outbreak of Covid19, I was most fortunate to visit this popular Turkish market town located on the south coast of the Bodrum Peninsular at the entrance to the Gulf of Gokova, and known as the pearl of the Aegean Riviera. The Mediterranean climate attracts visitors from all over the world and for those keen to explore, a rich and colourful kaleidoscope of history and culture awaits.

Although I was tempted to recline on my ultra comfortable sun lounger for the entire day I was also drawn to explore further afield, and made my way to the Bodrum Amphitheatre, partly built during the reign of King Mausolus and completed during the Roman era. I wandered through the Myndos Gate, also constructed during the reign of King Mausolus, and as I passed through, I imagined the scenes of battle led by Alexander the Great.

Intent on practising my bartering skills, I headed for Bodrum’s textile bazaar, held on a Tuesday, and I was overwhelmed with displays of the most colourful carpets and fabrics. After accepting the vendor’s kind invitation to join him for a Turkish coffee, I purchased a comfy pair of leather sandals at a bargain price.

To sample some Turkish delights, I made a reservation at the restaurant Liman Koftecisi, a well known family run business, located near Bodrum’s marina, which serves the most delicious Kofte meatballs, a house speciality.

After my sumptuous feast, I took a stroll along the marina beside the glittering turquoise sea and whilst breathing in the fresh sea air I remembered Homer’s quote and it was clear to me that Bodrum is indeed ‘the land of eternal blue’.

I think it is pretty fair to comment that when you have sold over 18 million versions of a car since its debut in 1975, then you have to be doing something right, the Polo by Volkswagen, with over 1½ million sales in the UK alone, are certainly doing something correct, writes Bob Hickman.

If a Style Polo is one of those derivatives that ticks the box the colour options that are now available are really worth a trip to the dealership to have a look. What about a Smokey Grey or a Reef Blue, Kings Red, Vibrant Violet, all colours to test the palette of the discerning driver.

The Polo has new front and rear styling, LED headlights have been incorporated together with a horizontally extended rear light cluster, it all gives a more pleasing aesthetic appearance. I always say, is if something isn’t broken, don’t mend it.

All of the Polo’s have now been fitted with a latest version of what Volkswagen call the Visual Cockpit, this display screen recognises menus and information to keep everything in the driver’s line of sight.

Polos are now available with a choice of a 5-speed manual or as a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The Style test vehicle was equipped with a 1-litre, 3-cylinder, 999cc engine, which puts out quite a healthy 95bhp and driving through a 5-speed manual gearbox. Fuel consumptions are quoted in the vicinity of 53mpg, and in a week of varied motoring I

Our Motoring To drive the vehicle is one of ease, you settle in behind the wheel, adjustability is good for the seat and steering column and even rear passengers won’t complain about the amount of space, if you are like me at 6ft they are generous. I also found access to the rear of the vehicle quite useful and easy.

The driving dynamics of the vehicle was of a comfortable companion, the 3 cylinder 95 bhp engine was more than sufficient for the diminutive Polo, a 0-60 in 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 116 mph shows the little engine Polo is no slouch.

The driver has assistance in abundance, you will appreciate the parking sensors both front and rear, the dynamic roadside display system and the hill hold function is a very useful piece of equipment, the stop/start function was a willing companion at all times.

Without doubt Volkswagen with this latest generation of the Polo have once again ticked all the boxes.

The basic on the road price of my derivative was £21,890, but with the odd options that Volkswagen included it brought the price to £23,800. Volkswagen give a 3-year or 60,000 miles warranty, which includes 3-year paint and 12-year anti-rot protection, and 1-Year Volkswagen Assist is available.

Safety has not been compromised at all, there is an Isofix fitting for the child seat on the 2 rear car seats and also the front passenger seat. There is a plethora of air bags inside, to include curtain air bags, centre air bags, front seat, side impact air bags, the safety features are extensive.

Sometimes I read an investment article that makes my blood boil. Those that I’m talking about, rank funds and offer ‘dog’ lists. They would be laughable if they did not have such a potentially serious impact on investors’ wealth.

In the case of systematic investors, it is the decision to own overweight positions of value stocks, smaller companies and more profitable companies, as the empirical evidence points to higher expected returns that may be captured over the sorts of horizons investors hold.

Despite their caveats, these lists influence the decisions of many DIY investors (those who do not seek advice) and can also unsettle sensible long-term investors if they see a fund on the list that’s in their portfolio for good reason.

If you happen to come across one of these lists or you see one quoted in the Sunday papers, remember fund ranking and ‘dog’ lists can be injurious to your wealth. Ignore the barking.

I have no problem calling out the all-toocommon poor value for money funds, but the methodology used to identify ‘dogs’ is blunt to the point of being unhelpful.
