President
Dear Lincolnites and Friends,
As we celebrate the 160th anniversary of Lincoln University of Missouri, I am honored to share this special issue of Alumni Line with you - a reflection of our legacy, our progress, and the powerful future we are building together.
At the heart of this anniversary is our deep gratitude for the soldiers of the 62nd and 65th Regiments of the United States Colored Troops, men whose courage, sacrifice and vision gave rise to this institution 160 years ago. Their belief in the transformative power of education became the foundation of Lincoln University and continues to guide us today.
" As we w/ mark this
milestone year, I am proud to share that Lincoln continues
to build momentum and
change futures."
As we mark this milestone year, I am proud to share that Lincoln continues to build momentum and change futures. From expanding enrollment and record retention to rising grade point averages, we are seeing powerful results. Our Blue Tigers are thriving. Throughout this issue, you'll read how progress is unfolding across our campus and beyond through the dedication and accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students.
This momentum reflects the enduring vision of our founders, shaping how Lincoln continues to grow and innovate. In these pages, you'll see how new academic programs are expanding access and creating pathways for students and professionals alike, addressing workforce needs across Missouri and beyond. You will also read about this forward progress reflected in our facilities. During the fall semester, we celebrated the reopening of Dawson Hall, enhancing the residential experience and supporting student success. Later this year, we look forward to the grand opening of the Health & Security Sciences Institute - a transformative project that will help prepare the next generation of leaders in health care, public safety and crisis response across Missouri and the Midwest. These milestones represent just a snapshot of the progress you'll discover in this issue. Together, they reflect our shared vision for Lincoln's future and what is possible when we come together with purpose and determination to fulfill our mission of transforming lives through education, innovation and service.
As we celebrate 160 years of Lincoln University, we are strengthening Lincoln's foundation, expanding opportunity and ensuring that this institution continues to transform lives for generations to come. Together, we advance the Founders' Dream.
With Blue Tiger Pride, Jesmore

oversees daily operations of the program, manages
faculty, secures clinical placements and teaches in both the AAS and
RN-to-BSN programs. What does Lincoln
University's presence look like at the Fort Leonard Wood/St. Robert campus?
Lincoln serves a truly unique population here. Many of our students are active-duty service members, veterans or
military spouses who have spent years working toward their educational goals, often facing interruptions due to relocations, deployments and life challenges. We offer evening and weekend courses that open doors for students who cannot attend traditional
daytime classes. This flexibility is essential because many work full time, are actively serving or have significant family responsibilities.

Training Academy and Lincoln's Emergency Medical Technician programs. What does it mean to you personally to represent an HBCU in a military-focused environment?
It's truly an honor. Leading Lincoln's presence here carries special significance because of the institution's legacy as one of the country's historically Black colleges and universities. We honor that HBCU legacy while embracing the rich diversity the military brings to the region. The Fort Leonard Wood

That belief strongly aligns with Lincoln's mission. Many of our students, particularly military spouses, have made tremendous sacrifices.
Supporting them and helping them reach their goals is both meaningful and humbling.
I often remind students that
effective nursing begins with listening, not with the intent to respond, but with the intent to understand. Many patients
simply need to feel heard and know that someone genuinely cares. One of my goals is for every student who leaves our program to carry a deeper level of empathy and human connection into their practice.
We also emphasize safety, preparedness and critical thinking. Our goal is to graduate nurses who are not only clinically competent but confident, adaptable and ready to respond effectively in any situation.

It is a story well-known to every Lincolnite - how a band of freed Black
soldiers dreamed of educating the people of their home state and turned
that dream into reality. As the Civil War drew ever closer to its end
in 1865, the soldiers of the 62nd and 65th
HONORING THE DREAM. ADVANCING TOGETHER.
Regiments of the United States Colored Troops at Fort McIntosh, Texas, began to make plans for their return to their homes in Missouri. The
soldiers had learned to read and write as part of their training in boot camp, and they wanted to give that same opportunity - and more - to other freed Black people. The soldiers, whose pay averaged $13 a month, pooled their funds to found Lincoln Institute in Jefferson City. The soldiers of the 62nd came up with $5,000; those in the 65th added another $1,400 to the school's endowment.
The men had three requirements: the institution would be located in Missouri for
the benefit of emancipated African Americans with a curriculum that combined study and labor. Those founding goals have propelled Lincoln to the heights of historically Black colleges and universities.

teams. Lincoln broke ground on the project in October 2024. After 1½ years of construction, the HSSI building is taking shape, on track for a late summer completion and fall semester opening.
The planning team is pleased with the building's progress as multiple planning tracks
When finished, the HSSI
building will house the Security Sciences Institute on the ground floor, featuring the country's first open-access emergency operations center,
a 911 call training center and a cybersecurity lab. The second floor belongs to Lincoln's School of Nursing, equipped with nursing simulator pods and fully developed hospital rooms as well as classrooms,
study spaces, offices and an expanded lounge. The top floor of the building is set to be a 500-seat conference center,
incorporating both large and small spaces for classes, meetings and other uses.
Nursing School Shuffle The concurrent renovation
of 75-year-old Elliff Hall also continues on schedule as part of the HSSI project. "What's often lost in the narrative is
that the renovation of Elliff
Hall is also progressing," Watson says. "It's not new construction, but in some
ways that has made it a more difficult endeavor." Elliff Hall will continue to
house most of the nursing program, as well as radio station KJLU, which moved into Elliff in 2024 after a
partial renovation that year to modernize the station's new
space, funded by a Title III grant. The planning team is exploring other opportunities for Elliff that may include connecting it to the HSSI building for nursing program continuity, says Landyn Smith, LU director of facilities and
planning. "We are reviewing options, but nothing is confirmed yet," Smith adds. In the meantime, the Nursing School has moved operations to Leslie Boulevard Plaza until
work on both buildings is completed later this year.

Anticipation Excitement is building for Move-In Day this fall as Lincoln works toward
becoming a hub of health care innovation and emergency training for Missouri and the "Moving temporarily during the Elliff Hall renovation
required flexibility to navigate a new environment," says Jennifer McCord, department head at the School of Nursing. "Successfully adjusting involved setting up a functional educational space quickly, to establish a sense of normalcy for faculty, staff and students."
Partnerships The HSSI building represents a significant expansion of access to Lincoln's education, training and simulation offerings. Forming partnerships is key to bringing everyone to the table, Watson says.
"We are in the early stages of developing usage partnerships with the Jefferson City Police Department, Jefferson City Fire Department and Cole County Emergency Medical Services," he adds. "There are a lot of
considerations from liability and schedules to emergency guidelines and shared training and education opportunities. Having everyone fully committed from the start will

LU Alumnus Dennis Strobel '74 Establishes
Cecil Blue The influence of a great professor lasts far beyond the classroom. For generations of Lincoln University students, faculty have not only shaped knowledge but also inspired lives, careers and legacies.
One such professor, the late Cecil Blue - an English scholar, Harlem Renaissance writer and beloved member
of the LU faculty for nearly five decades - left a lasting impression on alumnus Dennis Strobel. Now, Strobel
is ensuring that Blue's legacy continues to inspire future Blue Tigers through the establishment of the Cecil Blue
Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Strobel, who graduated from Lincoln in 1974, has named his
alma mater as the beneficiary of an Individual Retirement
Account currently worth about $180,000 in a testamentary
gift to establish the Cecil Blue Memorial Scholarship Fund, honoring the legacy of Strobel's one-time professor of English literature. The IRA will transfer
to Lincoln upon Strobel's passing. In addition, Strobel has pledged to jump-start the scholarships during his lifetime with yearly contributions of about $6,400 from his required
