After spending the strangest few months wearing what’s in my wardrobe, adding minimal pieces when I need a retail fix, which btw is every month. As the saying goes "you're not on your own", and if you had oily skin and the odd spot, or acne-based skin before lockdown, the chances are it has gotten worse and is not going to go away on its own!

I am the mother of a 15-year-old boy who has suffered from acne for two years. The condition has affected my son's life in so many ways. He did not want to go out with his friends; he was so embarrassed about his Skin. We have tried lots of creams, and GP prescriptions, but nothing worked. PLENTY OF GOOD NEWS FROM STOURBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB of you will know as our flying First XV winger. The other good news from “Mitch” is that the majority of last year’s First XV playing squad have signed up for next season which a strong endorsement of their loyalty.

Out here on the Bridgnorth Road our hands have been tied by the latest lockdown and we are now looking forward to the gradual release of the Government road map back to normality. The freedom to play outdoor sport will come as a great relief to our players, young and old. There is some hope of competitive games as the RFU ease our ability to arrange fixtures with other clubs by extending the season through till June.

At this time of year we are usually preparing for our May Corporate Lunch and May Ball. It is clearly too early for this to go ahead in May so we have now booked the marquee for Friday and Saturday September 24th and 25th. The caterers, speakers and entertainment are all being lined up so please get these dates in your diary. All booking details will be released after the” all clear” on June 21st…..and looking further ahead the Firework display has been booked for Friday November 5th.

Since January with the invaluable goodwill of Sandwell College we have relocated much of their “state of the art” gym equipment and refurbished our own gym. This will provide a much- needed boost to the ongoing fitness regimes of all our players and a welcome upgrade which all our members and subsequently non-members will be able to use at competitive rates.

We are grateful for the goodwill we have witnessed over the past twelve months from our staff and volunteers, for the considerate financial support we have received from so many of our members and sponsors paying their dues in the pretty certain knowledge that the prospect of any meaningful competitive rugby was at best remote. DUCK CONFIT I love the combination of roasted duck with a hint of star anise, it matches so perfectly well with celeriac, especially when roasted. This dish is becoming very popular at the dinner parties I do. I think people are becoming more adventurous with different flavours and this shows from what they order off my menu. Try it yourself or hire me to come and cook it for you. 44

all spice, star anise, garlic, thyme and rosemary. Cover and leave in the fridge over night (overnight optional) Next, pour the oil over the duck legs until completely submerged and cover tightly with strong kitchen foil. Place in your preheated at 175oC for 1 hour and 45 minutes. They may need longer depending on how brown the skin looks.

EQUIPMENT: 1 deep roasting dish (300mm x 200mm and 100mm deep ideally) A roll of strong kitchen foil Tongs Thick oven cloth Food processor Spatula Chopping board Cooks knife Pestle and mortar

For the last 45 minutes of cooking time wash and quarter the celeriac and toss in oil, season and put in the oven to roast. You can slice the peel away from the flesh once it has roasted and cooled. Once the duck and celeriac have finished cooking allow to cool and then cut in half through the middle of the leg in between the joint and place in a separate roasting tin ready to be finally roasted in the oven for 10 minutes on 190oC to crisp up the skin if it needs it - you be the judge of that. Cut the skin off the celeriac as though you were filleting a fish - skin side down knife almost flat on the board. Now put the flesh of the celeriac into a food processor with 100ml of double cream, a pinch of sea salt and blitz until you have a smooth puree. Season and keep warm.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CONFIT: 4 duck legs 1 whole star anise 10 all spice berries 2 sprigs of rosemary 2 sprigs of thyme Maldon sea salt 1 whole garlic cut in half horizontally 5 litres of deep frying rapeseed oil or duck fat but that’s the expensive version.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE REST OF THE DISH:

Now put the duck in the oven to brown and blanch the tops of the broccoli in boiling salted water for 30 seconds and then remove. To make the dressing you need to crush about 10 pistachio nuts with a pinch of sea salt and 1 clove of garlic in a pestle and mortar and chop a few sprigs of parsley and add to the mix then pour in about 100ml of cold pressed rapeseed oil. Put a dollop of the puree in the centre of your plate and push out a little to form the base. Place a few sprigs of parsley and watercress around the plate and a few pumpkin seeds. Arrange the duck in the centre of the puree and drizzle the dressing over and around the duck.

Drain the raisins over a bowl, you don’t want to lose that whisky. Roughly chop the raisins and add walnuts, grated stem ginger and carrots and fold into the cake batter. Pour into your 9” greased and lined tin - I use Alan Silverwood Anodised tins as they distribute the heat more evenly when baking. (Wash by hand, don’t put them in the dishwasher).

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SPONGE: 300ml of olive oil 300g of organic wholemeal self raising flour 300g of soft dark brown sugar 4 medium free range eggs 2 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp of ground ginger 1 tsp of ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp of ground star anise 50g of grated walnuts 50g of grated stem ginger 100g of golden raisins soaked in 100ml of whisky 1 tsp of vanilla extract 1/2 tsp of Valencian orange extract 1 pinch of Maldon sea salt 300g of carrots peeled

Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for about an hour, do the skewer test and then allow to cool in the tin for a while until turning out onto a cooling rack. Whilst this is cooling you can make your butter cream. Using the magi mix with the blade attachment. Pour in the icing sugar and butter and blitz until the mix comes together as a smooth paste, add in a little vanilla and half the ground mace. Now that the sponge has cooled completely slice across the middle with a cake wire or a long pastry knife. I find it easier to chill the sponge first before cutting it’s a little less crumbly. Now spread the butter cream across the middle of the cake, as much as you like but you do need to save some for the outside. I like to completely cover my cake with buttercream on the outside but that’s up to you. Top with the chopped dried apricots, roasted nuts and seeds then dust with a little of the ground mace and icing sugar.

FOR THE REST OF THE BUTTERCREAM: 500g of icing sugar 250g of softened unsalted butter 1 tsp of ground mace 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract 50g of chopped dried apricots 50g of roasted walnut halves and hazelnuts 1 tbsp of toasted pumpkin seeds Icing sugar

Playtime in the garden, longer less muddy walks, and even simply basking in the sun while breathing in the beautiful spring air, it’s happy times once again.

In fact, this sweetener is also found in some nut butters, cakes, jams and ice cream too. Other hazards lurk around the house and garden at this time of the year, many of you may have daffodils and lilies in the house over Easter, please take care because they are very dangerous to pets. Daffodils are toxic to dogs and cats; the flowers and leaves can be harmful if ingested. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, it only takes a small amount to be ingested for them to be poisoned. All parts of the plant are toxic, pollen may fall from the flower on to the cat’s coat and be ingested later when they groom themselves, they may eat a petal or even have a drink of water from the vase, this can lead to kidney failure. Kittens are particularly at risk as they explore their environment and can so easily ingest part of the lily. Certain varieties of lily are also dangerous to dogs and rabbits. Rabbits are curious little souls and will try anything, so you have to be especially careful what you have in their environment.

With Easter upon us, why not make your pets happy times even happier and make them some of their very own Easter treats! You could get the kids to help you come up with fun names for them and make them in the shape of Easter eggs and bunnies, there are plenty of recipes for pet treats on the internet. You could even play a pet friendly version of an Easter egg hunt with your furry one, I’m sure they will sniff out those home-made delights in no time at all. There are a few things that you need to be aware of to keep your furry friends safe though, hot cross buns can be dangerous to pets because grapes, sultanas, raisins and currants are highly toxic to dogs and cats, a very small quantity can lead to kidney failure. Chocolate is also dangerous for dogs, cats, rabbits and many other animals too, it contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to them and can actually be fatal. The darker the chocolate the more dangerous it is, so keep those Easter eggs out of reach and ensure that your children don’t share their chocolate goodies with their pet siblings.

Using elements of nature in your outdoor space will give it life. Whether you love flowers or prefer low maintenance plants, use them! It keeps a space fresh and happy. A water feature nearby would be lovely too. It’s all about the appealing to the senses.

Have you noticed the growing trend for creating an interior feel to gardens these days! A decade ago, it was virtually impossible to find garden sofas, outdoor rugs, double day beds, cushions and firepits but now these things are becoming commonplace. Our summers in the UK maybe short and unpredictable, but we certainly seem determined to make the most of them. Are you looking for something cool and contemporary, exotic and enticing or a cosy vintage style. There is so much choice available, we can be really creative. Bear your theme in mind when you are choosing lighting, heating and accessories.

In exactly the same way as you would plan a room in your home, start by thinking about how you would like to use the space and what will make the space feel most comfortable for you. For some, that means a screen for privacy. Maybe it means adding a shade to protect you from the hot summer sun. Pergolas give outdoor spaces the perfect amount of shade and add architectural detail to a garden. Add vines and other climbing plants to the structure for a little privacy and even more shade. A FAMILY CITY BREAK IN BRIGHTON by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

to transform his Brighton property into a villa, which became known as the Marine Pavilion, frequented by the highest echelons of society.

For families considering a city break escape, Brighton, located on the East Sussex coast, offers a wide range of attractions to keep grown-ups and little ones entertained. Prior to travel restrictions, I was fortunate to visit this resort, which became popular due to the patronage of George, the Prince of Wales, who became Prince Regent in 1811, ascended the throne in 1820, and was duly crowned King George IV.

John Nash, Architect to the Prince Regent, was responsible for the design of Marble Arch and works on many other prominent London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, and in 1815 he was instructed to redesign and extend the property. The magnificent minarets, domes and pinnacles on the exterior of the building reflect the opulence of the interior rooms, galleries and corridors, which feature exquisite and intricate decoration, lavish furnishings and glittering treasures.

During the 1780s, George, Prince of Wales, suffered from gout and he was advised by his physicians to visit Brighton in order to take advantage of the resort’s climate and to take regular ‘dips’ in the briny. He promptly rented a small property and discovered, to his delight, that he could avoid the intrusive Royal court and indulge in his favourite pastimes of consuming alcohol, fraternising with women, and gambling, with abandon, although debts were mounting. In 1787 the House of Commons cleared his debts and his income was increased. He hired the renowned architect Henry Holland and instructed him

Although George IV’s descendants William IV and Queen Victoria frequented the Royal Pavilion, the Queen remarked that it was ‘a strange, odd, Chinese place’; she found the property too small for her growing family and purchased Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. In 1850 the Royal Pavilion was sold to the city of Brighton for approximately £50,000 54

Our Travel and Queen Victoria requested that the building was to be stripped of all items, which were then transported to either Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. A large number of these items have been returned, on loan, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and many of them have not been seen by the public. I was keen to explore the site and hopped on a local bus bound for the Royal Pavilion. The interior of the exotic property reflects a fusion of Regency splendour, Indian and Chinese styles, and a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours. I was particularly impressed with the banqueting room, which is adorned with enormous sparkling chandeliers, art works and golden dragons galore. I was reliably informed that the prince did not sit at the end of the very long dining table but in the very centre so that he would be privy to several conversations. After dining on an extravagant menu of 32 dishes, which would last for up to six hours, guests would then head to the sumptuous lounge to relax or perhaps succumb to forty winks and then gather in the music room beneath the gilded domed ceiling festooned

with hundreds of plaster cockleshells and where in 1823, Rossini performed. After exploring the enormous kitchen and the king’s bedroom I made my way to the Royal Pavilion garden’s, which have been fully restored following John Nash’s 1820’s plans. The colourful collection of plants and flowers includes fifteen varieties of rose, rosemary, sweet Williams, lavender, blue larkspurs, peonies, hollyhocks and foxgloves. With the fragrant scents of blooms in my nostrils I headed for the promenade beside the sea and as I sauntered along at a leisurely pace passing Brighton Pier, and with my ice cream cornet melting in my hand, I looked up at a flock of sea gulls squawking overhead and spotted another popular attraction. The British Airways i360 observation tower soars 162 metres into the blue sky and it’s a delightful experience. This ‘vertical pier’ features a fully enclosed glass viewing pod, which is very spacious, and as it gently glides up and down passengers are afforded spectacular panoramic views across Brighton, the South Downs and the glorious English Channel.

Our Travel Back on terra firma I noticed the Regency Restaurant, a thriving family business, founded in 1963, which is located on the Kings Road overlooking the elegant Regency Square and opposite the i360. I selected an outside table, and whilst bathed in the warmth of the sunlight I devoured the juicy Mediterranean platter, which includes the fish of the day, mussels, clams, scallops and king prawns and accompanied by the dry and elegant Chablis 2018, it was sublime.

As my first day of explorations came to an end I checked into the Legacy, a modern, low-level apartment block located on Denmark Villas, a stone’s throw from Hove railway station and ideal for families. My two-bedroom - twobathroom apartment was spacious, airy and bright with contemporary furnishings and I immediately kicked off my shoes and made myself at home. The lounge features a work station, a dining area, two comfortable sofas and a large television with Netflix. The master bedroom, which features ample storage and a large comfortable bed swathed in crisp, white linens, resulted in a deep a restful slumber and I was delighted to discover a generous supply of Gilchrist and Soames toiletries in the en suite bathroom. After indulging in a homemade breakfast I made my way to the Brighton Lanes, a collection of meandering narrow alleyways crammed with charming and quirky antique and jewellery shops and I browsed for hours on end.

Laden with shopping bags, I noticed that it was getting rather late and it was time to find a spot for dinner. Bill’s, located on North Road, was just the ticket. This spacious, rustic-style restaurant, on the site of an old bus depot, offers excellent service, an open kitchen and an enticing menu. I ordered the delicious pan fried sea bass with avocado, cherry tomato, caper salsa and herb rösti, and the Gavi Voltolino 2018 was the perfect accompaniment. Striking up a conversation with a small group of fellow diners I remarked

AUDI A1 SPORT BACK

able to get a golf bag and trolley within there, it is surprising large for such a small car.

The A1 has been with us for over 8 years and is still a stylish, extremely desirable car, and with that famous 4 ring badge proudly displayed on the front, stating quite clearly I am an Audi and therefore a quality and aspirational brand, writes Bob Hickman.

The level of trim is reasonably good, I suppose one of the big selling points could be the infotainment system. The 9” touch screen is a standard feature even on entry level vehicle. It has wonderful graphics that are not only good to look at, but they are easy to understand and operate. There is no satellite navigation system as standard, but it does have the Audi Smart Phone interface so you can use your Apple or android smart phone navigation app on the big screen.

The A1 is available with a multitude of choices to be made, engines from a diminutive 1-litre 3-cylinder or up to a 2-litre, a choice between manual or the wonderful 7-speed automatic gearbox and a plethora of trim levels to choose from and do you want a 3 or 5 door. The test car had a 1498 cc 4 cylinder petrol engine, producing 148 bhp, with the 7 speed automatic gear box, top speed is quoted at 137mph and the 0 - 60 gallop in 7.7 seconds. The A1 is quite a bit more spacious than an average small SUV. There is a huge amount of headroom in the front with plenty of seat adjustments to get the driver comfortable, and the back of the vehicle will accommodate 2 adults quite easily. The boot, always an important feature on small cars, is reasonably roomy, my wife was 58

Our Motoring If you fancy the larger touchscreen then you have to bite the bullet and pay the optional extra of £1650 for a Technology pack. This increases the screen to 10” and has an integrated satellite navigation system, it is more responsive and it responds well. The Technology pack also allows the option of the car’s sat nav to be viewed in the dash behind the steering wheel. This not only looks really good, but it is intuitive to operate using buttons on the steering wheel. I should mention that the “google earth “ graphics have to be seen to be believed.

I suppose if you were very gentle and did a lot of motorway work that could well be the case. I like the fact that the engine was never really that noisy or obtrusive, I put that down to good insulation under the bonnet. The ride quality was at all times good and the seats very supportive.

The driving dynamics of the A1 were of a wonderful companion, the brilliant automatic gearbox that Audi have pioneered some years ago always seem to be able to anticipate the correct gear and it was a wonderful smooth, easy to settle into vehicle.
