Scott hosts 25th annual MLK Celebration Scott Middle School held its 25th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Friday, Jan. 14.

The program featured readings and music by students, as well as remarks by this year’s honoree, Roland Temme, who always emphasized diversity in hiring employees for his business, TMCO. His photo will now be hung on the Wall of Honor at Scott, joining former honorees.

SAVE THE DATE: AFRICAN AMERICAN READ IN 2022 On Wednesday, Feb. 9, Lincoln Public Schools will host the annual African American Read In event, featuring LPS staff, students and community members reading and performing excerpts from African-American literature and sharing stories about the authors and their work.

The hour-long event, held in conjunction with Lincoln City Libraries, explores African American history and the contributions of African Americans in the world of literature and the arts. It’s part of a nationwide literacy initiative during Black History Month, with similar events occurring across the country.

This year’s event will be noon-1 p.m. and will be held virtual-only. It can be accessed the day of the event on the front page of LPS.org and the LPS Facebook page.

Plan for Use of ESSER III Funds​ Lincoln Public Schools has the opportunity to make an application to the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) for funding through the American Rescue Plan’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund, passed by Congress in March 2021. More commonly known as ESSER III, this funding is provided to State educational agencies and school districts to help safely reopen and sustain the safe operation of schools and address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Nation’s students. LPS has engaged groups and individuals representing multiple stakeholders in the development of this plan.

LPS has been allocated $61.5 million to support its efforts to safely maintain the operation of school and address the learning needs of students through September 30, 2024.

•

LPS proposes to invest funding in strategies that will provide learning acceleration to all students at all levels. Specialized strategies will also be implemented that are targeted to key subgroups of students, including low-income children, children with disabilities, English learners, and racial and ethnic minorities. Data on student achievement from the past two school years has been collected and used to determine priorities.

Broad Strategies • Implementation of reading, math and science curricula that will best respond to student need for learning acceleration including related teacher training, • Reading and math intervention programs, • Extended day academic support at all schools during the school year, to offer before and/or after school tutoring services with teachers in the building, • Summer school offered at all elementary and middle schools for students who could most benefit, including transportation, summer library programs and support for Community Learning Centers to provide complementary full-day programming, • Jump Start programming for students in kindergarten and first grade at all schools, • An expansion of high school summer school, • Additional professional development and planning time during summer and school year for teachers at all levels on best practices in learning acceleration, • Support for Professional Learning Communities to inform instructional practices at all schools, and • Revitalization of school library print and electronic resources.

Specialized Strategies • Utilization of interventionists at all schools to provide academic support for struggling students, as well as intervention classes in middle schools and academic support for students in rigorous high school courses,

Expanded support for specialized programs including Family Literacy, Graduation Pathways, and Pathfinder Education Program, as well as planning for a career coaching program for low-income high school students, Implementation of AVID, (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program designed to help students in middle and high school with high academic potential prepare for college, Additional support for English learners and American Indian students through the work of teacher leaders, bilingual liaisons and student advocates, and Support for student leadership development through equity focused scholar engagement and collaboration with community cultural non-profit organizations.

Mental Health Services and Supports • Partnerships with community behavioral health organizations to provide additional school-based therapy services for all students in need, including specific support for immigrant and refugee students, • Additional time for school counselors and social/ emotional support liaisons, • Training on trauma-informed care for teachers and administrators, • Additional in-person and telehealth support services through the Employee Assistance Program provider.

Other School Supports • Indoor air quality improvements • Personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies • Substitute teachers assigned to be available every school day • Attendance support • Technology including Human Resources Claims tracking for COVID and other leave ESSER I and II Over the past year, LPS received three authorizations under Federal Relief Funding and planned use for the funding was detailed in the February 23, 2021 Board meeting. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER I) provided aid to reopen and operate school during the pandemic, including remote learning for the 2020-21 school year.

ESSER II provided aid to focus on learning acceleration through the summer, while also providing interventions and supports.

January TeamMates of the Month

Ty and Bradly : Music and Marvel Bradly was looking to become more involved in the community when he learned about TeamMates Mentoring through his then-employer, Nelnet. “What better way than to be someone who I wish I had for myself when I was growing up?”

He hadn’t worked with youth before, and as many new volunteers recall, he felt a little nervous before meeting his mentee. Ty, now an eighth-grader at Park, also remembers the exciting uncertainty of being matched back in fifth grade at Saratoga. “It was a little nerve-wracking cause it’s like, ‘Who am I going to get? Is he going to understand what I like?’”

After breaking the ice through building a Lego set and asking some get-to-know-you questions, Ty was eager to talk about his favorite topic, Marvel Comics.

“I’ve been into Marvel since I was little,” said Ty. He enjoys the characters and their stories, and finds he can relate to some, “Especially Spiderman, cause he’s a kid with superpowers, and he’s different from everybody.”

Bradly has enjoyed Ty teaching him “practically everything” about Marvel. “I have learned about so many different characters, story lines, and their backstories,” said Bradly. He has even started following Marvel films and series per Ty’s recommendations. “I started watching the movies, and I was like, ‘I don’t know why I haven’t watched these before, it’s great.’”

The pair also bond over their shared love of music, singing, and video games. “We’re pretty much the same people except he’s taller,” joked Ty. “I wanted a TeamMate so I could have someone I can talk to and someone who understands me a little better,” said Ty. He feels he has found that support, “Bradly is more understanding, I get along with him a little better than I do with others. I have known him for so long, I know I can trust him because of how kind he is. I’ve learned from Bradly that even though you’re having a bad day, you can still be kind.”

“Every single time after we get done meeting I’m so filled with happiness because meeting with Ty is the best,” said Bradly. “I never thought I could care for someone so much that I see an hour a week.”

“It’s an hour? It feels like a minute,” said Ty. Although the time flies, the pair both treasure their meetings and feel appreciative to have seen each other. “I always look forward to Thursdays,” said Ty. The best part is “everything!” he says. “Except the part where we’re leaving.”

“I wanted a TeamMate so I could have someone I can talk to and someone who understands me a little better... I’ve learned from Bradly that even though you’re having a bad day, you can still be kind.”

Northeast students immersed in hands-on math, science through new program with UNL Over the course of a few days in November, roughly 700 Lincoln Northeast High School students visited the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s East Campus, where their math and science classes took a hands-on turn. The students peered at insects crawling in flour, crafted their own irrigation systems and assembled DIY hydroponic kits, among other activities.

The Northeast ninth- and 10th-graders who visited East Campus are among the first students to take part in the LPS-CASNR (College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Sciences) Early College and Career STEM Program. The program, which launched this year, is an innovative partnership between Lincoln Public Schools and the university’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Through the program, ninth- and 10th-grade Northeast students learn concepts in the areas of food, energy, water and societal systems - collectively known as FEWS2 - through the school’s existing curriculums in all subject areas. Students in 11th and 12th grades will have the opportunity to explore pathways — including early college credit — that will help them pursue careers or higher education in FEWS2 fields. This is important in a state such as Nebraska, where one in four jobs is related to agriculture and natural resources.

“The vision is just to build a better future generation for Nebraska to take care of our state,” said Bailey Feit, CASNR/LPS focus program coordinator and a former LPS teacher. “The mission is a little more specific to the students, and it’s very much about their career opportunities and getting them to have ways to connect what they’re learning in the classroom into the outside world.”

The immersion event on East Campus aimed to further introduce students to FEWS2 concepts, as well as acquaint them with the students, where students who wish to pursue early college credit or a certificate have the opportunity to take classes and participate in other immersive activities as they move through the program.

During the November events, students practiced addressing challenges related to FEWS2. Each day was divided into four sessions involving irrigation, entomology, water dams and levees, hydroponic lunchboxes, and animals and food.

For some students, including Northeast 10th-grader Levi Eppens, the activities and discussion underscored how central agriculture is to Nebraska’s economy.

“I’ve learned that it’s pretty much the premise of Nebraska’s wealth and pretty much how we survive,” he said. “A lot of Nebraskans farm, and I know it’s super important to them to have so many innovations.”

Northeast teachers also attended the event and were able to see students connect the concepts they learned in the classroom and how they’re applied.

“It gets the students out into the real world, and they see hands-on activities that are engaging, real-life applications,” said Brett Shaw, a Northeast math teacher. “They’re able to actively do things that they can’t do in the classroom.”

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Celebrating Energy Star Certifications at Belmont and Irving Congratulations to Irving Middle School and Belmont Elementary School for receiving their Energy Star Certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

For more than 20 years, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program has identified the most energy-efficient products and buildings. This program looks at a building’s usage, utilities, occupancy, energy performance and more to generate an energy efficiency score - a number between 1 and 100 (100 being the highest). The score is calculated based on the efficiency of the building compared to similar buildings across the nation.

Buildings with a score of 75 or higher are considered energy efficient and eligible to earn Energy Star certification.

Both Irving and Belmont received indoor air quality (IAQ) projects from the 2014 bond issue, which included updating the HVAC system to ground source heat pumps, converting to LED lighting, and making improvements to building envelopes such as roofing and windows. All of these improvements moved their building performance above and beyond the eligible range for Energy Star Certification. Belmont earned an efficiency score of 95 and Irving earned an efficiency score of 98, which means they are more efficient than 95% and 98% of all other similar buildings across the nation. Both schools have celebrated their achievements with students and staff and a 2021 Energy Star Certified Building decal will be placed at each school to signify this accomplishment.

Currently, there are 50 LPS buildings with an Energy Star score of 75 or above and we hope to have more of these facilities certified in 2022. LPS strives to operate efficient, sustainable, and healthy buildings and this Energy Star Certification is an exciting way to be nationally recognized and celebrate with our schools. Thank you to all of our students and staff who support efforts to save energy and help Belmont and Irving be leaders in sustainability!

North Star senior chosen for Senate Youth Program Zein Saleh, a senior at Lincoln North Star High School, has been named one of two students from Nebraska as a delegate to the 60th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) held virtually from Washington, D.C., March 5-10. Saleh is one of only 104 students from across the country to be chosen.

Saleh is no stranger to leadership. He currently is the president of three school organizations: Key Club, Student Council and National Honor Society. He also was appointed as a member of the Lincoln Public Schools Scholarly Multicultural Equity Cadre, as well as the Diversity in LPS Advanced Course Enrollment Committee. He has been a Lincoln-Douglas debater since his freshman year, becoming team captain his junior year. He also has been the Equity in Afterschool Settings Curriculum intern for the Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

The USSYP was created by Senate Resolution 324 in 1962 and has been sponsored by the U.S. Senate and fully funded by The Hearst Foundations. The program is designed to increase young Americans’ understanding of the interrelationships of the three branches of government, learn the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and emphasize the vital importance of democratic decision-making not only for America but for people around the world.

The overall mission of the program is to help grow knowledge of the American political process and a lifelong commitment to public service. In addition to the program week, The Hearst Foundations provide each student with a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship.

During Washington Week, the student delegates virtually attend meetings and briefings with senators, members of the House of Representatives, Congressional staff, the president, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, an ambassador to the United States and senior members of the national media.

More than 80 8th-graders from across Lincoln Public Schools performed in the annual All City Band and Orchestra Concert on Jan. 6. The performance, and preceding practice, were held at Kimball Recital Hall on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus.

Youth rally honors legacy

The 27th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Rally and March was held virtually this year on Monday, Jan. 17, with the pre-rally program at 9:30 a.m., followed by the “Call to Action Program.” The event was held at the student union at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The event featured numerous LPS students, as well as community leaders.

“Our theme stressed the importance of unity and valuing collaboration, uplifting each other and advocating for those around you,” said planning committee member and Lincoln North Star High School student Reem Ahmed.

In October 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children’s Hospital Association declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health, citing the serious toll of the COVID-19 pandemic on top of existing challenges. Our community’s youth have been impacted, as we see an increase in the number of young people who are facing mental health challenges, including higher levels of anxiety and stress. Northeast’s Peaslee honored as counselor of the year As a student leaves counselor Marilynn Peaslee’s office at Lincoln Northeast High School, you can hear him saying to her, “I’m just so nervous because it’s my senior year.” Peaslee calmly responds, “You’ll be okay, we’ve got your back.”

“Congratulations not just to you but to your team at Northeast,” Danek said. “You don’t just engage the top students but you engage every student and make sure they’re on track to graduate and find a future.”

Her response says a lot about her as a counselor. Peaslee is caring and encouraging. She also knows it takes a team of counselors - the “we” - to work with students and help them succeed.

Her colleague Malinda Jean Baptiste called Peaslee “the embodiment” of a school counselor, always willing to set aside her task at hand to work with a student - “always putting people before paper.”

The Nebraska School Counselor Association recently named Peaslee the 2021 Nebraska High School Counselor of the Year.

Because of that, she also was recognized at the Jan. 11 Lincoln Board of Education meeting with a formal resolution.

When addressing the board, she once again stressed the “we” in her work.

“I wish all my colleagues district wide could receive this recognition and especially my team at Northeast,” said Peaslee, who has been at the school for 22 years.

“It’s not just one person, we work together as a team. It takes all of us to do the work.”

Board member Kathy Danek - a Northeast graduate who now represents that area of the city - presented Peaslee with the resolution.

“I also appreciate how she encourages the members of her team,” she said. “She is the encouraging word on a hard day, an engaged listener as you process a situation, a knowledgeable resource on ideas of things to try with a student, and a huge advocate of the role of school counselor as both a proactive educator and a reactive support for students.”

Lincoln Public Schools Supervisor of Counseling and School Social Work Brenda Leggiadro can rattle off many attributes that make Peaslee an outstanding school counselor.

“But the one that stands out,” she said, “is her heart for students.”

Before you hit ‘complete order’ on phones or gaming devices

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Calling all parents with your fingers hovering over the purchase button for gaming tech or smart phones. There is no stronger full-court press for parents than kids wanting access to tech and devices - but buyer beware. Please read this first and answer these questions for yourself.

Am I ready to take on the extra work it will require to try and keep my child safe?

• Managing tech safety for our kids is the most exhausting chore of a teen/tween parent in 2022, because the challenges and threats are constantly changing.

• If you are serious about letting this resource into your child’s hands, it comes with great responsibility.

• There will be a need for constant communication with your kids, which will no doubt be met with new levels of eye rolling. As you know, all kids are invincible.

Is my child mentally and emotionally ready to experience serious adult content?

• Both violent images and highly graphic sexual content. You might be thinking, aww, not my little angel, they want to play Roblox or Minecraft with their friends. Well, ready or not, adult content will find them and every kid is curious by nature.

• Sadly, even Roblox, Minecraft and other games aimed at younger players have some bizarrely graphic sexual content being made, posing as “how to” videos on YouTube they can’t un-see. Ugh. • Many parents do not realize that all gaming systems of 2022 are gateways to the internet for kids. If you let them use devices in rooms or private areas, it is basically letting the entire world of bad actors have access to your kids, anytime day or night.

• You likely have apps that are very wholesome for you that can be gateways to explicit content. One great example is Pinterest, which can turn dark with certain search words and lead to sexual content and links.

Does my child have smart, tech savvy friends? Yes, they all do. Between them they act as a help desk on hyper-drive, finding work arounds for parent safeguards. It would be impressive if it wasn’t so darned scary. Even well-meaning kids will have friends teach them the ways of the dark side.

Is there a reason tech company folks don’t let their kids have access to devices? You bet your sweet bippy. They know what is going on behind the walls and how situations can put kids at risk for personal safety as well as increased anxiety and depression and are opting their kids out of it. Hmmm…

What would a friend with older kids tell you?

• Be a hold-out for as long as humanly possible. Endure the begging, bugging and jeering from your kids. Remember you are the parent and in charge of protecting them. The costs of having access to smart phones and gaming systems too early are far above what they cost your pocketbook.

• There are versions of phones you can get (for

example Pinwheel) that can act as a basic phone and safety device if your child needs that since many homes do not have a landline and these devices still have some tracking mechanisms if that is your goal. They aren’t heavily advertised because they are less profitable for phone companies.

All kids with a tablet, phone or gaming device access - girls and guys - are subject to potential significant bullying, bonus friend drama, sex trafficking lures from creeps posing as kids, not to mention serious adult content.

If your child is wearing headphones, they may be secretly exposed to heavy foul language and unbelievable sexual discussions between players. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t have kids experience it. Gamer discussions on Discord and Twitch are anything goes.

I would tell you countless friends with boys all want to throw gaming systems out the window. Once it is in the house it becomes the center of most battles. The makers have made them irresistible to kids, but especially guys. Motivation to do anything else is out the window for many of them.

Well dang. We already have these devices.

Now what? If they are new, set very specific rules around their use and be consistent. Ensure that you have full access to their devices and any passwords. Set up parent controls with passwords they don’t have. You are the parent, so you can also do a family reset and put fences in place if you haven’t yet.

For phones, laptops and tablets: • Devices should sleep/recharge in adult bedroom spaces to avoid sneaky use at night, leading to loss of sleep and safety. Utilize programs such as Smart Family that can’t be turned off by kids or set a rule that if protections are turned off, the device goes away.

This is also a safer way to check on your child instead of calling and distracting them if they are driving.

• Filter/block any social media sites you do not feel your child is ready to handle. Have them “friend” you and be sure you are on any app they are using so that you can learn what capabilities it has. If your child has a “spam”

secret account, discuss it openly and though you will likely not be invited in, be sure you know the name of it for safety reasons. Keep chatting with other parents to find out what apps/games/issues they are finding their kids using.

Gather phone numbers of your child’s friends and/or parents. If there is a serious concern, this gives you a way to communicate with the parents and, in extreme situations such as a mental health crisis, to get them to help. Use these resources responsibly as a parent and kids will feel protected.

Other parents will appreciate your thinking of it.

Set a “hand it over now” rule, which allows you to look in their device at any time without question or giving them time to delete anything. Blocking in-app purchasing can also protect you from surprises on your bank statement. (Remind them often that devices are not a right, only a privilege.)

For gaming systems: • Set time limits (60-90 minutes per day, weekends only), types of games you allow, ensuring they are only used in family living spaces, headphones off, turn off chats with other players when possible, explore settings within the device for safeguards and use them, do not let kids “friend” strangers, keep play to offline as much as possible.

• Even if you don’t love it, watch and/or play with your kids on any game you allow them to play to get a sense of the game. Some games have a “creative play or practice” mode which is usually a safer option.

• Since you won’t want to move the gaming system, having the power cords or gaming controllers sleep in the parents’ room help avoid secret middle of the night gaming.

Tech can be positive and a connecting tool when well managed. I love tech as do my college-aged sons, though it’s been a challenging journey getting to this point. In addition, I often see the fall-out in schools for kids where it may have been handed off without thought to the responsibility of that access. LPS Wellness will continue to share awareness items to help partner with parents and help navigate the tricky waters of growing great kids. Stay tuned!

Valentine’s Day: Out with the romance, in with the kindness and support for kids

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness The holiday of hearts has always been one of slight awkwardness for kids, as it tries to blend the concept of romance with an opportunity to sell some candy.

For several years now, food allergies have shifted the focus away from candy just to notes within schools or just a simple school celebration. Others have taken part in heart-healthy physical activity events. Hopefully any notes exchanged ring of kindness and friendship, not of kindergarten romance.

Especially in tension-filled times, our students need to feel safe, secure and supported. The focus on social-emotional wellness during this time of year is one of kindness, gratitude, self-acceptance and self-care.

Some students feel especially anxious during testing, which begins for some students in February. Encouraging fun brain breaks, positive notes, moments of silliness and how to center and focus oneself are all tools used in classrooms to create a network of loving support around students.

Even though we as adults may think of February more from the angle of romance, help your students reframe what love means for them at this time in their lives. Talk with them about how critical it is to love and accept themselves.

Teaching our kids what friendship looks like is a serious life skill. If your student is feeling extra stress at this time, talk with your school counselor, social worker or administrator to start seeking the resources they need.

Good Health is a Family Affair

Especially as kids reach older grades, they may join many adults in having feelings of being left out or disappointed on Valentine’s Day. Though we as adults know those experiencing the “perfect” Valentine’s Day are few and far between, social media can have them believing the opposite. Recognizing the challenges of growing up with a false comparison at their fingertips is something we need to continually discuss with them to keep perspective.

We hope that you find this month of hearts helps you and your student think about your efforts for self-care, health and creates great discussion in support of social-emotional health, both at school and at home. Together we can build a loving and kind future for our community.

LPS Wellness has gone to the dogs (and cats)

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Our final wellness focus for students this school year is social-emotional wellness. LPS staff was invited to share pictures of pets, particularly since many a pet has been added to households these past two years.

Pictures of staff pets and some of our great LPS service dogs will be featured in scavenger hunts, on bingo cards and on posters around the district, along with strategies to boost kindness and decrease stress. Last year, we did a smaller version of this and the students loved it, so this year we are taking it to the next level.

Ideas for coping strategies were shared by school counselors to help shape our collaborative efforts to help students. If you hear your student coming home, excitedly talking about all of the teacher’s pets, know that this is on purpose. It’s all of the cuteness and fun of having pets to bring smiles to our student and staff faces during this final season.

We know that each LPS household is unique and while for some of your pets are the center of your household, for others pet ownership just is not a reality in your situation. This fun is a great way to let students all enjoy the warm, fuzzy feeling of having pets surrounding them, without any of the complications they may present.

Our hope is that for kids who love to see smiling pets, that this project can bring brightness to their days and help encourage them to engage in fun ways to boost both kindness and coping strategies. We hope you see the impact of this fun opportunity to support your student's personal growth and resilience. Thanks for all you do to partner with us in expanding those life skills.

2021-22 LPS Learning Lunch Series: Wednesday, Feb. 16 “LPS Focus Programs” LPS Director of Strategic Initiatives and Focus Programs James Blake, along with representatives from partnering community organizations, will offer an overview of the school district’s current focus programs, as well as those that are being added in the future. LPS currently offers the Science Focus Program and the Arts & Humanities Program, the International Baccalaureate Program at Lincoln High School, the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Lincoln Northeast High School and The Career Academy.

The programs that will launch in 2022-23 are the Early College and Career STEM Program at Northeast, Bryan College of Health and Sciences at the new Lincoln Northwest High School, and the Bay Focus Program.

Wednesday, March 23 “Sustainability at LPS: Connecting Facilities, Students, and Community Through Climate Action” Learn about the LPS Sustainability Programs that are supporting green school initiatives in the areas of waste, energy, water, transportation and air quality.

LPS Sustainability Coordinator Brittney Albin will show how there are plenty of ways to get involved at our schools, just in time for Earth Day in April.

Wednesday, April 20 “How Does Science Really Work? Dogs and Turnips.”

In the wake of the pandemic, science has certainly been put under the microscope. Engage in an activity with LPS Science Curriculum Specialist Betsy Barent that will deepen your understanding about what science is and what it isn't - and you’ll have some fun, too!

Tuesday, May 17 “Lincoln Youth Symphony, 65 Years of Musical Excellence” As is tradition, the final Learning Lunch of the school year will feature student music. This year it will be the Lincoln Youth Symphony as it celebrates its 65th anniversary. LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen and the symphony’s director, Clark Potter, will provide the rich history of the symphony and the program will feature a live student performance.

Pathfinder program another example of LPS dedication to serve all students Step into the center area of the Lancaster County Youth Services Center and you might forget you’re in a facility that houses detained youth ages 14-18 who have committed crimes.

The area in the middle of the building illustrates the core mission of the Lincoln Public Schools Pathfinder Education Program, which is housed at the youth services center: instilling the value of education in these youth so they can move past the experiences and actions that led them to this place in their lives. LPS worked in conjunction with Lancaster County to design the facility 20 years ago.

“The best compliment we got from people who visited the facility before the pandemic was, ‘Wow, this looks just like a real school,’” said Pathfinder Director Randy Farmer, who has been part of the program for 20 years and director for the past 16. He spoke about this groundbreaking and under-the-radar program at the LPS Learning Lunch in December.

It’s typical at any given time for roughly 20 teenagers to be in the program, for anywhere between a couple weeks to multiple months. They rotate from class to class, taught by LPS teachers, and mainly focus on courses they need to earn credits toward graduation - math, science, language arts.

Farmer said it’s important to remember that all of these students have experienced some kind of trauma that led them to this point - and it’s not always the stereotypical student that people might envision. More and more, he said, they’re working with students with high grade point averages who are close to graduation.

“These are smart kids. These are curious kids. These are clever kids. These are really enjoyable young people to work with when they can let go of everything else that has happened.”

The turnover among staff is very low, especially considering the challenges they may face on a given day.

“We laugh, we cry,” Farmer said, “and we come back the next day.”

Growing up in Papillion, Farmer never planned on going into education - or even going to college - until he realized how much he loved learning and eventually discovered what turned out to be his life’s passion: working with youth in the criminal justice system. He’s now a national expert on the topic, serving on national boards and speaking at conferences.

The Pathfinder program, funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, is designed to rehabilitate, not punish. Farmer said research shows that education is one of the most effective ways to reduce recidivism among youth offenders. He also said this LPS program is considered a model for the rest of the country.

“Our mantra is, ‘Be a participant. Be academic. Be thoughtful. Be honest.’”
