The Mission of Lincoln School Lincoln School is an independent college preparatory school for girls where high academic and ethical standards challenge students from nursery through grade 12 to nurture their special talents and interests. We Are All Leaders!

his fall, I joined the eighth grade around a campfire in the backyard of our Little Compton home. We had finished dinner and were taking a reflective breather before roasting the marshmallows for our s’mores. Middle and Upper School Director Peter Brooks asked the girls what they had learned during their morning on the ropes course at the Outdoor Leadership Center in Newport and their afternoon of pitching tents, and preparing dinner and how these team-building experiences might come alive as they assumed their leadership roles in the Middle School.

Highs and lows of the day were expressed in the form of facing fears and challenges and ways in which they felt inspired and supported by their classmates. The girls shared messages of appreciation for the attention and encouragement that was paid as they stepped off the zip-line platform and fell into a “trust” hold.

As I observed this circle of young women’s faces reflecting the glow of the fire, I thought: we should be proud that we have raised such powerful, articulate and self-aware young women.

To a girl, they were each able to express feelings of pride in their growth through the Middle School years while still acknowledging that they are a talkative, high-energy, opinionated lot. “We can’t help it,” said one. “We just have so much enthusiasm!”

As the sharing continued, they came (with a little help from Mr. Brooks) to the conclusion that the most powerful leadership comes in the form of listening.

While appreciative of this revelation, the group conceded that listening might not be their collective strength. There was a group chuckle, a few more comments that advanced the conversation and then…one of the girls blurted out, “We are all leaders!”

What she meant, I believe, was that each member of the eighth grade possesses outgoing, high-energy leadership qualities. Mostly good, but as the group took a little more time to consider her comment, a whole new interpretation emerged. Every girl was able to see that she carries the potential for individual leadership in the context of active listening. “If we all take responsibility to model for the sixth and seventh graders and have the willingness to hear the voices of others, we’ll have a great year!”

Leadership takes on many shapes and sizes at Lincoln. Student and Honor Councils, Middle School Clerks, students who put together our community curriculum days on diversity (see Morgan Stone Day on page 9) and women’s issues, our girls step forward on stage, in the classroom, on our playing fields, and in the community beyond Lincoln (see Profiles on pages 5-6), finding both their voice and their listening ears through a diverse set of opportunities at Lincoln as they get ready for the challenges that await them in college and beyond.

Our faculty and staff, too, continue their work in leadership development. Our Professional Development Program

funding has expanded three-fold over the past ten years and sends teachers and administrators to courses and workshops that expand their knowledge and experience in fields of innovation, curriculum design, student wellness, and integration of technology, among others.

This spring and fall, we engaged in innovative activities and discussions around nurturing creativity and encouraging risk-taking during our professional development days. We move into 2013 with a series of “Teaching and Learning” meetings on design thinking and innovation, latest classroom technology tools, and 21st Century approaches to assessment of student learning, understanding and achievement.

I recently learned that the Chinese character that depicts “to listen”( ) is made up of the characters that mean “eyes,” “ears,” “undivided attention,” and “heart;” essential attributes to good leadership. I give our eighth graders a lot of credit for finding one of the keys – if not the key – to successful leadership while they were gathered around the campfire. It is exciting to think what is ahead for them!

Lifelong Learners Lincoln School maintains a Professional Growth Program in which all of our faculty are encouraged to become lifelong learners. Whether attending a conference that is geared toward the content of a specific discipline or engaging in a day-long workshop about teaching and learning in an all-girls school, Lincoln affords its teachers with the guidance, funding and resources to maintain an intentional teaching practice that involves targeted professional growth and consistent vocational renewal.

The core focus of Lincoln's professional development program is to establish a culture of risk taking and innovation amongst our faulty. Through in-house and external professional development experiences, our faculty have the opportunity to reflect on their daily practice, to learn about new approaches to curriculum design and instruction, and to apply this knowledge to their work with our incredibly motivated and engaged student body. Lower School teacher courtney Dubois attended Highlander Institutes Diverse Learners conference with Lower and Middle School teacher Sandrine Dundas and did a presentation to the Lower School faculty in December.

Courtney will be attending the Quaker Life workshop in Pennsylvania in February.

Studio teacher Giovonne calenda was at Smith College and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art that co-hosted the summer institute in a workshop called, “Learning through the Arts and Literature: A Collaboration Celebrating Innovation and Inspiration in International Education” This institute featured presentations by educators from the University of Florence and Pistoia, Italy, as well as Smith College and the Carle Museum. A bookmaking workshop and visits to artist's studios were also offered. She was also at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design’s "Art and Science Summer Institute.” This symposium focused on the connections of art and science as part of the “STEM to STEAM” initiative being explored by RISD. Lower School music teacher Marcia Taylor will attend a National Conference of Kodaly music educators in March in Hartford Ct.

Faculty Professional Development

past few years, our teachers have benefited from attending conferences far and near on a wide range of topics. Each time members of the Lincoln Faculty attend a conference, they return with a new perspective and a drive to share that perspective with their colleagues. In addition, the school is committed to bringing the best and brightest in the world of education to Lincoln to increase the capacity of our faculty to deliver the highest quality education to our students. Most notably in the past two years, Lincoln has welcomed the following experts to work with our faculty: Leonard Sax talked with our faculty about the best practices that most effectively engage young women in the classroom. Through a discussion of her book "The iConnected Parent," Abigail Sullivan Moore ’73 helped our teachers to explore how the internet and cellular technology have changed how, when and why young people communicate with their parents and how this new mode of

Lower School teachers Liz ford and Alyssa Anderson traveled to Arles, France this past

summer to participate in a weeklong course called The Creativity Workshop. During the workshop, they learned about new creative ways to expand the teaching of writing.

Performing Arts teacher David Ely participated in a two-week course entitled, “Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance,” at the Globe Theater, London. The Globe was built, not just as a recreation of Shakespeare's theater, but with educational purposes firmly in mind.

Since returning, David has successfully used a number of these techniques in drama classes for energizing students and for exploring text.

Middle and Upper School Librarian Nancy cottrill attended “Using iPads, Mobile Devices and Other Technology to Strengthen Learning” at the Bureau of Education and Research and “The Best New Young Adult Books” with TTL Seminars.

This past summer, Upper School teacher Sarah Young attended a week-long AP instructors'

summer workshop for first-time AP Statistics teachers at Taft Education Center in CT. This past July, Upper School teacher John Minahan attended an intensive week-long seminar at Fitchburg State University, sponsored by the College Board, on the teaching of Psychology, in preparation for Lincoln's inaugural course in Psychology this fall.

Finally, Dr. Elizabeth Englander came to Lincoln to help our faculty to understand what is, in fact, bullying and how schools can be proactive about preventing bullying by increasing their awareness of and responsiveness to the gateway behaviors that can lead to more serious situations in the future. All of these conversations were incredibly worthwhile and represent only a small percentage of the rich and ever so important professional growth opportunities that Lincoln teachers have experienced in the recent past.

Technology and web specialist Betsy Hunt and Middle School teacher Maggie friedfeld attended the EdTech Teacher iPad

Summit preconference at Harvard on November 6. Being surrounded by fellow teachers and presenters they were exposed to many ideas for iPad use in the classroom. Ben Scheiderman, author of “Leonardo's Laptop” has a useful framwork for using iPads in the classroom: Collect: gather and research information, Relate: make connections and collaborate to solve problem, Create: construct content and demonstrate understanding, Donate: contribute to the class or a broader community.

Middle and Upper School teacher Shannon Lambert went to NCTM in April 2012 and

attended a Singapore Math conference in CT.

Middle School Dean, Kelly DeBlois, Upper School Dean, Mara Lytle and Director of the Center for Peace, Equity, Justice through Service, Sterling clinton-Spellman attended a workshop called "Mean Girls": Dealing with Today's Girl Bullying and Relational Aggression.

The workshop addressed what bullying is and covered girls and relational aggression/bullying, the impact of social networking and technology on relational aggression, the implementation of school programs to stop girl bullying and strategies to give parents. As part of the workshop they also participated in some writing activities that they can use with their students.

Nurse Nancy Rockefeller attended a professional development seminar in November called, Managing Challenging Student Healthcare Needs as a School Nurse. It was sponsored by the Institute of Educational Development.

Campus News

On October 24, Grades 5-12 participated in several events to raise breast cancer awareness. Led by Grade 8 and Nicola Crocenzi '17 who organized a Think Pink Sale that raised $648 in 20 minutes! The proceeds went to the Women's Breast Health Center at Women & Infants Hospital to help women currently seeking treatment.

Kim Briggs Berry ’76, alumna, past parent of two Lincoln alumnae Cameron ’09 and Chelsea ’09, a current Trustee, and a breast cancer survivor, shared a few words before Grades 5-12, faculty and staff walked Blackstone Boulevard. Thanks to funds raised in honor of Karen Cartin, a breast cancer victim, former staff member, past parent and beloved friend, everyone received a pink bandana.

The Champlin Foundations has awarded Lincoln School a grant for $47,270 to fund the purchase of new classroom equipment to expand and enhance Lincoln’s robotics curriculum in the Upper School.

The Champlin grant will help ensure that Lincoln can continue to provide its students with a dynamic program in robotics and engineering, growing fields of employment in which women continue to be significantly underrepresented.

Chris spoke to the Upper School students.

Julie Anne Collier of Wingmasters— a licensed raptor rehabilitator based in Massachusetts—brought six raptors (birds of prey) with her to Lincoln. The students were entranced by the birds: a kestrel, a saw whet owl, an Eastern screech owl, a red-tailed hawk, a barn owl, and of course the golden eagle named Lakota. The presentation brought to life concepts such as territory, talons, predatory instincts, and wingspan.

Grades 2 and 5 visited the RI Air National Guard depot on the Quonset air base as guests of Col. Art Floru, father of Sasha ’20 and Anna ’23. The students met a female C130 pilot (who has flown missions in Afghanistan), sat in the cockpit of a huge plane and tried on some of the gear. They looked through night vision goggles and participated in demonstrations illustrating the principles of flight and Bernoulli's law.

On Halloween, Grade 5 made goodie bags for kids at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Lauren Moran ’13 signed a letter of commitment to attend the University of San Diego and will row with the Division I Women’s Rowing Team as part of the 2013-2014 freshman class.

Lilia Smyth ’16 was awarded the 2012 Global Citizen Scholarship from the National Spanish Examinations, which provided Lilia with the opportunity to spend two weeks at the Concordia Language Villages where she participated in Spanish language summer camp.

Elle Chrupcala ’13 was selected to the 2012 Harrow Sports / National Field Hockey Coaches Association High School All-Region Team. Elle is one out of 160 field hockey athletes chosen from the United States to receive this prestigious award.

Robin Boss ’83 and Margaret Field Kelly ’89 at the 16th Annual Alexis Allen Boss ’89 Memorial Tennis Open at Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, RI.

Quiet Home Paints visited Lower School on Tuesday, December 11 with their new line of chalkboard paints.

These organic, non-toxic paints were created by a mother-daughter team in Portsmouth, NH with the goal of creating a paint line for children's spaces that is not only beautiful and cohesive but safe for both earth and child.

In the Lower School, they painted a chalk paint mural in the hall outside Grade 4, four boards in the Library, and one big welcome board that you can't miss when you walk into Lower School. The girls have Winter 2013 4 already begun to personalize them with messages.

Kelsey Anderson ’13 What makes a great leader?

There is no formula for a perfect leader, but there are qualities that create an effective one. A great leader can lead through example, acknowledge and communicate a variety of perspectives, and create realistic plans to achieve goals. Most importantly, she is motivated to do what is best for her community.

“It has been such a privilege to get to work and know Kelsey these last few years. She is a hard worker, diligent student, critical thinker and most of all a great person. Not only does she challenge herself in all the aspects of her school life, she always brings out the best in those around her without it ever seeming competitive. She is what Lincoln is all about.”

What is your biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln?

As a Junior I became President of the Debate team and later that year won 1st Place Varsity Speaker at the Rhode Island State Championship. To achieve this success I had to leave my comfort zone and be at ease speaking publicly, thinking on the spot, and occasionally working with complete strangers. Taking a risk is scary, but the rewards are unparalleled.

What do you love most about Lincoln?

There is a profound sense of community visible throughout Lincoln: on teams, during performances, in Silent Meeting, and in simple daily encounters. The fact that we - Kara Gilligan, Kelsey’s Advisor, gather so often as an entire school – to appreciate fellow students, to listen to acPhysical Education Teacher complished speakers, or just to sit in silence or sing – is a unique high school experience Kelsey was accepted early decision to that makes me feel so much closer to my classmates. the PLME program (Program in Liberal

Olivia Williams ’14

What have you been challenged to do at Lincoln?

My Lincoln experience has taught me how to self-advocate. We know the coursework here is challenging and fast-paced, so communication between students and teachers is important. Although I was at first reluctant to speak up, I discovered that it is much more gratifying when you can solve your own problem.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud of the opportunities I have embraced throughout high school and the focus I’ve brought to my work in the classroom and in my activities. It has required a lot of balance, hard work, and prioritizing, but through this experience I was able to develop into the person I am today, with the position to make positive change in our community.

What are you most excited about this school year?

I can’t wait to participate in traditional senior activities such as Lumina, the Senior Service Project, and Step Singing. On the day-to-day, I look forward to being a role model and getting to know the underclassmen while I enjoy my last year on the soccer, debate, and crew teams. The Class of 2013 is an amazing class and I look forward to a great year together!

"Olivia is one of the most dedicated theater students here at Lincoln. She has an incredibly positive attitude and works hard to get things right. This is Olivia's third year with hand bells and she has taken to them really well. This year she is in the musical and is exploring what is it like to sing for the first time after being told for so long that she couldn't sing. Olivia dares to try new things and is fearless on stage."

I am most proud of overcoming the hard academic classes that I faced in the past, being able to be involved in all the activities as a deaf student and lastly I am proud for all of the teachers who were there to extend a helping hand to support me in everything!

What are you most excited about this school year?

I’m very excited to participate in my first winter musical that I had never done in all of the years that I have been at Lincoln and I’m also excited to start the college preparation process this year and of course enjoy junior year!

What have you been challenged to do at Lincoln?

I faced some challenges in some of the difficult subjects in my classes, participating in active sports while wearing cochlear implants and playing hand bells while having a hearing loss but it was successful in the end!

What do you love most about Lincoln?

I love the school spirit that we all share at Lincoln, the wonderful academic opportunities and the attitude in the community of acceptance.

What is your biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln?

My biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln was being one of the winners/awardees in Lincoln’s History Day competition in my sophomore year and it was such an honor because I worked so hard on this big project and it was definitely worth it in the end after two months of researching and putting together this awesome website I created! Hand bells was a big accomplishment for me at Lincoln and I just really enjoy playing in all of the concerts and especially Lumina!

Larson Bennett ’14

“Larson is a tremendous athlete. She has so much natural ability yet, is also one of the hardest working student-athletes on the field. Larson ends each game leaving everything she had on the field. She gives 100% at all times. She is a pleasure to coach. I have been coaching field hockey for 17 years and I can honestly say that Larson is one of best athletes I have coached and one of the most coachable athletes, always listening and wanting to get better. She is a great team player. When one of her teammates scores, Larson is usually the first to congratulate them. She is also very encouraging and spirited on and off the field.”

- Kim White, Varsity Field Hockey Coach What is the greatest lesson you have learned as a Lincoln athlete?

As a Lincoln athlete the greatest lesson I have learned thus far would be time management. Throughout middle school and high school, I became a much more fastidious and diligent student due to Lincoln's athletics. I found myself more focused in school, both in the classroom and during study hall.

What are you most excited about this school year?

I am so excited for the 2013 lacrosse season! Recently, Lincoln was admitted into Division II of the RI Interscholastic League, which means we'll be competing against some of the top notch schools in the state!

What are you most proud of?

As a Lincoln student and athlete I'm most proud of my capability to speak without fear of judgement. Everyone at Lincoln is extremely respectful of one another's opinions, which makes it easier to speak within the classroom.

What do you love most about Lincoln?

I love the fact that I can voice my opinions and ideas in the classroom without being belittled or criticized by my peers or teachers.

What have you been challenged to do at Lincoln?

Throughout my many years at Lincoln I have been challenged to take my ideas one step further, whether those ideas be inside the classroom or within the Lincoln community. This challenge has benefitted me outside of Lincoln as well.

What is your biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln?

My biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln would have to be successfully balancing both my academics and athletics during the fall and spring season.

Samantha Chu ’15

“Samantha is an outstanding student. She arrived at Lincoln School as a ninth grader already in possession of a strong work ethic. Samantha loves to be challenged academically; she wants to be pushed to the limits of her understanding. Samantha is aware of her intellectual gift, and I can see her searching for ways in which to use it in the real world. This might mean rallying Lincoln School to hold a blood drive, or it might mean helping another student with Latin. It is wonderful to see this kind of maturity and awareness of self in a young person.”

What motivated you to begin this service project?

My mother and grandmother are both avid blood donors, and they both were disappointed when they asked if Lincoln had a current blood drive and I answered no. My mother suggested I start one, so my advisor helped me contact the Rhode Island Blood Center.

What do you love the most about Lincoln?

I love the strong sense of community that surrounds Lincoln. There is such a warm atmosphere, and everyone is always friendly with everyone else.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the fact that the Lincoln community made such a

contribution during the two blood drives I have been a part of. I recently attended an event for the Blood Center, and everyone there was incredibly grateful for the accomplishments of the Lincoln blood drives. At the first blood drive, members of the community donated 25 units of blood, which helped up to 75 people.

What have you been challenged to do at Lincoln?

I have been challenged to improve my leadership skills. I am a member of the student council, and also organized the blood drives, and I am realizing how much effort and planning all events require.

What are you most excited about this school year?

Right now, I am most excited about Lumina. Last year was my first Lumina, and I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to it again.

What is your biggest accomplishment here at Lincoln?

My biggest accomplishment at Lincoln has been appreciating silent meeting. At first I struggled with the quiet of silent meeting, but now I enjoy having that time to reflect.

Celebrating Children’s Literature Rhode Island Festival of Children’s Books and Authors

incoln School hosted over 3,000 guests on Saturday, October 13, during the eighth Rhode Island Festival of Children’s Books and Authors. An amazing group of children’s authors and illustrators joined us: Tom Angleberger, Harry Bliss, Michael Buckley, Brian Floca, Mary-Louise Gay, Alan Katz, Lynn Munsinger, Scott Nash, Justin Roberts, Pam Munoz Ryan, Stephen Savage, Gary Schmidt, and Chris Van Allsburg.

On Friday during the school day, two authors did special presentations. Harry Bliss, author of Bailey and a New Yorker cartoonist did a presentation for Lower School students while Pam Munoz Ryan addressed Middle and Upper School students.

More than 200 members of the Lincoln community attended the kick-off dinner donated by the Guarino Family honoring Maurice Sendak.

After dinner the Music Center was rocking with a sing along as the whole audience sang the new lyrics to familiar songs from the books of author Alan Katz, who was delighted with the community renditions of his lyrics.

The musical evening concluded with a performance of Peter and the Wolf, conducted by John Eells leading the Rhode Island Philharmonic Community Orchestra and narrated by Charles Cofone.

Lincoln extends special thanks to the lead sponsor, BankRI, for underwriting outreach to area public schools and libraries. The Guarino Family donated the delicious dinner on Friday night for the Lincoln community. Other sponsors included the Women’s Leadership Council at the United Way, The Pawtucket Credit Union, Cox Communications, Books on the Square, Whole Foods, Eastside Market, Music for Children, and Bottles.

Strong showing by Lynx this Fall

We Are Family...

I’ve got all my sisters and me

incoln School’s Cross Country, Soccer and Field Hockey teams all advanced to post-season play after a successful regular season. Cross-country and soccer competed in the SENE Championships and our field hockey team qualified for the RIIL State Championship. This fall season, twenty of our Lincoln athletes were awarded all-division and all-academic awards. Additionally, we congratulate our tennis team for being awarded the RIIL – 2012-2013 Girls Tennis Division 1 Metropolitan B Sportsmanship award. Congratulations to all of our fall athletes on an outstanding fall season.

field Hockey – Closed out the fall season with an exciting 13-2-3 season. The team posted impressive regular season wins this season against Barrington, and East Greenwich High School. The team ended the season with a hard fought 0-2 loss RIIL State Semi-Final game against Barrington High under the lights at Cranston Stadium. The field hockey team benefited this season from the experienced play and leadership skills of the upper classmen and the speed and determination of the sophomore and freshman members of the squad.

ne December morning groups of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders were running across the lawn and roaming the hallways looking for the perfect location to shoot video clips on the middle school ipads. They were racing around, acting silly during one scene and very dramatic the next, attempting to complete the "Middle School Families 30-Minute Video Challenge." This is one example of community building activities in which middle school students take part through their families, small groups of students from grades 6, 7, and 8. The families come together for activities geared toward bonding, having fun, and reflecting on shared experiences. Two middle school teachers (Katy Wood and Maggie Friedfeld) brought the idea to Lincoln last year. Since then families have come together to share homemade cookies at the holidays, eat lunch as a group, discuss a TED talk, and kayak and explore the salt marsh as a group at the fall retreat. One of the favorite activities involved each family coming up with a theme (like Disney vacation, the 80's, or wedding) for a family photo. All the activities have provided the students with opportunities for fun and to get to know students they may not otherwise spend time with. This program also builds on the traditional big and little sister program in the middle school as those pairings are the basis for the family groups. The fun loving middle school students have made this new program a success and hopefully a tradition of its own.

The Power of One: Be the change you would like to see in the world Morgan Stone Day 2012 woman breaks through racial barriers and refuses to give up her seat on a bus. A survivor of genocide tells his story and empowers others to accept their neighbors. A child on a playground stands up to a bully. A student fights for diversity and inclusion of all students at her school; 12 years later, her school dedicates an entire day to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

The Power of One takes on many forms, coming to life as heroes throughout history and helping to shape our future.

Today, one voice has the ability to change the future, just as it has changed thousands of people's lives in the past.

This year, our celebration of multiculturalism and diversity centered on the theme, “The Power of One: Be the Change you want to see in the World.” 2B1members created an essential question to help frame the day's discussion: Take a moment to reflect on a time in which you took the opportunity to inspire others or a time in which you found yourself inspired by the actions or words of others. Then consider how the “power of one” can cause a chain reaction that will leave a mark on your community?

This year, Morgan Stone Day was filled with lots of exciting activities and workshops lead by 17 amazing people from all walks of life. We welcomed authors, performers, storytellers,

dancers, musicians, community leaders, alum, and Lincoln parents, who all exude the “Power of One” through actions in their everyday lives.

We were graced with great workshops such as, “Project Night Vision,” “ Leadership Through Service: Heart Work that Makes a Difference,” “The Role of the Warrior in Contemporary Culture and Society,” “Talking Across Differences: From Identification to Activism” and “Eliminating racism, Empowering women.” The girls were so inspired by Kobi Dennis, founder of Project Night Vision in Providence, that they are working on ways to further Lincoln's relationship with the organization.

They organized a fundraiser in support of Project Night Vision.

Many of our workshop leaders spoke of how their time with the girls was so incredibly inspiring that they pledge to find ways to strengthen their connection to the Lincoln community.

The feeling in the air was empowering. Lincoln students took in the knowledge, shared experiences, empathized with others, looked deep inside themselves and ended the day determined to find ways in their everyday lives to leave their own mark on this world.

Dear Lincoln Friends and Supporters,

Every day at Lincoln School, we ask our students to strive for their personal best in class, on the playing field, on stage, and in service to others. It is their pursuit of excellence and your support that inspire me every day. I thank you for your investment in this generation of Lincoln girls and our collective commitment to providing them with the best teachers, classmates, and facilities. As I shared in my letter to the community in October 2012, Lincoln has been fortunate to benefit from the leadership, talent, and commitment of Julia Russell Eells who has been Head of School for the past eight years.

Julia will be moving to San Francisco in July to become the new head of the University High School in San Francisco.

Under her guidance, we launched and completed the Our Best Selves Strategic Plan and secured more than $10 million to fund extensive campus improvements, faculty development, financial aid and program expansion. We have invested in our remarkable faculty. We have expanded our scholarship program to ensure that the best and brightest students can attend Lincoln. New technology has been integrated throughout our campus so that our facilities support the highest standards of teaching and learning. I am especially proud of the completion of the Murray Family Athletic Complex (see pages 33 and 34 for photos and story), giving our athletes the premiere athletic facilities for girls in our community. Lincoln has never been stronger and is poised to attract a dynamic new leader.

We look forward to sharing updates on this important search in the months ahead.

My daughter Maggie will graduate in June 2013. I know that I will miss seeing her classmates and hearing about their experiences at Lincoln. In 2011-12, one of my daughter’s classmates

Emily Fitts, was the student representative on the Board. She made it a priority to attend meetings regularly even if she was returning from a late practice or a game out at the Farm or had a pile of homework to do. She listened attentively and always had insightful observations to share. At our closing meeting in June, she left us breathless with her presentation listing student accomplishments and plans for the 2012-13 school year. Among the highlights: breaking down barriers between the grades and abolishing the “senior first rule”, pushing for more STEM courses, adding more fun activities to everyday life at school, encouraging more respect for the Lincoln uniform, strengthening peer mentoring programs, exploring new models of leadership, and encouraging all students to stand up for what want, and the list went on. This list is a great reminder of why we give and the tremendous impact our support has on Lincoln students today and their future.

I am deeply grateful to the Board of Trustees and our other volunteer leaders who are recognized in the year’s Report of Giving for dedicating their talent and time to the advancement of Lincoln School. I look forward to an exciting year ahead as we continue our work together.

These gifts of financial support are a testament to our community’s collective commitment to advancing Lincoln’s educational mission on behalf of this generation of Lincoln students. All donations are invested directly into our talented students, outstanding faculty, our diverse programs, and capital improvements on our Providence campus and the Murray Family Athletic Complex at Faxon Farm.

• The 2011-12 Annual Fund Campaign set a new record level of giving with nearly $640,000 in restricted and unrestricted operating gifts to support Lincoln students, faculty and programs during the 2010-11 school year.

Nearly 1,100 donors contributed to the Campaign and parents rallied at the end of the Campaign as part of the special lemonade challenge. The Class of 2024, the Kindergarten, won the challenge participation and served Dell’s lemonade to the Lincoln community at the Day of Service, All-School barbeque.

• Thanks to our generous donors, we added $527,267 to Lincoln’s endowment with new funds established to support our scholarship program including The Charlotte Lumb Swift ‘35 Scholarship.

• Donors came together to fund Phase III of the Faxon Farm renovation including a special challenge that will conclude in June 2013 to complete the fundraising for this transformative project. (See pages 33 & 34)

• The families of the Class of 2012 raised funds to support faculty development including the Innovation, Creation and Exploration (ICE) grants that were awarded for the first time in 2011-12. (See page 20)

• Lincoln received nearly $1,000,000 in bequests and planned gifts during the year and was notified of more than $500,000 in new bequest intentions from loyal friends. Lincoln extends special recognition to alumna, Eleanor Clayton ‘43 for her major bequest that supported the Faxon Farm renovation (page 33) and established the Elizabeth Giangreco Faculty Endowment Fund (See page 20)

Generous bequest establishes The Elizabeth Giangreco Faculty Fund in honor of Teaching Excellence leanor (Lee) Clayton ’43 was a devoted alumna and Lincoln supporter throughout her life. While she moved to San Francisco as a young professional in the early 1950s, she maintained her ties to Lincoln until her death in November 2011.

She provided generously for Lincoln by naming the school as the sole beneficiary of her IRA and a Life Insurance policy. In honor of her special connection with Lincoln faculty member, Elizabeth Giangreco, the Lincoln Board of Trustees designated a portion of her unrestricted bequest to establish a named endowment in Mrs. Giangreco’s name.

Mrs. Elizabeth Giangreco, known to her students and colleagues as Mrs. G., taught history at Lincoln School for 39 years from 1937 to 1976 and oversaw the growth of the history department as its chair. She served under the leadership of three different Heads of School – Frances Wheeler, Marion Shirley Cole, and Mary Louise Schaffner. During her nearly four decades of teaching and faculty leadership, she inspired hundreds of Lincoln students, guiding them through the study of Ancient History, Modern European History and American History. In their yearbook dedication to Mrs. G, the Class of 1956 shared:

“We fondly dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. G. in appreciation of her Charm: At all times Enthusiasm: For our plans Time: For each one of us Understanding: Our high and low points Guidance: Toward our goal”

Mrs. G., who celebrated her 98th birthday in May 2012 remembers “Lincoln as a wonderful place to teach because we had the freedom to try new things. The essence of Lincoln School has not changed. It remains committed to a respect for the individual, an interest in the intellectual development and freedom of girls and young women, and a focus on helping women succeed in life. I devoted my teaching career to Lincoln, and it always felt fresh and new. The girls made that possible. I am deeply honored and grateful to hear of Eleanor’s gift. She was a special student and stand out in so many ways.”

for the families of the class of 2012 making a gift in support of Lincoln faculty was an easy choice. Speaking on behalf of the 2012 Parent committee, class parent Toni Tinberg shared “one of the main reasons why we sent our daughters to Lincoln was its reputation for teaching excellence. Lincoln teachers bring their excitement to learn into their classrooms every day. our faculty Development fund will help fuel that love of life-long learning by supporting faculty to attend professional conferences, workshops and funding innovation grants to develop new courses and teaching tools.

The class of 2012 had a special connection to Lincoln’s center for Peace, Equity and Justice through Service which celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2011-12. Knowing that a new director, fellow alumna, Sterling clinton-Spellman ’02, would be arriving on campus in the fall 2012, the class designated its gift for the center, which organizes student-led events such as Morgan Stone ’00 Day, International Women’s Day, Senior Internships, and the All-School Day of Service. Sterling remarks, “What an amazing feeling to come back and know that the school has dedicated a center for great work. Most importantly the students feel so connected to this work that they designate a class gift to the center. I am looking forward to the center reflected throughout the school as a resource to educate our girls about social justice and equity that will transcend beyond Lincoln.”

We are deeply honored by the extraordinary generosity of the members of the Lincoln Foundation, an honorary group of individuals who have named Lincoln School in their wills or as a beneficiary of a planned gift. These gifts have an immeasurable impact on our School and its future (see page 70 for news of recent bequest). In May the AP Biology class visited the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass - one of the premier biological research institutes in the country. They visited the Marine Resource Center to see a variety of organisms used in biomedical research, the Rare Books Room of the library, where they held a signed first edition Origin of the Species, and spoke with graduate students researching the biology of deep sea hydrothermal vents.

Lincoln celebrates The Murray Family Athletic Complex at Faxon Farm

n a September 24th 2012, a glorious New England fall afternoon more than 300 members of the Lincoln community gathered at the Murray Family Athletic Complex at Faxon Farm to cut the ribbon on the completion of this transformative renovation of Lincoln’s home to its interscholastic programs in soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and tennis.

In 2008, the Board of Trustees approved an ambitious plan for Faxon Farm to create premier athletic facilities commensurate with our athletes’ and coaches’ talents and dedication to excellence. The collective investment in this project reflects Lincoln’s commitment to athletics and its critical role in nurturing the whole girl – body, mind and spirit.

Thanks to a generous lead gift of $1.0 million dollars from Terry and Suzanne Young Murray ’58 and the Murray family, Lincoln was able to launch an ambitious fundraising campaign to make this plan a reality. Phase I was completed in September 2008, creating the first synthetic turf field in Southeastern, MA and Rhode Island devoted and lined exclusively to all-girls field hockey, soccer and lacrosse. The field has been named in honor of the Perlman Family in recognition for their leadership support of the project.

Phase II was finished in September 2010 with the creation of The Boss Family Tennis Center featuring six all-weather tennis courts and new natural turf championship-sized field.

Phase III has focused on an extensive renovation of Faxon Farm’s

historic Carriage House to provide new restrooms, a beautiful outdoor terrace and fireplace for community gatherings.

“Lincoln School has been a part of our family for three generations. It has been so exciting to see this first-class athletic facility take shape from its earliest stages to today's ribbon-cutting. We have created THE premier athletic complex for girls’ soccer, field hockey, lacrosse and tennis in Southern New England. Our girls deserve this benefit. We are thrilled that they can enjoy an athletic facility that allows them to reach their goals, just as they do every day in our classrooms. My parents and the rest of our family are proud to have been able to lead this effort, to help inspire others to support Lincoln and to be part of a legacy of athletics at our school for this and future generations of Lincoln girls.”

Thanks to the generosity of Lincoln alumnae, parents and friends, more than $2.3 million has been raised to date. Lincoln is seeking an additional $75,000 to complete a special challenge to complete the final stage of the Faxon Farm Campaign. New Enrichment Fund allows Lincoln Scholars to expand their studies and voices beyond Lincoln building an underwater “robot” as a major challenge, as well as building a wind turbine, a device that effectively filtered water, airplanes with accompanying launches and finally, many towers. She visited facilities including NASA Ames Research Center, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Intel.

She shared the following about her experience. “In one of the enriching leadership seminars, my peers and I were discussing a topic as an entire group. I recall having an urgency to say something, something I thought would positively add to the discussion and without hesitation I raised my hand. As soon as I began to speak, there was shuffling in the room. I could sense the overall surprise that a female was bold enough to speak. Being a Lincoln girl, I had not noticed it much at first, but within moments it had come to my realization that what Lincoln School is preparing me for is indeed real.”

This Fund gives each Lincoln Scholar the chance to participate in educational offerings outside of school that allow them to develop particular talents and skills, engage in cultural exchanges, explore new fields of study, and connect with a broader community of students and faculty outside Lincoln.

“Unfortunately, we live in a world that still does not display gender equality all around. It then becomes the work of us girls, us women, to change that by finding our voices and utilizing them in the best way possible. That is what Lincoln has taught me, and to be completely honest, that idea had not been solidified until that point. My epiphany made me appreciate my school in a way I had never done before. This enrichment program really instilled in me a burning desire to go out, as a strong female, and change the world the best way I know how.”

In its first year, Kayla Gillespie ’12 attended the Concordia Language School to further her study of Japanese. Kayla had never flown before or traveled by herself. She shared that the life lessons she learned on her trip will stay with her forever. Kayla is now a freshman at Boston University.

During the summer of 2012, Leticia Lopes ’13 attended the National Student Leadership Conference (NSCL) at the University of California, Berkeley thanks to this Fund. This leadership program allows students from across the United States and more than 45 different countries to explore the academic and career interests of their choice. She participated in multiple hands-on engineering simulations including

Treasurer and Chairman, Finance Committee The Finance Committee is pleased with all we were able to accomplish for the 2011-2012 year from both an operating and strategic perspective. Lincoln continues to operate from a position of strength thanks to careful management of the School’s annual operating budget, thoughtful planning for Lincoln’s future, and generous support from our community.

Lincoln finished the 2011-2012 school year with a small operating surplus which was made possible through conservative and realistic budget planning. We closed our fiscal year with a glowing report from our independent auditors Batchelor, Frechette, McCrory, Michael & Co. On a comprehensive, consolidated basis, Lincoln ended the year with a $560,000 positive change in net assets. This was primarily due to increased donor support of nearly $620,000 compared to the prior year thanks to two generous bequests from two alumnae, Eleanor Clayton ‘43 and Charlotte Lumb Swift ’35.

Thanks to generous donor support of a $2.3 million dollar fundraising campaign, Lincoln completed the final phase of Murray Family Athletic Complex at Faxon Farm renovating the historic Carriage House into much needed restrooms. The Lincoln community celebrated the completion of this project in September 2012.

I want to thank the members of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees for their dedication during the past year. Their commitment and leadership has helped Lincoln achieve a solid operating profile, make critical investments in our campuses and continue to enhance Lincoln’s long-term financial profile.

In June 2011, Lincoln transferred its endowment of $7,000,000 to the Rhode Island Foundation. The Rhode Island Foundation is one of the nation’s oldest community foundations with total assets approaching $600 million. Lincoln’s endowment portfolio benefits from the Foundation’s prudent oversight and stewardship of funds combined with investment strategies dedicated to ensuring continuity of Lincoln School’s mission. As of June 30, 2012, the value of Lincoln’s endowment was $7,838,914.

In 2010, the Finance Committee adopted a policy stipulating that a portion of all unrestricted bequests be set aside to help pay down the School’s debt. As a result of this policy, this year we paid down an additional $224,000 of principal on long-term debt.

In April, Lincoln was the first independent school in Rhode Island to implement a new and significantly enhanced TIAA-CREF retirement plan offering employees broader investment options. We are pleased to be able to enhance this important benefit for our dedicated teachers and staff.

The Finance Committee approved the largest capital investment in technology in the School’s history to support our iPad pilot program in the Middle School with additional tablets, new smart technology for classrooms, wireless connectivity for the Middle and Upper School, and computer upgrades throughout the campus. Lincoln invested in a new heating system for the Middle and Upper School that is much more energy efficient, with better climate controlled classrooms and significantly reduced energy costs. This system will enable Lincoln to reduce its carbon footprint and it is projected that the new system will reduce the School’s heating cost by 30% a year.

Members of the Class of 2013 had the opportunity to participate in a leadership program the 2011-2012 academic year.

In June, these students attended an end of the year retreat at Dwight House. There they planned for senior year through discussion and reflection, but also spent time baking various breads to donate to the Sunrise House in Providence. incoln School Annual fund: More than 50 years ago, a group of dedicated parents, alumnae, and friends launched the first Annual Fund Drive. Endowment Gifts: Gifts to the Lincoln School Endowment help ensure our long-term financial health by providing a permanent fund that is invested to provide an income stream that supports the specific program for which it is given. A portion of our endowed funds are reinvested to ensure that the purchasing power of our endowment keeps up with the rate of inflation and, whenever possible, provides for appreciated growth of the fund. To establish a new fund, a minimum

donation of $25,000 is required. Gifts of any size may be added to existing endowed funds. (See page 36 for a list of current endowment funds). The endowment is managed by The RI Foundation.
