is now the right time to be investing in renewable energy? Nearly a quarter of a million homeowners in the UK installed solar panels in 2023. With energy prices continuing to rise, is it any wonder that more people are turning to alternative options like solar power? As technology improves, the cost of basic solar systems has come down and there are more options to choose from. The right solar system or standalone battery won’t just bring your bills down, they can, if designed correctly, earn you money back as well. Our forecasting software can give you a realistic idea of your potential savings, based on your address and allowing for the unpredictable British weather as well. For example - £1000 in the bank may make £35 a year in interest. £1000 invested into solar energy could save and return £150-£250 per year, for 20-30 years. Investing in free energy generated by the sun is more a case of when, not if! So, how do you choose the right installer? One of the problems homeowners face is finding the right installer and system for their property. Solar panel technology can feel bewildering. Do you need planning permission? Is your roof suitable, and positioned to get the most sunshine? Is the right finance deal available? Here’s the good news.

Our Home Accent Wall:

It’s still January while I’m writing this article but I love to see all the spring flowers creeping into the shops and my spring bulbs are popping up in the garden too.

Paint one wall in your living room or bedroom to create a focal point. This warm and inviting colour will instantly brighten the space and serve as a backdrop for creative expression.

March is a good time to start switching up our home accessories and to bring in the fresher touches of spring into your home. Here are my top 5 tips to make sure you have lots of springtime loveliness in your home and also my advice on how to add in the Pantone colour of the year Peach Fuzz.

Statement Furniture: Integrate furniture pieces in Peach Fuzz, such as a sofa, accent chairs, or a coffee table. These key elements can add a pop of positivity to the room while maintaining a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Pantone Colour of the year

Soft Furnishings:

Decorating your home with the 2024 Pantone colour "Peach Fuzz" can infuse a cheerful and positive vibe while promoting a sense of wellbeing. Here are some home decor inspiration ideas. Soft, sweet and just a bit tart, peach and apricot are the dominant shades in design trends for spring 2024.

Incorporate Peach Fuzz through soft furnishings like throws, pillows, blankets, and curtains. These accents can be easily swapped out or updated, allowing for a flexible and ever-evolving expression of creativity.

9

Our Home

Artwork and Wall Decor:

Colourful Accessories:

Choose artwork or wall decor that features: Peach Fuzz tones. This could be paintings, prints, or even DIY art projects that align with your personal style. Abstract and vibrant pieces can enhance the overall creativity of the space.

Use Peach Fuzz-coloured accessories such as vases, candles, and decorative bowls to sprinkle the colour throughout the room. These small touches can make a big impact on the overall aesthetic.

Lighting:

Plants and Greenery:

Opt for lighting fixtures in warm tones to enhance the Peach Fuzz colour scheme. Pendant lights, floor lamps, or table lamps with soft, warm light can contribute to a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Introduce indoor plants with green foliage to complement the Peach Fuzz colour. The combination of soft peach and natural green creates a refreshing and harmonious ambiance, promoting a sense of wellbeing. 10

Our Home Creative

Remember, the key is to have fun and let your personal style shine through. Feel free to mix and match elements to create a space that reflects your unique taste and promotes a positive and creative atmosphere.

Workspaces: If you have a home office or a designated creative space, incorporate the Peach in the decor. This could include desk accessories, shelving, or even an accent wall to inspire creativity and self-expression.

Spring Décor

Textured Fabrics:

Homes are a place to heal, to escape and this spring/summer season we want a home to comfort and nourish us. Changing up your interiors to suit the changing of the seasons can create a great feeling in your home.

Experiment with textured fabrics in Peach Fuzz, such as a shaggy rug or a textured accent wall. These elements add depth and interest to the space while maintaining a welcoming feel.

Spring Trends

Mix with Neutrals:

My top 3 spring trends to look out for are prints and patterns, statement florals & warm colours and hues.

Pair Peach with neutral tones like whites, greys, or soft beige to create a balanced and sophisticated look. This combination ensures that the room remains visually appealing and versatile.

Prints and patterns are making their way into our homes and are back in style for 2024. Floral prints and patterns are a classic spring statement, try to incorporate them into your textiles, wallpaper and art. Also decorating your home using warm hues such as greens, browns and terracotta will add a sense of depth into your home this season.

Colours Springtime is when blossom appears, grass grows, and spring bulbs flower. Choose complimentary colours that bring that feeling of nature into your home.

Fabrics Spring is all about creating an airy feel to your space, so lighter fabrics are a good way to achieve this. Switch out the fur throw and knitted wool and add in linen and cotton alternatives.

Home scents Spring scents switch out your wintery warming candles and for spring opt for lighter, subtler candle scents in floral and natural 11

Greeny Plants are the best way to create a fresh feel into your home, remember to tend to them as they will most likely need a good dust, trim and removal of any dead leaves. Always give them a good drink if the soil has gone dry.

Worcester Buoys – They Did It!!! “Worcester Buoys”, in their herculean quest. We take our hat off to the Buoys’ parents, Mark & Sue, Kate & Gordon, who have been unfailingly supportive and who can now relax a little for the first time in a month and a half! We also thank the many GreenThumb customers, friends and colleagues for their support and for the many donations they have provided.

They did it! Finally, after 40 days 16 hours and 20 minutes of rowing their small boat Pegasus, the Worcester Buoys made it to the far side of The Atlantic. They arrived in Antigua in the early hours of last Tuesday morning on 23rd January and were met by a large group of family and friends amidst much celebration and no small amount of relief! The challenge was to row 3,000 miles across The Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua. For good reason the race is called the World’s Toughest Row. They wanted to do this for Acorns Children’s Hospice and raise £100,000 in order to help Acorns carry on with the outstanding work they do in providing specialist care for very sick children across the West Midlands. Their drive was for the memory of their friend and neighbour Jack Dyer and his family, who were supported by Acorns.

The total raised by The Buoys is now over £100,000 and continues to rise. If you are interested in what the Buoys have done, or would like to donate then please go to www.worcesterbuoys.com or www. justgiving.com/fundraising/worcesterbuoys or www.worldstoughestrow.com. You can also follow the Worcester Buoys on Instagram. Well done to Acorns! Well done to the Worcester Buoys!

PowisVets Welcome chocolate truffles and needed an emergency visit to evacuate his stomach. He then had activated charcoal administered to help reduce absorption of the toxins.

All of us at PowisVets would like to take the opportunity to welcome you to the first of a regular series of articles we are hoping will shine a light on the day to day work of our dedicated team here at the practice.

If you think your dog has eaten some chocolate or Hot Cross Buns then phone your vet straight away. Try and give the vet an idea of how much chocolate and what type of chocolate they have eaten. The darker the chocolate the higher the risk of poisoning. Once we have this information we can decide on the best way to help your pet and get them better.

Spring is in the air and here at PowisVets we are all settled in at our new, purpose built premises. We have been serving the community around us in Stourbridge for over 50 years and in the last 12 months Pippa and Saul have been working hard organising the building of our new clinic. PowisVets are delighted so share all the wonderful facilities that this fantastic building brings to our patients and the team that cares for them.

Buffy was feeling pretty sorry for themself after his treatment so we are hoping he has learnt his lesson and sticks to doggy friendly treats from now on!

We would love you to come and join us this spring at PowisVets and meet some of our wonderful team. We hope to introduce you to some of our most memorable patients during the course of these articles. With Easter approaching, we are reminded of our naughty patients who partake in illicit holiday chocolate and the occasional hot cross bun. Some are even repeat offenders! Unfortunately as tasty as these human treats are they are quite toxic to our pets. Buffy’s owners will have to be extra vigilant this year after he helped himself to some dark 26

myths and

misconceptions muscle group has absolutely no correlation with ‘burning the fat away’ in the same area. This applies to the abdominal area of the body and every other one. Remember this analogy: starting with a full tank of fuel in your car, you can’t ensure that you only burn the fuel from the middle part of the tank. It will simply deplete the more frequently, the faster and the longer you drive. So with the human body, your fat stores (fuel), will deplete gradually, slowly and uniformly, in direct relation to the frequency, intensity and duration of your exercising.

The unregulated fitness industry has complicated, confused, and even misled every one of us. The relentless pursuit of the onesystem-fits-all approach of the last 40 years has served only to produce so much conflicting information and advice that most individuals don’t know which way to turn when deciding on exercise, and even the most basic of principles is misinterpreted or misunderstood. This has led to an ever-growing number of myths and misconceptions existing in the exercise world, muddying the waters, preventing scientific progress and holding us back.

You simply can’t ‘spot-reduce’ fat. 2. Running is bad for your knees. This is not true. One of the key characteristics of the human being is that we are bipeds, having evolved to stand, walk and run on two legs. It is a fundamental part of our existence. “Numerous studies have shown that runners have lower rates of knee osteoarthritis than sedentary people,” according to runnersworld.com. Why, then, do so many people believe this myth? The answer is very simple but still misunderstood. I will explain the complexities and importance of human biomechanics – the way we stand, walk and run. Technique, posture, foot contact, knee angles, hip/pelvis position and spinal position all dictate the

Let’s explore the first 10 of the most common, in a little more detail; 1. Exercising the abdominal muscles reduces belly fat. This is absolute nonsense. Muscle and fat are completely different entities. Exercising a particular muscle or 29

This is a very personal chain reaction of movement, and unfortunately most individuals have less than perfect mechanics that can, and often do, put undue stress through the knee joint. So an individual’s poor biomechanics can be bad for their knees, but running doesn’t have a direct effect. With good biomechanics, running can have very important benefits for an individual’s knee muscles and joints.

body outside its comfort zone. Exercising to the required fatigue levels ensures that, during the body’s rest periods, it recovers and super-compensates for the exercise that has been done. This is simply how the body works and progresses. 6. Workouts should always be one hour long. Again, simply not true. Exercise response is about consistent quality, not solely about quantity and volume. Remember one of my top tips – stretching your hamstrings for 60 seconds each, and/or 30 seconds of back mobility every day, could potentially cure the world of back pain.

This is one of the fundamental reasons why I have formulated my 100,000 system – I want to increase knowledge and understanding of the importance of mechanics and how to address them throughout the entire body. 3. Exercise turns fat into muscle. Not true.

7. You can outrun a bad diet. This is not strictly true.

As I’ve already stated, fat and muscle are completely different tissues, and one cannot morph into another. Exercise can only decrease one (fat) and increase another (muscle).

If you’re young and naturally slim or lean, with a fast metabolism, huge quantities of exercise can appear to be achieving the desired results, but don’t be blindsided. Please be aware that bad, unhealthy, fatty junk-food diets will destroy your health and build up fat somewhere in your body – for example in the form of deep fat around your vital organs – even if it’s not being stored where it would be more visible, just under your skin.

4. Core stability is everything. This modernday mantra is not true. Many individuals don’t fully understand what core stability is, what it does or how to exercise it correctly. Devoting too much time to simply exercising the abdominal area in a one-dimensional manner simply doesn’t address the issue. It requires a multifaceted approach which, when executed correctly, is a very important component of exercise but no more important than many others. Again, I have built my 100,000 system to include all the vital components that the human body requires to function fluidly and efficiently.

8. Sweating equals results. Again, this needs clarification. Some exercising may make us sweat, some may not, and we all sweat at different rates and to a different degree. The scientific truth, is that, relative to your starting levels, you will sweat sooner after starting exercise, and you will sweat more, when you exercise continually/ regularly for weeks or months. So monitoring your sweat rates can be a good indication of your progress.

5. No pain, no gain. How many of us continually hear this untruth? ‘Pain’ is not the correct word to associate with anything that relates to exercise. That said, to induce the exercise adaptations you’re striving for, you must exercise frequently, intensely and with enough variety to encourage your

9. Stretching before exercise is crucial. Similarly, this needs clarification. The benefit depends on the type of stretching, 30

Our Health what you’re stretching, why you’re stretching and how you’re stretching. It also depends on what exercise is to follow. Let’s be clear: stretching, both statically and dynamically, is very important to the human body and important for muscles, nerves and the entire skeleton. Stretching performed correctly, at the correct times and in the correct balance, can and will be highly beneficial to your body.

All of these myths and misconceptions have served to misrepresent exercise, to cloud opinion and understanding. They have led to exercise becoming a guessing game with individuals simply following others, not really knowing if they are doing things correctly. It has been a major contributing factor to explain why exercise has been, and still is, so confusing to so many.

10. Lifting weights makes women bulk up. Unless this is an individual’s objective for their exercise, it’s not generally correct.

I really hope that this helps to answer some of the most common questions that I receive every day. In the next article I will address more of these really important myths and misconceptions. For more details and further information about my ‘secret’ exercise programmes, that I have used with all my celebrity clients, please visit; thefatherfigureoffitness.com, or to purchase my new book; The Father Figure of Fitness, please visit amazon UK. If you have any specific questions, or would like me to cover a certain topic in subsequent editions, please contact me at; info@thefatherfigureoffitness.com.

Building muscle takes highly targeted exercise over an extended period – months or years – and therefore it’s almost impossible to attain too much musculature without recognising it. It is also important to emphasise here how quickly (three or four days) muscles can atrophy (diminish in size), so scaling down muscular exercises can very quickly rectify any overdevelopment that may happen.

Mental Ill Health Seasonal Blues Hilary Sims - Life Balance

As a counsellor, I see a pattern in the problems clients present to me, throughout the year, that could almost be looked at as being seasonal.

workforce, even more will see counselling as a social norm. That being said, the importance of counselling should not ever be underestimated. While it’s becoming increasingly socially acceptable to seek personal help that shouldn’t lessen the impact of counselling or make conditions that counselling or therapy treat, any less important.

It’s not quite as black and white as people suffering from depression in the winter months, anxiety in the spring, couples’ issues in the summer and teenager problems in the autumn, but there does appear to be trends associated with seasons.

The differing array of symptoms and conditions require different methods of counselling. These methods used are more down to the individual needs of the patient rather than the condition they present with. Some patients might respond better to CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) others, SFT (Solution Focused Therapy) or Humanistic Counselling.

For example, the new school year in September and the following few months, particularly for 14 to 18 year olds, seems to bring a larger concentration of stress and anxiety related conditions. Christmas particularly and just after, family and relationship concerns. April, and we see a trend forming around depression illnesses (this also coincides with the highest numbers in a month, for suicide)*

Seeing a counsellor doesn't hold the stigma it used to, thankfully. When I was growing up, if someone saw a counsellor, it was a sign of weakness, particularly if you were a man and while there is still a stigma attached to seeking mental health help, it’s much less that it was.

Thankfully, we have seen a change in that way of thinking as generations come and go, meaning that for some, in fact, probably for most, counselling is now seen as a form of selfdevelopment, and in many social settings, it's encouraged. As our next generation hits the 34

Useful Info

Start by checking the chicken thigh for any little bones and then cut into bite size pieces. Coat with the smoked paprika, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Start this the day before for better infusing of flavours.

Prep time = 20 minutes Cooking time = 2 hours Marinating time = 1 day

Dice the chorizo into small chunks and fry off on a lowish heat to bring out the oil. Once the chorizo starts to brown a little add in the red onion and soften, add some of the tomato oil if needed. Now add in the garlic and sautee until softened and then add in the tinned chopped tomatoes and allow to simmer until thick and everything has come together to form a nice rich sauce. Stir in the juice of 1 lemon when ready to serve.

Ingredients CHICKEN 1200G OF CHICKEN THIGH 2 OR 3 TBSP OF SMOKED PAPRIKA (SWEET OR SPICY) 100ML OF OLIVE OIL 1 TBSP OF BALSAMIC VINEGAR MALDON SMOKED SEA SALT SAUCE 200G OF CHORIZO 2 LARGE RED ONIONS DICED 6 GARLIC CLOVES SLICED /DICED/PUREED 200G OF SUN-BLUSH TOMATOES 1 400G TIN OF CHOPPED TOMATOES 50ML OF TOMATO OIL FROM THE SUNBLUSH 1 ROASTED PEPPER 1 LEMON

Whilst the sauce is simmering away sprinkle the chicken with sea salt and cook in the oven at 180ºc for about 30 minutes and then into the sauce with adding the sunblush tomatoes. To make the pesto simply roast the chillies for about 8 minutes and then put all the ingredients in a food processor and blitz either to a chunky or smooth consistency depending on your preference. Steam the beans until they are no longer squeaky when you bite into them and allow to cool before tossing with the pesto. Serve in a salad bowl and top with crumbled feta cheese.

Never give up on your dreams Football has been a tremendous passion of mine since childhood. However, as a young girl, I struggled to find opportunities to play within a female team due to the scarcity of fellow female enthusiasts. During primary school, I often joined the boys during break time for a kick around and even became part of the boys' school team. It wasn't until I was around 14 that I discovered an all-female football team in my local area. I decided to attend a trial training session, and from that moment, I was hooked.

some players departed due to university commitments, and unfortunately, the team broke down. Despite my manager's efforts to start a new team, my enthusiasm for the sport began to wane over the following months, marking a bittersweet end to a chapter of my life dedicated to the beautiful game. After stumbling upon a post from Charl Dolan, a football teammate, about a women's rugby team (she also played for) seeking players, I initially hesitated to act. Yet, feeling a need for change, I reached out to Charl and decided to give it a try.

Finally, I felt like I belonged, no longer feeling like an outsider. Over the course of three incredible seasons, I experienced numerous unforgettable moments and made lasting memories. One I wont forget is we were playing a pivotal cup game, we were trailing 2-1 behind, with time running out a fortunate mistake from the opposition granted us an indirect free kick metres from the goal line. Stepping up to take this kick and eleven determined defenders stood on the line, I knew I had to deliver. With a mix of determination and hope, I struck the ball, eyes closed, praying for success. Moments later, amidst ecstatic celebrations, it was clear— the ball found the net! Despite the odds, the game went to penalties and we won. This unforgettable match will forever stay with me.

Despite my initial lack of knowledge about rugby, joining the Panthers has been transformative. They've become my second family, providing unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement. Thanks to the exceptional coaching and management, I've grown into a player I never imagined I could be. The Stourbridge rugby community holds a special place in my heart, and I owe immense gratitude to Charl Dolan for introducing me to this extraordinary team. Stourbridge Panthers, you have captured my heart! Written by: Izzy Taylor-McGill If you’re interested in playing women’s rugby contact The Panthers team manager Darren & come along & try for free. DUNE: PART II (12A)

KUNG FU PANDA 4 (U)

DIRECTOR: DENIS VILLENEUVE

DIRECTOR: MIKE MITCHELL

Starring: Timothee Chalamet, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler

Starring: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman and Akwafina

The spellbinding film event of the Spring is the followup to the science-fiction epic Dune (2021). Timothee Chalamet returns as the hero, Paul, continuing his revenge quest against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Director Denis Villeneuve masses a plethora of stunning visuals crafted only for the cinema and a star-studded cast, including Elvis’ (2022) Austin Butler, who embodies a ruthless villain role.

Everyone’s favourite Kung-Fu fighting, dumplingloving panda returns for a new adventure of laughs and action. So far, the Kung-Fu Panda series has produced exceptional animated gems in its first and second outings, yet the third one (from 2016) seemed half the effort. Hopefully, this will recapture the magic with some new faces such as Oscar-winner, Ke Huy Quan.

THE FALL GUY (12A)

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (12)

DIRECTOR: DAVID LEITCH

DIRECTOR: ADAM WINGARD

Starring: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt

Starring: Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry

The Fall Guy sees a world-weary stuntman (Barbie’s Gosling) thrust into a dangerous espionage adventure to find the star of his girlfriend’s (Oppenheimer’s Blunt) movie, who has gone missing. Placing a stuntman as the protagonist gives action movies a much-needed love letter, celebrating the thrills of cinematic spectacle and effects and the efforts made to achieve them.

We previously saw the Titans, King Kong and Godzilla, clash on the small screens of streaming services back in 2020. Now, audiences are treated to the grand spectacle of the cinema screenings in this sequel, where the two monsters now ally against a common enemy. The sensational destructive action will not disappoint.

A DIARY OF EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES SPRING DIARY 2024

AFTERNOON TEA AT DAVENPORT HOUSE The enchanting Davenport House is the perfect backdrop for a traditional winter treat of delicious food, complimented by an array of entertainment to set the mood for an unforgettable experience. Invited by gracious hosts Lizzie and Joseph, Nick and Royston joined friends for a fabulous afternoon tea. Arriving at a candlelit entrance, they were welcomed into the spectacular Grand Hall by the in-house pianist, creating a captivating ambiance. Seated in the beautiful Drawing Room, they enjoyed a selection of finely cut sandwiches, scones and pastries, accompanied by a few glasses of champagne. The magical ballet performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ enraptured the audience and followed by an amazing singer, who inspired Royston for a spin around the room. With a soft snowfall as the guests departed, this added the perfect finishing touch to a splendid afternoon.

CAROLYN HUGHES PR ANNUAL LUNCH Invited by friend Kerry Farley to join them at the hottest lunch event in Liverpool, the Carolyn Hughes PR Annual Lunch, they joined over 300 guests to this celebrity bash to raise funds supporting families in need this winter. This glamorous event was held at The Hilton, hosted by journalist and radio host Peter Price, followed by entertainment including Gary Baker, Conor McKenna and a set by top DJ, Simon Ross. The fun continued later at the PIMA bar for the afterparty. Guests included Jamie and Nicole Carragher, Coleen Rooney, Danniella Lloyd and Davina Taylor. A WEEKEND IN PARIS As a very special Christmas present, friends Wes and Pete gifted Nick and Royston an unforgettable winter weekend in ‘Gay Paris’! Travelling first class on the Eurostar, the journey began in style with a delicious lunch, champagne and fine wine. Staying at the fabulous Le Cinq Codet Hotel, this stunning city offered them grandeur and sophistication with world-class restaurants, luxury shopping and the hottest nightlife. The first evening was at the super-chic restaurant, Girafe. Boasting a killer seafood selection, the stunning ‘hushed décor’ interior with its outside terrace, gave the perfect outlook to the Eiffel Tower. Kong Bar and Restaurant was next on the weekend agenda. Perched above the Parisian rooftops, with views of the Seine and the Pont Neuf, this offered a fusion of French elegance and Japanese exoticism. The weekend was incredible, filled with fun, laughter and surrounded by beautiful people and fabulous places. Thank you.

CLAIRE CAUDWELL’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Sixteen close friends gathered at her beautiful home Broughton Hall in Staffordshire, to celebrate Claire’s birthday. Nick and Royston joined Dawn and Ashley Ward who had flown in from Dubai for the private dinner party. Visit Crete for a glimpse into the Grecian way of life by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist Matala courtesy of Y Skoulas

For those considering a taste of the Grecian lifestyle, Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, is characterised by tranquil secluded beaches, a majestic mountain range, deep valleys, gorges, fertile plateaus and caves. A fascinating history, a rich and diverse culture, and an extensive choice of attractions are reflected in the ever- increasing numbers of visitors from afar.

uncovered and restored the ruins of Knossos. The ancient palace, the origin of the legend of the labyrinth, dates back to 2000 BC and was the home of King Minos and the mythical Minotaur. To take a look into the Ottoman Empire’s past, I took a stroll along Vernardos Street, and as the Neratze mosque comes into view I was mesmerised by the striking three domes on the roof and the highest minaret in the area. I visited Fortezza, the Venetian fort built in 1573 A.D. and embarked on a leisurely walk through the central entrance, along a dark arcade into the sunlit interior and then through the building that housed the artillery. I wandered around the small amphitheatre and the Sultan Ibrahim temple and mosque, and then into the 19th century Church of Aghia Ekaterini, continuing along the narrow pathway and at the eastern end there is a small Russian church, evidence of the presence of Russian troops during 1897 to 1909.

The most popular sites for intrepid explorers include the ruins of Knossos, the Venetian fortress of Rethymno, a magnificent Byzantine monastery, ornate mosques, and Heraklion, also known as Irakleio, the vibrant capital. The first known syllabic script of the Greek language discovered in the 19th century at Knossos, is prominently featured on the exterior of the building and again along the plush corridors within. The theme of natural stone, water and wood is predominant throughout the property, creating a serene atmosphere and providing the perfect spot for weary explorers to rejuvenate.

If you intend to spend the time relaxing in the sunshine and perhaps you share my penchant for an afternoon snooze, the soft sandy beach and the gentle waves of the warm Mediterranean Sea lapping the shore of Matala bay, provides the ideal spot.

I was captivated by the ruins of Knossos, once the capital of Minoan Crete, and the ancient Palace of Knossos, which attract the highest number of visitors to Crete. In the early 1900’s Sir Arthur Evans, the British archaeologist, 54

Easter a spring holiday with religious origins In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover, which is the celebration to commemorate the liberation of Jews from the slavery of the Egyptians in ancient times.

The exact origins of day are unknown. Pagan folklore claims the word Easter is derived Eastre (or Eostre), the Anglo Saxon goddess of spring. A festival called Eastre was held during the spring Equinox to honour her. Eastre’s earth symbol was a hare, also known as symbol of fertility and perhaps the origins of the Easter bunny.

As with most religious and historic festivals Easter has now become a commercial venture.

The spring Equinox is a time where the earth renews itself after the winter. The egg is widely used as a symbol of new life and re-birth and so became a symbol of Easter.

Did you know, over 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made each year.? This year Easter Sunday falls on Sunday 31st March. Most of us will enjoy a 4 day holiday from Good Friday 29th March to Easter bank holiday Monday 1st April - and most of us will enjoy the time with family and friends eating far too much chocolate!

In the Christian faith Easter has come to mean the celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the tomb, three days after his crucifixion. It is the oldest and most significant holiday in the church year. Easter Sunday comes after Lent, a 40 day period of fasting. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week. In reference to the white clothing worn by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English.

Our Time of Year

Mothering Sunday an ancient celebration The origin of Mother’s Day go back to the ancient Greek and Romans.

Historically, churchgoers worshipped on Sundays at their nearest parish, known as their ‘daughter’ church. Centuries ago it was deemed important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year.

The Greeks held an annual spring festival and used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

The return to the ‘mother’ church became an occasion for family reunions. Its a popular belief that this return is what led to the tradition of Mothering Sunday.

Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The celebration lasted for three days and included parades and games.

The custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, was celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom and commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales.

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent and this year falls on 10th March. Its often referred to as Mothers’ Day, but that is in fact, a completely different American festival celebrated at a different time of year.

Today this special day, commercial or not, is a chance to reflect and give thanks to our mothers and is a particularly poignant time to remember loved ones no longer with us.

Traditionally, it was a day when employees, who were staying away from home, such as domestic servants, were given a day off and encouraged to visit their mother and family. 57

Volkswagen Golf Style 3 adults only at a push.

I don’t think there is anyone that has not heard of a Volkswagen Golf now in its 8th incarnation and with over 35 million sold it has to be in the top 3 of the world’s best-selling cars and there is little doubt that Volkswagen Golf is one of those cars that is everything to everyone, writes Bob Hickman.

There is an absolute plethora of engine derivatives to choose from with a Golf, from the diminutive 1-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine up to a 150bhp diesel. Although diesel is a dirty word for some people the modern diesel engine emissions are so low that the diesel has to be worth a glance.

The interior of the Golf is one of a companion, the quality of the cabin is excellent, it will certainly be a pleasant addition to your driving history.

The particular derivative that the Volkswagen Press Office sent to me was a 150bhp 1.5-litre turbo charged petrol engine. A very mild hybrid system was in operation as well and this utilises a battery and self-charging system so you don’t need an umbilical cord the engine does the work for you. I was particularly impressed with the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, it was uncanny that it always knew the right gear for the situation you had whether in twisty lanes, in and around town or stop start traffic, it really is a magically piece of equipment. Volkswagen claim the Golf had a top speed of 139 mph and a 0-60 gallop in marginally over 8 seconds. The CO emissions are on the low side at 128g/km.

In keeping with most manufacturers there Is a huge touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard and a lot of clever technology. Sadly, I am not a lover of this new technology I still like instrumentation controls on the steering wheel so I don’t have to avert my eyes too often especially when on a motorway and travelling at motorway speed, but it seems to be the way most manufacturers are going. There is plenty of passenger space, driver and front passenger have plenty of leg, head and shoulder room and in the rear, 2 adults comfortable, 3 children absolutely wonderful, 60

Our Motoring I do like, which was an additional extra, was the heads-up display, that you look through the window screen and you have a display telling you the speed you are doing and so the current speed limit of that particular road. The rear-view camera was another additional extra but it is one that I would tick the box if this vehicle was on my shopping list.

As you would expect with a vehicle of this pedigree the handling and performance were outstanding, in and around town it was easy, the power steering was sufficiently weighted so as not to make it too light and flighty, out on country roads it was a delight, the vehicle hugged the road, it steered well, it braked exceptionally well and even over poor surfaces the Golf suspension swallowed it all up. It is a very quiet car and is very pleasant to be cocooned in there was little if any wind noise from the exterior of the vehicle and I could not detect any tyre noise or rumble from that aspect.

The basic price for the Golf Style 1.5-litre eTSi 150 PS7 was £31,800, however the very nice people at Volkswagen had put on several extras to the vehicle. In addition to the rearview camera and Heads Up display there was a huge panoramic sunroof, a spare wheel had been incorporated, a winter pack with headlight washers and heating, heated front seats all added an extra few pounds to the equation making the on the road price as tested at £37,490.

There is very little to criticise about the Golf, it has excellent storage spaces, the doors have an aperture to store a bottle of pop, the cup holders are well designed and can grip either large or small bottles. Luggage capacity is generous, with 381litres capacity, this actually translates to a golf bag, pushchair and or 2 suitcases could work quite well and it was also gratifying that the lip to get in to the boot was not too excessive.

The warranty on a Volkswagen is 3-years or 60,000 miles, a 3-years paint and 12-year body protection and like most manufacturers Volkswagen give a 1-year assistance breakdown package.

From a driving perspective one feature that

of negative sentiment surrounding the structure of the UK equity market, partly attributed to the recent surge in the value of US stocks. In part this reflects the sector differences between the UK and the US market. For example, the UK has around 23% in financials, 12% in energy and just over 1% in technology companies, whereas for the US these numbers are 13% in financials, 4% in energy and a substantial 29% in technology companies. The performance of the different sectors ebbs and flows though so it’s sensible to have a globally diversified portfolio to ensure that you own a broad swathe of global capitalism.

At the start of 2024, the UK’s FTSE 100 Index – which covers the top 100 stocks listed on the London Stock Exchange – turned 40. It is the most commonly cited UK equity market index by the media, often referred to as the ‘Footsie’ or the ‘index of the leading 100 companies’. The FTSE 100 superseded the FT30, a subjectively selected portfolio of 30 equally weighted companies, which had been in existence since 1935. It's said that 100 stocks were chosen as it was a nice round number and also because it was the maximum number of securities that could fit on the screens of market terminals at the time!

At Cre8 our systematic approach to investing means our portfolios are globally diversified and cost effective. We believe in the value of maintaining a diversified portfolio to mitigate risks and maximize returns. Brave and patient investors have been richly rewarded as the price index has delivered inflation beating returns over its period. This is in contrast to the declining purchasing power experienced by holders of cash since the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, highlighting the inherent risk of being a long-term cash investor. HMRC targets the self-employed for side hustle tax The UK's HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has implemented new tax rules targeting self-employed individuals with side hustles to enhance tax collection and regulatory management. These rules require digital platforms like Airbnb, Etsy, Deliveroo, Uber, Upwork, and Fiverr to collect and report customer information, including names, addresses, bank details, and total sales, to HMRC. The platforms must begin collecting this data from January 1, 2024, and report it from January 2025. The aim is to detect unreported income and ensure compliance with tax regulations among individuals earning through digital platforms.

reporting, incentivizing compliance. To identify discrepancies, HMRC will crossreference data from digital platforms with self-assessment tax returns, triggering investigations if inconsistencies are found. Individuals subject to tax returns include the self-employed, partners in partnerships, and property renters. Even if someone is employed and engaged in a side hustle, they may need to report this additional income to HMRC. Whether the income should be reported depends on factors such as the motive (profitseeking), the number of transactions, and how the sales were conducted. If the annual income from a side hustle is below £1,000, reporting may not be required, considering it may not meet the criteria for a trade. Additionally, a trading allowance of up to £1,000 can be deducted from the income, potentially resulting in no tax liability.

A side hustle refers to a supplementary source of income pursued alongside primary employment, often offering flexibility and skill development opportunities. It has gained prominence in the UK's gig economy, necessitating clear tax and regulatory guidelines.

These new rules address the evolving landscape of side hustles in the gig economy, where more individuals engage in incomegenerating activities. They are designed to improve tax compliance and revenue collection while providing clarity for individuals involved in such activities. Understanding and adhering to these regulations is crucial for those with side hustles to ensure they meet their tax obligations.

HMRC's motivation behind these rules is to close the tax gap caused by errors and omissions in tax collection. The agency has invested nearly £37 million in advanced software, such as Connect, and hired 24 full-time staff to enforce these regulations effectively. The rules also hold digital platforms accountable, subjecting them to fines and penalties for inaccurate or incomplete 64
