Message from the President
Dear Lincoln University Graduates and Families:
On behalf of the entire Lincoln University family, I am pleased to extend sincerest congratulations to the Class of 2021. We are happy to be able to gather on the campus today to celebrate and commemorate your achievements. I join all those who have provided support and assistance along the way, including your family and loved ones, faculty, mentors, staff, fellow students, alumni, trustees and university supporters in applauding you for the hard work that has made your participation on this occasion possible.

We applaud your dedication and determination to earn a higher education degree, even under the unprecedented circumstances that began in 2020 and continue today. These life changing conditions necessitated changes in the delivery of your higher education through your final semester at Lincoln. We salute you for persevering through a very difficult period of trial and error, not letting the challenges and uncertainties deter you from achieving your goal. Thank you for staying the course with us!
To the parents, guardians, families, and friends of the Class of 2021, I also extend heartfelt thanks for entrusting us with the humbling responsibility of sharing in the personal and intellectual enhancement of these graduates. While they sit in the seats of honor and receive their treasured diplomas, this graduation belongs to you as well. I know your support has been invaluable to their success.
Graduates, you are forever the sons and daughters of this great institution. Your alma mater is proud of your accomplishments. We are certain that your years at Lincoln have prepared you well for the world beyond the arches. We wish you nothing but continued success as you depart to take on the world. Carry forward the Lincoln University legacy of excellence in all that you do.
You entered to learn – you are now liberated and ready to lead. Congratulations!

A Legacy of Producing Leaders
Since its founding in 1854, Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has been internationally recognized for its commitment to excellence in scholarship and service by providing a rigorous, world-class liberal arts education. Lincoln University graduates have distinguished themselves in many fields, including medicine, science, theology, education, law, and the arts.
In addition to our more well-known graduates — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall ’30; poet and playwright Langston Hughes ’29; the first president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe ’30; and the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah ’39 — Lincoln University and its graduates have participated in the founding of eight U.S. universities and launched the model for what became the U.S. Peace Corps. Lincoln graduates also include the first African American bishop of the United Methodist Church, Roy C. Nichols ’41, and the U.S. Navy’s first African American female rear admiral, Lillian Fishburne ’71.
The University’s beginnings can be traced back with recognition to its founder, Presbyterian Minister John Miller Dickey; his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson; and the first two students, James Ralston Amos and his brother, Thomas H. Amos. Lincoln University was initially chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of Jehudi Ashmun, the first governor of Liberia, and renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from
the surrounding community, the region, and throughout the world. The University admitted women students in 1952 and formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. Lincoln University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Lincoln University has had 14 presidents in its distinguished history, with President Brenda A. Allen currently at the helm. They include Dickey (1854-56); John Pym Carter (1856-61); John Wynne Martin (1861-65); Isaac Norton Rendall (18651906); John Ballard Rendall (1906- 24); William Hallock Johnson (1926-36); Walter Livingston Wright (1936-45); Horace Mann Bond (1945-57); Marvin Wachman (1961- 69); Herman Russell Branson 1970-85); Niara Sudarkasa (1987-98); Ivory V. Nelson (1999-2011); Robert R. Jennings (2012-14); and Brenda A . Allen (July 2017-present).
Lincoln University’s historic campus is located on 422 acres in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The University operates an additional location at 3020 Market Street in Philadelphia.
Lincoln University remains committed to preserving its distinction as an intellectual and cultural resource for this region.

Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D. Academic, Author, Ordained Minister and Media Host

Michael Eric Dyson is one of the nation’s most renowned professors, writers, preachers, lecturers, and media personalities. Dyson, who earned his Ph.D. in religion at Princeton University, has taught at some of the nation’s most distinguished universities, including Brown, UNC Chapel Hill, Columbia, DePaul, Georgetown and the University of Pennsylvania. He is presently NEH Centennial Chair; Distinguished University Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies, College of Arts & Science; and Distinguished University Professor of Ethics and Society, The Divinity School, Vanderbilt University.
One of America’s premier public intellectuals, he is the author of 24 books. His seven New York Times bestsellers include volumes on Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, 2Pac, Marvin Gaye, Bill Cosby, and Barack Obama. Among his notable publications are Reflecting Black: African American Cultural Criticism, his pioneering book of black cultural studies; I May Not Get There with You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr., his book on the civil rights icon that probed his radical dimensions; Holler if You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur; and Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?
Dyson’s bestselling The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America, was a finalist for the prestigious 2016 Kirkus Prize. His bestselling Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America, was called by the New York Times, “one of the most frank and searing discussions on race… a deeply serious, urgent book, which should take its place in the tradition of Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time and King’s Why We Can’t Wait.” The book won the 2018 Southern Book Prize.
His Come Hell or High Water: Hurricane Katrina and the Color of Disaster won the American Book Award. Dyson’s New York Times bestseller, What Truth Sounds Like: RFK, James Baldwin and Our Unfinished Conversation on Race in America, was named by the Washington Post as one of the “50 notable works of nonfiction in 2018.”
His bestselling JAY-Z: Made in America, won Dyson an African American Literary Award as “Author of the Year.” His most recent book, the bestseller Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America, was nominated for a 2021 NAACP Image Award.
As a preacher and sometime pastor for the past 40 years, Dyson—who was licensed and ordained at Detroit’s historic Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church—has delivered sermons from many of the nation’s most noted pulpits, including at the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, his current home church.
Lecturing across the country and the world, Dyson has also served for the last 30 years as a media commentator and host on such major radio and television shows as NPR’s Morning Edition, The Takeaway, and Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and television’s Meet the Press, Face the Nation, Today Show, Good Morning America, and Real Time with Bill Maher. Dyson is both a contributing editor for the ESPN web site, The Undefeated, and a political analyst for MSNB, CNN, and Fox News. Dyson has also made guest appearances on scripted cable and network television programs such as Soul Food, The Game and Black-ish.
Writer Nathan McCall captures it best when he says that Dyson “is a street fighter in suit and tie.”
Honorary Degree
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa Gloria Carter
Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Shawn Carter Foundation
Ms. Gloria Carter is Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF). SCF was established in 2003 as a 501c3 public charity (“Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund”) by Ms. Carter and her son, Shawn Carter. The Foundation was formed in response to Ms. Carter’s desire to create “something that would enhance the future of our young people.” Its mission is to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships further their education at institutions of higher learning. As such, SCF Scholars represent diverse backgrounds, and typically face significant barriers to success such as teen pregnancy, homelessness, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, and sexual and domestic abuse, but they all possess an extraordinary desire to pursue their educational and professional dreams. Through the Foundation’s signature scholarship fund, annual college tours, study abroad experiences, counseling initiatives, wealth-building workshops, career exposure opportunities, and holiday toy and meal drives, youth and communities in need have benefited and been able to overcome obstacles to success.
Ms. Carter has received numerous honors for the impactful contributions made through the Shawn Carter Foundation to local, national and global communities. In 2020, the SCF earned the Joyce E. Smith Excellence in Education Award by the National Association for College Admissions Counselors. Prior to that Ms. Carter received a Special Recognition Award at GLAAD on behalf of her son for the song, Smile, and that same year she also received the Everyday People Award from the WACO Theater in Los Angeles, CA. In 2017 she launched a national fundraising campaign in partnership with eBAY to raise awareness about SCF engaging the support of various celebrities and the general public. In 2016 she was honored during the Toast to Our Mothers celebration hosted by Dress for Success. In 2014, she was presented with the inaugural Generation Study
Abroad Award, to recognize the outstanding contributions that the Shawn Carter Foundation has made in partnership with the Institute for International Education and the US Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in “encouraging purposeful, innovative action to get more Americans to undertake an international experience.” She was also featured in publications such as USA Today, US Weekly, and in Morgan Stanley’s Perspectives in Philanthropy, highlighting her thoughts on the importance of education as well as the origin and impact of SCF.
Prior to 2014, she was recognized by various groups including The Wall Street Alphas Charitable Foundation (Think Black Award for her dedication to building social and intellectual equity for youth); Boys and Girls High School (Tohma Faulkner Women of Distinction Award for her commitment to community service); Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Gamma Omicron Zeta Chapter; and Zeta Amicae of Newark/Orange. In 2007, Ms. Carter received a proclamation from the New York City Council for her outstanding contributions to the community.

Ms. Carter is the former owner of Newark-based café and lounge, “Diamondz N Da Ruff”, where she offered local youth etiquette classes and stage presence training in partnership with TEAMWORK (Talented Entertainers, Artists & Musicians at Work).
Whether on stage receiving awards, in the boardroom making decisions on the Foundation’s strategic direction, on a charter bus motivating students on the annual HBCU tour, in the office reading scholarship applications, in the housing projects distributing meals to families impacted by natural disasters, or on the ground handing toys and spreading holiday cheer to residents of the Marcy projects, Ms. Carter proves that service is both a responsibility and lifestyle.
Honorary Degree
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa Percy Robert Miller
Hip-Hop Mogul, Actor, Producer, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist
Percy (Master P) Miller is a hip-hop mogul, actor, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who founded No Limit Records, which has sold 100 million records. In 1990, at a time when record labels were still reluctant to look beyond New York or Los Angeles, he formed his own label, No Limit—a label whose artists have included Mystikal, Kane & Abel and Snoop Dogg. Miller also has established himself as a savvy businessman with a range of investments and interests beyond rap.
Born in New Orleans’ Calliope Projects, Miller was a talented basketball player who played for the University of Houston and, in pre-season games, for the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors. He ultimately majored in business at Merritt College in California. After his late grandfather left him $10,000, he opened a record shop in Richmond, California— where his mother was living—called No Limit Records.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it was hard for regional rappers to attract major labels, Master P decided to bankroll his own music. No Limit’s first release was Mind of a Psychopath by The Real Untouchables (TRU), which included him. He sold the limited number of gangster rap four-track cassettes out of his car’s trunk.
Then a distribution deal with Priority Records made No Limit an under-the-radar phenomenon. In 1995, Miller relocated his company to New Orleans and began signing such acts as Mia X, Mr. Serv-on, and Mystikal. Master P’s real commercial breakthrough came after the release of his fifth album, Ice Cream Man (1996) and his sixth, Ghetto D, a year later. The album went triple platinum while spawning such hit singles as “Make ‘Em Say Uhh!”
Master P’s seventh album, MP Da Last Don (1998), sold more than 4 million copies while Mystikal and Mia X also had hit albums. That same year, he scored a huge coup when Snoop Dogg signed with No Limit. Meanwhile, a year earlier his successful independent film I’m Bout It set a trend for other rappers to release their own direct-to-video films.
It was part of a growing portfolio of projects for the entrepreneur, who invested in real estate, the stock market, shops, energy drinks, clothing lines. and cable television. “I’m in it to make money,” he told the New York Times. “I guess I want to be the ghetto Bill Gates.”
Such success runs in the family. His son Romeo Miller, who recorded as Lil Romeo on his father’s label, has acted in several TV shows and films. I Got the Hook Up 2, a sequel to his cult comedy, I Got the Hook Up, was one of 2019’s top urban films.
Master P is still releasing solo albums and is also involved in politics and philanthropy. He founded the Team Hope NOLA Foundation, which serves at-risk children across the U.S. Speaking of Master P, rapper 2 Chainz recently told Vibe: “I just want to let him know how he influences the whole South in hip hop. It was his grind, his hustle. He’s the reason why a lot of us are here, including myself.”

Honorary Degree
Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa Charles V. Hamilton, Ph.D.
W.S. Sayre Professor Emeritus of Government and Political Science, Columbia University
Dr. Charles V. Hamilton, a former Lincoln University professor, is a political scientist, civil rights leader, and the Wallace S. Sayre Professor Emeritus of Government at Columbia University. One of the first African Americans to hold an endowed chair at an Ivy League university, Hamilton focused his research on urban politics and the civil rights movement. His most famous and best-selling book, which he co-authored with Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), is “Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America” (1967).
The publication of the book transformed Hamilton into a high-profile public intellectual. Four years ago, on the 50th anniversary of the book’s publication, Penguin Random House, the book’s publisher, declared:
“A revolutionary work since its publication, ‘Black Power’ exposed the depths of systemic racism in this country and provided a radical political framework for reform: true and lasting social change would only be accomplished through unity among African-Americans and their independence from the preexisting order. An eloquent document of the civil rights movement that remains a work of profound social relevance 50 years after it was first published.”
Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Dr. Hamilton graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago in 1951 and earned a master’s degree in 1957 from the University of Chicago. After teaching for several years at the Tuskegee Institute, he returned to the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1964. He was on the faculty of Rutgers University, Lincoln University and his alma mater, Roosevelt University, before joining Columbia in 1969.
Dr. Hamilton’s other important books include: “The Black Preacher in America” (1972); “Bench and the Ballot: Southern Federal Judges and Black Voters” (1973); “Adam Clayton Powell Jr.: The Political Biography of an American Dilemma” (1991); and, coauthored with Dona Cooper Hamilton, his late wife of 60 years, Dona Cooper Hamilton, “The Dual Agenda: Race and the Social Welfare Policies of Civil Rights Organizations” (1997). She was professor of social work at Herbert Lehman College, City University of New York.
Dr. Hamilton is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and a former member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He retired from Columbia in 1998 and later moved to Chicago.
Three years ago, he established The Drs. Charles V. and Dona C. Hamilton Institute for Research and Civic Involvement at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. The institute provides visitors a range of opportunities to peruse its non-circulating reference collection, including rare books, to research the museum’s archives and to attend lectures and history and policy discussions—many of which are aimed at youth audiences.
“I was interested in combining academic studies with political action,” Dr. Hamilton told Good Black News. “My concern was not only to profess but to participate. I see the DuSable Museum as a repository of those efforts; and people will come look at them with those eyes; that people will see someone who not just wrote books but participated.”

Academic Regalia
The pageantry of commencement exercises dates from the Middle Ages and the traditions of Europe’s first universities. The origins of academic attire are obscure, but the ordinary dress of the scholar, whether student or teacher, was the dress of a cleric. The gown appears to be an adaptation of the robe of a priest or friar; the hood and the mortarboard evolved from the cowl and skullcap worn by monks and friars. The gowns, hoods, and caps are different for each degree level - bachelor, master, and doctoral.
GOWN
The bachelor’s gown is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown can be worn open or closed and has long sleeves, usually closed but slit above the elbow to allow the forearm to protrude. Gowns for the bachelor’s and master’s degrees are untrimmed. The doctoral gown has full, bell shaped sleeves and is trimmed with velvet panels down the front with three velvet bars on each sleeve. Although black velvet is proper trimming for all doctoral gowns, the color of the velvet panels and bars is sometimes varied to indicate the academic discipline in which the degree was earned. For the Doctor of Philosophy {Ph.D.) degree, the dark blue color is used to represent the mastery of learning and scholarship in any field and is not intended to represent the field of philosophy.
HOOD
The hood is worn around the neck and drapes down the back. It varies in length from three feet for the bachelor’s hood to four feet for the doctoral hood. Only the doctoral hood shall have panels at the sides. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Thus, the hoods of graduates of Lincoln University are orange and blue. The edging of the hood is velvet or velveteen and may be either black or the color that corresponds to the academic discipline. Lincoln University uses white for the Bachelor of Arts, gold for the Bachelor of Science and the Master of Science degrees, light blue for the Master of Education, and citron for the Master of Arts.
TASSEL
An integral part of the headdress, the tassel varies widely in its use and color. The doctor usually wears a gold tassel, although black is acceptable. Tassel colors often correspond to the color of the academic discipline. At Lincoln University, the black is used for the master’s degree and the school colors, orange and blue, are used for the bachelor’s tassel.
CAP
The mortarboard cap is generally recommended. The soft tam is reserved for the doctoral degree.
COLORS
Although there is variation among different universities, the following colors are common: science - gold; educationlight blue; the arts and humanities - white; human services and social work - citron.
MEDALLION
The ceremonial medallion, worn by the University president during Commencement and other academic ceremonies, features the Lincoln University seal. The name of each Lincoln University president is inscribed on an individual plate around the chain.

MACE
The ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal and wood that is carried by the marshal ahead of the president and platform-party dignitaries during Commencement and other academic ceremonies to represent authority. Lincoln University’s mace features the University seal. The practice dates back to the medieval times when knights carried maces during processions for kings.

Lift Every Voice and Sing
James Weldon Johnson (1871 – 1938)
Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
A. Dennee Bibb, 1911
Dear Lincoln, Dear Lincoln, To Thee we’ll e’er be true. The golden hours we spent beneath The dear old Orange and Blue, Will live for e’er in memory, As guiding stars through life; For thee, our Alma Mater dear, We’ll rise in our might.
For we love ev’ry inch of thy sacred soil, Ev’ry tree on thy campus green; And for thee with our might We will ever toil
That thou mightest be supreme. We’ll raise thy standard to the sky, Midst glory and honor to fly. And constant and true We will live for thee anew, Our dear old Orange and Blue. Hail! Hail! Lincoln.
